Review: Marty Stuart has certainly earned his stripes as a certified Country Music Hall of Fame, five-time Grammy winner and AMA Lifetime Achievement honouree. Now he's back with his first album in five years, backed up by his band of the past 20 years, The Fabulous Superlatives and he's sounding as vital as ever. Altitude is a widescreen expanse of an album full of the breezy, rolling Americana Stuart has forged his career on since starting out with Johnny Cash et al, but it's not a simple case of repeating the same tricks. There's a genuine hunger for new avenues of expression in these songs, and a sincerity in his voice as much now as when he first went solo back in the 70s.

Review: Loudest rock band in the world? Possibly. At one point? Definitely. Feel Good Now certainly proves the theory, with the second live album from Swans, recorded during their 1987 Children of God tour, capturing some of the zeitgeist of seeing them in the flesh. The fact all this was captured using a Sony Professional Walkman only emphasises just how much zeitgeist there was to capture. Remastered for this edition, fans of the grit and heaving atmosphere that came with the original will be glad to know that all the 21st Century bells, whistles, and high tech restoration couldn't make this one sound clean. And we mean that in the best possible way. Running through monstrous track after monstrous track, even heard through the other side of 25 years and without a massive venue rig, it's impossible not to pick up on the sense of immersion that has always defined Swans.

Review: Goodbye Esmond, Hello Kelvin is a stylish and wide-angle look at electro that explores every different mood and groove possible. The opener is a mournful scene-setter with downbeat chords but hopeful wisps of melody. 'Micro Machines' takes flight on slick, wet claps and driving kicks and 'Beam' is a brain-cleansing bit of cosmic electro pureness. There is a coy electro-funk to 'Magic Man' that allows you to dream while your feet get stuck in and 'Citrus' is a gorgeous late-night cruise on far-sighted chords that brim with emotion. The second 12" is just as classy and packed with evocative feelings.

Review: The 40th anniversary of the start-point of the career of Billy Bragg, British singer-songwriter and activist whose music's stark sociopolitical conscience has gripped fans and protesters alike since 1983. While the original box set contains 14 CDs with more than 300 songs - including each of his 12 studio albums, non-album singles and B-sides, session tracks, rare live recordings, collaborations and previously unreleased material - this version comes pressed on orange vinyl and distills 40 years of music down to just 13 tracks!

Review: Scott Monteith is the Berlin-based but Canadian-born artist best known as Deadbeat, stepping out with new alias Ark Welders Guild. It is an audio-visual performance and recording project with Italian singer and curator Letizia Trussi, whom he met in winter 2021 and has since formed a strong creative bond. They work in Trussi's Rooms of Kairos studio and have already cooked up two album length pieces that come on Monteith's BLKRTZ imprint. Mons Clepsydra is the first and is an epic drone in four parts with string recordings permeating the moody, grainy, heavy atmospheres.

Review: Ahora, the new record by Melenas, is the polar opposite a third-album slump. Other bands might suffer from a lack of inspiration typical of such a critical creative moment, but this Spanish quartet reappears more invincible than ever, reassembled with a splendid palette of sounds raising the question: can you make jangle pop and garage rock with synthesizers? The likes of 'K2' and 'Bang' recall a resounding yes; in fact, the glorious throb of analogue keyboards, which dominate the album, do not betray Melenas' sound, and in fact propel it to an ascended pop heaven. Textured vintage synths, such as the Korg Delta or the Yamaha PSR-36, provide and maintain said immediacy, also imprinting a fascinating gamut by stretching the band's sonic identity, a transformation heard not only in the the crystalline pop of '1986', but the sombre, but moving undertones of 'Flor de la Frontera'.

Review: Indeep's 'Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life' is one of the most recognisable disco tunes of its generation, but also the title of the group's 1983 album. The New York outfit never had a tune as big as that one again but when something is such a fine mix of boogie, funk and soul as that and loved by everyone universally, does that even matter? The rest of the album which is now being reissued is packed with plenty of other more than useful dancefloor cuts with big hooks, buoyant drums and colourful synth work.

