Review: Designed with a dual purpose - setting the label's agenda for the year ahead and introducing new signings - Crosstown Rebels' SPIRITS series has long been a must-check source of dependable tech-house tracks. Naturally, there's plenty of highlights to be found across this sixth annual edition. Our current favourites including the throbbing, percussion-rich, big room tech-house excellence of 'The Vision' by Cameron Jack; the acid-fired heaviness of Lauren Lane's 'Fair Game', with its wobbly sub-bass and echoing Latin drum hits; the crackling, mind-mangling tech-house psychedelia of 'So Deep' by Cristina Lazic and Leia Contois; and the fiendishly bass-heavy tribal-tech wonder that is Inigo Vontier's accurately titled 'That Trippy Sound'.

Review: Following some great releases on top labels like Desolat, Saved Records, Kling Klong and Kaluki Musik, Chilean Francisco Allendes is back with 'What You Do' on Crosstown Rebels. A sweltering house number aimed squarely at the main room, its infectious vocal atop is perfect for getting those heads down on the dancefloor, something that the now Ibiza-based DJ/producer has been an expert at over the last years. Over on the flip, the inimitable Harry Romero takes up remix duties and gets deep, down and dirty as expected, followed by one more original by Allendes in the form of 'Maratone' - a trippy minimal/tech house cut more suited to the afterhours.

Review: Given his long-admired skills as a selector and DJ, any new mix CD from Craig Richards is a cause for celebration. His contribution to the Get Lost series from Crosstown Rebels is no different with the CD edition containing a mammoth 37 tracks across the two discs. Whilst it was near impossible for the label to include all these tracks on this accompanying triple LP edition, Crosstown Rebels should be commended for including some of the highlights of Richards two diverse mixes. As such you get some classic early '90s NJ Garage from Black Rascals sharing space with the Mancunian tropics of Ruf Dug, vintage STL, Lowlands electro from Parallax Corporation, classic Kenny Larkin and more.

Review: Al hail the return of the Aphrohead! Over twenty years on from Felix 'Da Housecat' Stallings first surfacing under the Aphrohead guise, the US production and DJ legend is set to explore the alter ego with a new album length adventure slate for release on Crosstown Rebels later in the year. Whilst full details of this sixth studio album from Aphrohead are still under wraps, the Crosstown crew have laid down a marker for what to expect in the shape of Grown Man Cry. One sided white labels are geared for the clubs and that's certainly the case here as Felix offers up a slab of no nonsense emotionally weighted house music that's an exercise in wringing the maximum impact from the minimum of elements. Stallings production expertise really comes to the fore here as subtle filtering is implemented over a relentlessly jacking 909 groove.

Review: On his new record for Crosstown Rebels, rising tech house trooper Russ Yallop creates the kind of sinister n' sexy electro-house-pop that has been setting alight the likes of Hot Natured and Visionquest, helped no end by an edgy vocal turn from Aimee Sophia. Huxley gets busy for a remix, bringing forth some brighter elements from the keys to the New Jersey swing, while the electro bassline gets swapped for some rude garage antics. There's a decidedly different dub version from Huxley as well that takes a moodier tone, and then original jam "How I Feel" rounds proceedings off with a bleep-inflected broody mover.

Review: The elaborately named Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs might not be the first name one would expect to mix the Lost series from Crosstown Rebels, but his forthcoming Lost IV does look promising, not least for the inclusion of "Lion, The Lion" a collaboration with the eponymous West Countryman Eats Everything. Wisely plucked from the forthcoming mix for 12" release here, Damian Lazarus and co. have also commissioned two very complementary remixes from 4Lux boss Gerd. Back to the original, and "Lion, The Lion" comes across like the second coming of fidget house and is apparently the results of two days recording at Eats Everything's studio HQ last December and has been eagerly awaited since it was unveiled on the producer's Essential Mix.

Review: Throughout his career, the wonderfully named Orlando Higginbottom has proved something of a chameleon, delivering productions under the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs moniker packed with party-friendly elements that defy easy categorization. The trend continued when Damian Lazarus surprising picked Higginbottom out to put together the fourth instalment of Crosstown Rebels Get Lost mix series. This sizeable triple LP lifts out a selection of highlights from that 70 minute mix for any budding TEED wannabes out there (head piece not included) It's a surprisingly left of centre selection too with the wonderful "Floo" from Jorge Velez's MMT Tapes series, the chilling oriental strings of Asa Hang & Junray's "Hana" and Richard H Kirk's "I Want More" not the type of music you'd expect on a Crosstown compilation.

