Review: This special 180g, peach-coloured version of Sign O' The Times is a faithful reproduction of the original, but there is also a super expanded reissue due that unveils a real wealth of unheard songs that are sure to send fans wild. That said, the original from 1987 is already classed as a masterpiece amongst many fans of The Purple One. As well as the well known singles, it serves up cold minimal funk, party jams, musings on the bleak realism of life and all manner of impossible fusion of jazz, soul, rock, pop, synth and gospel that only this most special of artists could have pulled off.

Mummy Calls - "Beauty Has Her Way" (3:56)
Thomas Newman - "To The Shock Of Miss Louise" (1:25)
Review: It's a good thing everyone has seen the seminal slice of 1980s pop culture that is The Lost Boys, because anyone who hadn't would not deserve to go anywhere near the movie's nostalgia-drenched soundtrack. A collection of tracks that perfectly scored a film about teenagers taking on a community of vampires in a small beach town, you can't listen to any of this without picturing one of the most iconic horror comedies of a generation.

Needless to say, then, the music is hardly subtle stuff, although it's not all as brash as the INXS and Jimmy Barnes barroom rock 'n roll riot, 'Good Times', or the sex-soaked saxophone pop rock of Tim Cappelo's 'I Still Believe'. Counterculture, which the flick tried to celebrate albeit in a big studio kind of way, is represented through outsider anthems like 'People Are Strange' by Echo & The Bunnymen, and Thomas Newman's Wurlitzer organ, big band orgy 'To The Shock of Miss Louise'.

Review: 30 years ago in August, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery aka Janes Addiction put out their second album. It proved the most critically acclaimed and successful of all their work and in fact was their last for 13 years. Few other alternative rock albums have ever come close to the impact of the one. Fact fans will know, of course, the original record came with three different covers, and might also have read that the tortuous recording process behind the album is what eventually lead to the group's demise.

Review: Originally released Stateside six weeks ago but now finally available in the UK, this deluxe vinyl reissue of Magic & Loss should be an essential purchase for all vinyl loving Loud Reed fans. The set itself remains one of Reed's most dynamic and well thought out solo sets, with his usual grizzly guitars and even grizzlier vocals being toned down in favour of half-sung, half-spoken monologues, lighter arrangements, and occasional bluesy touches. This time round the album has been remastered, pressed to heavyweight vinyl, and stretched across three sides of wax (the fourth side features a rather fetching etching). There's also a tidy new insert. Yes, it costs a bit more than a regular gatefold reissue, but the extras are worth it.

Review: One of the greatest house albums of all time is 20 this year. To mark the occasion the legendary French producer behind it - Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain - has selected a sympathetic team of expert remixes to add their own spin to the still classic source material. Atjazz is the perfect man to open up thanks to his deep, lounge and of course jazzy house style. Osunlade then brings his shamanistic sounds to 'Sure Thing' and it glows as a result with Ron Trent later tackling the anthemic 'Rose Rouge' and slowing it down to a lush jazz dance. With DJ Deep, Nightmares On Wax and more also featuring, this is a must cop.

Review: Swedish pop rock duo Roxette were one of the country's breakout acts in the genre. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of their third album 'Joyride', Rhino Records have seen to a due repress in a plethora of formats, including single LP, 4xLP, and even a limited orange marble vinyl version. Remembering the proto-balearic ballad-belters' monumental rise to number 1 on the Billboard 100 chart in May 1991, this album initially sold more than 11 million copies, setting a record previously not achieved by any other Scandinavian act. This version, however, also adds a whopping 35 new and unreleased bonus tracks; check out the night-riding, cutthroat bit that is 'Hotblooded', which was initially intended to take the place of 'Joyride' as the album's lead single.

Review: As an ode to the upcoming remake of David Lynch's infamous Twin Peaks, there is a flurry of Angelo Badalamenti reissues at the moment. In fact, both this original soundtrack, which is the official music as heard in the 1992 film, and the Fire Walk With Me spin-off have both resurfaced as reissues this week. Unsurprisingly, we recommend for you to snap up both because they have been something of a rarity over the last 10 years. Timeless and iconic from start to finish, this soundtrack is not for the faint of heart, and will likely stir some feelings upon initial listen. This will be all the more palpable if you were shocked and eternally intrigued by the movie. We were, of course, and we absolutely cannot wait for the new series either!