Review: The original soundtrack composed and performed by Jean Michel Jarre for the 1973 French movie 'Les Granges Brulees' (The Burned Barns), directed by Jean Chapot, hears a reissue. The soundtrack was originally released in 1973 by Eden Roc and features experimental electronic music influenced by Jarre's work at the G.R.M (Groupe de Recherches Musicales). Now re-released by Transversales Disques, its various concrete meanderings and mysterious polyrhythmic resonances continue to beguile.

Review: We're still not quite sure why fabric rebranded their much loved mix series because the fabric present series seems to be very similar in that it is unbound by genre and chases only the best DJs in the game. Saoirse is one of those and makes a fine entry here that is on the header end of the spectrum following on from efforts from the likes of Sherelle, TSHA and MCDE. Her functional, low slung sounds are perfect for late night moment slots in the groove with cuts from the likes of Luca Lozano, Rinse FM founder Geeneus and many more all making for a storytelling mix.

Solar Music arrives vida Concord Jazz and though rooted in jazz, very much finds the band expanding their horizons and exploring the spaces in between traditional genres. Their dynamic approach to recording sees the band draw on their own personal heritages and upbringing in Richmond to blend together elements of soul, funk, rock, and hip-hop. Several top guests including Pink Siifu, Charlie Hunter, Braxton Cook, Jay Prince, Nappy Nina, Keyon Harrold, Michael Millions and more all feature.

Review: Pont Neuf returns with an eight excellent volume of its Hexagonal Club series with a load more vital artists offering up their own distinctive take on deep house. The tracks have been sufficiently well sequence so as to play out like a DJ set, too. DJ Psychiatre kicks off with the lazy cosmic depths of 'Subtle Illusion' before a great female soul vocal brings warmth to Mira Lo's nice and vibey 'Don't Look Back.' The highlights keep on coming with the super serene sounds of Berzingue's 'Riviera' and glossy, glowing keys of KX9000's 'Meatloaf.' This is a stylish and European brand of deep house that makes a welcome addition to your racks.

Review: Completing a trio of reissues of Katy Perry's iconic breakthrough albums, this commemorative edition of Prism comes 10 years after its original release. Lyrically, this was where Perry shifted her tone to a more thoughtful approach reflecting on mindfulness and self-empowerment, drawing on her personal life in more detail to deliver a compelling message to her adoring followers. It's still delivered with the infectious dance pop savvy that rocketed her to fame in the first place, but equally reflects her desire to move beyond the basic expectations of her fanbase and keep them on their toes. Pressed up as a double vinyl edition in appropriately clear wax, this is the definitive edition of Prism which is a must for any Perry fan to own.

Review: Distrikt Paris head honcho Bassam is back with a superb double album that defines his own unique take on the underground. It is genre-defying and widescreen in its cope as it flows freely from sound to sound. 'Electronic Rhapsody' is a superb symphony of lush synth design and airy breakbeats that keep you suspended in space. 'Apres Faut Aimer La Fete' brings twisted acid to slick tech house beats and 'Sos Marrakech' brings a more retro synth sound with crashing hits and stiff, angular rhythms. Elsewhere are more poppy sounding melodies and synths on 'Panorama Vision' and a turbocharged future tech cut 'LAP Memory' (40ine mix) is another late nightlight.

Review: Johnstown, Pennsylvania isn't the first town on everyone's lips when it comes to deep dive electronics. But then, sadly, most people still don't seem to have encountered Nondi. Better known to some of those who have as Tatiana Triplin, the US producer and head of the 'net label HRR has developed a cult following for her experimental takes on some already quite leftfield electronic genres: breakcore and footwork, alongside Detroit-hued techno. What's remarkable about all this is the fact she confesses to only really having direct experiences of these genres online, as oppose to amid the sweat and frenzy of the situations they were first intended for. While this might lead some to assuming her work lacks authenticity, nothing could be further from the truth - it's all so authentic because the interpretations are entirely hers.

