NSD - "A Story Behind Everything" (12:59)
Review: Ukranian label Propaganda has made great strides since launching in early 2015. They've previously put out a quartet of quietly impressive 12" singles, and here unleash their most extensive release yet: a double-pack compilation of previously unreleased cuts from their current roster of artists. There's naturally much to admire, from the wobble bass, relentless beats and hushed Rich Medina vocals of Mateo Papachioli's "Journeyman", and bass-heavy, dub-flecked broken techno of Nastia's "Safari", to the bouncy beats and ghostly vocal samples of Yate's undeniably epic "Tooman". NSD's similarly lengthy closer "A Story Behind Everything", which reminded us a little of Don't DJ's recent album on Berceuse Heroique, is also rather fine.

Review: Montreal maven Priori's continued rush of beautifully rendered club magic manifests in a new album on the NAFF label he co-steers with Ex-Terrestrial. As you may well expect by now, his approach balances beauteous ambient passages full of advanced synthesis with delicate techno and rolling broken beat, imbued with a sense of warmth and playfulness but never at the expense of the music's emotional depth. Stand-out moments on Your Own Power include slowly unfurling downtempo bliss-out 'Shkrub' and the brooding, cerebral passages of 'The Village', but truthfully the whole album plays out in a cascade of immaculate production and heartwarming composition. The NAFF gear always flies out, so don't sleep on this one.

Review: San Fran's unstoppable and enduring tech house craftsman John Tejada is also super reliable. His sound is well established, but he always does enough with each new release to embellish it a little further. Returning now to his home label of Kompakt, he refines his palette to silky melodies, fuzzy pads and crisp beats that are superbly pleasing for both your ears and your heels. 'Sheltered' is a particularly classy cut of deft tech minimalism, 'Spectral Progressions' expires ambient broken beats with lush pad work and 'Panacea' picks up the pace in scintillant fashion. This might be his best work in years.

Review: WORKSHOP 32 has been a long time coming - not least as this is Kassem Mosse's first solo outing on Workshop since 2014. And what a way to return, presenting a full-length album that reflects the evolution of the artist while not denying any of the ideas and sounds and styles that first made us fall in love with him all those moons ago. A broad and varied celebration of off-centre electronic music that has as much right to be on the dancefloor as it does on a movie soundtrack. So what does that sound like? Well, in the case of 'Track 2', it's a skeletal toybox tech workout, while 'Track 6' takes us into deep and surrealist house music. Elsewhere, ''Track 7' explodes into a carnival of percussion and bleep, 'Track 4' offers lunging curveball fours, bassline seeming to bore holes in the very ground you're stomping on. Always pared back, but never truly minimal, it's one of 2023's earliest classics.

Review: Ben Hixon has steadily released house gem after house gem on his Dolfin imprint. The label in just a little over eight years has created quite a robust discography with no signs of letting up. The newest 'Work', almost goes without saying that it reminds of us classic Chi-Town tracks from the heyday. But as the track moves on, you quickly forget the comparison as those beautiful keys play and the atmosphere sets in. Both 'Work' and 'Movedat' feature vocals from Rami who is co-credited on this wax. 'Movedat' is a bit more a minimal house banger but still is full of soul. Both tracks are strong winners and are sure to get a big response from patrons of the dancefloor. This 7" is limited to only 200 copies so grab one quickly!

Erobique - "Warmer Bruder"

Review: Having initiated a return to action in fine style with Iron Curtis' debut album Soft Wide Waist Band, the Mirau label comes correct with this split release from Erobique and Alexander Polzin. "Warmer Bruder" signals a welcome return to the Hamburg imprint for Erobique, with the local lad having released on Mirau back in its early days and this new production is wonderful, all rich instrumental touches and glorious melodic flourishes that burst with a certain incandescence - a fine example of European deep house. To begin with, Polzin's "Fruchtchen" seems to exist in a darker realm, though it's gradually drawn towards the light in undeniably epic fashion.

We've been gifted scores of albums on Childhood Intelligence, Exalt Records and now Elusive Intelligence, with Voyage Of Light representing the latest transmission from an artist brimming with inspiration. Nye takes his cues from the likes of B12, Kirk Degiorgio and Stasis, crafting a classically-crafted strain of techno which suits headphones as much as dancefloors. Across nine tracks Nye weaves a spectrum of sci-fi tales with the textbook tools - warm, expressive synth lines and crisp, intricate drum machine patterns. If you dig that sound, you're going to love this album.

