Overcome/Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)

Overcome (9:00)
Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:22)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Review: Put simply - this is yet another 2 track dancefloor bomb. As usual when Eric Prydz makes music under his Cirez D guise, the results are truly explosive. The last 3 Mouseville releases have seen the label grow into one of the most sought after dance imprints on the planet. The secret of its success is in its crossover appeal, with yet again everyone from Pete Tong and Fergie to Carl Cox and John Digweed caning the record. The tracks themselves are massive with the A side being the harder of the 2 with its growling synth bass and massive edits and supremely clever arrangement whilst the flip is more clubby with its catchy hookline and uplifting feel.

Review: Time passes by so quickly but in case of Paul Kalkbrenner the ravages of time are actually pretty exciting. The tracks on "Keule" are not as snappy as in his younger raver years, but they do frizzle and sizzle and kick you right in the face. Paul Kalkbrenner isn't an assembly line producer who releases new records all the time. He travels and plays a lot, meets people, meets styles, works on his stuff for months and then surprises us with a new sound, that still bears the typical Kalkbrenner characteristics.

Review: "Mouth to Mouth" struts in confidently, like a freshly-oiled sex robot. The murmurs of something wicked are on the horizon, but we're too busy dancing to that gorgeous nagging bassline. Things are moving along just fine until that distant hum rises to a fevered pitch and a massive buzz saw blade takes the track's head cleans off, spraying its black oil across the walls.

Knockout (John Dahlback at Huggeland 2006 remix)
Knockout (Sebastien Leger remix)
Review: Massive, massive, massive record. That's the only way to describe this next masterpiece instalment from Eric Prydz's Mouseville imprint. Eric has built this label into one of the biggest brands in the marketplace and all the releases have received regular plays from all of the world's top DJ's. The A side of this monster is a new track from Eric himself under his usual Cirez D guise. As usual the production is faultless and this club hit just builds from the start with its massive drums, synth edits and driving bass before building to a massive break and killer drop. On the flip there are two killer remixes of Cirez D - "Knockout" which was Mouseville number 2. The first bomb mix is from John Dahlback who needs no introduction and takes the original elements and uses them superbly with great edits. To finish the package there is a killer rework from Sebastian Leger who strips down the groove superbly and adds his own unique flavour. What an awesome record!!!

In The Trees (original 1996 mix)
Review: In 2007 Juno Records is ten years old, and we've decided to celebrate by releasing 10 singles throughout the year. Each one is a classic dance track featuring new remixes from the some of the most exciting and established names in the business, including Julien Jabre, Spirit Catcher, Dimitri from Paris, Lindstrom, Troy Pierce, Cobblestone Jazz and many more. These releases will initially only be available from www.juno.co.uk and www.junodownload.com. To launch the series we have pulled out all the stops with the re-release of the timeless "In The Trees" by Faze Action, featuring remixes from the legendary Carl Craig and Jerome Sydenham & Tiger Stripes, as well as the brilliant 1996 original mix. A genuinely huge release, this could be the first of 10 future classics! ***Stop press 19/12/07: the Carl Craig mix has been voted #3 in residentadvisor.net's "Top 5 Remixes Of 2007".

Review: If you like Trentemoller then his brilliant remix for Djuma Soundsystem will make you feel like you died and went to heaven! His mix has that summery Ibiza sound stamped all over it, from a breezy guitar riff to warm synths, tumbling bassline and the odd surprise, as the beats change into gentle breakbeats then back into the 4/4s. Playhouse darlings My My also get into the act here with a deeper and more hypnotic reduced house version that does some Crazy laptop shit to the drums, for those who like their beats clicky and freaky.

Lockdown Party (Sprinkles Crossfaderama)
Review: Canadian producer The Mole, or Colin de la Plante to friends, has been in fine production fettle so far this year, gracing labels as varied as Red Motorbike, Slices Of Life and his own Maybe Tomorrow operation with his distinct brand of tongue in cheek mutant house. History Of Dates marks the long overdue Perlon debut for The Mole and it's celebrated in style as Zip's venerated label call in DJ Sprinkles on remix duties! The title track and "Lockdown Party" line up on the A Side with the latter track a particularly cheeky production, as playground chants sit deep beneath an insouciant house groove. It's this track that Sprinkles remixes, implementing some subtle production additions such as handclaps and playful filtration on the vocal samples which lend the track a different energy as Thaemlitz deftly builds up a killer contemporary disco groove.

Review: Dice Corleone aka Loco Dice with the latest gem from the Minus stable. "Seeing Through Shadows" is a pulsing minimal techno masterpiece, with bubbling keys, a heavy kick, deep techno bass, shuffling techy beats, and great surface noise effects. On the reverse, "Backroom Melody" sounds like a continuation of the A-side cut, with sparse beats, more surface noise, percolating keys, and another rich bassline, but all served up in a more sparse state.