Review: Warner Bros Motion Picture Sparkle has an essential soundtrack, all thanks to the work of two soul legends in Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield. In the film itself, it was the movie's main stars Irene Cara and Lonette McKee who mostly sang the tunes but this recording features the Queen of Soul Aretha singing them at Curtis's Curtom studio in Chicago. He composed and produced all the tunes and here they are pressed onto sealer vinyl for the first time since they were first released. It's a feel good selection whether or not you have seen the film.

It is the first repress since original rase in 1991 and Selections from the motion picture include one of Miles Davis' final filmed performances. There was a huge number of personnel involved in the album, with everything from woodwind to French horn, keys, bass and trumpet to sax, drums and percussion all involved in making it a rich tapestry of stylish and evocative jazz.

Review: 21 years ago, Lil K.I.M. debuted at the number four position point on the Billboard Chart with her hugely commercially successful and certified Platinum album The Notorious K.I.M. Mixing up all the hallmarks of hip hop - sex, guns, drugs, and cash - with her own vulnerability, it makes for a record filled with highs and lows, hard beats and more tender tunes. The production - this time without the help of Notorious B.I.G. who made her previous one so hot - is still lush and filled with smart samples.

Review: The Sound Of Music had a long-lasting impact, and one of its cornerstones was 'My Favourite Things', later covered by trumpeter-visionary John Coltrane. Coltrane's version - the lead track from the album of the same name - helped cement the song's cultural standing, topping the charts in several countries. Three other tracks appear on the album in mono; Cole Porter's 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye', and two standards from the Gershwin twins on the B side. This new reissue by Rhino, however, has both stereo and mono, along with new liner notes: we're blown away by this light-hearted trumpet masterpiece.

Review: Some of the finest soul albums of all time are not studio sets, but rather live recordings that capture the energy of the greats at the peak of their powers. Aretha Franklin's Oh My Oh My: Aretha Live in Philly 1972 is one such example. Backed by a band of hugely talented musicians, the two-hour concert recording sees the undisputed Queen of Soul deliver spine-tingling recordings of stone-cold classics ('Rocksteady', 'Respect', 'Oh Me Oh My', 'Spanish Harlem' and so on) interspersed with some genuinely brilliant cover versions. The album was first released on CD way back in 2007, but this marks its' belated and much deserved release on vinyl. In a word: essential.

Review: Triple J Live at the Wireless is a recording of The Ramones gig at the Wireless Capitol Theatre, Sydney, Australia, July 8, 1980. It was broadcast on the radio back then and has never officially made it on to vinyl until now. The legendary NYC punk rockers played 23 tunes, many of which are super rare tunes that they never played again on this tour. For this Record Store Day it gets pressed up to 180g vinyl and limited to 13000 copies worldwide. Raw and visceral, it captures the band at their most abrasive best and is a real timewarp back to their (gabba gabba) hey-day.

Pressed to striking gold-coloured vinyl, it contains the band's most celebrated moments - the fiery funk-soul brilliance of 'Me & Baby Brother', the decidedly psychedelic and low-slung 'Low Rider', the Hammond-heavy 'The World is a Ghetto' and reggae-soul hit 'Why Can't We Be Friends' - as well as lesser-celebrated but no less impressive gems such as 'The Cisco Kid', the exotic 'Gypsy Man' and the harmonica-toting brilliance of 'Southern Part of Texas'. In other words, it ticks all the right boxes and contains some genuinely killer cuts.

It was the fourth of the band's albums and was related back in 1984. It reached number four on the UK Albums Chart thanks to singles like 'Silver', 'Seven Seas' and personal favourite 'The Killing Moon.' The album got the band back to the top of their game after the rather less than warm reception to previous album Porcupine the year before thanks to its new found romantic sweetness and the band's bittersweet melodies.

Review: Combining rock & roll, blues, country, rhythm & blues, and jazz, Little Feat may not be as familiar as many of America's other great guitar groups, but their impact and influence cannot be understated. Take the 1974 Rolling Stone magazine interview with Jimmy Page, for example. A true rock legend, he cited this lot as his favourite band bar none, which tells you everything there is to know. The rock and roll band's rock and roll band, or something like that, this recording was captured during Little Feat's undisputed heyday, five years before founder, lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Lowell George collapsed in a hotel room and died from a heart attack, leaving other members to disband and some to reform nine years later. It's electrifying stuff, packed with ideas and imagination, elements of honky tonk, swamp, and late-night barroom whisky chugging tones, marking the aforementioned Page out as a man of discerning taste.

