Aja (by Don Breithaupt)
Cat: 428425 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: Aja was the album that made Steely Dan a commercial force on the order of contemporaries like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Chicago. A double-platinum, Grammy-winning bestseller, it lingered on the Billboard charts for more than a year and spawned three hit singles. Odd, then, that its creators saw it as an "ambitious, extended" work, the apotheosis of their anti-rock, anti-band, anti-glamour aesthetic. Populated by thirty-fi ve mostly jazz session players, Aja served up prewar song forms, mixed meters and extended solos to a generation whose idea of pop daring was Paul letting Linda sing lead once in a while. And, impossibly, it sold. Including an in-depth interview with Donald Fagen, this book paints a detailed picture of the making of a masterpiece.

Endtroducing (by Eliot Wilder) Endtroducing (by Eliot Wilder)
Cat: 428423 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: What resonated about Endtroducing when it was released in 1996, and what makes it still resonate today, is the way in which it loosens itself from the mooring of the known and sails off into an uncharted territory that seems to exist both in and out of time. Josh Davis is not only a master sampler and turntablist supreme, he is also a serious archeologist with a world-thirsty passion (what Cut Chemist refers to as Josh's "spidey sense") for seeking out, uncovering and then ripping apart the discarded graces of some other generation that "pile of broken dreams" and weaving them back together into a tapestry of chronic bleakness and beauty. Over the course of several long conversations with Josh Davis (DJ Shadow), we learn about his early years in California, the friends and mentors who helped him along the way, his relationship with Mo'Wax and James Lavelle, and the genesis and creation of his widely acknowledged masterpiece, Endtroducing.

I Am Very Far: The Lyrics
Cat: 430751 Rel: 21 Jul 11

Hard bound lyric book containing the full scope of Sheff's vision for Okkervil River's album I Am Very Far (36 pages, hardback, black & white)
Notes: Will Sheff of Okkervil River has long been recognized for his writing: a contributor to McSweeney's, Sheff was nominated for a Grammy for his liner notes for Roky Erickson's 2010 album True Love Cast Out All Evil, The New York Times declared that, Sheff writes like a novelist.

The I Am Very Far: The Lyrics is a hard bound lyric book containing the full scope of Sheff's vision for his latest and most refined album to date, Okkervil River's I Am Very Far. The I Am Very Far: The Lyrics is meant to function as a distinct entrance point into the content of the music. More than a complement to the albums themselves, Sheff's prose weaves tales both subtle and dynamic and enriches the content of his songs. Including the lyrics for Mermaid and other songs recorded during the I Am Very Far sessions, the book is a complete work in its own right.

It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (by Christopher R Weingarten) It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (by Christopher R Weingarten)
Notes: Christopher R Weingarten provides a thrilling account of how the Bomb Squad produced such a singular-sounding record: engineering, sampling, scratching, constructing, deconstructing, reconstructing even occasionally stomping on vinyl that sounded too clean. Using production techniques that have never been duplicated, the Bomb Squad plundered and reconfigured their own compositions to make frenetic splatter collages; they played samples by hand together in a room like a rock band to create a not quite right tension; they hand-picked their samples from only the ugliest squawks and sirens.

Weingarten treats the samples used on Nation Of Millions as molecules of a greater whole, slivers of music that retain their own secret histories and folk traditions. Can the essence of a hip-hop record be found in the motives, emotions and energies of the artists it samples? Is it likely that something an artist intended 20 years ago would re-emerge anew? This is a compelling and thoroughly researched investigation that tells the story of one of hip-hop's landmark albums.

Loveless (by Mike McGonigal)
Cat: 428431 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: This epoch-making indie record of the early '90s effortlessly combines dense swathes of guitar noise and dance music. This turned out to be their last record, guitarist and studio maestro Kevin Shields having set their standards so high it was impossible to surpass them. Indeed such was the perfectionism that went towards this record, studio costs almost bankrupted Alan McGee's Creation Records - only bailed out by the success of Oasis! Shields is now playing with Primal Scream. Includes the classics Loomer, Soon and To Here Knows When.

Low (by Hugo Wilcken)
Cat: 428424 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: "One day I blew my nose and half my brains came out." Los Angeles, 1976. David Bowie is holed up in his Bel-Air mansion, drifting into drug-induced paranoia and confusion. Obsessed with black magic and the Holy Grail, he's built an altar in the living room and keeps his fingernail clippings in the fridge. There are occasional trips out to visit his friend Iggy Pop in a mental institution. His latest album is the cocaine-fuelled Station To Station (Bowie: "I know it was recorded in LA because I read it was"), which welds R&B rhythms to lyrics that mix the occult with a yearning for Europe, after three mad years in the New World. Bowie has long been haunted by the angst-ridden, emotional work of the Die Brucke movement and the Expressionists. Berlin is their spiritual home, and after a chaotic world tour, Bowie adopts this city as his new sanctuary. Immediately he sets to work on Low, his own expressionist mood-piece.

