Review: The little-known Traffic Records are a curious bunch, blending intriguing inner labels, adorned with various art styles, with gregarious dance music. Based in Frankfurt, they always set out to do justice to their homedown, sourcing local artists almost exclusively. New signee Mayell chucks cut-up vocoders and street-traffic basses into a beguiling stew, producing four cuts that would sound right at home in a modern-day spy thriller.

Review: Kepler is a man on fire right now - well, he has been for some time in fact. As well as serving up a new collaborative outing with Burnski, he has also put together this solo EP for Pilot. 'Zone' is a twitchy tech cut with bleeping melodies over silvery and silky tech drums. 'Good 2 Me' has a naughty shuffle to it as the crisp drums bring the infectious groove and the smart vocals add human colour. 'The Beat' kicks off the B-side with a nice squelchy bassline and some rude-boy sonic signifiers while 'Back Moving' then has a lovely low-slung swaying funk to it.

At De Stella
Review: Ever since they moved to the UK back in 2000 Italoboyz, aka Marco Donato and Federico Marton, have built a formidable reputation
in the fertile minimal techno scene of their adopted hometown, London. Their energetic DJ sets at Fesh are the stuff of local legend.
Their productions, meanwhile, have seen them gain notoriety around the world.
Now Italoboyz consolidate their position as dancefloor alchemists par excellence with a 12 inch for Berlin's Get Physical.
'Zinga' is every bit as hot as its title implies, and once again proves Italoboyz' knack for sourcing sounds usually foreign to the club
and then making the club wholeheartedly rock to them.

Zib Escort (Cezar remix) (13:15)
Review: Mannheim imprint Kusi has previously given us a release by David Nicolas featuring a superb remix by Romanian wunderkind Barac; what a debut if we've ever seen one! For their second edition it's Nicolas again, collaborating with Sebastian Werle as Sedee on KUSI 002. "Zib Escort" is the kind of deep and hypnotic, percussion driven groove reminiscent of the aforementioned Barac or Vincentiulian. Druggy and minimal afterhours business executed finely! On the flip, the remix by Understand label boss Lezar Cezar is even more reduced, quirky and bumpy in a way that's undeniably Perlon influenced; are we're liking it!

Review: Berlin's Subtil imprint returns with a new split EP titled Zerno, featuring French minimal expert Doubtingthomas and Siberia's Wyro (Engineer Records). The pair collaborate once again after last year's Unten EP for Metroline Limited. The title track is a long, low-slung and trippy affair that's aimed squarely at the afterhours dancefloor. On the flip we have two more offerings: the rolling, sunny tech house of 'Bloom' which will mix well with you Mulen records, followed by the slo-mo psychedelia of 'Prilivi' which will come in handy during that ambient set you've been eager to play one day.

Review: Minimal house from Romania here! Now that we've got your attention; yes, it's pretty awesome stuff from Colorhadoo, aka Rhadoo under a new alias, and he certainly delivers the goods, also yet again making a transition in his studio prowess. "J Strawberry" is just beyond categorisation really and it's easily one of the most paranoid and sinister soundscapes we've heard of late and we love that kind of stuff! The Christi Cons remix is a welcome dancefloor friendly revision; all deep and hypnotic as you'd expect with an uneasy atmosphere and trademark creepy vocals murmuring in the background.

As I Left College (7:16)
Don't Fight The Feeling (6:51)
No Wait (7:15)
Review: Paris' Yoyaku imprint serves up yet another edition in its YYY series, courtesy of anonymous artists or alter egos of established ones on the minimal house scene. This is actually the second part in the limited sublabel series, which was inaugurated last year by Difid aka Dakpa from Palma de la Mallorca. Bumpy and looped up house on the hypnotic afterhours tip is the order of the day on "As I Left College" and reminiscent of Derrick Carter's work as Sound Patrol back in the day. The reduced mini-funk of "Don't Fight The Feeling" is perfect after hours fare that will go down a treat on dancefloors as far as Berlin and Bucharest, while "No Wait" (on the flip) goes deeper down the rabbit hole, taking in some even trippier and hypnotic elements than heard heard even earlier.

Review: Mysteries and rumours still shroud Yoyaku and the identities behind its YYY series. This time we are given a name: Vincen, whose only available details are that he works in the Yoyaku studio. You can tell, too... The second the liquid analogue tones drip and melt over the thundering robust kicks and those sinewy atmospheres whisper into the mix, there's a sense of class and weight that can come from no amateur. The same can be said for the more forthright acid house homage "Fune". Loopy and rolling like DJ Pierre at his prime, this could crumble bare warehouse walls within bars. Long may this mystery continue.

