Review: For those who dig what was once called progressive house, the Balance series from Australian label EQ has always been a "must check". Most contributors tend to push the boat out, resulting in deeply melodic and otherworldly sets that blur the boundaries between true mix and full-on production. That's certainly the case here, as Spanish DJ/producer (and part-time TV sound designer) Henry Saiz carefully crafts two discs of prog-not-prog blissfulness. Saiz's sound is based on the fusion of IDM electronica and shuffling, early morning house, and that's the overriding theme here - giving the mix an enjoyably fluid sound and style.

Review: Since releasing his debut album 12 years ago, Solomun has become one of the world's most popular tech-house artists - a DJ/producer with a wonky but accessible style tailor-made for big rooms and debauched afterparties. His change in status is reflected on belated second album Nobody is Not Loved, which appears via major label MBG packed with guest stars including Jamie Foxx, Zoot Woman and Planningtorock. Wisely given his DJ roots, the Hamburg-based producer has made the set a non-stop mix that gently increases in intensity before mellowing out again right at the end. Highlights include the minimal-meets-deep soulpop opener 'Ocean', the Isolee-influenced melodic shuffle of 'The Center Will Hold', the tech-house-goes-electroclash sleaze of 'Tuk Tuk' and the moody, new wave-inspired darkness of 'Kreatur der Nacht'.

Review: Six years after debuting, Global Underground's Select series has reached its seventh instalment. Like its' predecessors, the two-disc set offers a pair of non-stop mixes (created by an uncredited DJ or studio engineer), both of which are packed to the rafters with up-front, soon-to-be-everywhere cuts plucked from the worlds of tech-house, progressive house and techno. Expect tracks and remixes from the likes of Stephan Bodzin & Marc Romboy, Ame, Patrice Baumel, Gorge, Steve Bug, Fur Coat, Captain Mustache [sic] and Alan Fitzpatrick, plus a breathless, life-affirming flow and entertainment aplenty. As the old Ronseal advert used to proclaim, this does "exactly what it says on the tin".

Review: Hamburg based label Dial Records shot to fame in the second half of the 00s with their high brow approach to deep, minimal house and techno. Founded in 2000, they now celebrate their tenth birthday with a new compilation featuring all their usual suspects, aptly titled 2010.

Set up at the turn of the millennium by Carsten Jost and Peter M, better known as Lawrence, Dial remained largely unnoticed at first. It was only the last five or so years that the imprint famed for its sophisticated and emotionally evocative style of deep and minimal house came to the wider attention. Releases such as Efdemin's "Bergwein" EP and Pantha Du Prince This Bliss have garnered them the most attention leading up to today's celebratory compilation. But rather than just collecting the finest moments from those ten years, such is Dial's ethos, that they celebrate with entirely new material, including previously unreleased tracks from the likes of Rndm, Pigon and John Roberts.

Opening the compilation in typically refined style, Phantom Ghost embark on a fittingly theatrical ode to the pleasures of the highlife with the twilight keys of "My Secret Europe." Cultivated 4/4s then take over, starting with John Roberts who brings a classical element into the mix on "Lines." Efdemin explores sensuously deep tribalism on "Time," whereas Kassian Troyer uses layers of sub bass on "Tourist" to get into the groove. Isolee makes a rare appearance with some trippier house moments on "Black Lodge" before Pigon take it unfeasibly deep on "Koto." One of the label's starlets, Pantha Du Prince adds one of the highlights of the release with the enveloping masterpiece of "Fountain Drive."

Dial celebrate their tenth year, and twentieth release, the only way they know how - with a selection of tracks that look unreservedly forward, proving their need to do more than simply sit back on their previous successes. I'm just looking forward to their 2020 compilation.

Review: The new Ryan Elliott-curated Spectral Sound compilation, Document is the label's ultimate manifesto of its decade-long evolution. Typically for the imprint, this compilation traverses a range and styles as it plays homage to Spectral's old guard and revered guests, including the likes of Elliott, Audion, Hieroglyphic Being and James T. Cotton, whilst also bringing in the sounds of the new breed such as Seth Troxler, Lee Curtis and Kate Simko. Lawrence and Bodycode bridge the gap in between, making it near on impossible to give this superb mix an overall label - except perhaps to say that it is a superb representation of the past, present and future of one of the most important labels in contemporary electronic music.

