Review: Kris Baha had a big year in 2019 with the release of his debut album on CockTail d'Amore and an EP on Pinkman, and now the Australian body music man in Berlin is back with a high-pressure heater for [Emotional] Especial. "Barely Alive" is the kind of sinewy proto-industrial cut that will appeal to fans of Ministry's earlier work, when the synths reigned supreme and there was pop to match the noir. Especial then call on a cast of remixers to interpret the track in different ways, from Timothy J Fairplay amping up the dystopian disco tropes to Das Ding creating a sleek electro-funk twist with the original's gothic undertones intact.

Review: This Australian and now London-dwelling three-piece made their name by balancing out their psychedelic explorations with a somewhat Madchester-derived pop sensibility, and this second album sees them throwing this delicate balance into orbit by effectively offering more of everything - the sonic textures here are more adventurous, the hallucinogenic swirls of sound more lustrous, yet the choruses are as indelible and infectious as ever. A party album with a 'Screamadelica'-esque experimental edge, 'Every Now And Then' makes these three space cadets sound like genuine contenders.

Review: Some lucky folk managed to bag a copy of this when it was released as part of the Screamadelica 30th Anniversary 12" Singles Box. Suffice to say, many didn't. It's also probably a given to point out the British and global music scenes are still reeling from the untimely and sudden passing of Andrew Weatherall, a studio mastermind and club DJ icon who managed to influence everyone from ambient and techno heads to indie kids, classical fans and heads in just about any other sonic avenue you care to mention. Arguably, though, his most beloved work was around the Screamadelica era, carving out a landmark crossover album from Primal Scream's original material, making stars out of everyone involved and timeless, decade-spanning tracks from singles like 'Come Together' and 'Loaded'. 'Shine Like the Stars' brought that album to a close in spectacular, trippy, emotive style, and has never left our hearts since.

Review: Arlo Parks is now a hugely successful indie artist with many great tunes to her name. One of them came back in 2019 in the form of her Cola EP back when she was just 18 years old. It showcased her smoky, soulful and mournful vocal skills with gentle guitar accoutrements and plenty of dusty vinyl crackle for added authenticity. That title tune is here in all its tender glory while on the flip is 'George' which is yet another standout single that has slightly more upbeat lyrics and prouder production. What a talent she is.

Review: On his new single 'Pacifico Waves', Joel Sarakula takes the scenic route down a pacific coastline, searching for peace, enlightenment and the perfect sunset. Travelling and searching is nothing new to Sarakula: it's almost his default way of being. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia before swapping oceans to live in the UK and more recently onwards to Gran Canaria: "I've been busy making my islands smaller" he jokes. But the music on 'Pacifico Waves' sounds like none of these places: with its easy drum shuffle, soulful guitar hooks and smooth vocal harmonies it distinctly evokes Southern California. It's such a potent portrait of the West Coast that if not for the contemporary lyrics and some modern production techniques, it could be a long lost hit from an early 80s LA studio band.

Review: As part of Downwards' DO series, this 7" continues the theme of industrial, synth-wave strangeness that came to bear such a heavy influence on label boss Regis. Collin Gorman Weiland sounds as though he's been plucked from the seediest nether region of post-punk as the grainy guitar tones of "Curse" call out languidly underneath a thick blanket of distortion. This leaves plenty of room for Antonym's considerably breezier forays into synth-funk to cruise around. There's still an underlying tension in the carefully arranged arpeggios, but compared to the bleak drones of Weiland's own turn, it's thoroughly accessible. Highly recommended.

Review: Having established the C.A.R. project with a clutch of EPs, former Battant chanteuse and all-round coldwave starlet Chloe Raunet will release her debut album under the alias later this year. Before then, two tracks from the album - "Idle Eyes" and "Angelina" - get the remix treatment. Roman Flugel indulges his new wave fantasies with a rather bizarre but quite brilliant remake of "Idle Eyes" - think warped bass, cut-up rhythms and relentless synth melodies - before Planningtorock lay down a more straightforward leftfield electronic disco take on the same track. The Manfredas instrumental version of "Angelina" chugs hard, occasionally breaking down into delightful synth strings and winding melodies, before Benedikt Frey drops a dark, throbbing, acid-flecked take on "Idle Eyes".

Review: Antoni Maovvi and Vercetti Technicolor's Giallo Disco label has always been a decent source of John Carpenter and Italo-inspired horror disco. Here they offer a debut to Parisian horror-synth fetishists The Hunt. There's naturally much to admire, from the intense, "Escape From New York" style thematic pump of "Angoisse" and the sweeping, slo-mo chug of "Brain Test", to the glistening, Carpenter-on-steroids throb of "The Abonination". Check, too, the thunderous analogue botton-end and pulsating alien funk synthesizers of "The Survivor". Arguably best of all, though, is the immersive, almost dreamy feel of the brilliant "Mutation". It is, though, all rather good.

Review: The name Roger Semsroth will be eminently familiar to fans of monotonal, bleep laden techno thanks to his canon of material as Sleeparchive for his own label, Tresor, Repitch and more. Prior to becoming the staple of Berlin techno he now is, Semsroth was creating child like melodies and toy tones as Skanfrom, a project which now returns to Jason Amm's Suction Records for the first time in 12 years. Combine themes tunes and motifs from the original Zelda video game with the sounds of older Rephlex and Skam Records and you are somewhere close to understanding what Postcards, this new Skanfrom album, sounds like.

Review: Dresden don Dunkeltier (aka Sneaker aka Gino 'Der Hammer' Galan) is next up on the Macadam Mambo flex, dipping into his personal armoury of EBM, industrial and post punk favourites for a premium set of edits. If you dug his Rat Life edits this year or got blown away by a Traxx session then you will definitely levitate towards the sounds here as Dunkeltier tweaks Kozmonaut, Absolute Body Control and EM. Do check the mind altering Phase Adjustment of "Tanzmusik" from cult Belgian crew Absolute Body Control which is exactly the sort of fizzing power electronics that will provide a welcome deviation into absolute beat down territory for the more adventurous selectors.

Review: Kernkrach's sublabel, Hertz-Schrittmacher, comes through with a sublime two-tracker by Gotz Langenbruch and Joa Saliena's Epic Dreams; a project reserved to bringing back the musical freedom which so readily characterised the 1980's. The duo have only put out a string of releases, including two self-released LP's, so it's a pleasure to hear what they're up to now. "Kein Paradies" is a bittersweet track led by fast-paced drum machine kicks and poppy German vocals. On the B-side, "Leuccthurm" is more uplifting and club-ready, but still with enough vintage melancholia to be heard in and outside the dance. Two slices of German synth funk for you, give 'em a spin!