This guy is a true innovator and many are curious to hear what kind of journey into the deep and bizarre he can take us on. Starting out with the exotic bongo meditation of "Delir 1" and the breathtaking immersive ambience of "Delir 2" or the sinister and unsettling "Lumiere" things start to develop more movement later. Such as: on the deep hypnotic vibes of "Delir 4" or "Delir 6" which feature sombre string arrangements, emotive piano passages and some of the most expressive and restrained drums and percussion performances. It comes on on Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings and is another record of unity, flow and cohesion. It is a work, we are told, that draws on his own personal experiences and forms a life soundtrack to epitomise moments of both elation and hardship. Each track offers a world of soul to explore, with intricate percussion, rhythms and harmonies to get lost in and expertly designed snares and kicks all making it a lush sounding work.

Review: Much of the press leading up to the release of Barclay Crenshaw's third album under the Claude von Stroke moniker (the last, Bird Brain, dropped in 2009) has concentrated on his rediscovery of his little-known drum & bass roots, and his flirtation with Juke-influenced rhythms. While you can certainly here these influences - check the pared-down synth melodies and skittering 808 rhythms of "The Bridge" and the jungle revival of "Oakland Rope" - Urban Animal is about a lot more than that. Its' influences are many and varied - deep house, UK garage, crunk, P-funk, even organ-heavy funk (see "The Clapping Track") - giving it a rounded, "proper dance album" feel. It's also arguably Crenshaw's strongest set to date.

Since then he has turned out plenty of new material as well as digging deep into his vast and vital vaults to serve up the sort of lo-fi but kicking house sounds that made him and his Nottingham crew such a driving force back in the 90s. And that's what we get here on For Those That Knoe - no fewer than eight masterfully stripped-back cuts of deep house. Some are laced with dreamy melodies, some roll deep for days, some are raw and textured pumpers and some are jazzed-up bangers with charm to spare. Essential stuff.

Here they debut their first album, Universo, which plunges into the cosmos through a distinctly lo-fi dance lens. With a slew of vocal performances from Audrey Janssens to Vicky Who?, our favourite track has to be a tie between 'Vocal Ghost' and 'Liquid Fantasy'. Perhaps comparable to Bicep for cosmonauts.

Review: This double 12" compilation between Brazilian duo Stekke and producer and DJ Max Underson is a perfect marriage between the emotional aesthetic background of Underson's previous works and the precise floor-filling formula that Stekke has devised. The minimal composition is at the crossroads between deep, acid and tech house, with the wet basslines of 'The Messenger' being paired with ritualistic sub-bass lines culminating in house heaven. A real highlight on this release is side 4's 'Guidance', a smooth, grooving track that goes to show that house tracks don't always have to be cramped to the brim. The negative space used in these tracks, and the way it's used, is an art. Not to turn a blind eye to the two unique remixes on the compilation either, which take tracks to new heights thanks to the abstract re-imaginings by XDB and Melchior Productions Ltd. Universal Law is a schooling in the ways of minimal house, take notes.

Delano Smith's characteristic loops lock you in from the off on 'Big City Nights,' Norm himself pairs dub techno chords with suggestive techno stabs that keep you on edge and Brian Kage's 'Poly-Phonic Phonk' is heady, dreamy, richly melodic house bets listened to in a cosy back room at 4 am.

Review: Back in 2008, noted experimentalist Alva Noto began a sporadic series of albums that were far more focused on dancefloor-inspired rhythms than his usual eccentric and inspiring fare. Unieqav is the third and, we're told, final part of the series. The album is apparently meant to be a sonic representation of an underwater dive, a conceptual theme which manifests itself through the storied producer's use of deep and atmospheric chords, fluid and occasionally glistening electronics, and rhythms that evoke images of ever-deeper dives into the dark, cold depths. Rhytmically, there are nods to electro, IDM, dub techno and Autechre, though the mood remains laidback and intoxicated throughout.

Review: Monolink has been teasing his long-awaited new album Under Darkening Skies for a long time. Finally it is here and it ushers in a new chapter for the esteemed producer after two years of hard graft and plenty of "love and frustration" in the studio. It is an honest, vulnerable sound with syrupy synths and gentle drum grooves overlaid with folky acoustic guitars. The song writing is standout, too, with plenty of hummable top lines and memorable hooks hanging in the air over the pulsing rhythms. Many have tried to fuse electronic music with indie before now, but few have ever done it better than Steffen Linck.

Review: Berlin based producer Florin Gojnea aka G76 brings some fresh minimal sounds to this new double 12" on Nervmusic. Firstly, 'Too Much' has a catchy groove with syncopated grooves and clicking hits, while a well treated vocal up top adds a vital hook. There is real Detroit depth and machine soul and warmth to 'Elliot Waves', which could be a Rick Wade tune, and the epic 'The Divergence' really does hypnotise you over the course of its 12 odd minutes. Two further ten minute-plus tunes on 'Dress To Impress' and 'Bucket Model' prove that Gojnea is a master of economical yet efficient track design.

