Supra Opto Cassis EP
Cat: LMD 002. Rel: 05 Nov 07

Minimal/Tech House
Blue Blue So Electric Blue
Cassis
Review: Already played by Ricardo Villalobos, Magda, Richie Hawtin, Josh Wink, Loco Dice, Butane, Troy Pierce, Sammy Dee and more! Lick My Deck's second release come in the form of the "Supra Opto Cassis EP" by Montreal's Pheek. This is a multi layered funk station masterclass in how to make music. "Blue Blue So Electric Blue" is an intelligently constructed track that utilises the simplest ingredients with a looping display of percussive beats and bass which have been very effective on the dancefloor when tested by Ricardo Villalobos. "Cassis" is infectious and hypnotic, layering tripped out beats against a backdrop of pure funk.

En Legere Suspension
Review: After eight years of working, researching, and developing while touring, Jean-Patrice Remillard (aka Pheek) hatches "En Legere Suspension", a new album making it his sixth, appearing on his own imprint Archipel Musique. Pheek has received the attention and support (and friendship) of people like Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Magda, Josh Wink, Craig Richards, Sven Vath and Dan Bell to name a few.

Lonely Wolf (9:34)
Father (5:32)
The Logical Question To Come Is Yet To Be Defined (feat Debashis Sinha) (16:19)
Review: Canadian minimal standard-bearer Pheek is the fifth artist to sign up for The Untold Stories Protagonist series, and he's packing some of the crispest grooves he's laid down in some time. "Lonely Wolf" is everything a minimal house track should be, with a crackling, shuffling beat and layers of subtle orchestration building into a soul-stirring groover. "Father" however takes a more abstract route into off-kilter percussion and exotic found sounds specifically arranged to tickle the mind. That leaves it to "The Logical Question To Come Is Yet To Be Defined" to dominate the B-side in a 16-minute trip that moves through all manner of moods and moments.

Mystic Days
Shaman (feat Matt Hannafin)
Non-sense
Review: Minimal techno standard bearer since the heyday of the genre, Pheek is unflinching in his quest to explore the creative potential within reductionist approaches to music, and here he ups the ante on the experimental nature of his work. "Lava" ripples and whirrs with a spread of minute noises that seem to move with organic intuition, while "Mystic Days" seems to shear away the locomotion to fall in a more fragmented rhythm. "Non-Sense" is the more tangible cut on this lavish double pack, letting a discernible beat course its way through swathes of electronic noise and gently undulating chords.

Material Paths
Same Destination
Review: Ever surging forth in search of new pastures within minimal techno, Pheek now inaugurates the Only Material Matters imprint with a pair of richly detailed and typically complex productions that will have his followers feeling immensely satisfied. "Material Paths" has a tribal, slow release lilt to its rhythm, as a tumble of live percussion meets with computerized clicks and crackles and subtly unnerving pad tones hush out underneath. "Same Destination" takes on a less densely packed drum set and works in a few more found sound atmospherics, but still the mood is very much minimalist, letting every sound shine forth in an immaculate mix down.

Direkt - "Omnisphere" (8:25)
Heek & Kike Mayor P - "Sarandea" (7:21)
Minube & Andrey Djackonda - "Silk" (7:14)
Farid Odilbekov - "Mobile 5" (7:12)
Review: Brazil is not a label often associated with tech house but Oashi is slowly changing that. This third outing from the small but well formed label is a various artists affair that takes in everything from gritty tech to dreamier house. Direkt kicks off with 'Omnisphere' which is dubbed out and laced up with frazzled synths and Heek & Kike Mayor P's 'Sarandea' is a gentle and subversive goove with dreamy pads and lush samples. The flip side sinks into a smooth groover from Minube & Andrey Djackonda in the form of 'Silk' while Farid Odilbekov closes down with 'Mobile 5,' a nice leggy house workout.

Mikael Stavostrand - "Track 1"
Pheek - "Track 2"
Review: New split 10" on we are here and we're very happy to bring you one track each from none other than the Berlin residing Mitek label-owner Mikael Stavöstrand (Contexterrior, Adjunct etc), and Montreal's Pheek (M-nus, Archipel, Sushitech etc). Two lovely textured, obscure and very groovy tracks that has proved to work very well at the moment in clubs all over. The previous releases have had support by a wide array of DJs from across techno to house and minimal; people such as Frank Lorber, Mandy, Jennifer Cardini, Dominik Eulberg, Martin Landsky, Ellen Allien - the list goes on and on! - Also don't miss out on the offshoot 12" release by Agaric and Eidolon, "Don't Wake Up"!

Review: While Pheek may have been in operation for as long as anyone can remember within minimal house and techno, Cleymoore has been most productive more recently thanks to his Pluie/Noir label. Following on from last year's Seikou single on Xquisite, here Cleymoore and Pheek link up to deliver some densely packed, production rich jams that keep the spirit of mid-00s clicks and cuts alive. The beats themselves may be slender slices that carry the energy of the tracks, but it's all in the infinitesimal details in between that the true magic of this music comes alive.

Pheek - "Chaos Befriended"
Volta Cab - "Street Knowledge"
Jarz Polors - "Dvsy"
MD Wallholz - "Ein bisschen Ruhe"
Ztrl - "Vege"
Jonas Sella - "PA LA"
Franco Cinelli - "Overdubz"
Ivan Lopez - "Mentalspace"
Review: Steadily building up a prominent identity in the bustling minimal house and techno thoroughfare, The Untold Stories return with one of their signature various artist compilations to present some lesser known practitioners of the hypnotic groove. Jerome C gets a rugged angle on the swing to his beats on "An Intelligible Scrawl", while Volta Cab nods to a classic Tobias jam with "Street Knowledge". MD Wallholz's "Ein Bisschen Ruhe" is a shivering slice of experimental electro, and Jonas Sella brings an unhinged French flavour to proceedings, but truthfully every jam on this solidly packed release has its own distinct character that fits into the meandering tale the label is unfurling.

Speaking of, Pheek contributes the awesome cut 'Previews' here alongside equally devastating jams from Dario Zenker 'New Kids On Weed', Seph's 'Phound' and Motio & E Contact with 'Do You See'.

Anxiete En Elasto-O-Rama
Review: Strong, heady electrifying release showing Pheek at the top of his game pushing the psychedelia to new heights. From the post-apocalyptic shattered acidic fragments of "Orage Solaire" to the gooey, jittery ball of well articulated wilderness of "Ceci N'est Pas Mon Corps" to the freaky steamy deceptively gentle "5 AM (Little Surprise)" to the elastic, spherical, metallic sound of "Anxiete En Flasto-o-rama".
