Review: Half a century old and still kicking raw ass like it's still 1972, Alice Cooper's School's Out gets a deluxe reissue treatment befitting of such an iconic album. On this whopping triple-vinyl edition, Rhino have had the original album remastered so it's sounding better than ever, but of course there's heaps of bonus material to enjoy as well. You get the single versions of 'School's Out' and 'Gutter Cat vs. The Jets', an alternate version of 'Alma Mater' and an early demo of 'Elected'. On top of all that is a recording of the band's concert in Miami in 1972, recorded just before they stepped into the studio to lay down the album.

Review: Widely hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time, Joni Mitchell's Blue is one of those totemic releases which transcends musical divisions to land in the hearts of anyone it touches. From the sincerity of her lyricism to the fathoms-deep feeling in her voice, the fragile beauty of the melodic composition and the tender playing of the guitar and piano, it's quite simply perfect. It's an album which should be in every home, and now it's repressed by Rhino on heavyweight wax in a gatefold sleeve - the definitive way to experience such an important document of 20th century music.

Review: The gigs The Doors played at The Matrix in March 1967 are a seminal part of their mythology, given they were recorded when the band were yet to breakthrough beyond Southern California and were pretty much playing to an empty room. The idea of such a legendary band in such humble times is one thing, but crucially this three-night stint was captured in stunning quality by recording engineer Peter Abram. Between the stretch of their recently released debut and some of the future classics they would become adored for, not to mention some incendiary covers, this three-disc edition brings forth more of the material from Abram's coveted tapes, making this a must-grab for Doors devotees everywhere.

Review: Alive She Cried is The Doors' electrifying second live album from 1983, available for the first time on vinyl since its original release. The first live album to be released following the band's explosion in popularity after their incendiary song 'The End' was lucky enough to be featured in the timeless Ford-Coppola movie Apocalypse Now, Elektra Records were more than compelled to pursue the release of more Doors material; this one homes in on various concerts between 1968-70, spanning shows performed in New York, Boston, Detroit, LA and Copenhagen. This 40th anniversary reissue is on emerald vinyl and features 'Light My Fire (including Graveyard Poem)', 'Moonlight Drive', and 'Love Me Two Times', among other Doors hits and favourites.

Review: No one has ever been able to tell Kevin Rowland what to do, and many might have tried to talk him out of doing an album largely comprised of traditional Irish songs, not to mention backing up this decision by giving the title an up-yours title like this one. Yet they'd all have been wrong, as this triumphant work proves. After all, few but Rowland would have to chutzpah reinvent Joni Mitchell's 'Both Sides Now' in the country soul idiom on the tin with quite such heartwarming results on the same album as the 18th century Irish song 'Carrickfergus', only two highlights on a brass-balled collection that serves as testimony to one of music's most enduring mavericks.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped, but otherwise in perfect working order***

30 years ago in August, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery aka Janes Addiction put out their second album. It proved the most critically acclaimed and successful of all their work and in fact was their last for 13 years. Few other alternative rock albums have ever come close to the impact of the one. Fact fans will know, of course, the original record came with three different covers, and might also have read that the tortuous recording process behind the alum is what eventually lead to the group's demise.

The Alternate Rumours
The Alternate Rumours (180 gram vinyl LP)

Rock
Review: If Rumours, the eleventh studio album by British-American legends Fleetwood Mac, is heralded among the greatest records of the 1970s, or indeed the 20th Century, then any attempt to rethink its contents needs to be good. Luckily, we're talking about arguably the most accomplished shape-shifters music has ever seen, starting life as a U.K. blues duo and morphing - at times a little jarringly - through various lineups and eventually into hugely influential and commercially successful American pop-rock act.

Suffice to say the troupe manage to pull some excellent alternative versions out of the bag here, then. Granted, they might struggle to stick like the originals of 'Gold Dust Woman' or 'The Chain', but that's an unfair comparison. Those tracks have long-since cemented a place in pop culture. The variations here are quality through and through in their own right, though, which is nothing short of a triumph when you're dealing with untouchable material.

When Doves Cry (LP version) (5:56)
17 Days (The Rain Will Come Down, Then You Will Have 2 Choose. If U Believe Look 2 The Dawn & U Shall Never Lose) (3:56)
Review: Given that Prince Rogers Nelson was responsible for writing and recording some of the most brilliantly original music of the 1980s, it seems churlish to pick favourites. That said, there's no denying that "When Doves Cry" remains one of the Purple One's finest moments. This reissue of the original 1884 12" boasts the superior album version - an extended workout that begins with a burst of Hendrix-style guitar, makes more of the bustling electro rhythm and generally provides a more satisfying dancefloor experience - and original B-side "17 Days (The Rain Will Come Down, Then U Will Have to Choose. If U Believe Look 2 The Dawn & U Shall Never Lose)". The latter became a favoruite of fans and got regular airings in Prince's live shows up until his tragic death.