Westway
Review: Autoreply do the record buying public a favour and give Baby Ford's Tin Of Worms 12" another repress, this time on yellow wax. Baby Ford has been making electronic music since the late 1980s and is regarded by most as one of the key players in the nascent UK acid house scene. His entry into the Autoreply stable is a classy, versatile two tracker. The title track showcases crisp, tight linear drum programming - with ribcage shaking sub bass and supernatural synths which undulate over its eight minute cycle, displaying the original principles of minimal techno alongside forward thinking sound design. On the flip you'll find "Westway", originally recorded on Ford's now defunct hardware set up and mastered from DAT. This track conjours images of smoky late night jazz clubs with its smooth piano chords and strings that seem to float in an out of the mix- set starter, nightclub techno lesson, afterparty showpiece; the choice is yours...

Review: Ever a tease with their releases, Italojohnson makes his first appearance in a year with this three tracker, as ever appearing on their own self-titled imprint. There is always a pleasing consistency to the Italojohnson sound, where neatly shaped drum machine pressure meets with playful synth tones to make for some forthright party-starting material. On this occasion, "Track 1" brings the light and airy vibes with swooning strings sitting comfortably over a steady house groove, while "Track 2" delves into a more edgy construction complete with nasty bass and distorted vocal snippets. "Track 3" edges into more electro-inspired territory with its cheeky synth lines and wobbly low end trickery, but it's no less built for the floor.

Review: Long awaited 12" from Mr Oizo, featuring the previously unreleased track 'Nazis'. Rumours about this record have been spreading over the internet and myspace. The unreleased track 'Nazi' was originally intended to be part of Oizo's 'Moustache' album - it has now been rejigged with a more DJ-friendly mix and structure. Super hot remixers Justice bring their own vision of this track with a remix of pure energy. This 12" is completed by a harder rework of one of the standout tracks from the album, 'Half A Scissor', which now becomes 'Half An Edit'. A 12" of pure madness, abstract funk and techno sounds. Already being hailed as a classic.

The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton appears this time on Enzo Siragusa's Fuse London imprint with these slices of rolling, Latin-infused tech-house for the beach party. This is the kind of stuff that lovers of Mindshake and Rawthentic will be all over. First up "Mind Blank" brings the tough yet sultry attitude that you could imagine playing peak time at Amnesia. "Works On Sunday" takes the tempo down a notch or two for something more suited to the afterhours, but just as sexy. There's also a remix of this on the flip by none other than label boss Siragusa with Seb Zito keeping the afterhours vibe intact but with a druggier, minimal take on things.

Review: The mystery of the Botanic Minds Sunset Series continues to unfold with another bout of surreal and sensual club tracks that balance tweaked minimalism with a warm and hazy atmosphere. "Track001A" is packed with intricate rhythmic interplay, but it's the fluttering guitar licks and displaced vocals that give the piece its unique vibe. "Track002A" is a remix credited to Eastenderz regular Lizz, and it's a particularly spellbinding jam shaped out with lingering chords and a wistful mood. "Track001B" hunkers down around a low, throbbing bassline, but there's some sweet keys hovering up top to keep things from getting too dark. Barut is on hand with a remix for "Track002B", where trancey undercurrents meet with expansive piano and ethereal ambient swells, all strapped to a sturdy minimal house groove.

Flashbacks From The M1 (with Roland King - The Ferox Treatment)
Review: After the warm reception of his Baseline 88-89 release, Huckaby continues to develop his own S Y N T H label with another EP of solid, dubby house music. "Sandcastle" is positively minimal in its construction, with a clean groove decorated only with occasional spurts of delayed atmospherics and a subby bassline, begging to be slid under something else in a similar restrained groove. "Flashbacks From The M1" is equally functional, although the moody chord that comes scrabbling through the core of the track lightens the mood somewhat. Either way, these are tracks designed to slowly bleed into their counterparts, albeit without the dryness that comes with brazenly marketed 'DJ tools'.

Who's Afraid Of Detroit?
Review: Forget Peter, Bjorn and John. This is the whistling tune of the summer. This is Claude VonStroke's long awaited follow-up to last summer's smash "Deep Throat". Claude VonStroke is positioned for an explosion this year, his debut album received rave reviews in UK press (4/5 in Mixmag/DJ/IDJ plus features), he recently recorded a live hot mix and interview on Pete Tong's Radio 1 show (went out July 14th), he has tracks on 4 Fabric compilations, album tracks have been remixed by the likes of Sebastien Leger, DJ Sneak etc. A side "The Whistler" is Detroit booty meets Jiminy Cricket; with a memorable hook that sticks to your shoes long after you've left the club. It has already generated complete mania at the biggest parties in San Francisco and now has big international support from the UK crowd like Damian Lazarus and Nic Fanciulli. The B side is just as deadly, but deep and sultry, like an old Carl Craig track re-worked and updated for 2006. "Who's Afraid of Detroit" has the makings of a deep classic anthem and is being dropped by everyone from Paul Woolford to Ben Watt. It is an homage to Claude's hometown Detroit, the city that inspired his music career.

