Review: A real doozy of an early Italo, proto-darkwave heater from Fred Ventura-led Fokewulf 190, bound to illicit dancefloor devastation any darn time of year. Straddling the boundary between the more uptempo chapters of Italo and the more austere permutations of synth pop, Fokewulf's timeless anthem lends itself well to DJ Tin Tin and Flemming Dalum's respectful but gently modernised remixes. If anything though, they cast the original in a more innovative light, with its sparse, classy drive.

Review: Originally recorded in the late 1970s and using many of the musicians employed by Diana Ross on her track 'The Boss'. 'Can't Put No Price On Love' has long been regarded as North End's 'long lost' single - an inspired disco workout employing that pre-dates the Arthur Baker/Tony Carbone-helmed project's most famous song, Tee Scott/Larry Levan favourite 'Happy Days'. The original multitrack was unfortunately lost, but the track finally appears, 40-odd years after it was recorded. Whether what we're hearing was finished and mixed at the time is uncertain, but the 'Club Mix' is certainly authentic sounding - a genuinely energetic, joyous and effervescent New York disco number with full orchestration, addictive vocals (Jocelyn Brown & Dennis Collins on backing Vox) and a killer groove. Elsewhere across the EP, we get two versions of 'We Can't Live Like This Anymore' - the synth-laden, solo-heavy disco-boogie style original mix (B2) and a superb 'drum break' percussion tool (A2) - and a brilliantly low-slung instrumental dub-disco cover of The Temptations' 'Cloud 9'.

Review: Pleasure of Love reissue imprint, New Islands, launches with a quiet stormy, soulful Balearic stunner. Kim Yaffa's 'Once Bitten' was recorded in LA and released on a 1989 private press 7", only to be buried in American record bins for decades after. A re-emergence of Yaffa's music on the internet in the last couple years has reached a fever pitch, with collectors thirsting after copies of the record. Now, New Islands has worked directly with the artist to deliver an official reissue, professionally transferred from the mixdown reels, carefully restored, and remastered. The track is an effortless class-act pop tune, with 80s blue eyed soul / Sade inspired sounds, and unknowingly Balearic production that renders it timeless (it's reminiscent of Linda Di Franco, Edie Brickell or 80s Fleetwood Mac). 'Become' is definitely on a similar tip, and as such feels much like an extension of the long form.
Dig a little deeper, though, and scratches begin to show. While the full-length record represented Beach House reaching for the stars, or at least the moon, and stepping into the role of festival headliners, here the sense of pure confidence and occasion is less pronounced. That may not be a bad thing, mind, because while Once came across like a finished article, refined and prepared, things here seem somehow rawer, as though we're sitting in on a session as oppose to getting the signed off product.

'Mindways' is a brilliantly colourful opener with neon lines and bubbling sequences over fleshy drums. 'Touch' channels a bit of Metro Area style nu-disco production with its cowbells, textured bassline and late-night allure, and 'A Little Love' then gets more deep cut and steamy with some sensuous vocals and vast, pillowy kicks. Review: Dadaphonic has a key reissue on their hands with Cranes debut album Fuse. The Cranes was a groundbreaking alternative band from New Hampshire that was led by the brother and sister duo Alison Shaw & Jim Shaw. Their popularity grew as the late 80s turned in the early 90s culminating with an opening slot on The Cure's Wish Tour in 1992. Perfectly blending with Cure in many respects, the Cranes would be re-labeled as Dream Pop in retrospect. Fuse was originally put out in 1986 as a cassette only album. Strangely, 38 years later it was still not brought out on other formats. Until now! This album shows the band in its infant stage honing their craft while longtime fans love the rawness of their early days. This album was remastered for this release to celebrate Fuse finally getting a wider release. Fans of dreampop, goth and alternative music will extremely interested in this important release.

Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community is a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45rpm format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. Review: Best Records has got some superb reissues dropping right now, just in time for summer, and Mike Francis's brilliantly Balearic soul cut from 1982 is next up. This effortlessly heartwarming vocal track was produced by Paul and Peter Micioni and emerged from the Italo Disco scene in Italy on the heels of a former big hit with the Metropole group. However, on this project, he worked under a new stage name but didn't lose any of his creative edge. 'Love Has Found You' is impossibly laidback and lovely with its carefree melodies and 'Nighttime Lady' is a mid-tempo slow burner with funky low ends and a nice playful vocal full of love.