Review: The mysterious Seekers imprint is back with another round of dusty deep house in a sort of Dial meets Smallville aesthetic that we've become extremely fond of. That being said, Turning Night Into Day is the label's first LP and, in our opinion, their mindful, cerebral style of house music is perfectly suited to the more expansive album format. "Song 1" starts what quickly becomes a mesmerising collection of beats and musical tones wrapped up in a 4/4 framework for the club; this is the sort of gear that should be played loud on a big system, where the basslines often appear hidden unless churned out at destructive levels. More than a concept piece, this is the sort of music that appears shy and contained on a first listen but then suddenly hits you in the chest after amid the madness and confusion of a club floor.

Review: Minimal author Ion Ludwig is an expert at laying down superbly simmering, perfectly reduced techno tracks that are dusty yet dynamic, infectious and heady all at once. 15 years into his career he remains at the top of his game and this new album for Basel's Adam's Bite is another excellent one. It finds him push his own boundaries, calling variously on oboe samples, watery chords, jazz cymbals and plenty more to take you deep into a warren of darkly involving minimal grooves that are always stuffed with detail for the head while never forgetting the requirements of your heels.

Raxon (Ellum, Kompakt), Mathew Jonson (Wagon Repair, M_nus), Elax, Fedele (Ex-Agents Of Time) and Hannes Bieger all make appearances, lending gloomy and gargantuan extra credence to a time-honoured techno masterpiece.

Review: Berlin-based DJ, producer and live-act Oliver Koletzki steps up to his own label Still Vor Talent with a tenth studio album. Its title Trip to Sanity is a reference to the classic German children's story 'Tabaluga' about a little dragon and is said to reflect the artist's own journey over the last 18 years in the scene. It's one riddled with a child-like curiosity for new sounds and it comes with plenty of collaborations as has always been the way with Oliver. There are jazzy downbeat cuts, party-starting house anthems and plenty of deeper moments that showcase fine craft and real musical artistry.

Review: Parisian oddball house legend Ark teams up again with fellow local and Prospector head honcho Pit Spector to inaugurate Ark Records. A longtime in the making no doubt but worth the wait. Love Supreme LP as the title suggests is a tribute to the legendary John Coltrane and the pair have drafted a who's who of deep house and minimal to lend some hands and ears. Highlights include The Mole's "Molemix"; a sublime serving on reductionist bounce, Frankfurt genius Lo Soul who is as brilliant as ever on the sublime and hypnotic "It's All In There Mix" and Ark himself with his "Free Mix" which is as dusted down and as funked up as we all like it!

Review: Originally released back in 1999, SND's self-released Travelog LP was originally crammed onto one vinyl disc and has sat languishing in the domain of pricey second records ever since. This reissue spreads the music out over two records lovingly cut in blue and purple, with additional bonus tracks making for a more momentous release for some truly astounding minimal electronics. The delicacy of production on this early SND material is staggering, staying utterly captivating with the barest of elements and oozing soul with barely-there melodies in utterly mechanical configurations. With Mark Fell and his Sensate Focus project in high demand these days, it's fascinating to look back to the genesis of that distinctive sound when it was in its infancy.

Review: Detroit house hero Kyle Hall returns with his biggest project in some time in the form of Transmissions, a new double album on his own well-regarded Forget The Clock. All six tracks have enigmatic, functional titles and the music is as idiosyncratic as ever. Each one veers more towards techno than is Hall's usual style, with pulsating synth lines and tight, dusty drum tracks making for stripped-to-the-bones grooves. Later on, things grow ever more abstract with twisted acid lines screwing their way through the increasingly ragged and roughshod drums. These are perfectly imperfect jams from a master of the form.

Review: Italian electronica wizard Paolo Mosca releases his debut LP, a mature and carefully crafted melting pot of influences from all over the electronic sphere. Dub, house, breaks, acid, ambient, progressive... you name it. The A-side houses techno sensibilities, building in intensity from the suspenseful 'Spiritual Birth' to the mechanical 'Connect Our Minds' with it's 90s-influenced industrial leanings. The B-side pivots to the club, with a deep house-techno to piano house combo breaker. Side C sees Mosca's production chops really showing with a dub twist, a Hideki Naganuma style vocal sample featuring on 'Wake Up', against a downtempo groove. The final side sees a grab bag of variety, from drum & bass to ambient with a three-track run that totally surprises. It's not an exaggeration to call 'Transition' and instant classic.

Review: Featuring the collective talents of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Sondorom and Shonky, it's little surprise the Apollonia project has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with in house music over the past two years. Less a production unit, more an excellent DJ tag team and label collective, Apollonia output to date has been the sole Trinidad 12" issued through their eponymous label back in 2013. A debut album then is something of an ambitious move, yet Tour a Tour demonstrates the Parisian trio are more than up to the task. Said to be inspired by their unified approach to Djing, the album consists of 13 tracks that ramp up the intensity deftly in a manner to reflect a DJ mix. French legends Phillip Zdar and Alexkid lend their considered touch to proceedings throughout.