Review: Klang Elektronik is happy to re-release Alter Ego's second album "Decoding The Hacker Myth" ten years after its original release. The album was responsible for Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke's worldwide breakthrough. The album's title was a hint at the widespread view back then that electronic music/techno was computer music without any soul. Alter Ego disproved this by producing an absolute counter draft to the dominating hard trance and progressive house sound which it dominated.

Review: Underworld are back with a soulful, contemplative, yet typically uplifting album. The single and album opener, "Crocodile", is simply as good as they get. "Ring Road" sees Hyde off on one of his famous psycho-geographic jaunts (this one around Romford, on St George's Day), marking time with his compelling word rhythms, while the treated found sounds in "Cuddle Bunny Vs Celtic Villages" conjures a decidedly non-cuddly, almost menacing atmosphere. The lusciously lowering "Beautiful Burnout" features Underworld's trademark synth swathes and swells with a somehow doomed beauty, but the minimal "Holding The Moth" boasts such a bassy spring it practically bounces clean off the vinyl. Meanwhile "Glam Bucket" shimmers like a sheet of liquid crystal and "Best Mamgu Ever" offers a sliver of downbeat, Balearic bliss at the albums close.

Review: Of the continuing themes found throughout the music released on Minus, one constant exploration is the relationship between sound and silence. Within the stripped down but dimensional outcome there exists a polarity that is neither controlled nor accidental, where life imitates art in between the notes. The act of finding inspiration from a sonic molecule or the inaudible space around that element is the nature of expansion and contraction. This is an excellent compilation.

Review: Snorkel are a South London-based collective whose members come from different corners of the alternative scene,
bringing together the tactics of improvisation, electronica, and sound art. Propelled by the Afro-kraut, jazz-dub leanings
of drummer Frank Byng and the rhythms generated by cheap samplers and drum machines, Snorkel revel in the joy of
psychedelic repetition, throwing in elastic interruptions on guitar, analogue and digital synthesisers, trombone, live
samples and vocals. 'Glass Darkly' is the band's debut album on Slowfoot; their live sound was captured over three
freezing days in a studio behind a fish factory, before retiring to the warmth of Snorkel studios to extract the key moments
from these sessions and apply some finishing touches. The album opens with the slow build of the post-apocalyptic
opener 'As the Dust Settles', from there the edgy mood is sustained - riding the turbulence in 'Carpet Flying', grappling
with the angry rattle of 'Alligator', avoiding obstacles in the cut and run of 'Rub Attractor'/'My Elephant', before self-
deconstructing with the squat pop finale of 'This Headphone Mix'.

Review: Stephen Schieberl has produced electronic music for over a decade, taking Let's Go Outside as his moniker.
His discography includes everything from nearly-silent ambient to the most destructive of techno, and all that
lies between. Let's Go Outside's performances borrow from this immense palette to create a form of music that
defies genre. His weird and filthy techno hits you like a rusty chainsaw in the face... in a good way.
'I'll Lick Your Spine', his first 12" on Soma's offshoot label Pnuma, gained huge support from Andrew Weatherall,
Laurent Garnier and Ivan Smagghe with Smagghe going on to reconstruct the track alongside minimal man of
the moment Massi DL in a remix single due on Soma shortly. Schieberl then compiled 100 of his favourite creations
and demanded Soma's A&R whittle these down to a masterpiece album. The result is 'A Picnic With The Hunters',
an incredible electronica album that shifts effortlessly from wonky acid techno, through IDM, ambient and electro,
to gabba-esque techno destroyers. Menacingly fun and blissfully malicious.

Review: Translated into English as "Plastic", 'Kunststoff' is anything but production line - succeeding in sounding as genre defying now as it was when originally released at the half-time interval of the Nineties. Brought back into print by City Centre Offices for a whole new generation to discover, "Kunststoff" is a dreamlike journey through Move D's compelling vision of an electronic vista which doesn't feel a necessity to labour each sonic progression and instead allows the music to gradually unfurl like a majestic digital tapestry. The sound of techno if viewed through a piquant heat-haze, the likes of "Soap Bubbles" and album standout 'In/Out' are intensely textured compositions that take their beats as a flexible spine onto which all manner of sonic flourishes can be mapped. As innovative as any album of the past two decades, "Kunststoff" is generous to the listener - refusing to insult their intelligence through easily pigeon-holed avenues, Move D instead throws up a startlingly diverse selection of music that nonetheless retains a firm cohesive thread. Best enjoyed as a whole, "Kunststoff" revels in juxtaposing the serrated grooves of "Nimm 2" against the kaleidoscopic synths and carbonated beats of "Beyond The Machine" - a lullaby for the silicon hearted. Put simply, a stone cold classic.

