Review: Detroit house hero Kyle Hall returns with his biggest project in some time in the form of Transmissions, a new double album on his own well-regarded Forget The Clock. All six tracks have enigmatic, functional titles and the music is as idiosyncratic as ever. Each one veers more towards techno than is Hall's usual style, with pulsating synth lines and tight, dusty drum tracks making for stripped-to-the-bones grooves. Later on, things grow ever more abstract with twisted acid lines screwing their way through the increasingly ragged and roughshod drums. These are perfectly imperfect jams from a master of the form.

Review: UK duo CamelPhat have gone from being popular underground DJs to globally recognised top-tier house stars. They have had several charting tunes and a Grammy nomination and now they come through with a long-awaited album, Spiritual Milk. It is a long one at 16 tracks but it is a great opportunity for the pair to show their breath, and they do that with aplomb. These are well-written songs that show evolution from their early hits like 'Cola' and prove the Pacha Ibiza residents are able to do it all from Afro to melodic, vocal to deep house. Expect to hear it everywhere throughout 2024.

Review: California's Joe Babylon has been steering his own Roundabout Sounds through some lovely deep house waters over the last few years. Now the producer makes a big statement with his own debut album. He is something of a veteran having co-founded Plug Research back in 1994 and hosted underground events in Los Angeles during the mid '90s. Following on from outings alongside the likes of Rick Wilhite and Rondenion he now brings his own dusty, carefully disheveled house sounds to the fore. Review: It has been some years now since Nail came back from the wilderness after one of his early EPs was re-released by Fear of Flying. Since then he has turned out plenty of new material as well as digging deep into his vast and vital vaults to serve up the sort of lo-fi but kicking house sounds that made him and his Nottingham crew such a driving force back in the 90s. And that's what we get here on For Those That Knoe - no fewer than eight masterfully stripped-back cuts of deep house. Review: For those who dig what was once called progressive house, the Balance series from Australian label EQ has always been a "must check". Most contributors tend to push the boat out, resulting in deeply melodic and otherworldly sets that blur the boundaries between true mix and full-on production. That's certainly the case here, as Spanish DJ/producer (and part-time TV sound designer) Henry Saiz carefully crafts two discs of prog-not-prog blissfulness. Saiz's sound is based on the fusion of IDM electronica and shuffling, early morning house, and that's the overriding theme here - giving the mix an enjoyably fluid sound and style.

Of their many achievements, on their Amphia label as much as elsewhere, this album on Sushitech stands as one of their finest moments. As with all the best Romanian minimal, it's also still hotly in demand, making it a welcome addition to Sushitech's 15th anniversary pressing marathon. Review: After four appearances on Lithuania's Greyscale, Ajnkana delivers his first long player Integers Equations, with more than an hour of "tangibly eerie, atmospheric chords", ambience but not ambient-edged beats and dubby effects either destined for play on deeper dancefloors or comedown soundtracking post-party living room sessions. The titles may be blank as anything, all binary and consisting of 1s and 0s in slightly different orders, but the instrumental, slowly-enveloping tracks have plenty of personality. Fans of Sahko, Chain Reaction and Ilian Tape's more esoteric offerings will love it.

Review: With a sound perfectly crafted for the emotive pop tones of Kompakt, Kolsch delivers the 1977 long player in a cascade of effervescent melody rendered through bold production. There are light, fluffy moments such as the hands-aloft opener "Oma" and the lamenting closer "Felix", while elsewhere you can find the German producer indulging a love of dub techno with the crafty delays of "Basshund". It's not all soft and sweet though, as the electro-house grind of "Eiswinter" attests as it works up a sweaty main room fervour. Likewise "Bappedeckel" has a stadium-sized approach to synths and track dynamics aimed squarely at getting huge crowds moving in unison.

