Review: Renowned producer, remixer, DJ and record label owner Carl Craig is one of the few artists who can truly claim to have shaped the sound of
modern electronic music. Making music since the tender age of 17, Craig has created everything from ambient soundscapes to jazz
during the past 20 years, but it's his work in dance music that is at his core. 'Sessions' is a long overdue album that brings together a personal
selection of Carl's incredible back catalogue, from his early work under the aliases Paperclip People and 69 to worldwide hits like 'Throw'
(recently covered live by LCD Soundsystem) and groundbreaking tracks like 'Bug in the Bassbin'. Alongside the classics, the two discs also showcase why Craig is still such a powerful force in music today with a diverse range of remixes for the likes of XPress 2, Theo Parrish and many others. For his rework for Junior Boys'. 'Like A Child' he was just nominated for a Grammy.
The selection also includes previously unreleased tracks, alternative versions of his own productions, as well as some exclusive unreleased
remixes. 'Sessions' reminds us of how exciting and unique Carl Craig's productions and remixes are and why he remains at the top of his game,
a retrospective of one of the world’s most influential and groundbreaking figures in electronic music.

Review: The success story of the two guys from Karlsruhe Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann (aka Ame) is showing no signs of waning. Having led the annual charts of Groove and De:Bug magazines, provided Pete Tong with a single of the month and even making a DJ mix for said DJ's BBC show, the Essential Selection. Their hit "Rej" has been christened by Louie Vega and Danny Krivit (Masters At Work) as the "Plastic Dreams" of the new millennium. So here is their first official mix-compilation! Their DJ sets are currently being celebrated everywhere from Miami to Paris and Helsinki, so it was only a matter of time until they immortalized one of their kicking mixes for home use on an official mix album. Sonar Kollektiv label bosses Jazzanova delivered the first in this "...Mixing" series and in so doing earned worldwide thanks for making one of their eclectic DJ sets available in digital format for the first time. The duo from Karlsruhe selection is no less varied as they switch from old to new, through house, disco, minimal and techno. Synth pioneer Laurie Spiegel, who already presented a prototype of the Detroit techno sound in the 70s, sets things off with her "Appalachian Grove 1" which was written in Fortran (an old computer programme, long before Basic or C). The unusual track "24 Hours From Culture II" from 80s Dutch wave band New Musik is to this day a favourite of DJs like Daniele Baldelli and DJ Harvey. He later also used the classic "Woman Of The World" by Swiss group Formation Double on his legendary "Sarkastic Disco" mix. "Stand Up" from Nexus could easily be mistaken for a Metro Area number. Besides Ame another name that is often being mentioned with regards to the deephouse renaissance is Henrik Schwarz. His most striking remix to date is also his most timeless. The way he accentuates the voice of Robert Owens with opulent strings on Coldcut's "Walk A Mile" means it'll still give you goose bumps in ten years. Ben Westbeech is the star of Gilles Petersons new label Brownswood Records. His track "So Good Today" unites the typical Yoruba style with analogue Chicago sounds. God of remixers, Carl Craig's version of Jonny L's This "Time" was previously only available as a promo so for some the search for this jazz, house and techno hybrid ends with this release. The latest addition to the Innervisions label which Âme started with Dixon is Gilb'R & I:Cube (aka Chateau Flight). Their wide tune "Baroque" makes the perfect bridge to Luciano's "Stone Age" which has been a central part of the Ame DJ set for over two years so could not have been left out of this collection. "Flashback 86" sounds, as the title suggest, as though it might have been made in the late 80s, however actually it is produced by Jonathan Burnip who can otherwise be found behind the counter of London's Soul Jazz record store. Derrick May's Funtopia featuring Jimi Polo remix was also previously only available as a promo. It was given to Ame by Dominic Capello, manager of Glasgow's Sub Club. Of course Ame's own breakthrough track, "Nia", must be celebrated once more before it gets slightly quieter, although no less exciting, with Jump Cutz "Deep Introspection #5". This track is another true classic and favourite of Needs Crew that has long been almost impossible to get. And as true Manuel Gottsching fans Ame of course had to include an Ashra number in the mix. Their track "Sunrain" has been a big influence on the club music of today. As a whole, Ame's "...Mixing" is not just a bridge between old and new, club and home stereo. It also serves as an interesting connection between various musical genres which are currently dominating the good metropolitan clubs.