Review: Since emerging with the slinky four tracker Changes last year, the London based producer and DJ Francesca Lombardo has become a fully fledged member of the Crosstown family, with this third release on Damian Lazarus's label arriving amidst news the fast-rising Rebel queen is working on her debut album for them. As with her previous efforts, "What To Do" really conveys Lombardo's growing talent as a song writer within the framework of electronic music. In The Stars
Review: Berlin based Cobblestone Jazzer Mathew Jonson precedes the release of a second solo LP, Her Blurry Eyes, for Crosstown Rebels with this two track 12" for Damian Lazarus' towering imprint. Jonson is no stranger to Crosstown, releasing numerous 12"s through them since his debut appearance in 2004, and his return with Automaton highlights the Canadian's penchant for intricate and nuanced beatwork. This is most apparent on the title track "Automaton" whose percussion is almost tribal in execution and augmented by some truly hypnotic weaving analogue lines. Complementing this, "In Th Stars" offers some insight into Jonson's more abstract and esoteric leanings, it being a fluttering journey through worming analogue textures and rippling percussion that's strangely reminiscent of an early Royksopp B Side.

Review: The rise of Jamie Jones over the past two years has been nothing short of meteoric. Now officially the world's number one DJ (according to readers of Resident Advisor, at least), Jones could record and release the sound of a car alarm and it would be hailed a "classic". Cynicism aside, the Crosstown Rebels regular has made some extremely high quality house over the years, as this collection of previously unreleased archive material so adroitly proves. Expect plenty of soft, touchy-feely material (including an excellent collaboration with Art Department) that offers plenty of thrills for fans of the Visionquest/Crosstown Rebels sound.

Just An Illusion (Appleblim Black Mirrorball mix)
Review: Crosstown Rebels excel themselves on this release, with the certified house hero MK and Bristol lynchpin Appleblim tasked with reimagining "Just An Illusion" one of the more infectious, floor appropriate tracks from Amirali's recent debut album In Time. The track has already been tweaked by Real Tone's Franck Roger but this twelve is the one, with MK opting for a moody yet sultry house direction, slipping Amirali's melancholic vocal over a trademark bassline dub groove complemented by plenty of those 90s snares, kicks and hi hats. In contrast, Appleblim continues his revelatory run of remixes (did you check those Crazy P ones? Goddamn!) with a more experimental approach that fills the expanses around stripped back, snapping percussive mainframe with a murky low end.

Review: We're more used to seeing Tiga in full-on electro mode but this time he's taken a shot at the techier side of the spectrum with his first release for the UK's Crosstown Rebels. Title track, "The Picture" is very much a surprise, where we see Tiga enter a thumping parade of raw-as-hell drums and masterfully executed bass lines - BIG! Subb-an takes care of remixing "Pleasure From The Bass" - actually the more electro-inclined of the two, adding some funky, late-night vocals to the groove.

Review: Canadian duo Art Department have all the ingredients of success at their disposal: experience, reputation and, most importantly, hype. With the latter in full effect right now, it's safe to say that The Drawing Board, their debut full length, is one of the most anticipated house sets of 2011. So is it any good? Certainly, those who've already fallen in love with their touchy-feely, melancholy take on house will enjoy it immensely. Like the work of guest Seth Troxler's Visionquest (and, to some extent, Benoit & Sergio), there's a distinct melodic warmth to Art Department's shuffling beats, woozy electronics and half-whispered vocals. It's this, more than anything, which makes The Drawing Board worthwhile listening.

Vibe Your Love (Zev's Southern Sunrise rework)
Review: ** Crosstown Repress ** Techno veteran Eric Estornel has really hit his house music stride as Maceo Plex, with a sweet little remix for Glimpse earlier this year on Crosstown augmented by Nico Jaar's treatment of Plex track "Gravy Train" which featured on the label's nifty Rebel Rave comp. Team Lazarus offer a tantalisingly good preview of what to expect from Maceo Plex's forthcoming album with "Vibe Your Love". In contrast to recent CTR output the track is resolutely warm, driven by heavily filtered piano melodies that echo beneath the organic groove with heavily processed vocal edits the preface to a vintage house vocal. The flipside remix from Wolf & Lamb's Zev sees chunky house beats augmented by shimmering chords and brassy key flourishes that work as the perfect appetiser to those dreamy vocals that arrive on top of an understated acid ripple to ride the track out.