Review: A true totem of UK folk music, Bert Jansch's Avocet remains one of the finest records the Scottish musician ever committed to tape. The grand scope of the 18-minute title track is worth the price of entry alone, but of course there's so much to savour as Jansch takes us on a tour through some of his favourite avian friends. This is a special commemorative edition of the 1979 album, packaged with six interchangeable cover designs from illustrator Hannah Alice depicting all of the birds Jansch references on the album. There are also three downloadable bonus tracks bundled with the album, which were recorded live in Italy in 1977.

Modern Classical
Placelessness I (18:12)
Placelessness II (20:33)
Review: It's fair to say Placelessness is the work of an Australian experimental supergroup. Oren Ambarchi has been a towering figure of hyper-minimalism since the mid-80s, most notably creating tense and elongated stretches of recordings and performance using guitar tone. Robbie Avenaim is an accomplished experimental drummer, and Chris Abrahams heads up The Necks. That's a very condensed biography for three incredibly accomplished musicians who finally make good on years of live collaborations and criss-crossed pathways to deliver a stunning album which brings their respective qualities into sharp relief, somehow fuller than their solo efforts without losing the vital subtlety and patience which has guided them to greatness.

Review: Anches En Maat is the first new album from Grails in over a half-decade - following the masterful Chalice Hymnal in 2017 - and their first album recorded with all members in the studio together since Doomsdayer's Holiday in 2008. A strange mixture of 1980s softcore, daytime soap opera lounge and nods to musique concrete make this the group's most challenging full-length project yet, with the likes of 'Black Rain' and 'Sad & Illegal' seeming to toe the lines of everything from lost cinematic soul to elemental prog, with the spectre of film seeming to haunt its every lilt and impact.

Review: The third, controversial final album from Seattle's Nirvana should require little to no introduction. Repressed, remastered and redefined again and again, the Steve Albini-produced, mainstream-eschewing swansong has become one of the ugliest left-turns the 90's grunge scene ever spat up, and the subject of much heated internal fan debate over which is the definitive version. Celebrating its 30-year anniversary with a super-deluxe box set, boasting eight LPs made up of additional live performances as well as a myriad of memorabilia from the In Utero era, for the more lackadaisical collectors, there's this single LP gatefold pressing in a premium 'tip-on' sleeve similar to 2021's reissue of Nevermind, which comes with a bonus 10" of b-sides also featured on the monstrous deluxe edition.

Thank You For Hearing Me (5:28)
Review: The world was stunned by Sinead O'Connor's untimely death, but in such periods it's only right to cast our minds back over her huge body of work and be reminded of her talent. It's no surprise to see her seminal early albums getting reissued and 1993's Universal Mother is right up there with her most cherished works. In typical O'Connor style the album opens up with a quote from prominent feminist Germaine Greer, but the album was in fact a relatively grounded, direct affair with plenty of accessible grooves from the rolling 'Fire On Babylon' to the spiritually charged 'Thank You For Hearing Me', reportedly written about her relationship with Peter Gabriel.

Review: In the many-sided legacy Sinead O'Connor left in her wake, there were many surprises and anomalies which benefit from a fresh appraisal since her tragic passing. Her 1992 album Am I Not Your Girl? had a mixed reception on its release, as she paused on her contemporary dance-tinged pop production to indulge in big band and torch song covers. Similarly to Bjork tackling 'It's Oh So Quiet', it was a divisive move in a career full of them, but in the fullness of time these sincere pieces are but another vehicle for O'Connor's incredible voice, proving she was as versatile as she was forthright. A one of a kind talent, never to be repeated.