Review: When this album first came out we had only met the charismatic Madteo once before, and that was through his debut Basiado Beatdown single. Releasing an album on Morphine as your second release ain't no bad way to follow up, and what will be received as a wave of excitement to many, is news that Memoria from 2008 has been repressed. Over its nine tracks there's clunky ambient and abstract deep house to enjoy alongside dubby experimental sessions, many-a disjointed beat, blurry hip hop featuring the spat rhymes of Sensational and other tell tale signs of why Madteo is still one of today's most original music producers.

Review: It's rare these days that you have a spare 90 minutes to focus on an album, but Techno Primitivism is one of those albums that makes you want to change your lifestyle accordingly. Everything about this new album from Juju & Jordash breathes class - released on Dekmantel with three slabs of 180 gram vinyl spread across a gatefold sleeve complemented by killer design from Orpheu De Jong, and brandishing a blend of music that's fully representative of the Amsterdam based duo's styles and influences. At 15 tracks deep, the full beauty of Techno Primitivism will undoubtedly reveal itself slowly, the cheeky misnomer of the title hinting at Gal & Jordan's often revealed humour. Opening in grand style with the triple suite of "Stoplight Loosejaw", "Diatoms" and "Backwash", the duo set a hazy, atmospheric tone that remains throughout, with brief machine funk interludes such as "Slow Boat To Haifa" and "Rogue Wave" in between longer improvised explorations. Favourites on this album change with every listen, but you can't deny the potency of tracks such as "Powwow" or the Magic Mountain High referencing "Track David Would Play" or the superbly titled "Dr Strangepork". One of the albums of this year, without doubt!

The Ace (Butch remix)
Loving (Mark Broom Soul mix)
Twentythree (Gregor Tresher remix)
Review: An essential part of the German Techno scene for more than fifteen years now, Johannes Heil is now in better shape than ever. With his eighth studio album "Loving", Heil draws both a modern and traditional balance of his life from and for the music, and thus sets one of the undisputed musical highlights this year. vWith this exclusive remix package, Cocoon Recordings is even topping that one: the Mainz-born Bülent Gürler aka Butch is known as one of the most versatile German Tech House producers, at least since his club smasher "No Worries". In his version of "The Ace", the perfect open air hymn for the modern House generation is emerging from a flute-like summer harmony. An essential contributor to the British Techno scene since the beginning of the nineties is Mark Broom. His Soul Mix of "Loving" combines the melancholy of Detroit techno with Ibiza House dubs and powerful handclaps, forming an intensive homage to the sensuality of the dance floor. Last not least, Gregor Tresher is celebrating the return of the melody with his remix of "Twentythree", after having released some stricter records for Break New Soil and Drumcode. The digital edition of the Loving remixes is completed by three more revisions: Amsterdam-based Bart Skils massively stresses the bass membrane with his pumping version of "Loving", while Mark Broom is pushing further into the depths of the Balearic Dub surge with his second Soul Mix. With "Seeded", the Cocoon Club House duo C-Rock/Matthias Vogt aka Motorcitysoul is finally exploring the occasionally menacing deepness of the House area with vibrating percussions and disco strings, just in the manner of their releases for Simple Records and Ibadan. After all, love wants to be shared.

Review: Percussion, rhythms and intricate polyrhythms have always laid down the foundations of Reboot's music ever since he first arrived on the scene three years ago. Since that debut, "Be Tougher / Letters" from back in 2007 on Luciano's Cadenza imprint, the talented German has made a fast and steep rise to becoming one of dance music's hottest properties. He has seen single and EP releases on Cocoon, Below, Love Letters from Oslo, Motivbank, Below and Ricardo Villalobos' Sei Es Drum imprint in addition to highly acclaimed mix CDs for Cocoon and Cécille. Shunyata, his first ever LP marks his return to Cadenza and keeps his ever flowing, tribal polyrhythms at the centre of its sound.