398A (8:01)
398B (7:19)
Review: There's been plenty of hype surrounding the YYY Series since it launched earlier this year. So far, information has been limited. We know that the mysterious label is associated with the Paris-based Yoyaku agency and record shop, but not the identities of the producers behind the releases. Still, as long as the quality remains high, few DJs will care. "398A" is a chunky, floor-filling affair, with woozy, Detroit style synth motifs joining forces with a bustling, pleasingly percussive groove. It's not quite deep house, tech-house or techno, but rather something in between. Arguably even better is flipside "398B", whose combination of fluttering synthesizer riffs and two-step influenced deep house beats is both beautiful and floor-friendly.

Track 1 (8:28)
Track 2 (8:52)
Review: While we know the identities of those behind the hyped YYY series - Parisian record store, DJ agency and recording studio Yoyaku - they're still keeping tight-lipped about the identities of the producers behind their well-regarded releases. This latest missive - the fourth in the series to date - is also shrouded in mystery. This much we know: it contains two versions of the same untitled track. The A-side is crisp and sharp, with an increasingly ragged acid bassline, slowly emerging chord progressions and clanking drum machine hits combining. It feels a little like a techno head's take on analogue deep house, if that makes sense. The flipside version moves further towards straight-up techno territory, with ghostly pads seemingly floating above a denser, chunkier rhythm track.

Alpha Corvus (8:07)
Review: Markus Herbert is having a busy 2021. This is his third EP of the year, and the third EP to come exclusively on YYK no label, which is a daughter to the yoyaku imprint. It is another timeless fusion of spaced-out beats, prime 90s tech house and subtle minimalism that is designed for heady DJ sets. 'IV Anbus' is quick and slick, with its bouncing kicks and crunchy hits, then 'Balut' is a much more intriguing atmosphere with spiraling ambient pads and a more skeletal rhythm sinking you into a late-night headspace. 'Alpha Corvus' closes with a clatter of DIY percussive sounds, pixelated chord stabs and a sense of cyborg funk that you will not be able to resist.

Review: On this EP, Mule Musiq has gathered together a crack team of artists to rework tracks from Lawrence's most recent album, the fine Yoyogi Park. Kettenkarussell serve up two fine reworks of "Illuminated", first heading into deep space, atmospheric techno territory before breaking up the beats on their dreamier, more fragile Yin Mirror version. The headline attraction is arguably Roman Flugel's rework of "Clouds and Arrows", which wraps sparkling synthesizer melodies and cascading piano lines over a bouncy tech-house groove. Arguably best of all, though, is Lake People's version of "Simmer", which fixes bouncy, old school house pianos to a sparkling electro groove.

Review: Ross From Friends is now firmly part of the house establishment, and part of the reason is because of his essential early EPs. This is one of them and it came on the Lobster Theremin label all the way back in 2016. Already by the time of release the tracks had made their mark on global dance floors and to this day they still bang. The heart-aching samples and subtle synth work of 'Talk To Me You'll Understand' bring nagging emotional feels and lo-fi drum work to the dance floor, 'Gettin' It Done' is all nostalgic vapourware synth washes and fuzzy old school drums and closer 'Bootman' brings a gorgeous R&B sample to the table.

Review: As Toolroom only puts out a small percentage of their releases on vinyl, those given the wax treatment tend to be anthems in waiting. Martin Ikin's 'You', featuring some seriously loved-up, glassy-eyed lead vocals from Chenai, certainly sounds like a future classic. Shamelessly positive and life-affirming, 'You' is a turn-of-the-90s style piano house workout with added 21st century weight, a few disco-house style filters and a raw, stabbing bassline. The cheery vocal version (side A) comes back by a quite different Dub mix. This opts for a darker, chunkier big room sound - all wobbly riffs, pulsing electronic noises, cut up vocal snippets and mind-mangling motifs - that should delight all those who love Toolroom's trademark sound.