The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Review: CMT hits its tenth release and serves up a super sweet 7" featuring a fascinating fusion of sounds from Ryusenkei. The A-side here, 'Spring Rain' is a mix of jazz funk, city pop, disco and plenty more, with lush instrumentals and her own delicate vocals sung in Japanese, though she appears to sing the title in English. On the flip is 'Tokyo Sniper' which is a more slow and sentiment soul sound with neat keys and riffs, lush arps and plenty of rich pianos that frame the vocals - which pair off Ryusenkei with a male response - perfectly.

Review: Under the familiar Leo Zero alias, Leo Esltob has crafted countless killer re-edits over the last few decades - though only a limited number have ever been released. Hence the Edit Archive series of 12" EPs, which here reaches volume two. As you'd expect for a man of his experience and expertise, there's much to admire, from the sing-along powder-rock brilliance of 'Dreams' (a tasteful, extended re-work of one of the most famous and celebrated songs of the 1970s) and the re-vitalised Balearic brilliance of 'Taboo' (yep, it's an excellent Sade re-rub), to the loose-limbed-but-locked-in house-not-house headiness of 'Feel The Pain', with its echoing vocal snippets, metronomic cowbells and bubbly synth sounds.

Review: Machine originally dropped this mini-disco classic back in 1979 as the title cut to their album of that year, and now it's offered up again with a couple of remixes that rework the original. That original is the star of the show still here with the 1979 version still standing out. Next to that are a poising Timmy Regisford mix and acapella reprise as well as a Moplen remix and dub. This studio disco group was first formed by August Darnell who had previously been part of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and then in the 1980s went on to be part of Kid Creole And The Coconuts.

Review: German artist Purple Disco Machine is a studio wizard and something of a throwback - he manages to make tunes that are rich in musicality as well as having plenty of focus on the dancefloor. Review: On this fresh disco 7", DJ Koco (aka. Shimokita) and DJ Kawasaki have re-edited and cut Nayutah's hit songs 'Keep It Up' and 'Stand Up' into an enduring pair of bright disco edits. Both Nayutah's original tracks really wanted us to keep it supine; Koco and Kawasaki act as commanders of this charge, not shying away from the ostensible stringy glitz of the original song. Review: Ritual Release, the California-based imprint established by Woolfy vs Projections, have long kept tight-lipped about the identities of synth boogie revivalists Guruku. We have no idea (we suspect it's them, but could be wrong), but we do know that the act's latest EP is superb. There are two original tracks on offer, both featuring vocalist Rojai: the Dam Funk-meets-Dayton brilliance of 'Mesmerized' and the dreamier, sunnier, 80s synth-soul-inspired excellence of 'What It Takes'. Both come accompanied by tasty remixes. Giovanni Damico re-imagines 'Mesmerized' as a thickset electrofunk-goes-jazz-funk workout, while Daniel T stretches out and lightly dubs out the same song in a nu-disco style. Rayko and Woolfy vs Projections join forces on a dubby and club-friendly nu-disco revision of 'What It Takes', before we treated to a dancefloor dubs style 'Bonus Beats' mix.

Review: Molchat Doma are one of the global music phenomenons of our time. The Belarusian trio first started causing a small stir among the kind of circles that actively hunt out Belarusian synth bands. That grew into widespread rumblings throughout the underground, driven by online shares as much as play on independent radio stations. Skip forward again, and the outfit can claim true viral sensation status, having conquered tastemakers and social networks across the world. Monument is their third album, and was largely written during Covid-19 quarantine in their hometown, Minsk. Again, it's an evolutionary thing. Post-punk vies for your attention next to synth pop, cold wave, New Wave and romantic electronica. Calling to mind, at various points, The Cure, Depeche Mode and Joy Division, among others, nevertheless those comparisons don't feel fair - the work here is fresher feeling and, ultimately, removed from the North Atlantic hegemony, so it should be analysed in that context.

Review: There is a very loveable retro soul feel to this new package of trad house sounds from Steal Vybe & Lamone. It takes the form of a The Heatwave classic that has been all remade and flipped into a slightly more contemporary cut but one that will still make a big mark on the old school crew. The instrumental is a real gem but it's the soaring vocals and funky baselines of the original that are sure to get plenty of hammer under the sun this summer, especially the irresistible boogie mix. Drop this one and it is sure to get immediate and big reactions.