Review: This is Jeff Samuel's long awaited first artist album. After seven years of making music, the '8-bit Tetris wizard' Jeff Samuel has produced a true classic LP, with tracks that rock the floor as well as tracks that are deep and melodic - sometimes even epic. With 'Step' Samuel consciously wanted to take his melodies as far as he could. While they have always been present in early works, they were never as outward and naked as on this LP. Could this album be his final statement in this direction? Maybe we will find out in another seven years.

Review: Repeat Repeat have returned to Soma with their impressive debut album "Squints", a fresh and wonky technoid excursion that exudes a playful sensibility while packing a potent punch. Haywire artist and well-respected DJ Dave Congreve joined forces with fellow acid house enthusiast Mark Rutherford in the winter of 2004. They have released two well received singles on Soma, "Bounce Your Body To The Box" and "Blippy". Mark's strong musical background and Dave's DJing expertise have combined to create an album of emotive club savvy tracks that are odd and compulsive. The title "Squints" comes from the idea that the easiest way to alter your minds perception is by squinting, this notion is in keeping with the Repeat Repeat attitude to manipulating music into a new refracted form. "Squints" is the amalgamation of two years of delving into their machines and twisting out peculiar rhythms and wobbly grooves. They have now created an album to enchant us all, a delirious concoction that is truly varied and original. The album kicks off with the demented squelch of "Flip Flop", a druggy throb that captures the essence of the Repeat Repeat sound. The hypnotic power of "Loops & Boundaries" continues, this emotive piece is warm and layered with thick chords and melody. The gnarling "Crocodile" follows with its off-kilter lurching funk. They have also included a revised version of their first single "Carpark" and transformed it into an atmospheric killer. "Wassily" is dedicated to one of their favourite painters, Wassily Kandinsky, and is a more experimental track with ethereal tones. "Why Must" is a penetrating dancefloor annihilator that twists and turns in all directions. This is already being played heavily by Richie Hawtin. Following on is the Aphex-inspired "Glass" - this infectious track mangles the title vocal amid a sombre and reflective groove. Concluding "Squints" is the massive "Home Stop Welcome", this is the most driving cut on the album with its growling bass, brooding beats and haunting strings. Review: As one of America's premier techno producers, Geoff White has amassed a catalogue of distinguished releases on labels such as Force Inc, Traum, Proptronix, Morris Audio, Cytrax , Ghostly International and his own Edit Audio. The sound of 'Nevertheless' could be described as dub-influenced, but largely stripped of the endless reverberant, delayed elements which largely define the genre. What remains is a collection of quirky jams which tumble about and squirm around to seemingly no end. There's a balance found in the contradictory worlds that exist between raw/refined, minimal/hyper-arranged, and ethereal/in-your-face. The vinyl version includes 8 tracks while the CD plays straight through and includes a handful of extra tracks mixed together as a continuous arrangement.

Review: The "klick" revolutions are based on live sets, performed during the last two years. It was from the beginning work in progress, which changed every time. It's like one track, with different sideways. A locked box filled with structured noises, confronted with sounds which may turn on some reference systems. Includes an 18 page booklet revealing all locked-groove records Brinkmann used for the album.

Review: Station 17 was founded 18 years ago by initiator Kai Boysen together with handicapped and non-handicapped musicians in Hamburg. In the 90s Station 17 worked together with producers like Holger Czukay (Can), FM Einheit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Thomas Fehlmann (Kompakt, The Orb) as well as DJ Koze and Cosmic DJ (International Pony, Fischmob). This unusual music project doesn't tend to be seen as a welfare social project but a serious rival band whose focus lays on a special, steady growing sound aesthetic, and over all - the pleasure in making music. After countless live shows and several side-projects "Mikroprofessor" is the fifth studio album of the band and the first album-release on the self-founded label 17 Rec. The remix album "Hitparade" from 2001 (including remixes by Steve Bug, Barbara Morgenstern, DJ Koze and many others) showed for the first time the electronical side of Station 17, which has consequently continued onto the new album "Mikroprofessor".