Review: Since Zip and Villalobos made it one of their coveted deep digs to be heard pealing out of a thousand after hours sessions, the Metamatics remix of A1 People has been a teasingly out of reach dream grab for many a minimal electro head. Now Yossi Amoyal has done the good deed of getting the track remastered and repressed as part of his Fluere series toasting 15 years of Sushitech. As well as that masterclass of elegant machine funk, there's also Kosmogonik's mind-bendingly brilliant 'Circuitry', Silicon Scally's body-popping electro-noir 'Relay' and Matt Chester's melancholic 'November Pathways' to keep your up-all-night marathon sets peppered with spangled surprises.

Review: Sushitech boss Yossi Amoyal continues to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his label with the impeccably curated Fluere compilation series. A hefty salvo of classic and forgotten tracks have been remastered and pressed up, and there's another four such delights on here. Steve O'Sullivan gets the run of the A side with the rich, dynamic techno jam 'Paracelsus' in its original form and the stripped back 'Alchemy Mix'. Seriously deep Two Lone Swordsmen cut 'Felt Under Pressure' kicks off the B-side, still sounding like the future 21 years after it originally came out. Matt Chester's 'Never See Us' equally reaches stratospheric heights with the kind of electro that remains untouchable after all this time.

Killer Loop - "Someone" (Juan Atkins remix)

MSL - "Limits Of Likeness"
Review: The Sushitech label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi Amoyal has put together the Fluere compilation across four discs, plus this extended fifth part, titled Fatum. Juan Atkins' remix of 'Someone' by Killer Loop takes up residence on the A-side of this three tracker, all swirling, warm pads and spiralling filters, the percussion almost leaning towards disco with its syncopated handclaps, although the overall effect is as shiny and futuristic as you would expect from this Detroit legend. Flip it over for Terry Brookes' 'Breaking Cycles', a calm spoken word narration providing a meditational mantra to accompany the chugging house foundations, full of gentle tease. 'Limits of Likeness' by MSL completes the package with restless electro machinations and shifting clouds of synth floating across its horizon. Sheer bliss all round.

Don't Walk Away (8:27)
Review: The fourth missive on Russian label Yoi - an off-kilter tech-house-meets-deep house imprint partially inspired by Paris's Yoyaku organisation - comes courtesy of shadowy debutant Artmann. The results are pleasingly effective and quietly impressive, from the smooth, spacey and shuffling warmth of ear-pleasing opener 'It's About Time', to the even sunnier, garage-influenced twinkle of afternoon-hot closing cut 'Don't Walk Away', where high register synth solos and billowing chords wrap their way around a bouncy and dreamy groove. Elsewhere, 'Nobody is Perfect' offers a sunrise-ready blend of chunky tech-house grooves, squelchy synth bass and deep space pads, while 'What Life's All About' is a huggable slice of wide-eyed deep house bliss.

It's Pilot he returns to for this bang tidy two tracker of taut and crisp breaks which wouldn't sound out of place in a Plump DJs set circa 2005. 'Ying Yang' slips some vocodered spirituality in amongst a punchy beat and warm splashes of analogue synth work. The slightly saucier 'Drop De Tiddies' rides a break and works an old-skool hip hop sample before ripping into some chirpy lead lines, making for a fun and fruity dancefloor delight.

Review: Recorded during lockdown - hence the rather apocalyptic title - and made in part using a different set of hardware and software tools than his previous work, Year of the Living Dead has a slightly different feel than John Tejada's previous full-length excursions. Of course, his fine grasp of mood and melody remains a major feature, as does his love of warming ambient chords and dreamy electronics, but these elements are twisted round a wider variety of rhythms (think mutant electro, post-dubstep UK bass, UK garage and dub techno), with warm, deep and rich sub-bass coming to the fore throughout. Tejada rarely misses the mark, of course, but there's a surprising freshness to the album that means you'd do well to sit up and take notice.

Review: Remix albums tend to fall into two categories; ill conceived and lazy, or brilliantly thought out and executed. Fortunately, XI Versions of Black Noise is the latter. Admittedly, the source material in this case was special - Pantha Du Prince's widely acclaimed experimental minimalist opus Black Noise - but that in itself is no guarantee of success. Yet with such an impressive line-up of talent involved - Lawrence, De Vogel, Animal Collective etc - there was little chance of this being a flop. Shifting between symphonic house (The Sight Below), dub wise techno (Moritz Von Oswald in surprisingly upbeat mood), clanking aural assault (the Hieroglyphic Being), creeping delirium (the Walls) and everything-but-the-kitchen-sink craziness (Four Tet), XI Versions Of Black Noise is a riotously entertaining collection.