Review: Electronic duo Tosca (Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber), based in Vienna, was founded in the fallout of the success of the former's Kruder & Dorfmeister project - albeit during a time when Dorfmeister wanted to explore other sonic worlds. Now, they've come a long way since then; and a testament to this endurance comes in the form of their most recent album Mirage. Named after a tiny cafe in Vienna - halfway between Rupert's home and the Tosca studio - the album also takes its namesake from the alternative word for a fata morgana, i.e. the optical illusion of strange shapes sometimes glimpsed on distant ocean horizons. All that in mind, we're met here with a full-length remix project of the original album, in keeping with a longstanding tradition that every album of theirs hears a remix.

Review: Diamonds & Pearls was the sound of Prince stepping into the 90s and making it his own, embracing a slick, big-budget production and dabbling in new jack swing and house as much as his more traditional, soulful songwriting. It's fit to burst with classics, not least the huge singles 'Gett Off', 'Cream' and 'Diamonds & Pearls' itself, but there's so many other gems to savour on this seminal album from the purple wonder. 'Strollin', 'Willing & Able' and knockout closer 'Live 4 Love' are but four highlights. Newly remastered and repressed on double vinyl, you can re-acquaint yourself with some of the finest work from a true genius.

They have served up countless global hits as well as more underground sounds, and recently their vast back catalogue is back in the spotlight as Late Night Tales have reissued three of their most superb compilations. Off the back of that, now comes this greatest hits album which is billed as GA25: All The Hits & More to mark their quarter of a century in the game. Some of the tunes on it have had a touch-up edit to bring them bang up to date and many of these are still much loved from party starters like 'Superstylin' to more downtempo delights like 'At The River.'

Review: Black Truffle continues to document the late-era work of legendary American experimental composer Alvin Lucier with a second volume of Works For The Ever Present Orchestra from Alvin Lucier. He passed away aged 90 back in 2021 but leaves a fine legacy including these two works which were written for Zurich ensemble The Ever Present Orchestra in 2016. They are drone pieces built around the electric guitar he had begun to explore back in 2013. In his hands, they sound like slow sweep pure wave oscillators and make for suspense sound worlds full of tension and inherent drama. The flip side piece is the more austere of the two.

Review: King Diamond fronted, proto black metal legends Mercyful Fate, are a group that require little introduction to any black-hearted soul who considers themselves a true metal fan. Following on from 1993's reunion album Into The Shadows, their fourth full-length Time would arrive the very next year just in time (no pun intended) for Halloween 1994. Now almost three decades on, both lifers and newcomers alike have an opportunity to spin this underrated gem in its truest form. With lyrical topics delving into the macabre and Satanic, with even the standout cut 'The Mad Arab' detailing the H.P. Lovecraft character Abdul Alhazred, who authored the fictional forbidden tome of occult lore The Necronomicon, this is a grandiose, theatrical and Satanic Panic pushing collection of classic, parents upsetting, falsetto shrieking gothic heavy metal for all seasons.

Mala's imperious dubstep touch brings some low-end pressure to 'Low Ceilings' or Shy One chopping up 'Learning Lessons' in her peerless deft style, there's a lot of ground covered by this considered gathering of minds. Special mention goes to Equiknoxx's Gavsborg and Shanique Marie, bringing a sweetly soulful touch to 'To Your Heart'.

Review: Led Zeppelin's legacy remains undiminished after all this time, setting a new precedent for British hard rock as the 60s dissipated into the 70s and infusing their blues-derived sound with pastoral folk sensibilities through each subsequent album. Die hard Zepp heads will fight tooth and nail over which album is their best, but the landmark IV distills the best qualities of the band into one flawless, eternally iconic album. From the raucous opening salvo of 'Black Dog' and 'Rock & Roll' through the lofty classic 'Stairway To Heaven' right up to the raunchy delta blues and much sampled breakbeat of 'When The Levee Breaks', this is an album which should be etched on the mind of everyone, worldwide. This repress comes on clear wax - one for the collectors as much as those discovering the album for the first time.

Review: Paul Purgas and James Ginzburg's Emptyset project has gone on quite the journey, emerging from Bristol's experimental underground to head in the direction of austere European brutalism and noise exploration. Recent albums have appeared on Thrill Jockey, but now they return to their regular home Subtext and reconnect with their West Country roots by assembling this series of sound experiments with a soundsystem physicality in mind. It's still sharply angled, challenging fare, but there's more than enough weight to do the damage, not least with the experimental outlook of so many strong dances these days.