One Step Beyond (by Terry Edwards) One Step Beyond (by Terry Edwards)
Cat: 375515 Rel: 23 Nov 09
Notes: 33 1/3 present Madness in 'One Step Beyond' by Terry Edwards. Considering the vast number of records they have sold worldwide over the years, surprisingly few books have been published about Madness. This book is written as a kind of lateral-thinking Rock Family Tree, with 'One Step Beyond' as the taproot. Since recording that album in 1979, Madness have experienced just about everything - an unrivalled run in the UK charts, critical acclaim, commercial success with both singles and albums, sundry band members going AWOL, the obligatory covers album and extraordinary attendances at their reunion shows. Having grown up with 'One Step Beyond', from its release when he was working in a record shop, through recording on Two Tone with his band the Higsons, to working with Bedders, then finally touring with Madness and playing many of the songs from the album; Terry Edwards has written this affectionate and entertaining book as insider and outsider, fan, contemporary and fellow musician. The result puts everything in perspective, and is a unique social history of the national institution that is Madness. Terry Edwards plays sax, trumpet, guitar and keyboards with his own band, the Scapegoats, and in session for innumerable artists including Gallon Drunk, Robyn Hitchcock, Tindersticks and Lydia Lunch/Big Sexy Noise. His catalogue, both new and old, is released on his own imprint, Sartorial Records. He lives in London. This is his first book.

Paul's Boutique (by Dan LeRoy)
Cat: 428432 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: This short book is a history of the making of the second album released by The Beastie Boys, which was a pioneering masterwork of sampling-based music. It documents both the legal and social conflicts around the recording of an album, and the specific concerns raised by music that samples other music. The album would not be legally recordable today, and indeed its legality was nebulous even in 1989.

Alongside the funny stories, gossip, and the interesting depiction of mid-1980s New York and Los Angeles music scenes, the most interesting narrative is the account of the creative practices that led to the album, which have little to do with the standard story of lone geniuses or teamwork between a tightly knit group with clearly-defined roles. The producers, collaborators, sound engineers, performers, and the actual sound-samples all intertwine and interact within the social and musical milieus of regional club cultures, art, and music in complex and storied ways.

Left unexamined is the relationship between their practices and the standard texts of contracts between the parties that allocate various rights, royalties and fees: these details are only mentioned when they are a source of tension.
However, for people interested in how creativity actually works, and how significant (some would say great) works of art are created, it is a splendid account of the complexities that make copyright law an odd fit and a source of tension.

People's Instinctive Travels & The Paths Of Rhythm (by Shawn Taylor)
Notes: One of the finest hip-hop albums ever made, A Tribe Called Quest's debut record (featuring stone-cold classics like "Can I Kick It?" and "Bonita Applebum") took the idea of the boasting hip-hop male and turned it on its head. For many listeners, when this non-traditional, surprisingly feminine album was released, it was like hearing an entirely new form of music.

In this book, Shawn Taylor explores the creation of the album as well as the impact it had on him at the time - a 17-year-old high-school geek who was equally into hip-hop, punk, new wave, skateboarding, and Dungeons & Dragons: all of a sudden, with this one album, the world made more sense. He has spent many years investigating this album, from the packaging to the song placement to each and every sample - Shawn Taylor knows this record like he knows his tattoos, and he's finally been able to write a fascinating and highly entertaining book about it.

Pink Flag (by Wilson Neate)
Cat: 428428 Rel: 01 Jan 90
Notes: In contrast with many of their punk peers, Wire were enigmatic and cerebral, always keeping a distance from the crowd. Although Pink Flag appeared before the end of 1977, it was already a meta-commentary on the punk scene and was far more revolutionary musically than the rest of the competition. Few punk bands moved beyond pared-down rock 'n' roll and garage rock, football-terrace sing-alongs or shambolic pub rock and, if we're honest, only a handful of punk records hold up today as anything other than increasingly quaint period pieces. While the majority of their peers flogged one idea to death and paid only lip service to punk's Year Zero credo, Wire took a genuinely radical approach, deconstructing song conventions, exploring new possibilities and consistently reinventing their sound. THIS IS A CHORD. THIS IS ANOTHER. THIS IS A THIRD. NOW FORM A BAND, proclaimed the caption to the famous diagram in a UK fanzine in 1976 and countless punk acts embodied that do-it-yourself spirit. Wire, however, showed more interesting ways of doing it once you'd formed that band and they found more compelling uses for those three mythical chords.