Review: Gabor Schablitzki has long been one of European techno's most underrated talents. Although rightly celebrated within the underground techno community, he's yet to achieve much in the way of wider acclaim, either as a DJ, or for his productions under the more familiar Robag Wruhme and Wighomy Brothers monikers (the latter alongside Soren Bodner). In many ways it's a shame, because his particular take on the German minimal sound - soft, melodic, warm and shuffling, with just a hint of swing to the percussion - is far more attractive than the stripped back darkness favoured by many of his contemporaries. Whether you're a confirmed fan or a first-timer, you'll find plenty to enjoy on Wuppdeckmischmampflow, his first solo DJ mix for Kompakt. Like 2008's similarly wonderful Wighomy Brothers mix MetawuffmischfelgeA.A., it inhabits a kind of strange no-man's land between DJ mix and production showcase, with individual tracks taken apart, reworked and fused with others to create one smooth, winding hour-long journey. So, for example, tracks by Villalobos, Tiefschwarz and Schablitzki himself merge to make one beautifully melodic whole, before dropping effortlessly into an FX-laden version of Chateau Flight's "Cosmic Race". With tracks by Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, Claro Intellecto, Four Tet, Koze, Moderat and Ian Simmonds getting a similar treatment, the results are rarely less than spellbinding.

The Icelandic producer has long been turning out icy and atmospheric rollers for the heads and here he works alongside a fresh name, Quantal, who is sure to go on to big things. Here they land on Thule Records, a legendary label in its own right with roots going back to 1995. They kick off with the textured dub of 'WQ1' which has glitchy sounds paying over the rolling drums. 'WQ2' is much more smooth and streamlined, with an underwater current that sweeps you off your feet, then 'WQ3' leans into the wind with hypnotic techno drums and vamping chords that melt the mind. Last of all comes 'WQ4', a timeless dub with infinite horizons and the most frictionless drum loops.

Unnutritious (UserUNKNWN remix) (7:21)
Review: The Bosom LTD label got off to a strong start through 2020 with releases from Raru, Kirik and Spiri:tual. Now the Portugese minimal label is inviting a fresh talent in the shape of Cirkel Square, who bills themselves as "rominimal, rotech, rodub... and everything in between." That should give you an idea of the sound to expect on this release, which touches on electro on 'Healing' and heads into cloudy dub techno territory on 'Unnutritious'. Vern steps up for a remix of 'Healing' which shifts the track towards crisp minimal house territory, while UserUNKNWN takes 'Unnutritious' into deep-diving broken beat territory - one for the backroom dreamers to get lost in, but also adept for the late morning crowd.

Review: Shadowy techno talent Daniel Avery has been associated with playing killer sets at fabric for more than a decade now. He was entrusted with warm up duties at a very early stage in his career and now carries on his relationship with a second release via fabric Originals which is part of the iconic clubs's ongoing 25 year anniversary celebrations. Says the man himself about this new two-tracker, "as with every club record I ever make, [this one] has Room 1 coursing through its veins. I know that room like the back of my hand and this is how the room sounds in my skull."

Review: Breathy trance lines and light drum snaps adorn the upper edges of this funky new EP from Velvet Velour, which drops imminently on Scratch Disks. Being by its very nature a 4x4 and floor-functional EP, there is an advanced palette of sound that weaves through and between this one's beats. 'Wonderful World Of You' is a strong highlight: some kind of rattly, resonant laser-synth sloshes about the mix, caressing our ears acoustically until the flow state is truly locked. 'No 172', meanwhile, ticks off the box as one for the garage heads. Impressive.

Kasper Marott - "Bleep" (6:17)
New Members - "The Dink" (6:22)
Review: One Eye Witness made a great debut featuring some fine minimal house and techno flavours and now it has assembled another crack team of talents for round two. It is veteran Robert Dietz who kicks off with the cryptically entitled 'EMQU EMJAY,' a deep space trip on silky drums and watery chords. Z@P takes things down a much darker path with rigid drums stomping beneath mechanical chord work. On the flip, Kasper Marott's 'Bleep' gets busy on a microcosm of nebulous synth details and chunky tech funk, and lastly New Members serve up 'The Dink' which is a 90s-tinged bit of electronic house with plenty of lush colours.

