Common Blue (3:53)
Underneath (4:30)
Review: Sometimes reunions can be awkward. A load of people who lost touch trying to ignore the nagging 'whys' and 'what ifs' of their now-fractured shared histories, while attempting to 'catch up' on what's been going on since they fell out of regular contact ages ago. Thankfully, Warpaint's return to the release schedule after a two year hiatus, and their return to Rough Trade, the label they started out on, only feels right. Common Blue is a two-sided single that also serves as a reminder of why we fell for the band in the first place, 20 years ago (if that doesn't make you feel old, more references are available). The title track is best described as an earthy-groover, melodies effortlessly flowing over hushed vocals, arrangement wrapped around a strolling rhythm. In comparison, 'Underneath' takes the tempo down, beautiful sung harmonies and gentile guitar chords creating the sonic equivalent to a summer afternoon by the lake.

Review: Slingin' slangin guitars, skittering drums and synths from BRIT School graduates Black Midi deliver a sound that's semi-ironic with all matter of punk leanings. With references abound to New York's heyday of experimental new wave and art rock, this two-track 12" for Rough Trade sees the four-piece edge that bit closer to their anticipated debut album called Schlagenheim. Due for a release this June, most of Schlagenheim was said to have been laid down in five days with producer Dan Carey (Bat for Lashes, Bloc Party) and these two tracks go to some length in introducing the band's raw talent, their meteoric rise and vision of a gone but not forgotten CBGBs.

Review: The best thing since the Klaxons or Bloc Party have arrived. black midi! The student art rock band are bringing a new youthful energy and slight of malice back to the arena of post-indie inspired alternative guitar and synth music. They make this overtly known from the start with the supercharged opener that is "953", introducing an album that is said to have laid down eight of the record's nine tracks in just five days. Drums are fast and skittering, rhythms are dancey and guitars keep it Madchester jangley. "Speedway" (is that a wry Prodigy reference?) is among the album's highlights alongside the punk-funky "bmbmbm" and the short but trippy "Years Ago". With a 100 per cent backing by UK music institution Rough Trade: meet this generation's newest sensation.

Review: Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek and Jesu's Justin Broadrick have been long-term admirers of each other's work, and despite their having made their name in markedly different endeavours - Kozelek dealing out spectral frailty in Red House Painters and Broadrick shattering boundaries in avant-metal titans Godflesh - they have common ground in their dealings with human frailty. These things are manifest on this collaborative work, in which Broadrick's radiant soundscapes back up Kozelek at his most emotionally engaging. With guest appearances by members of Low, Will Oldham and Rachel Goswell, the epic scope of this work only throws the rawness of the subject matter into sharper relief, creating a pinnacle for both these maverick artists alike.

Review: The songwriting of Icelandic maverick Emiliana Torrini has found many counterpoints to help render its stark beauty in compelling new contexts, yet it may just be that this live album is the most diverting one yet. Opening up new vistas that may not have been originally suggested, the Belgian orchestra The Colorist offer up arrangements that blend richly textured strings and woodwinds one minute, and are happy to jump off the deep end of abstraction the next, all the while using her voice as the starting point, its emotional intensity undimmed and its delicate tones delicately augmented. A most understated tour de force.

Review: Perhaps unexpectedly for some given they're a band comprising a furious and profane man and another drinking lager whist staring at his laptop, Sleaford Mods have proved themselves on outfit ready to take on the world. Moreover, 'English Tapas', their fourth record to date, proves that they're only growing in stature and vitality with each record, but proving themselves a band who transcend genres as effortlessly as they summon up a particularly timely and unique brand of fierce invective. Place 'em on a lineage involving John Cooper Clarke, The Fall and The Streets if you like, but 'English Tapas' is very much of the now and possessed of a gritty intensity that is all this duo's own.

Review: This Californian foursome have always been possessed of a rare creative alchemy, their free-flowing style often jam-based yet buoyed by their languid chemistry. 'Heads Up' is a notable step up from their self-titled debut of two years ago, arriving at a plateau of poignant emotion and invigorating songcraft that is as rich in groove and hooks as moods or atmospheres, with ditties like 'New Song' being an example of the former even whilst 'The Stall' summons the Cure-esque spectres of their inception. Always a charismatic outfit, Warpaint have never sounded more confident or powerful, dealing out psychic shockwaves and sepulchral charm with ease.