Blending the finest of recent Plastic City label output with the grooviest music the world has to offer at this very moment of time, the renowned house producer and DJ manages to effortlessly mix together a seamless journey of joyful, spirited house music. It's a laid-back mind trip that is utterly danceable whilst at the same time maintaining that airy easy-listening vibe which makes the Terry's Café series so successful. The sun is sinking, painting the Plastic City in subtle pink and orange colours. It's time to go for a stroll through the hazy streets to celebrate in Terry's Café - the place where people unwind to timeless house grooves presented in a sophisticated setting. A place where extraordinary things happen.

Jesse Rose - "You're All Over My Head"
Paul Woolford Presents Bobby Peru - "Erotic Discourse"
Aril Brikha - "Groove La' Chord"
Review: London DJ/producer Jesse Rose has been involved with house music for more than half of his life. He began playing at parties and clubs in his early teens with Jamie Anderson, but he still thinks some of his peers got a head start. "14 isn't that young. You hear of US DJ's playing parties when they are just 11". "Body Language 3" sees Jesse condense a typical three-hour set into just over 70 minutes, with deep chords, trippy acid undercurrents and chopped up vocal samples from hip-hop - what he listens to at home - appearing in the shuffling, drummy grooves. "Using hip-hop samples is part of a general attitude," he says. "If you listen to house music when you're making house music, that's when things go wrong. I did the mix using two turntables and a CD deck and it took me three weeks to do properly. Don't ask me why I didn't just do it on a computer - maybe I feel DJing should be involved, a performance, rather than just looking like someone checking their emails on a laptop."

Review: "Lifetime" is the fourth album from Australian producer Deepchild. Emerging after almost three years, "Lifetime" delivers his most razor-sharp, engaging and sonically expansive work to date. Prepare to be surprised. It is an exceptionally mature dancefloor focussed montage. A synthesis of musical experience from Sydney to Berlin, Detroit, Chicago and Jamaica. Basic Channel's dub minimalism flirts with fragments of Dr Dre, King Tubby and Georgio Moroder, whilst Beyonce and Carl Craig drink cognac (and dance cheek to cheek) in the back room. The omnipresent Marvin Gaye appears to be discussing the politics of seduction with the boys from Kraftwerk, and if you listen closely you may just make out Peter Tosh humming a tune with Matthew Herbert, whilst Richie Hawtin mixes the drinks and reminisces about peak time at Tresor. Kodwo Eshun appears to be discussing architecture with one of the Parliament boys, but by the looks of things George Clinton just wants to get his freak on. This is a sonic space free from platitudes or club clichés; a melting pot of musical experience and history, edited with loving kindness and a razor-sharp tungsten blade.

Review: This album is not just a collage of various work periods but almost completely from one single production flow. One result of this remix collection is its cohesiveness but also its definite club affinity. Over the last years, Mathias has been DJing non-stop, travelling from Cologne to Istanbul via Basel and Moscow, Bilbao, Paris, Belgrade and back to Berlin. "RE:2" also reflects the ever continuing differentiating and refining of the various types of minimal, in Schaffhäuser's own interpretation.

Review: ADJD whispers a mysterious male vocal promisingly. Building a dark and subliminally sexy house atmosphere that has slowly morphed into ADJD's trademark, the two Stockholm-New York-based producers who got to know each other while selling records to scenesters back in the Nineties, got their gear together only a few years ago - under difficult circumstances as Alexi Delano had moved himself to New York. Nevertheless, they were finding enough time to get together for some exploding studio sessions full of ringing cell phones that culminate in heavy house workouts that ooze sex and mystery. Now, they are back hotter and more intense than ever - time to celebrate the sound evolution of ADJD!

Review: The mistress of melancholic driving club techno returns. MIA has produced a mature album - an extremely danceable trip through the abysses of human sensitivities. Like a water lily, the music glides along at the water surface, maybe virgin in its impression, but the roots reach down deeply into the darkness. There are nymphs, once died of a broken heart, now wandering through the nightly realm forever. This is music for the crowd in your heart.

This led to a musical style change with the sound becoming more electronic, less organic, and whole lot more fun. From there the night moved onto weekly parties at Club Underground in Ibiza, then relocating to DC10. "Superfreq Express" is delivered by Mr. C and his unmistakable mixing style. If this is a sign of things to come, then this label is set to be a leader in the field.
