Review: In the summer of 2017, New Order returned to Granada Studios in Manchester - the site of their first TV appearance - to perform a special concert. With the accompaniment of a "12-piece synthesizer orchestra" and a stunning, ever-changing stage set designed by Liam Gillick, the legendary Manchester band delivered an extended set featuring radically reworked versions of tracks from their back catalogue. This evocative live album presents the recording of the concert in its entirety, with Bernard Sumner and company mixing bona fide hits ("Shellshock", "Bizarre Love Triangle") with album tracks, lesser-celebrated songs and the odd stunning soundscape (a particularly beautiful version of "Elegia"). As you'd expect, it's superb and a cut above most live albums.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve with split on spine, but otherwise in working order***
London's legendary Mute institution goes back to its roots and digs up some of the best work by one of the UK's finest Cabaret Voltaire. These guys don't really need an introduction give the fact that they're pretty much responsible for the rise of post-punk right through to the birth of techno. It was about time a new compilation of their stuff was released, especially one as brutally on-point as this one! All the classics such as "Nag Nag Nag", "Kneel To The Boss" and "On Every Other Street" are one here but the more obscure rarities that were previously only available on 7" are the real winners. "Just Fascination", for example, is one you'll certainly want on a longer, re-mastered cut! Downright essential!

Review: In 1979, Cabaret Voltaire - then consisting of all three founder members, Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson - recorded a soundtrack for an experimental film "for two projectors" by Babeth Mondini. 40 years on, that soundtrack has finally been given a release. It's similar in tone to some of the Sheffield experimentalists' other soundtrack work from the period, offering discordant, unsettling and otherworldly sound collages that fuse heavily modified and processed instrumental parts (guitar, bass, drums, clarinet, saxophone) with tape loops, sampled dialogue and the band's ever-present electronic tones. Whether you're an obsessive Cabs fan or not, it's well worth a listen. This is, after all, a slice of previously hidden musical history.

Review: Richard H Kirk was rightly praised for 2020's Shadow of Fear, his first album since turning Cabaret Voltaire into a solo project back in 2014, and his recently follow-up EP, Shadow of Funk. Both distilled the essence of the Cabs' club-friendly industrial funk sound, re-formatting it for the 21st century. Dekadrone, though, is a different proposition altogether. Focused not on clubs but on immersive home listening, the four-phase, single track set removes Kirk's clanking, often paranoid beats in favour of dystopian aural textures (think dark, droning tones, abstract electronics, apocalyptic ambience and dirt-encrusted samples). Those who prefer the Cabs' more experimental, ambient-leaning works will love it.

Review: In 2015, long-serving Slovenian experimentalists Laibach became the first Western band to perform in North Korea, including a number of songs from "The Sound of Music" - a favourite in the DPRK since the 1960s - alongside their own material. Three years on, and with the assistance of Silence's Boris Benko and vocalist Marina Martensson, they've finally delivered their interpretation of the musical film's familiar soundtrack. Swaying between rock balladry, experimental synth-pop, darker tones and industrial style fuzziness, the band's covers are both revolutionary and revelatory, as staples such as "The Lonely Goatherd", "My Favorite Things" and "Do-Re-Mi" are given radical makeovers. As they did at the concert that inspired the set, they also give their interpretation of some traditional North Korean folk songs.

Review: If it's been a while since Adult's last album, there's a very good explanation. Back in 2014, they successfully applied for an arts grant to turn their studio into a kind of drop-in centre for some of their musical heroes. Since then, a vast roll-call of electronic music talents old and new have spent three weeks living, collaborating and recording with Adult in Detroit. The results are showcased on Detroit House Guests. Combining their usual EBM, industrial, electro and experimental influences with those of their selected guests - Nitzer Ebb's Douglas J. McCarthy, noted experimentalist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Swans man Michael Gira included - it's an album that feels like a wholehearted celebration of the power of artistic collaboration.

Review: Krautrock legends, visionary iconoclasts and one of the most influential bands of the last half century they may be, but not many folk would have had Can pegged as a singles band, given that their origins in the kaftan-clad realm of the late-'60s and early-'70s tended more to full-length explorations in which the full force of their expression could be unleashed. Review: This may be the last chapter in what stands proud as the mightiest resurrection of a classic band in modern times, yet for all the melancholy to be suffered if this does prove to be the case, frankly, what a way to go. 'The Glowing Man' is full to bursting with the kind of panoramic soundscapes, intense existential gravitas and dramatic crescendos that have characterised Michael Gira & Co's post-2010 output, yet has restraint and subtlety to match its almighty sturm-und-drang - these colossal songs triumph just as much through their dynamics and beauty as their volume and brute force, crowning a startling achievement a singular and overwhelming primal force deserving of awe aplenty.

Review: If you still haven't clocked on to Liars, they're a bunch of seriously hip dudes form Brooklyn who've been making music since the turn of the century. Having always stuck close to London's now-mythical Mute imprint, 2014 has been a busy year for them, one which has seen them release their sixth album for the label, the aptly named Mess. If that wasn't enough, this latest EP is a rip-roaring remix affair of the LP's "Pro Anti Anti" track, which sees both a varied and truly talented bunch of artists having a go and re-jigging their noisy strand of art-rock into unrecognisable shapes and forms. The original itself is a cross between The Strokes on a serious dose of downers and Cabaret Voltaire's chest-bursting power electronics, and while Daniel Miller's remix doesn't steer too far away form the original, Factory Floor come up with a jittering, broken techno version. Truss adds in a much-needed helping of bleeps and cavernous kick drums on top of the original's wailing vocals, while Nest Of Teens stand out thanks to a marvellous reinterpretation of Liars' bassline. Beauts, the lot of 'em.

Review: Ever-changing Slovenian collective Laibach seems to have mellowed with age, with the band's inherent desire to court controversy (see their 2015 performances in North Korea for a relatively recently example) currently curtailed. Love Is Still Alive, which marks their first new music since the release of last year's well-received album Wir Sind das Volk, is actually an "extension" of the music they wrote to soundtrack the 2019 film 'Iron Sky -The Coming Race'. It is, they say, a "trip through space music genres of recent decades" (albeit with bonus nods to country, pop and so on) that loosely tells the story of a spaceship full of post-apocalyptic survivors making their way across the solar system. It's a lot of fun, all told, with the band expertly showcasing the breadth of their musical knowledge as well as skip-fulls of imagination.

Review: It may have taken 42 years, but the Pop Group have finally delivered a dub-wise interpretation of their incredible debut album Y, a 1979 post-punk masterpiece that remains one of the finest dub-influenced, avant-garde rock sets of the period. Fittingly, original producer - and UK dub legend - Dennis Bovell MBE is once again behind the desk, delivering weighty, skeletal and breath-taking interpretations that retain the freewheeling attitude and sonic intensity of the Bristol band's 1979 versions/Skeletal, echo-laden, bass-heavy and impressively stripped back, Bovell's new dub mixes are uniformly brilliant, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the sludgy, slow-motion take on 'Blood Money', the experimental ambient dub treatment of 'Savage Sea', the dancefloor-ready revision of 'We Are The Fire' and the trippy dub-jazz mix of 'Don't Call Me Pain'.

A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.
Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.