Review: Angelo Badalamenti is to noir thrillers what Ennio Morricone is to the spaghetti Western scene. The Italo-American composer has been a pivotal part of the Hollywood soundtrack scene since the 70s and, among many cult-like figures, he's collaborated extensively with the great David Lynch on projects such as Blue Velvet and, of course, the present Twin Peaks, a film which has reached a God-like status over the last two decades. The music from the motion picture is as vivid and dream-like as the film itself; Badalalementi immerses you in a world of Neo-gothic trance and bizarre, fairy-like dances that instantly recall the movie's infamous dance scene concerning two horses. What is most notable about it is his use of subtle jazz nuances and the man's pioneering downtempo style. NB: this particular release, Fire Walk With Me, features additional music and acts as a companion to the official soundtrack as heard in the movie. What a soundtrack. Totally essential.

Review: Hans Zimmer is unquestionably one of the greatest composers of modern times. More specifically, he's perhaps the greatest living film composer, having scored more movies than we could ever hope to list here. Recent credits including the much-hyped and long-anticipated Dune redo, and Denis Villeneuve's rightly celebrated sci-fi epic, Blade Runner 2049.

As you guessed from this web page, The Dark Knight is another title he put his name to, all the way back in 2008. Christopher Nolan's second Batman instalment, arguably the finest in the history of the franchise, really needed something rooted in menacing, unsettling atmospherics, with rousing moments capable of restoring hope even against some near-impossible odds. He did just that, as this evocative powerhouse of a classical album proves. Not exactly easy listening, prepare to be moved in more ways than one.

Review: Decades after he died, pioneering rapper Christopher Wallace aka Biggie aka B.I.G remains a hip hop giant, not least for us here at Juno HQ. He had the flow, the character, the lyrics, and showed all of it on his masterclass album The Notorious BIG. It is now getting a well deserved reissue on double vinyl, with all the original tunes included. There are uber-hits like the ubiquitous 'Juicy', tracks that make astute social commentaries about the black experience such as 'Everyday Struggle' and then some darn right killer grooves like 'One More Chance' and 'Big Poppa.' RIP to the greatest to ever do it.

Review: History of Hostility is an album that amalgamates tracks from, at the time, American rock gods Pantera's previous five studio albums. It originally landed back in 2015 and to this day is a superb a nine-track collection that really does offer the best possible overview, or primer, of the band's sound. All points of their career are well covered in the selections with and well balanced choice of tracks from Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display Of Power, Far Beyond Driven, The Great Southern Trendkill, and Reinventing the Steel. A real metal essential for fans old and new.

Review: Far from being a band trapped in a nostalgic cul-de-sac redolent of their '90s origins, the return of Suede to the fray that began with 2010's reformation and continued with 2013's 'Bloodsports' has proven the band to be possessed of a chemistry and emotional heft that renders them as powerful now as ever they were. 'Night Thoughts' may be a less melodramatic and slightly more mature band dealing with the pressures of parenthood and the vagaries of modern life more than the youthful melodrama of yore, yet it's rich with melody, poise and melancholy enough to underline Suede's status as a veritable national treasure.

Well, it is known for the classics "Halcyon (On & On)" and "Lush" and the brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll are not just UK rave legends but pioneers of electronica that is for sure. Named after Greater London's orbital motorway, the M25, which was ground zero for the rave scene of the late eighties. This album is as seminal as it gets and a true zeitgeist of a moment in electronic music's history. Re-issues don't come much better than this!

It follows Bloodsport and Night Thoughts of 2013 and 2016 respectively, with this effort drawing on new adventures in field recordings, spoken word elements and choir. Romanticism and classical are abound too, like the dire classic that is "The Invisibles", helping bring the album to a reflective end, while others like "Life Is Golden" tenderly sways in waves of emotional support and melancholy. It is an cinematic listen through and through, with the Blair Witch beginnings of "Don't Be Afraid If Nobody Loves You" just the start.