Lady Science (Tek mix) (5:52)
Review: As Soul Capsule, Baby Ford and Thomas Melchior made some of minimal techno's most accomplished records. It has been many years since they stopped turning out new material - sadly - but their archive tracks are still in hot demand and undeniably relevant. While 1999's 'Lady Science' might be their most famous offering, this EP from 2001 on Aspect Music is no less vital and it will currently cost you well over L250 on second-hand markets. It is Ford's Trelik label who reissues it here in all its glory: the entirety of the a-side is taken up with 'Law Of Grace,' a delightfully deep and breezy minimal dub house roller with pensive chords draped over the frictionless drums. 'Meltdown' has a more experimental feel with brushed metal drums beneath a wordless vocal musing. The cult 'Lady Science' (Tek Mix) is also inched with the whole package being remastered by D&M to make this one utterly essential.

Panik Attack (Guido Schneider Second Attack remix)
Review: Step forward Dubfire (aka Ali Shirazinia from Grammy winning DJ and production duo Deep Dish) who's already hit top form this summer
with some tasty releases on Desolat, Funkwelle.net and whose thumping 'Emissions' features on the Minus compilation 'EXPANSION
Contraction'. The beauty of this rework is that it doesn't stray far from the original vibe. Dubfire pays the track the full respect it deserves,
adding contemporary beats, bass and hat patterns, subliminal efx and tweaks that perfectly compliment the EQ sweeps and machine gun
snare rolls of the original.
Panikattack (originally released on Plus 8 in 1996 as the B side to Sickness) gets a more radical overhaul with Guido Schneider turning in
a typically pragmatic version. By excavating and enhancing the gritty funk that lies buried under the feverish textures of the original, he
discovers a totally new dimension. Combining the plastik elements with his own trademark swing and razor sharp percussion programming,
Schneider coaxes the track out of the shadows for some serious peak time action as the bassline bounds forward relentlessly occasionally
enveloped by stuttering delays, to negotiate its way through the dubbed out breakdown and on to the end.

Immunity, his fourth solo album (he's recorded two others, one with Brian Eno and another with King Creosote), doesn't disappoint. Rooted in shuffling, forthright and occasionally off-kilter rhythms, it melds hazy, late night atmospherics and subtle melodies with intense, droning chords, woozy electronics and all manner of inventive noises. It's a blend that repeatedly pays dividends, from the mournful pianos and jumpy rhythms of "Breathe This Air', to the crystalline, soundscape ambience of "Abandon Window", and glitchy wonkiness of "Form By Firelight".

Review: Over the course of the past two years, Marc Houle's music has quickly elevated his studio prose into desired analog soaked treasures of the dancefloor. Developing fans from vinyl to the club, the new double pack outing showcases new developments in his already minimal pop genius that has been tested on the road over the past few months. From the manic title track onward his sound continues to develop from a rich bed of electro pop and minimal techno, with gems that stay in the groove, or contort themselves by design.

Review: Hailed by James Holden as one of the best producers of the last 5 years, Petter returns to the Border Community camp with another essential release. Keeping in uniform with his last release on Border Community, Petter provides another diverse collection of very cool tracks. The main track "Some Polyphony" finds its home on the dancefloor and in every major DJs box. The other side is a blend of jacking rhythms, quirky sounds and lush pads. Border Community just goes from strength to strength, with a worldwide fan base that is ever increasing.

The Man Machine
Review: 'The Man-Machine' is closer to the sound and style that would define early new wave electro-pop. Less minimalistic in its arrangements and more complex and danceable in its underlying rhythms. Like its predecessor, 'Trans-Europe Express', there is the feel of a divided concept album, with some songs devoted to science fiction-esque links between humans and technology, often with electronically processed vocals ("The Robots," "Spacelab," and the title track); others take the glamour of urbanization as their subject ("Neon Lights" and "Metropolis"). Plus, there's "The Model," a character sketch that falls under the latter category but takes a more cynical view of the title character's glamorous lifestyle. More pop-oriented than any of their previous work, the sound of 'The Man-Machine' in particular among Kraftwerk's oeuvre had a tremendous impact on the cold, robotic synth pop of artists like Gary Numan, as well as Britain's later new-romantic movement.

Driven To Distraction (7:52)

Channelled (vinyl Only) (7:43)
Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton is a long time friend of the FUSE London family, having previously contributed to a number of releases. Driven To Distraction, though, is his first FUSE outing since 2015. Interestingly, there's quite a bit of surprising variety amongst the three tracks; compare, for example, the shuffling tech-house grooves and flamenco guitars of B-side "Channelled", with the title track's bouncy, deep house/acid house fusion. "Telegram", where wilder TB-303 acid lines and dubbed-out riffs ride an undulating, late night groove, is also rather nifty. In other words, it's a solid EP containing tracks tailor-made for different dancefloor situations.