Its title is loosely translated from its Buddhist origins as ‘emptiness’ which is not used here in a negative sense but as a reference to the album’s state of impermanence and constant state of flux. Utilising the album format, Reboot manages to make the individual tracks start at one point and lead to somewhere completely different, keeping the entire record moving in a constant and kaleidoscopic motion. He builds these spiralling grooves or intricate polyrhythms by interconnecting instruments such as congas, bells, cymbals, woodblocks, shakers, steely drums and aluminium barrels, binding them together to weave an evolving groove. Added to that, stranger sound elements such as field recordings, cut up, distorted vocals, pings and gurgles permeate the percussion layers whilst a spongy bed of compressed bass fills the low end.

The focus is once more on the dancefloor as tracks like the peaktime "Hermano," the deepness of "Dreliach" the hypnotic "Me Show," and the darker vibes of "Save Me" all play testament to. However, there are also some more unexpected moments such as the skipping and melodic "Rambon," the spiralling "Down Pantha," the sedate opener "Uruana" and the sampled guitar that appears on "Sanchez Says." It's very structural nature makes Shunyata an album in the true sense of the word, demanding full and repeat listens to fully appreciate its beauty.

Midnight Sun (LP version)
Review: This second album from the former trio (now permanently joined by fourth member The Mole) sees Cobblestone Jazz refine the process and sounds from their debut 23 Seconds. Though rooted in minimal techno, the group take a much more free and improvisational approach to recording, something that bears fruit almost immediately on Sun Child which combines the slick Rhodes piano sound of Bob James with paper thin claps and live cymbals to give the tune a vitality seldom heard on rigid minimal.

Mr Polite is a great lesson on how to use vocoders to devastating effect - repeating a mantra-like refrain as instruments join in around it. Children on the other hand is sparse and edgy with shakers and hi-hats to the fore. Stepping away from techno rhythms briefly, Midnight Sun slows the pace right down and creates a dreamy soundscape around some distant and seriously warped vocals - a combination that's as beautiful as it is intriguing. Though Cobblestone Jazz's approach is different to most, don't let the methodology fool you - it's still a minimal dance record through and through, albeit with some brilliantly fresh ideas and sounds.

Review: Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts has constantly challenged people’s perception of dance music throughout a career that has seen him develop one of the most distinctive styles in contemporary house music. His sound has encompassed a deep, powerful and original fusion of afro and Latin percussion, instrumental melodies, soulful vocals, and intricate rhythm programming. His second artist album, which is released into an even more fragmented scene than his first effort, sees the Montreal native moving even further beyond the conventional definitions of house and techno.

Breaking the Fourth Wall meanders effortlessly between deep house, minimal techno and acid jazz. Inspirited less by laptops and drum machines and more by traditional Afro and Latin percussion, the album consists of almost entirely live instrumentation. Aided by a host of players, the album features several collaborations which includes Circus Company chums dOP and Dave Aju, who injects a Chicago feel into the project. Forward progressing percussive cuts such as "Can’t Have Everything" and "Mindtrap" sit alongside Pink Floyd-esque reflective pieces like "Intermède" and "Discothèque" that play out with guitar solos and horns whilst house tracks such as "Walking the Pattern" and slow burning afro-grooves such as "Radio Novela" slot into the album where they please. Their disjointed arrangement makes the tracks much more suited to listening to the album as a whole rather than picking out single tracks, another testament to the musicality held within it.

Striking a perfect accord with the eclecticism of Circus Company, Breaking the Fourth Wall is not only a wholly satisfying experience from start to finish, but will also cement Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts' place in the worlds of house, jazz, minimal and everything in between.

Review: Sven Vath presents us with Sounds Of The Eleventh Season, a bumper double CD mix celebrating another summer on the White Isle. The opening CD is initially a deep, dark and dubby affair, taking us through Chateau Flight's remix of Mano Le Tough, DJ Koze's impeccably produced "Sbooty" and the tropical techno of Speedy J (remixed by Edit Select). Sven, the old rascal, takes a turn for the rave cave towards the end with MMM's immense "Nous Sommes MMM" wild stuff indeed! The second CD opens with the raw analogue shuffle of DJ Qu's "The Law", before proceeding into a more housey, vocal led workout. The inclusion of Kyle Hall's superlative remix of the Hundred In The Hands "Dressed In Dresden" is a particularly pleasing moment. Life in the old dog yet? Silly question.