Review: Since 2019, Fleetwood Mac has used Record Store Day to deliver "alternate" versions of the band's most famous albums. These are comprised of demos, early recordings and alternative mixes from the period that have laid dormant in the archives for decades.
This box set - which weirdly drops just as the band's Christine McVie is widely mourned - brings together these 'alternative' albums - the bluesy 'Fleetwood Mac', gazillion-seller 'Rumours', the rambling and epic 'Tusk', 'Mirage' and 80s power-pop-goes-AOR masterpiece 'Tango In The Night' - alongside a disc of rare live recordings of various fan favourites. As you'd expect, many of the versions are either stripped-back, laidback or more acoustic, though there are some genuinely revelatory alternative arrangements -not least an even deeper, warmer and dream-like early take on 'Mystified' whose effects-laden drums are mesmerising.

He clocked up consecutive platinum-selling albums as well as five Top 40 hits such 'I'm Eighteen,' 'School's Out' and 'No More Mr. Nice Guy.' This reissue comes alongside a reissue of the 1972 album School's Out and has been newly remastered with the addition of rare recordings and previously unreleased live performances. This one topped out at #21 on the Billboard albums chart and featured hit singles such as 'Under My Wheels' and 'Be My Lover' as well as a prog-rock-inspired epic in the shape of 'Halo Of Flies.'

Review: This is a deluxe edition of the third studio album by the American rock band Little Feat, originally released in 1973. Considered one of their classics, it blends Southern rock, blues, country, and funk influences for a surreal concoction that could only be said to be the band's own. The deluxe edition here includes the original album remastered and recut from the original tapes, alongside previously unreleased studio outtakes and demos, and a complete unreleased live show from 1973.

Review: It's hard to believe there was a time when a band as culturally important as The Doors were still trying to make it, but even after their debut album came out in January 1967 there was a brief patch where they were still little known outside their stomping ground in LA. A couple of months later, they held a three-night stint at The Matrix in San Francisco playing to threadbare crowds, but luckily the sound engineer had the foresight to properly mic up and capture all of the performances and the recordings have since become a massive part of the band's legacy. As well as the classic tracks from the first album, and a few of their later hits, there are a generous dose of covers and obscurities which get a first-time airing thanks to this new expanded and authoritative five-LP edition, with the generous inclusion of an extra 7" with a hidden gem that will blow the minds of lifelong ardent fans, of which there are more than a few.

Review: Blu-Ray Audio Boxed Set Spotlights Four Of The Band's Essential Early Albums With Quadraphonic And High-Resolution Stereo Mixes Of Toulouse Street, The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, And Stampede.

The Doobie Brothers celebrate two major milestones this year as the band marks its 50th anniversary and its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November. The 50th Anniversary Tour that was also planned for this year has been rescheduled for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic (new tour dates below). This will be the first time that principal band members Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons and John McFee have toured together in more than 25 years.

Before the band is welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rhino will release a new boxed set that highlights some of the music that helped make the Doobie Brothers one of the most popular bands of its generation. THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO will feature quadraphonic mixes of Toulouse Street, The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and Stampede. The four Blu-ray audio discs come in replicas of the original vinyl record sleeves and are all packaged together in a clamshell box.

For this collection, all four albums have been mastered using the original four-track Quad mixes. The set includes both the quadraphonic and high-resolution stereo (19224 DTS-HD Master Audio) mixes for each album. To enjoy the Quadraphonic mix as intended, the Blu-ray audio discs should be played using Surround Sound.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO brings together four essential albums from the band's early days. It begins with the group's second album, Toulouse Street, which was released in July 1972. The record achieved platinum status and launched the group to stardom with the hits "Listen to The Music," "Rockin' Down the Highway" and "Jesus is Just Alright."

The following year, the band returned with The Captain & Me, which was certified double-platinum on the strength of hits "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove," as well as fan favorites "South City Midnight Lady" and "Without You." These back-to-back classic albums represent one of the greatest one-two vinyl punches of the 1970s. Many songs from the albums are still played every day on the radio, a testament to the timelessness of the music.