Review: Groovy vinyl-only tech house 12" from Leeds duo Oyeme here, debuting for Relikt Records following a spate of podcasts and mixes, as well as a smattering of prior releases and remixes on rival local labels. Dubbed-out tech and shuffle is the name of their game, like a cleaner version of old Unbroken Dub or Mike Dehnert. Standout bits include the watery 'Subconscious Thoughts' and the arp-slapping 'Up In The Clouds'.

Review: Winder is a well named label given that the sounds it deals in take you down meandering paths into the depths of your own mind. The sixth such cerebral sojourn is a various artists affair featuring some of minimal's biggest and most consistent hitters. Roman maestro Priku kicks off with the lumpy bass and scattered hits of 'World of Nothing' and Livio & Roby then got for a more deep and silky and seductive vibe on 'Rakei.' Sublee offers the high pressure house slicker 'Boss Baby' for those who like to glide on astral planes and Suolo rounds out in pensive fashion.

Who's Gonna Do It (6:36)
Review: Jeff Samuel's been delivering consistently excellent levels of tech-tinged house music over the past fifteen years, and the man has been an integral part of the development of labels like Trapez, among others. He's up on another big imprint this week, Ohio's Residual, a label that is home to artists like Boo Williams, Purveyors Of Fine Funk, John Tejada, and a whole list of legendary personalities. "Nevermore" is a track for the house and techno masses, banging its heavy kick away amid a cascade of placid melodies that offer an easy way onto the dancefloor. The flipside contains the more electrifying, broken tool house of "Po Go", followed frantically by the buzzing, vibrating rhythms of "Who's Gonna Do It", a delightfully playful house banger.

Who Made Up the Rules
Run (Ostern Jam)
Review: Weirdly for a producer who's been dipping his toes in tech house since the 90s and with a back catalogue of over 50 releases Patrick Skoog aka Agaric has only recently graced the music buying public with a debut album. Last week in fact, with Who Made Up the Rules? arriving via Ovum. The label offers a twelve inch shaped insight into what you can expect, culling the title track as well as an additional cut on the B Side. If you can see past the vaguely A level art sleeve design, "Who Made Up the Rules" makes for brooding entertainment - all menacing bass, shuffling percussion that has a real snap to it on the beat and heavily delayed vocals whispering the titular refrain. Switching down to 33rpm on the flip, there's an Oriental majesty to the early movements of "Run (Ostern Jam)" though it's soon engulfed in a hypnotic rhythmic throb of vocal repetition, deep bass thrusts and insistent drum programming.

Dance With Your Feet (ACD mix) (6:06)
Review: Having spent six years apart from one another, Marvin & Guy now reunite with Life and Death for two infectious tracks, breaking their two-year silence from original releases. Departing from their signature melodies, the duo presents minimalist compositions tailored for the dancefloor. Born from playful experimentation with a synthesiser bassline, these tracks boast distinctive rhythmic and harmonic shifts - the irresistible appeal of' 'Who Dis' is its fatness and apparently simplicity. Incorporating sounds like shattered glass and Formula 1 engine roars - both meticulously recorded for these tracks - the joy and fun of the creative process shines through in the music and results in effective good time party tracks.

Buffalo Demon (feat Alog) (9:57)
Who Are You? (feat Jorge Gonzalez) (8:58)
Review: A return to Raum Musik for Ricardo Villalobos arrives with the Chilean in the midst of one of his most creative production streaks. Who Are We lands before a mooted Vilod LP on Perlon from Villalobos and Max Loderbauer and after remixes for Honest Jon's and a contribution to the Aira Series from Roland and Rawax. It is of course his second 12" for Raum following the classic Baby from 2012 and these two new productions find him in a collaborative mood. "Buffalo Demon" features Rune Grammofon duo Alog whilst the title track pairs Villalobos up with compatriot Jorge Gonzalez. Both are superb, but "Who Are You?" is Villalobos channelling his weirder side and that's how we like our Ricardo tracks.

Review: Burnski's excellent Constant Sound keeps up the vibes with a new one from Rossi, a newcomer who impressed last time out on Eastenderz. His popping tech house and garage is catchy from the off where 'Who Am I' layers up nice cosmic pads and spaced out atmospheres while pounding drums make you move. 'Sunrise' is anot4her silky smooth and dynamic deep tech garage cut while 'Mima' has rubbery drums and bass that pull you deep down into a nice warm world of underground sound. 'Break 518' rides a rugged breakbeat that is kinetic and crisp, while snappy snares do a fine job of keeping you locked up top.