Review: Kompakt's Total series of compilations is described by the long-serving Cologne imprint as a kind of 'yearbook', with each edition - including this 22nd volume - serving as a keepsake of the label's last 12 months. The latest edition therefore boasts material that was mostly signed and released during the lockdown phase of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, though you'd not know given the club-friendly nature of the material on offer. From start to finish, it's packed with genuine aural treats, from the undulating acid bass, dreamy acoustic guitars and ethereal vocal samples of Voigt & Voigt's 'Why' and the shuffling, opioid warmth of Rebedello's 'The Sharper Image', to the sleazy spoken word vocals and head-nodding hip-hop beats of Jurgen Paap's 'Le Monde a Change', and the deep, hypnotic, spaced-out brilliance of Jonathan Kaspar's 'Where Am I'.

Review: It's that time again people: Kompakt rounds up the usual (and not so usual) suspects on its label roster for the year's most definitive collection of dreamy and emotive electronic music for Total 16. There's a lot to get through on here, but as usual; it's all quite brilliant! Starting out with the return of Spanish minimal hero Alex Under on the gloriously uplifting journey track, "Llaman A La Puerta", The Modernist is back also with the sublime deep house of "The Price Of Love" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals. And of course, the regulars: Jurgen Paap with "Eden"; a true highlight which really nails the label's trademark sound, Matias Aguayo with the bleepy and bumpy retro leanings of "Komm" and label bosses Voigt & Voigt with the rather dark and gloomy epic "Denken Sie Laut".

Review: After dipping their toe in with the Coldfish LP, All Inn are returning to the album format once again to present Kamran Sadeghi with the chance to impart a vision of electronic music with a techno framework, although his roots lie in more experimental forms. As such this is a classy set of minimal tracks that place dancefloor demands at the back of the priority list, and instead all manner of textures, sounds, moods and ideas round out a refined production style to a great end. "Follow Up" is a fascinating composition sizzling with subtle details even as it comes on smooth and appealing to the ears, while "Dig Out" constantly mutates with the slither of live drums in amongst the electronics. At every turn this is an album that will delight the mind in entirely original ways, which can never be a bad thing.

Review: Ron Moreli's famously sleazy LIEs welcomes back one of its regular artists in Lipelis, this time with his TMO project alongside extra goodness from keyboardist Eugene Piankov. The pair really go for it from the off, with anthemic house stomper 'Goes D Jam' offering up squealing 303 and 909s that ring out into the cosmos over crunchy drums. '112 Bright Jam' is slower, deeper, more heartfelt with its tender piano chords and 'Goes C Jam' is an acid laced piano celebration. Last of all is '107 Dark Jam' which is a heads down stomp with acid meditations for grotty warehouse spaces at 5am.

Review: The Visitor sees Matias Aguayo return with his third album, and first in four years with such an absence understandable when you consider how busy running Comeme and touring commitments must keep him. Arriving through said Comeme as opposed to Kompakt who released Aguayo's previous long players, this eleven track album feels right at home on a label that jettisons proto-house, new wave, techno and other indigenous body music with a rate beyond prolific. There's a notably more psychedelic tone to this album and Aguayo remains the captivating force he is throughout The Visitor despite contributions from fellow label artists Philipp Gorbachev, Ana Helder, Daniel Maloso and Alejandro Paz.

Following two LPs for the label in 2020, now they're back with The Sensual World, an 11-track masterpiece of modern club gear that moves from spine-tingling techno thunderclaps to psychoactive electro. At all times there's a strong melodic impulse and a woozy beauty which softens even the spikiest elements in the sound. As a result, you're left with some seriously workable club tracks that can inspire emotional responses as well as physical ones.

Review: Celebrating his label's 20th release, Coldfish dreams up his debut album. He personally describes it as "a raw brotherhood of naive imaginations and experiments around the idea of techno" and he's not wrong: super deep and explorative, he subverts all preconceived perceptions of the genre and reconstitutes them at his own will. "Apollonia" and "Aino Lane", for example, come with a bitter aftertaste of Icicle style mechanical dubstep while the wonky, dubbed out shuffle of "The Ambassador" sounds like Tyrant on a moody day and the offbeat chants and obtuse timbre or "Noatak" aren't dissimilar to Villalobos circa "Fizheurer Zieheuer". Whether you use it as a collection of stand-alone tracks or indulge in it as a solid piece of work, this is an accomplished debut.

There is transportative deep house, spaced out beats in tribute to the late great Mike Huckaby and homage to the black roots of this music. 'Last Time We Gonna Do This' is a particular highlight with its soulful vocal samples and shuffling drum work.