Prince's Sign O' The Times 33 1/3
Cat: 428430 Rel: 01 Jan 90

Book cuts to the heart of the music on Prince's Magnum Opus of 1987 and demonstrates many different ways of writing about music (136 pages, paperback, black & white)
Notes: 33 1/3 is a new series of short books about critically acclaimed and much-loved albums of the last 40 years. Focusing on one album rather than an artist's entire output, the books dispense with the standard biographical background that fans know already and cut to the heart of the music on each album. The authors provide fresh, original perspectives, often through their access to and relationships with the key figures involved in the recording of these albums.

By turns obsessive, passionate, creative and informed, the books in this series demonstrate many different ways of writing about music. (A task which can be, as Elvis Costello famously observed, as tricky as dancing about architecture.) What binds this series together and what brings it to life, is that all of the authors, musicians, scholars and writers are deeply in love with the album they have chosen.

Michaelangelo Matos takes a personal look at Prince's Magnum Opus of 1987, the greatest and most idiosyncratic double album of its era.

Re Make/Re Model: Written By Michael Bracewell
Cat: 473616 Rel: 22 Nov 12

Roxy Music hard cover book 427 pages
Notes: In 1972 an English rock band released its first album to instant critical acclaim: Roxy Music. Here was a group that looked as though it came not only from another era, but also from another planet-a band in which art, fashion, and music would combine to create, in Bryan Ferry's words, above all, a state of mind. Written with the assistance, for the first time, of all those involved, including Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Andy Mackay, and Phil Manzanera, Re-Make/Re-Model tells how Pop Art, the 1960s underground, and Swinging London were transformed into a unique sound and look-theatrical, arch, literate, clever, sexy, thrilling. In the tradition of Jean Stein and George Plimpton's Edie, Re-Make/Re-Model is the story of extraordinary individuals and exceptional creativity-and nothing less than the history of an era in music and pop culture.

A pictoral career overview including album art, picture sleeves and record labels, plus an extensive discography + 45RPM of early recordings
Notes: Sly & The Family Stone: One of the most innovative groups popular music has ever known, a band that instigated a musical revolution!

Led by Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart, The Family Stone's personnel was black and white, and male and female, and black and white, making it likely the first fully integrated group in the history of popular music. Starting in 1966, their sound was a unique, unknown fusion of soul, jazz, rock, R&B and psychedelia. Sly himself was a master musician who wrote, arranged and produced all the group's material, fashioning ingenious musical arrangements filled with syncopated rhythm, pop melody and unexpected harmony.
This book covers the entire discography of Sly & The Family Stone. It is a complete career overview, from the first gospel recording by the Stewart Four, through to Sly's most recent releases, as well as each members solo work in the years before and since, illustrated with vinyl releases from all over the world. It's the book all Sly fans have been waiting for. As a special bonus, copies come with a 45 reproduction of the hyper-rare Stewart Four 78 from 1952.

Songs In The Key Of Life (by Zeth Lundy)
Notes: Like all double albums, Songs in the Key of Life is imperfect but audacious. If its titular concern - life - doesn't exactly allow for rigid focus, it's still a fiercely inspired collection of songs and one of the definitive soul records of the 1970s. Stevie Wonder was unable to control the springs of his creativity during that decade. Upon turning 21 in 1971, he freed himself from the Motown contract he'd been saddled with as a child performer, renegotiated the terms, and unleashed hundreds of songs to tape. Over the next five years, Wonder would amass countless recordings and release his five greatest albums - as prolific a golden period as there has ever been in contemporary music. But Songs in the Key of Life is different from the four albums that preceded it; it's an overstuffed, overjoyed, maddeningly ambitious encapsulation of all the progress Stevie Wonder had made in that short space of time.

Notes: The doors are rock royalty. Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore reinvented rock 'n' roll in the 60s, and their influence can be felt even today. Now, for the first time, the living members of the band are opening up their personal archives to their fans, telling their story in their own words. This book is filled with untold anecdotes and never before seen photos from their private collections. Fans can learn first hand what really went on in America's most enigmatic and mythical band.

The Encyclopedia Of New Wave The Encyclopedia Of New Wave
Cat: 539586 Rel: 01 Jan 90

304 page paperback book documenting the hugely influential New Wave musical movement of the late 70's and 80's
Notes: The Talking Heads, The Boomtown Rats, Blondie, Elvis Costello: this fun new addition to the successful Encyclopedia series celebrates the hugely influential New Wave musical movement of the late 1970s and 80s. Originating as a less-aggressive sister movement to punk, New Wave encompassed a wide range of styles, from Brit pub-rock to electronica, synth-pop, and even ska.

The Encyclopedia of New Wave comprehensively captures this eclectic music, all of which enthralled the newly emergent MTV generation. With its tendency toward romantic minimalism, dark dance beats, and gender-bending antics, New Wave changed the course of popular musical history, as well as fashion and art.