Review: The first compilation on Koze's Pampa label is a lovingly curated affair. It starts with the left field house of Herbert's take on Lianne La Havas and Ada's r&b-infused "You & Me", as well as DJ Koze's own hymnal take on Roman Flugel's "9 Years". Other Pampa regulars like Axel Boman are well represented and he provides the ultra-mellow "In The Dust of This Planet". Equally though, Koze also provides a platform for newcomers to the fold. There's the utterly bizarre, glitch-hop of Nasrawi and Funskstorung's contributions, and at the other end of the spectrum, wide-eyed deep house from Mount Kimbie and Jamie xx & Kosi Kos' pumping indie-dance "Come We Go".

He now returns with a new collection of precision tool tracks hat have been made by sampling his own sounds from his own DAT tape archive from the 90s. Review: After a run of reissues and a boundary-blurring fusion of classical music and electronica (January 2021's Angel's Flight), Norwegian ambient veteran Geir Jennsen AKA Biosphere has gone back to basics on Shortwave Memories. Review: Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard created a landmark of ambient music when they released 76:14 back in the 90s. Review: London-based label For Those That Knoe returns with a terrific release by underrated Slovenian producer Vid Vai. He's been slowly yet steadily honing his craft over the last 12 years with releases on respected labels such as Assemble Music, Tvir, Gilesku and Oskar Offermann's White to name but a few. Laminar Flow also happens to be his first full-length, taking in a wide variety of moods and grooves along the way. From the evocative and acid-laced flow of 'Incubation Theory', the sci-fi electro of 'Oort Cloud' to the sublime ambient offering 'Dusk By The Bay' and the saucer-eyed sunrise breaks of 'Shifting Sands' - the result is a timeless piece of liquid-smooth sonic art.

And they very much foment their own unique musical language on Ancient Skies, an album that blends ambient, drone and space music into richly layered soundscapes that are constantly on the move. Each piece is meticulously crafted and suspense you up amongst the clouds, hazing on at the smeared pads and swirling solar winds that prop you up. It's a record that would work as well in the depths of winter as a bright spring day such is the cathartic effect of the sounds. Review: Yoni is the rather accomplished pair of Thomas Melchior and Tim Hutton and they roasted this cult classic album of what was then called intelligent dance music back in 1994. It was a CD-only release back then but now gets a proper pressing across three slabs of wax It is much more percussive, raw and textural than anything you would associate the smooth minimalist Melchior these days but it perfectly fits in with the current trend for mixing up several sound worlds at once. There are breaks, cosmic electro, mad techno and even hints of house along the course of the eight expertly designed tracks.

Review: After being commissioned to produce several 'interlocking' ambient pieces for an art gallery piece in LA, Brian Foote and Sage Caswell decided to take the concept of 'audience crossfading' to the next level, creating an entire ambient album using a particular sonic technique. Over five long pieces from 'Waterwheel' to 'Smiley', their aim was to evoke the feeling of bodies moving in thoroughfares. The tracks are long-exposed movements captured in ambient space, blending rhythms and soundscapes for chillout rooms that exist only in memory now.

It's a beautiful mix of exploratory soundscapes, organic percussion and lush melody that unfolds in charming and captivating ways. Found sounds add more real world details to these tracks which range from lazy downbeat jaunts on a wide open savanna to more dynamic deep house trips through the cosmos. Worldly percussion, exotic melodies and unique instruments are all deployed to mark for multi-layered tracks that work equally on brain and body. It makes for a triumph of a record that is experimental yet aborsbing and packed with great detail.

Review: Greyscale use the end of 2022 to look back at what they have achieved so far. And that's a lot as this third volume of their already much-loved Mood Series proves once more. This one focuses on releases #41 to #60 and features the label owner grad_u making the selections. Top ones they are too, with Conor OG's deliciously deep 'Disembarking' setting a nice dub mood before there are excursions into frosty minimalism from Francisco Aguado, sub-aquatic bass bliss from Stoll hypnotic horizontal rhythms from BT Gate X-138, amongst many more standouts. 2022 was a fine year, then, and we're already looking forward to what 2023 has in store for us.