In 1974, the Doobie Brothers released the group's fourth album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. The record peaked at #4 on the albums chart and was certified double-platinum. It also featured the band's first #1 hit, "Black Water," which was originally released as the B-side to "Another Park, Another Sunday."

Stampede is the final studio album featured in THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO. Released in April 1975 and certified gold, it also peaked at #4 on the albums chart. It includes the Top 40 hits "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)" and "Sweet Maxine." Stampede would be The Doobie Brothers' last studio album with original singer/guitarist Tom Johnston until he re-joined the band in 1989.

Review: Originally released Stateside six weeks ago but now finally available in the UK, this deluxe vinyl reissue of Magic & Loss should be an essential purchase for all vinyl loving Loud Reed fans. The set itself remains one of Reed's most dynamic and well thought out solo sets, with his usual grizzly guitars and even grizzlier vocals being toned down in favour of half-sung, half-spoken monologues, lighter arrangements, and occasional bluesy touches. This time round the album has been remastered, pressed to heavyweight vinyl, and stretched across three sides of wax (the fourth side features a rather fetching etching). There's also a tidy new insert. Yes, it costs a bit more than a regular gatefold reissue, but the extras are worth it.

Review: Country swampers Little Feat reissue their lesser-known album 'Live At Ultra-Sonic Studios'. A live album performed for a small, intimate assembled studio audience, this recording finds them live at Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, NY in 1974. Mastered directly from the original pre-broadcast tapes, this one is a heads' introduction to the band - for the seasoned country rock fan not shy of a raw old live album now and again.

Review: Combining rock & roll, blues, country, rhythm & blues, and jazz, Little Feat may not be as familiar as many of America's other great guitar groups, but their impact and influence cannot be understated. Take the 1974 Rolling Stone magazine interview with Jimmy Page, for example. A true rock legend, he cited this lot as his favourite band bar none, which tells you everything there is to know. The rock and roll band's rock and roll band, or something like that, this recording was captured during Little Feat's undisputed heyday, five years before founder, lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lowell George collapsed in a hotel room and died from a heart attack, leaving other members to disband and some to reform nine years later. It's electrifying stuff, packed with ideas and imagination, elements of honky tonk, swamp, and late-night barroom whisky chugging tones, marking the aforementioned Page out as a man of discerning taste.

Review: Swedish pop rock duo Roxette were one of the country's breakout acts in the genre. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of their third album 'Joyride', Rhino Records have seen to a due repress in a plethora of formats, including single LP, 4xLP, and even a limited orange marble vinyl version. Remembering the proto-balearic ballad-belters' monumental rise to number 1 on the Billboard 100 chart in May 1991, this album initially sold more than 11 million copies, setting a record previously not achieved by any other Scandinavian act. This version, however, also adds a whopping 35 new and unreleased bonus tracks; check out the night-riding, cutthroat bit that is 'Hotblooded', which was initially intended to take the place of 'Joyride' as the album's lead single.

Alive Cooper's 1971 classic Killer was his fourth studio album during a truly unstoppable period for the Detroit rocker.

Review: Years before anyone had ever heard of CBGB, Max's was *the* place in New York City to see cutting-edge rock acts (and mingle with Manhattan scenesters). Near the top of that list was The Velvet Underground, whose final show with bandleader Lou Reed (until a brief 90s reunion) is documented on the live album Live At Max's Kansas City. The quartet mixed such older favorites as 'I'll Be Your Mirror,' 'Femme Fatale' and 'I'm Waiting For The Man', with new songs like 'Sweet Jane' and 'New Age' from their soon-to-be-released Loaded, with plenty of venue atmosphere heard throughout (there is an audible conversation in which Jim Carroll hits up an audience member for pills). Rhino's Expanded & Remastered Edition of the seminal collection includes both sets performed by band that night in their entirety.

Set The Twilight Reeling (5:06)
Review: Remarkably, it's 25 years since the release of Lou Reed's seventeenth solo album, Set the Twilight Reeling. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Reed has decided to offer-up a fresh vinyl edition, this time on audiophile-friendly heavy wax with an accompanying booklet. To aid sound quality, the album has now been stretched over three sides of vinyl, with the fourth featuring an etched image of the album's artwork. It's a beautifully presented reissue all told, though it's the quality of the music - typically fuzzy, lo-fi and dominated by the twin attractions of Reed's proto-punk guitars and weather-worn vocals - that impresses most. While not one of the most celebrated sets in Reed's epic catalogue, Set The Twilight Reeling is still a hugely impressive and involving album.