Rock Me
Review: So Crosstown Rebels, how are you going to follow up one of this year's most anticipated and deservedly lauded releases in Art Department's "Without You"? What's that you say? By releasing something equally as good from yet more rising talent? That's correct - Crosstown Rebels could probably sign off 2010 off the back of the devilish release from Toronto's Kenny Glasgow and Johnny White but that's not Damien Lazarus' style. Instead we are introduced to the talents of Russ Yallop, who might be familiar to some as Rusty James (Mothership/Left Room). A Sider "I Can't Wait" is notable for the sneaky usage of Mary Jane Girls and a bassline throb every bit as menacing as "Without You". A series of intermittent breakdowns scattered through the track and the midpoint introduction of kaleidoscopic twilight synth twists add to the sensory delight. This is backed with the stab heavy disco house burn of "Rock Me", a track characterised by stuttering vocal hums and intricate drum programming.

Without You (extended 12" mix) (8:37)
Review: It's been pretty hard to escape the hoo-hah surrounding Art Department ever since YouTube footage surfaced of the dropping "Without You" at the Hot Natured DEMF party back in June. The Juno editorial branch is in complete agreement that such hype is totally justified on this debut release for Crosstown Rebels. "Vampire Night Club" sits across the A Side with a guest spot from Seth Troxler, er, vamping it up on vocals backed by some haunting harmonies from Art Department's Kenny Glasgow. It's the dynamic usage of infectiously dark bass patterns and intermittent synth stabs that help cement the eerie atmosphere that pervades the track. This sense of pulsing menace is transferred to the B Side brilliance of "Without You". Made for play in dark venues where the crunching beat, throbbing bassline and creeped out vocal refrain from Glasgow can reverberate around the walls and your cerebral cortex, "Without You" is destined to become a mainstay in record boxes for many months to come.

Your Style (Maya Jane Coles remix)
Review: Echoey claps sooth us into Crosstown Rebel's latest offering from Maceo Plex. Plex's Life Index album on Crosstown, released in January, garnered praise from industry heavyweights worldwide. An undeniably smokey and sensual vocal from Maceo himself holds no barriers as it breathes out "girl I love your style" in a sexual and repetitive moan. Rattling shakers rise up over the deliriously deep and gruff bass line as "Your Style" prowls itself into a sultry trip. On the flip, the much lauded star of 2010 Maya Jane Coles remixes an equally dark and low slung deep house version, chugging along with a slightly clickier edge that compliments Maceo's original flawlessly.

Review: After time spent whipping up singles for Moodmusic and My Best Friend amongst others, Maurice Aymard makes the leap to the long-player with a selection of jams that reflect his propensity for live instrumentation and thoroughly musical constructs within the disco-inflected realms of house music. As if Metro Area were played out by hand, tracks such as "Home" groove hard on plush live bass lines, poignant Rhodes chords and romantic lead synths. Gui Boratto turns up to chip in to "Colours & Drops" with its more prominent techy backbone, but that's offset by the non-dancefloor roll of "1994". It's a diverse album that provides the perfect platform for a skilled craftsman to explore, er, his craft.

Living The Life (Aba Therepy version)
Review: Kenny Glasgow & Jonny White aka Art Department came bounding into the spotlight with their huge hit "Without You" on Crosstown Rebels last year. Enlisting the vocal services of musical prodigy Seth Troxler on their second release, "Living the Life" is a smart move considering the massive popularity of Troxler right about now. Introduced with a warped and dark Troxler vocal, indecipherable and eerie, it leads into a sensual drum beat which is instantly captivating. Crisp claps and a mellow synth line are integrated bit by bit and once layered, the elements working together make for a downtempo delicacy. The ABA "Therapy Version" is equally alluring, dreamily extending the vocals and meandering smugly along. Whilst it doesn't have the smash and grab of "Without You", it falls effortlessly into a more mature and intriguing category. This is exactly what Art Department needed to do with their second release on CR, instantly diminishing any one hit wonder categorization.

Review: Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White have both enjoyed solo success over the years, but only recently together as their brainchild Art Department. After teasing us with last year's massive "Without You", they now release their debut album The Drawing Board courtesy of Crosstown Rebels. "Much Too Much" features melting lyrics originally written by Frankie Knuckles, Robert Owens and Satoshi Tomiie that are now crooned by Glasgow over a hypnotic and down tempo beat. "Tell Me Why" Parts I and II are again vocally dominated and layered over a simple yet captivating bass line that shuffles ever forward. Seth Troxler lends his deep and eerie vocal talents on "Vampire Nightclub" - a light and airy musical base that contrasts against Troxler's warped vocals. "The Excuse" -a dusky collection of electronic clicks and clacks leads to "In The Mood" on the D-side whose gorgeously old skool hip-hop style vocal showcase a welcome other side to the album.

Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White's "We Call Love" has been picked apart carefully put back together again by the legendary Balearic beardo DJ Harvey for a limited one sided, hand stamped, hand numbered white label. Review: The only artist album to be released on Crosstown Rebels, "Familia" was regarded by many as the electronic album of the year. The unique sound of "Familia" appealed to anyone with an appreciation of quality electronic music, and is frankly a work of genius. Crosstown Rebels is at the forefront of the new energy in international club culture. Artists include Kiki & Silversurfer, Jennifer Cardini, Blackstrobe, Ost & Kjex, DJ Koze, Hiem, Rob Mello and Luke Solomon. Pier, one of many cutting edge artists emerging from Chile, is no newcomer to making his own unique style of techno. This year has been his biggest year yet with new productions, a continuous world tour and an appearance this summer at Sven Väth's 'Cocoon' sessions at Amnesia, the club that proves you've really made it. "Hay Consuelo" is a haunting slab of spine-tingling, Latin inspired techno. The addition of the Spanish vocal by Macha gives the track a timeless and magical quality. "Instinct" is a new exclusive piece of work from Pier's fascinating mind. This is a theme in all of his productions; they work on different levels at different stages of the day/night. Samim is the choice of remixer for "Hay Consuelo" and the multi-talented Swiss producer supplies the perfect complement to the original to make this, once again, a very exciting Pier Bucci/Crosstown Rebels release.

Filled to bursting point with all the typical Jammy Jones production points - think bouncy groove, irresistible drops and hushed deviant vocals - "Moan & Groan" arrives just in time for the summer slog on the Croatian coastline. It's complemented by two remixes of "Tonight In Tokyo" - one of the secret weapons Jones included on last year's Crosstown Rebels album of sorts Tracks From The Crypt - from Breach and Cassius. Review: Late last year, Felix "Da Housecat" Stallings donned his long-discarded Aphrohead alias for the first time in 12 years. That single, the Mr G style loopy techno stomp of "Grown Men Cry", forms the centrepiece of Resurrection, Stallings' first album under the Aphrohead guise since 2002. It's a surprisingly mixed bag stylistically, variously doffing a cap to vintage, Derrick Carter style boompty ("Let's Prance"), locked-in tech-house ("Elevator (I'll Take The Stairs)", dense tribal grooves ("1King, 1Queen"), acid ("Medusa") and fluid, melodious deep house ("Come To Me"). It's a pretty stripped-back and no-nonsense affair throughout, with the emphasis firmly on robust dancefloor workouts.

"Vermillion" is a wonky and distinctly tribal 4/4 number with seductive pop vocals and a prominent indie feel to its groove. If you were already panicking about a lack of dancefloor debauchery then you needn't worry because there's a tight remix package: Agoria, Jamie Jones and Deniz Kurtel come through to save your dancing feet. Big EP!

Review: Fellow Danes Djuma Soundsystem and Yann Coppier team up with King Ayisoba on vocals for "Anyimu". King Ayisoba sings in Frafra, Twi and in English and is a big star in Ghana. This track is the kind of trippy and atmospheric slow burner that you could imagine label boss Damien Lazarus playing during the final hours of one of his legendary Burning Man sets. Who better to get in for a remix than Ibadan main man Jerome Sydenham for the high octane "Ibadan vocal dub" or the slightly more restrained "Ibadan Deepstrumental". The mysterious Johnny Aux lends a hand on the remix too giving the track a dusty and tunnelling deep techno remix, sounding like early Fred P, not bad!

Always On My Mind (Kornel Kovacs remix dub) (6:07)
Review: Brooklyn based producer Serge Devant aligns with Crosstown Rebels and gives us some seriously slinky tech house on the dark side with "Always On My Mind" featuring one seriously humming bassline, emotive strings and big vocals. Italy's Pirupa (who's done stuff previously on Drumcode and Rebellion) gives the track a progressive house style makeover reminiscent of Guy J or Guy Mantzur; don't worry, it's still dark! Stockholm based Studio Barnhus alumni Kornel Kovacs gives the track his rendition, which is a dusty and dreamy deep house jam that's just lovely and possibly our favourite on here. There's a dub version too for those of you less keen on the (in this case) pitch shifted and androgynous vocals.