Review: Having displayed a somewhat wayward and scattershot approach of late, 'Human Performance' is where Parquet Courts go right back to hitting the bullseye in extremis, using their infectious songcraft and rough-hewn charm on this collection of skewed and anthemic ditties to deliver a cocktail of equal parts mischief and malice, pop melody and DIY punk. Wry lyrical insights, incisive guitar hooks and omnipresent joie-de-vivre coalesce to provide further evidence that this Brooklyn outfit - beyond being a Pavement for millennials - are currently about as close as one can get to a new generation of indie-rock royalty.

Review: A Welsh language album with a couple of verses in Zulu and an English title. If one thing was already clear about the enigmatic Gruff Rhys it's that he doesn't play strictly by numbers, making "Pang!" a logical addition to this oeuvre. If, of course, you're familiar with his oeuvre. Opening with its titular track, the artist immediately makes the few remaining newcomers to his work aware of his deft skills. Complex guitar instrumentation, soft, padding, exotic drum arrangements and - for most people - foreign lyrics. We're immediately transported to faraway climes, and it's here we stay. Playful percussion and looped six strings on "Niwl O Anwiredd". The celebratory "Ara Deg (Ddaw'r Awen)", which recalls sub-Saharan crossover pop. The surreal atmosphere of "Digidigol" - where marching band meets opera in a haze of lilting chords. Put simply, it might be Rhys' most explorative yet, and that's saying something.

Review: 'What A Waster' was the first single from The Libertines's self titled album back in 2002. It was a firm favourite with fans even though it had little airplay because of all the naughty words in it. There is a renewed interest in Pete Doherty and co of late, with people realising once again their song craft and catchy hooks should always be admired even if they were a rather chaotic outfit. This limited edition 7" repress is backed with the equally short but potent 'I Get Along.' Both tunes are British indie at their finest.

Dark Blue (6:32)
BRJ (7:43)
Review: London-based eight piece band, Caroline, have been gradually garnering a reputation for quietly confident, and deceptively commanding work since then. Now having racked up plenty of hours on stage, on the road and in the studio, the trio are ready to deliver their highly-anticipated debut single, and it hasn't disappointed anybody in this office. 'Dark Blue' is certainly one for the more patient out there. Taking almost two-and-a-half minutes to introduce its gliding, woozy harmony before any lyrics are heard, it's a masterclass in gradual build and switching up the intensity of instrumental arrangements. Folky, meditative fare, it nods to the jazzier end of bands like His Name Is Alive. Flip the script to find 'BRJ', which explores the hypnotic potential of simple refrains, taking listeners close to experimental drone work, here with live strings and bass doing the lulling.

John L (5:15)
Despair (3:34)
Review: RECOMMENDED
'John L' isn't the most comforting single you will have heard recently, but it may be one of the most rewarding. Black Midi opening their latest with frantic drum rolls and tense melodic string loops, it conjures memories of movie scores like Psycho and Requiem For A Dream, seemingly threatening to explode into a new metal assault. That doesn't quite happen, but the hallucinatory cacophony - not a million miles from The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - leaves nobody behind. Or, more accurately, leaves no prisoners.

The English experimental rockers strike again, and with aplomb, as the track ploughs forward on its uncompromising, frenetic and anxious course, marking this out as arguably their most musically accomplished (certainly most musically extravagant) song yet. A huge contrast to the suitably redemptive, strangely empowering acoustic guitar and soulful vocal duet, 'Despair'. The word 'original' does not do this lot nearly enough justice.

Review: Britain's finest working class poets return with a tune named after the 1970s-80s extraterrestrial sitcom starring Robin Williams and Pam Dawber, which frontman Jason Williamson has himself described as "the sound of the central heating and the dying smells of Sunday dinner in a house on an estate in 1982". Fittingly the same year said TV show was cancelled.

It's not hard to hear what he means, providing your mind works that way. A sweeping, hypnotic, mechanical hook, the heavy atmosphere that seems to hang in the air long after the very UK, very deprecating rhymes end. Even Billy Nomates' beautiful, soulful vocals can't save it from drowning in delightful scuzz. Backed with the smoky breaks instrumental 'Little Bits', it bodes well for a new album in January, Spare Ribs, which is apparently based on the idea that elites place no value in the lives of everyday people. How apt.