It is a record that swings from the dark and mysterious to the more upbeat and playful as it explores a range of techno styles. The material originates from the pair's live set so has a real dynamism to it as well as it moves through ever-evolving psychedelic soundscapes. Vocals, synth lines, and guitars have all been laid down on tape and then resampled and deconstructed to "create an analog patchwork which floats over the hard-hitting beats and fat analog synths and bass lines." Review: Tresor is celebrating 30 years in the game with a series of special reissue projects. This one really goes way back to almost the start, when Juan Atkins was already defining the early techno sound. For this one he linked up with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann in 1992 for a second iteration of the 3 Men in Berlin project. The monumental results join the dots between Detroit and Berlin across a collection of timeless cuts that meld bassline funk, hypnotic minimalism and soulful machine sounds into propulsive, emotive dance floor joy. The unbridled energy and cosmic elegance of 'Jazz Is The Teacher' might just be the highlight.

Review: Swiss label Drumpoet has been one of those super reliable outlets that serves up good quality deep house. It has now been doing so for 15 years and marks the occasion with a bumper triple vinyl collection featuring 13 cuts from all the label's finest associates. There is brilliantly left-of-centre minimal from Roman Flugel and Frank Weidermann to kick off, then melody-rich deep house from Bubble Wrap, and an absolute classic from the one and only Herbert who supplies 'Air.' Plenty more lushness comes from the likes of Fred Everything and Ripperton to make this a fine collection.

Even the mighty fabric compilations have rebranded and rethought, bringing the original legacy, FABRICLIVE included, to a respectful end at 200 outings. Strange, then, to think, that !K7's mighty offering to the world of "What should we listen to at the afters?" has arguably managed to become more relevant as the years have flown by.
There was a time when the series existed at the lighter end of club fare, with some examples barely even matching that description. These days, though, there's often a dance floor heaviness central to the selections, with Jessy Lanza's broken, bass-driven set a case in point. Pointless attempts to describe the music, and lazy track list namedropping aside, this is energy-packed, heads down, futurist stuff packed with infectious percussion.

Review: Subset makes a welcome return to Greyscale with his second full-length album after the success that was This Quiet Earth. The follow-up, Ambient Particles, is another widescreen work of great cinematic details that again showcase Sunset's studio skills. The track titles give an insight into his thinking behind the music with the likes of 'Sandstorm on Mars' swirl of textured pads over baron landscapes of undulating bass and 'Cocooned Under the Stars' feels adrift in the endless darkness of space with only distant twinkling pads for company. Elsewhere 'Chains In The Wind' is a spacious and dubby ambient techno trip and 'Ambient Particles' brings a little more movement with its rolling drums. A sophisticated and soothing album once more from Subset.

Review: If you're a fan of SND then this is the reissue you've been waiting on. Mark Fell and Mat Steel's infamous 1998 debut has been influential on countless artists over the years, and particularly difficult to get hold of until now. Remastered by the wonderful Mr.Becker over at D&M, this pressing is actually superior to the original thanks to less surface noise, a feature which had collectors obsessing over. Containing a whole extra thirty minutes of music, this is pretty downright essential for fans of Mark Fell's solo missives, true dub techno a-la Basic Channel, Hoodsian Detroit filth, and anything UK garage related. Using the most minimalistic of melody and percussion, these two managed to create funk out of thin air, where seductive grooves, pop and clicks blend with grace to form eleven cuts of sheer beauty. Fans of Acido, Sued and the whole Atelier/Laton clans, need this. Highly recommended.

Review: Having recently dabbled in the artist album format, Comeme turn to matters of a double pack nature with this fine collection of tracks presented under the banner Gasoline. Fans of the label will be pleased to see that Ana Helder contributes the title track, whilst Argentinean selectors Djs Pareja appear twice with one track a collaboration with fellow Comeme mainstay Alejandro Paz. It's also great to see the label introduce a few new names, with the self-styled GlasGoan Auntie Flo a perfect fit for Comeme given his previous output for Huntleys & Palmers, Permanent Vacation, Mule and Kompakt Extra. The presence of Mexican duo Zombies In Miami, Portuguese 'Bachelor House' advocates Voxels and Chileans Vaskular and Valesuchi suggests Comeme's A&R skills for uncovering new talent remains as keen as ever.