Ocbinh's Groove
Review: For their 86th release the mighty, mighty Perlon bring on board Margaret Dygas with a self titled not EP not album. Working her way through sparse and cosmic minimal spirals as we expect, "Missing You Less" shows her delicate edge with light piano keys and muffled strings giving a feminine touch to her otherwise driving style. "Soon" reverts to Dygas as we know her, with hitting drum patterns and reverbed tech goodness from the start. "Country Way Of Life" on the second disk is meandering and spooky, with indecipherable vocals popping up intermittently as a heavy kick and syncopated drums rise from below. "Ocbinh's Groove" meanwhile is dark and moody, as pads swoop and samples howl. Diverse, quality, pure minimal techno... Perlon live on.

Review: It's hard to believe that Sven Vath's empire has been in existence for 11 years, but what's easier to comprehend is the label's unerring knack of releasing killer club techno. This compilation gives some of Vath's favourite artists - like Roman Flugel and Steve Rachmad - as well as newbies like Patrick Kunkel, who also provides a DJ mix, a chance to rework the catalogue. From Visionquest's murky but driving take on Dinky's "Acid in My Fridge" through the abrasive, jacking Flugel remix of Martin Buttrich's "Hunter", Carlo Lio's tribal take on Dubfire vs Huntemann's "Diablo" and the fist-pumping, big room techno of Paul Ritch's interpretation of 2000 & One's "Tropical Melons", there can be no doubt about this compilation's dance floor credentials.

Review: Ame have always been an inventive pair, but even by their standards this is a departure. Along with Amampondo, they've laid down a delicious chunk of ethno-house that just bristles with summery energy. There are infectious lead and backing vocals from the Cape Town based troupe, looped-up acoustic guitars, heavy electronic melodies and, naturally, some deliciously epic builds based around deep organ chords. While the first version is closer in style to much of their previous output, it's the second version that really hits the spot - if only for the sweetness of the production and the summery strut of the composition. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but we think it's spiffing.

Review: Get Physical drop a four track sample of what to expect from the Heidi curated Jackathon compilation of original jack music, which was borne out of her series of international club nights. The bar has been set high by the contributions here with Soul Clap, Deetron, Matias Kaden, and Lauhaus & Kabale Und Liebe. Boston duo Soul Clap commence proceedings with the decidedly sleazy bottom heavy bumps of "Incoming Bitch (Get Low)" whilst Deetron adopts a tighter approach to jacking house on "The Juggler". On the flip Vakant regular Matias Kaden drops the relentless, twisted pressure of "Jackathon" which features a winning vocal turn from Gjaezon. It's an all Dutch affair to end proceedings as Lauhaus teams up with Kabale Und Liebe to serve up "Who Called Kenny?" a clipper minimal jacker that features the whispered vocals of WKD.

Review: Sven Vath's long-standing Cocoon brand begins its second decade with this 12-track label collection. Cheekily titled Compilation K, it proudly boasts a deeper-than-average collection of Euro-centric tech-house grooves that should appeal to afterhours the world over. With Dinky, Henrik Schwartz, Argy and Sascha Dive involved alongside an coterie of lesser-known names, there's plenty to investigate. While highlights are perhaps not as plentiful as you'd expect, the standard is reliably high. Certainly, deep house minded DJs will find plenty of floor-friendly fodder, not least David August's comforting opener and Minilogue's delicious "Blessed", while techno heads will flock to Argy's retro-futurist gem "The Thrust".

Review: Featuring the collective talents of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Sondorom and Shonky, it's little surprise the Apollonia project has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with in house music over the past two years. Less a production unit, more an excellent DJ tag team and label collective, Apollonia output to date has been the sole Trinidad 12" issued through their eponymous label back in 2013. A debut album then is something of an ambitious move, yet Tour a Tour demonstrates the Parisian trio are more than up to the task. Said to be inspired by their unified approach to Djing, the album consists of 13 tracks that ramp up the intensity deftly in a manner to reflect a DJ mix. French legends Phillip Zdar and Alexkid lend their considered touch to proceedings throughout.

Review: After releasing two installments last year, the Studio R collective commit themselves to a triple-pack release that quite frankly lays waste to the competition when it comes to contemporary house and techno compilations. With a cast that includes Fred P, Brendon Moeller, DJ Spider, Hakim Murphy and Exercise One, you can't argue with the quality of the work. There's a range of moods on offer but everything resides in the murkier corners of 4/4, and with a definite floor-focused quality to each of the creations, there's a lot of mileage to be gained from investing in this bumper pack of 12 solid jams.