Review: Time marches relentlessly on as does the immortal sound of iconic Manchester band Joy Division. At the heart of Unknown Pleasures was the alarming vocal talent of Ian Curtis. His alien wails, echoed expressionistic vistas of urban alienation over No Wave tribal beats and Gothic guitar impressions. And despite the breathtaking intensity of the angular acid comedown "She's Lost Control", the soaringly depraved detachment of "New Dawn Fades" and the proto-slowcore "Candidate", opening track "Disorder" remained the piece years ahead of its time and most immediately enduring. This anniversary record arrives almost forty years to the day after it was originally released, splashed out on 180g ruby red vinyl with an alternative white sleeve to resemble the original and legendary cover design. Unquestionably authentic, Unknown Pleasures was a vision so uncompromising and haunting that each track was worth its length. This commemorative reissue, then, continues the celebration of one of the most important albums of our time as well as highlighting the record as a landmark in music-design crossover history.

Punk/Hardcore
Review: Definitely one for the heads, The Ramones record It's Alive is probably one of the best live albums ever released in the history of releasing live albums. A veritable AC/DC at Donnington (for the third time), only for punk rather than stadium heavy metal. Or at least that's our not-so humble opinion.

It's Alive was a sprawling, mind-bendingly expansive chapter in the iconic New York band's history, spanning no less than 28 tracks and two discs, although its genius is in the live emphasis. Songs like 'California Sun', 'Commando', and 'I Wanna Be Well' take on new, feverish urgency and rebellious swagger. Captured at a show in London on New Year's Eve in 1977, this new release is the counterpoint. As recorded at Victoria Hall, Stoke-On-Trent on 29th December 1977, It's Alive II is yet another time capsule showing off the raw energy and talent of this rightly revered outfit in their prime.

The soundtrack, like any good film, played a huge part in making the atmosphere of the movie so special. Now you can own it once more across two lovely ice blue slabs of wax. From the ambient of Brian Eno to the sample heavy sounds of Moby via classical, jazz fusion, electronica, alternative rock and so much more, it is a broad yet compelling listen.

Yet they'd all have been wrong, as this triumphant work proves. After all, few but Rowland would have to chutzpah reinvent Joni Mitchell's 'Both Sides Now' in the country soul idiom on the tin with quite such heartwarming results on the same album as the 18th century Irish song 'Carrickfergus', only two highlights on a brass-balled collection that serves as testimony to one of music's most enduring mavericks.

Review: "Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo / Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo / Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo..." Nobody could accuse Third Eye Blind of poetic metaphors on the smash hit 'Semi-Charmed Life', lead single from this, their 1997 self-titled debut, but we can all reflect on the fact the song has everything necessary stick to your mind like glue, and defines an age that we can rightly feel longing towards.

The late-1990s were, upon reflection and in comparison with today, lacking in cynicism and very much styled with hearts-on-sleeves. Even if back then we thought we were defined by skepticism. Third Eye Blind's take on post-grunge alternative rock kind of epitomises this - not an outright rejection of commercialised music, yet anything but throwaway.

From the sincerity of her lyricism to the fathoms-deep feeling in her voice, the fragile beauty of the melodic composition and the tender playing of the guitar and piano, it's quite simply perfect. Tori Amos' debut album, which finally saw the light of day in 1992, reaching 14 in the UK long form charts at a time when competition in the Top anything was ridiculously fierce, the record stands up very well on its own, trapped in your own listening capsule. More so, it marked the arrival of a truly unique voice who would go on to inspire a bunch of alt-pop sirens.
Of course, the finished article garnered praise from across the critical board, proving that what label executives don't know is often what the rest of us do - originality has far more longevity than a guaranteed number one. Producing timeless singles like 'Silent All These Years', 'China', 'Winter', and, of course, 'Crucify', it's a joy to hear again.

Review: Just as indie bands today tend to juggle membership of multiple outfits, shoegaze bands in the '90s were on the just the same wavelength. Luna, for example, received most of its initial attention thanks to Dean Wareham of Galaxie 500's involvement - now backed by new friends Stanley Demeski and Justin Harwood. But music always defies the static expectations of the press. Lunapark, first released in 1992, is a happy opiate of an LP, contrasting to Galaxie's moody, unfiltered aesthetic. With its sound palette largely immaculate, and its crunching guitar chord progressions influenced by blues and Americana - this album could be said to be an ode to overcoming, and/or basking in, addiction.