Review: Jazzman have been capitalising on their kinship with revered digger Greasy Mike by offering him a series of compilations which shine a light on some of the wildly rare records contained in his considerable archives. Following prior themes from Middle-Eastern Harem and Shipwrecked On A Tropical Island, Mike turns his attention to "the sublime, seductive sound of the smooth and sultry songstress." You won't find any household names here, but rather a cast of mesmerising, formidable singers set to heartworn jazz ballads. These are no wallflowers and there's more than enough grit to go with their grace, making this a fantastic collection for anyone who savours the sound of 50s and 60s divas with something to say.

He goes deep into minimal, techno and ambient to fuse totters the synthetic and the organic, the real, the imagined and the unreal on a richly rewarding album that makes for a complete listening

Review: Erik Truffaz is a master of cinematic funk and jazz fusions sounds and now after the first entry, Roll, here comes a second part of his cinema stories series. He once again repeats the trick of subbing in his own images for those conjured up by the original soundtracks. Movie director Bruno Nuyten described the project thusly, "beyond the memories of the films that are mentioned, Erik Truffaz's interpretation opens the imagination to other films that have never been made". He's damn right and the sis another superb LP.

The group hasn't played together since 2019's LP Active Imagination but hasn't lost any of its magical touch. This new album Marine Moods is inspired by the sea and takes the form of a fantastic contemporary jazz-fusion sound that draws on Afro, modal and spiritual jazz tropes. There are moments of energy such as on 'Gulf Stream' and more dark and hypnotic moments like 'Hydrothermal' as well as raga-curveballs like 'Journey for Joan'. A fine and fresh record indeed.

Review: In the sprawling tendrils of minimal mastery Ricardo Villalobos has attached his name to, it's not always easy to pick out the stone cold classics. 2003 album Alcachofa is, however, a stand out moment from his career when he proved to be more than just a club 12" artist. Sure, the record is mainly driven by house rhythms, but this was a demonstration of the creative power within the minimal approach and Villalobos could get creative more than most. Originally released on Playhouse and now repressed on four 12"s by Perlon, it's a fitting tribute to a landmark record, now with added tracks from the accompanying Alcachofa Tools 12".

Review: It can often take months or even years of therapy to even begin to start addressing the real reason you're in the room talking to a trained professional. For Gazelle Twin, it has taken three albums - and more than a decade - to get to a point where it feels comfortable enough to turn her razor sharp songwriting gaze inwards. So, whereas before we heard observations on outward looking subject matter, here we take a turn for the insular. The result is an altogether darker experience, musically and thematically. There's a constant sense of drama and tension to this art-pop odyssey, and subjects such as childhood trauma - and its impact on our adult selves - are never off the table. Almost operatic, while there's plenty here to challenge, not least the universal expectation that later in life things get less scary, ultimately Black Dog is also about overcoming and confronting our most existential fears.

Review: Moody Scottish rock experimentalists Mogwai have got a vast catalogue of post-everything sound that goes from the absorbingly dark and heavy soundtrack to the Zidane film to the spacious, noisy and cacophonous rock drawl of albums like Mr Beast. They are also superb in the live area and have played so many times before for BBC radio that they put together Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2003 back in 2005 with some of their favourite bits from seven of those sessions. The album is dedicated to John Peel who hosted the bulk of these in the first place.

What Happened to Yesterday? is, we are told, the first of two albums from the pair that will arrive several months apart. It finds the pair get super hazy and dubby, with psychedelic charm swirling around their absorbing grooves next to subtle cues taken from the diverse likes of DJ Premier and King Jammy. There is a superb Moog-based cover of De La Soul's 'I Am I Be', Afro-Carribean disco in 'Dancehall of Grandeur' and epic jazz-rock on Volcano Sound' so dig in and prepare to be wowed.