"Faith!" comes on in blue shades of techno-fuelled tension, while "Life Riddimz" keeps things equally fraut and moody. There are warmer moments as on soulful vocal jam "Hip Flexer" and easy-stomping piano worker "Dad?", and there's a healthy amount of weirdness from fractured percussion-baiter "Haze", bt really whatever shade of G you like there's something to enjoy here.

Review: New Romanian label Midi is making a bold entry into the hustle and bustle of the minimal breaks scene, snapping up some of the key players and giving them a side of vinyl each to get stuck into, all presented in a plush gatefold sleeve. Mihigh and Arapu collaborate on the intricate undulations of "Indigen", which pivots around a finely balanced selection of percussion and spooky blasts of sound. Barac holds down a steadier groove on "In Oglinda", using some choice jazz samples sparingly to create a truly eerie, Lynchian atmosphere. Priku brings a touch more peak time feistiness to "Be Dun Augur" as he works his own pattering drums into a strict and prominent roller perfect for the deeper kind of club, and then Sepp rounds the release off with the illustrious subtleties of "Nopti Tacute".

Review: For a small label with minute sounds, An dromeda is a heavyweight when it comes to releasing the finest in experimental, sparse and dub-laden, extra-ordinary minimal techno. Vid inaugurated the label in 2012 and now provides the outlet with its first album via a triple 12". Should you find the early releases of Giegling appealing, its likely Vid's debut LP will be of interest too through its poppy beats, watery undertones, balanced percussion and dynamic piano manoeuvres. Productions plunge deep without the need of booming kick drums as demonstrated in "Pasul Unu", or the looped chords of "Tripusor", while rustic tribalisms form in "Landrum Bun". An intriguing album transforming how we perceive the micro-isms of danceable electronic music.

Review: Using the Turkish psychedelic project Insanlar as a jump off point, Honest Jon's have enlisted Ricardo Villalobos to turn out one of his grandiose remix projects that gels so naturally with more exotic sound sources. The original of "Kime Ne" is already an enchanting, Moog-infused groover rich with traditional vocals, and then Mr Villalobos locks the ingredients in for a typically cosmic ride into stripped and hypnotic house territory, letting the lutes intertwine with dusty reams of percussion using that alchemists touch that could only come the man himself. The remix spreads itself over two sides of wax, leaving one side of the double pack free for a fetching etching as well.

Review: British producer Tim Green is still at it. After making his splash on the scene several years on respected imprints such as Trapez, Dirtybird and Get Physical with his highly technical minimal grooves, his profile has reached another plateau as seen by this release on Sven Vath's vanguard Cocoon. First up is "Eclipse" with its warped, monster bassline and mesmerising synth work flowing all over the place that'd appeal to all the Border Community heads. On the flip we have "Thieves" going for a more standard tech house groove, getting some nice synth pads happening over a pumping peak time groove.

Damn right it is, so here's more with the good news; several tracks of slamming tech funk that this man is renowned for and it's all killer. First track "Entrance" is the soundtrack to a techno aerobics class, take a listen! "Sub Level 3 (G's Freak Zone)" uses a nasty arpeggio untypical of his previous work but those strings that come in are just epic! "Interlude @ ?" keeps on with his typical sense of humour and in sound with its tough and dirty sense of funk that's so emotive at the same time. "Thrust" is proper peak time business that reminds you why he was once one half of The Advent; banging, doom laden hard groove.

Review: It has been 16 years since Daze Maxim's last album, Same Place The Bot Got Smashed. Markus Manowki's new album is on his own Hello Repeat imprint that he runs with Jan Krueger. The title refers to meditative breathing exercises, something that he had begun at the same time as working on the LP. As you'd expect it is all fairly minimal, like most of his output since the label began. Starting out with the wacky ambience of "Diachronica" and the mellow piano led vibes of "Happy Collapse" it's soon business as usual like on the dubby deep house of "Melted Talk" or "On The Way Back", the druggy after-hours minimalism of "Darkness In Your Pocket" or "Shift Limbs" not to mention the several other interesting ambient and downbeat interludes throughout the album. All in all a strong effort.