In The (Last) Moment (Robag Ponk Pramen NB remix) (8:02)
Review: Barcelona-based tech house heroes Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito are back. This time for Damian Lazarus' esteemed Crosstown Rebels imprint with "In The (Last) Moment". The track is equally esoteric as it is atmospheric in the tradition of the label's new sound and perfect for drifting. The woozy, journey like aesthetic is only intensified by Georgia Lewis' hypnotising vocal efforts. On the lip we've got added dance floor drama and cerebral stimulus courtesy of the master himself Robag Wruhme; who as always turns in an emotive and bittersweet epic on "In The (Last) Moment (Robag Ponk Pramen NB remix)" complete with his trademarks: glitchy sound design, beautiful string arrangements and the usual Midas touch for pure deepness.

Review: Dutch hippie sort Satori is a regular on the international festival circuit, having taken his impressive live show everywhere from Germany's Fusion to Day Zero in Tulum. He's up next for Damian Lazarus' esteemed Crosstown Rebels imprint with "Imani's Dress" a moody and esoteric slow burner featuring hypnotic acoustic guitar notes soaring above woozy vocals, wonky synth leads and a tight groove. There's a couple of great remixes by two scene heroes: the first by the inimitable Matthew Dear who delivers an driving and adrenalised rendition, but our pick has definitely got to be Ewan Jansen's sharp and sexy groove therapy that's delivered on his remix, which also comes as a handy instrumental too.

Man O To (Pepe Bradock dub) (5:44)
Review: On his recent releases under the Nu alias, Rolf Fabian Laumer has giddily fused the smooth, clicking rhythms of minimalist tech-house with a range of global influences. The results have, by and large, been superb, sitting somewhere between sun-kissed warmth and haunting iciness. He's at it again on "Man O To", layering a drifting, chant-like vocal over a backing track that somehow joins the dots between cumbia, dub and tech-house. French maestro Pepe Bradock handles remix duties, first wrapping the vocal around a typically dusty, off-kilter house rhythm, before laying down a slightly tougher, stripped back Dub that's the EP's standout moment.

His sound is still evolving and his bizarre take on the new underground house sound is very exciting. A master of the groove and never afraid of a risk, his latest productions are arguably his finest work to date.

Review: The long running Crosstown Rebels label serves up a fourth fine volume of its 'Spirits' series and once again draws on a wide pool of talent. In a rare production outing for Pete Tong, he links with
Alex Kennon for 'Apache', a sleek tech roller that slowly but surely transform into a melodic monster. Eslewhere Irish techno talent Matador shows off his mastery of his machines as he lays down plenty of cosmic pads work on 'Vulture' and the always interesting Francesca Lombardo goes for a deeper, driving, bass heavy roller that makes you march. Another of the man heady and spiritual highs comes from Made By Pete and his mystic, tribal 'Harar.'

Review: House legend Seth Troxler links up with new teen upstart Jaden Thompson, paving the way for an intergenerational manner of music-making that should be much more the done thing than it is. 'Talking Walls' is a moving, snappy, electronic-bassline-funking madhouse of playful fun, throwing back to house tropes trailblazed by the likes of Paul Johnson or Kerri Chandler back in the day (the echoed-out acapella B side is a must-listen). Pree the dub too; nevermind walls, this one shakes floors too!

Review: If you were into house and techno around this time a decade ago, you surely wouldn't have been able to avoid Maceo Plex's acclaimed debut album Life Index. The Valencia-based, Miami native finally hit the big time after many years as an underground artist, with this impressive merging of minimal/tech house with disco/soul-funk influences that would go on to be constant throughout his work ever since. This worthy reissue as part of Record Store Day 2021 features all the hits that soundtracked a rather memorable 2011, such as the lo-slung rolling funk of 'Sleazy E', the druggy and sax-led euphoria of 'Silo' and the blissed-out summertime groove of 'Dexter's Flight'.

Review: Gorgon City take a break from their 2012-style donk house style a-la Jess Glynne or Clean Bandit, this time opting for a deeper mood while bringing superproducer Damian Lazarus and singer Leia Contois into their orbit. Dreamy and delirious, 'Start Over' opines for better times, with Contois wishing deeply for a memory-erasing do-over. On the B-side, Lazarus and City go Italo-trance, lending even washier lucidity to the whole song.

Review: The Crosstown label is now one of the elder statesmen in the scene but it still manages to serve up surprises. This new EP from Davi falls into that category as it explores dark, heads-down house and tech for the dead of night. 'Nosferatu' is heavy with the same sense of doom that you might be filled with should you meet the vampire from which the track takes its name. 'Mirage' is awash with pixelated cosmic melodies that light up the skies above a rolling house beat. With this EP Davi makes another good impression.