Recorded between Bologna, Milan and Rome overseen by Mills himself, Vernacular takes us deep into the heart of Reyes' vision, leading with the standout track 'At Night'. Anna Bassy's vocal sits front and centre on the original version of the track, but the B-side offers up alternative versions which let Reyes' assembled players shine through. Sides C and D offer up further excursions into hidden possibilities from the project such as the epic synth symphony of 'Sound Manifesto', mirroring the warm, instrumental charm of Mills' own Millsart releases and recent collaborations with Jean-Phi Dary.

Rather than getting bogged down in brief biopics, then, let's just say this is definitely one for the guitar-loving diggers, who won't find it many other places. Sonically speaking there's plenty of reference points to what was happening across South America musically at the time. While steeped in conservative traditions (often due to the enforced religion through colonialism situation), the decades after World War II were fertile ground for anti-establishment youth movements across the world, and this continent was no different. So, while the exotic lyrics and jangling six strings don't scream "smash the system" today, you'd better believe this was well against the grain back in 1971.

Review: A five-track EP of rarities by Alex Chilton, the American singer and songwriter best known as the lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star, but whose later efforts led to an extended ambassadorship of the US avant-garde underground. The bulk of the tracks on ‘My Rival’ originate from Chilton’s earliest days, circa. 1975; at this critical juncture, Big Star was no more, and Chilton was teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Saved by his former bandmate, but still confidant, Chris Bell, they soon found themselves re-roused by the power of music, holing up together in Chilton’s bedroom and recording this short but wild set of bluesy experiments. Easily mistaken as the early murmurations of a Big Star reunion, this project should be taken as an eccentricity unto its own, and wholly deserves its 12” debut after an initial RSD run.

Review: Mayer Hawthorne came up at the height of Detroit's hip-hop movement, playing DJ sets and making beats from his hometown of nearby Ann Arbor. He dropped his debut release via Stones Throw in 2008 and since then has put out four more albums and picked up plenty of critical support as well as radio plays across the world. For All Time is his fifth album and one that crosses even more musical boundaries than before with lyrics that explore "the complexities of love and the raw emotions that accompany it." It is dark, brooding, erotic and stylish with hints of 1920's jazz club to it. A great return. .

Review: Christian Gaubert's 'Last Exit' is a French soul masterpiece. It has been carefully remastered from the original tapes and reissued here so standout rare groove gems 'Sweet Maryline' and 'Sweet and Fool Like a Child' sound better than ever. It's an album that showcases the great skills of the prolific arranger and composer Gaubert alongside guest spots from some of the key contemporaries in the French jazz scene of the 70s. Boogie and funk help colour the grooves with the likes of 'Going Ups & Coming Downs' being deep down and delicious jams with killer baselines and lavish strings that cannot fail to light up your life and swell your heart.

Review: .For the 100th volume in their ongoing 'Mood Series' of albums, Greyscale has chosen to offer up something very special: a double disc set of previously unreleased "secret weapons" produced by label main man Grad_U. It's an undeniably brilliant collection all told, with the long-serving artist offering up a rich selection of deep techno and dub techno treats in his distinctive style. Highlights are plentiful and include (but are in no way limited to), the house-infused, hypnotic techno positivity of 'Run Out', the intergalactic dub techno pulse of 'Compound', the acid-flecked intensity of 'Seismic Investigations', the immersive rhythmic sound soup of 'Whispering Rails', and the melodic flutter of 'Orbital Outpost'.

Review: Amongst the many legendary recordings of The Cramps live in action, the bootlegs of their 'The Last Supper' show in April 1980 in London ranks as one of the most desirable. It captures the band in their ascendance, already legends but equally with something to prove as they clawed their way out of the graveyard and into prominence. Previous editions were from ropey tapes which had sped the music up by some eight percent, but now the original master tapes have been found and the recording is presented in much better fidelity - all the better to hear the greatest psychobilly band that ever emerged from parts unknown.