Review: The music of Joni Mitchell will never go out of fashion and so it is that much of it is in the middle of a big reissue run. Joni's voice and songwriting has rarely ever been topped by anyone in any genre, let alone the folk and Americana worlds she is best known in. Song To A Seagull is one of many long player testaments to that and was a remarkable debut in 1968 which soon marked her out in a class of one. The album is known for having been mixing poorly the first time around so has been sharpened up for this reissue meaning both sides of the record - labeled 'I Came to the City' and 'Out of the City and Down to the Seaside' - sound superb.

Review: Nitin Sawhney is an award winning writer, composer and producer and this return to the album format marks his most commercial work to date. It is a record that he clearly had fun making as it is packed with a host of top collaborations with his friends and peers. He says the album is a love letter to who we all are and in accompanying notes he goes into how the world is now so full of opinions and strong judgements that we are prone to forget the human connection between us all. "With this album, I'm inviting some of my favourite international friends and artists into a celebration of their own identities in a single place of sonic safety and honesty. I am working and collaborating with artists who are proud of who they are and whose work is defined by that pride." The resulting sonic collage is a fine cultural mix and great reminder of some important values.

Hans Zimmer is unquestionably one of the greatest composers of modern times.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight tear and creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Decades after he died, pioneering rapper Christopher Wallace aka Biggie aka B.I.G remains a hip hop giant, not least for us here at Juno HQ.

Review: Faith Evans released her Keep The Faith album, one of the three platinum-certified records she put out between 1995 and 2001, just 12 months after losing her then-husband Notorious BIG. It arrived on Bad Boy Records and was almost entirely written and produced by Evans herself. It was a highlight of the 90s soul-pop era with top ten singles including 'All Night Long' and 'Love Like This.' Evans brought plenty of raw pain to her vocal deliveries even though on the surface the commercial r&b tunes are easy to access. It's a heartfelt homage to her late husband that is just as touching today.

Review: Following on from the release of their Funky Divas album, which was a true favourite of the 1990s, back in April, seminal girl group En Vogue now have their best bits assembled on Now Playing, a new album via Rhino. The group was the brainchild of Oakland-based songwriter-producer duo Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy and was noted for having all four members taking turns to be the lead singers. Their lush harmonies resonate to this day and these original recordings remind of their chart-topping, MTV-ruling glory. They are a magical bend of seductive, soulful vocals with funky beats and plenty of attitude. All hail En Vogue!

Review: A whole host of superb Joni Mitchell albums are in the process of being reissued and Clouds is one of them. For many, this is one of the best LPs Joni ever recorded and the stats back that up - it is BPI certified gold and it also won a Grammy in 1969 for Best Folk Performance. Join went on to win another nine such awards after Clouds, which came on May 1, 1969 and features the iconic self-portrait on its cover. Alongside one of Joni's best-known songs on 'Both Sides, Now,' other gems included are the delightful 'Chelsea Morning' and 'The Fiddle and the Drum'.

Review: Jamaican reggae and dancehall star Sean Paul did a lot to popularise the genre in the UK and US way before the current wave of artists who dominate. Dusty Rock is his seance album from back in November 2022 and it spawned plenty of chart-climbing singles that helped it, and Paul, go on to become a worldwide phenomenon. Of course, the standout single that still gets plenty of hammer is 'Gimme The Light' while 'Like Glue,' 'I'm Still In Love With You' and 'Get Busy' are all bangers, too, on a record full of big hooks, fresh rhythms and big energy.

Review: The ninth studio album by the Grateful Dead, Terrapin Station came after a two-year hiatus by the band, who afterward returned to live touring and high-concept jazz-rocking. Something of an achievement in defining the more mathematic elements of prog at the time, several of the songs heard across the album deal in time signatures less common to the Westernized ear, with perhaps the most enduring of them all, 'Estimated Prophet', having been recorded in septuple time. Perhaps mirroring this sense of rhythmic ambition verging on megalomaniac grandeur, the album, seemingly springing forth from this central song, deals throughout with themes of false-prophetic grandiosity - cultic self-aggrandisement - that seemed to emanate from California and the West Coast at the time, especially in the immediate aftermath of the counterculture and in the more musical annals of history in the then-unfurling latter half of the 20th Century.

Review: Rhino recently acquired the worldwide rights to The Beat's catalogue, and is marking the beginning of this exciting partnership with the release of an expanded version of the influential ska group's 1980 debut, I Just Can't Stop It. A fixture of ska and two-tone in their day, The Beat laid down an infectious toe-tapper with I Just Can't Stop It, imbuing the natural compulsion to dance with the hidden materiality of class struggle; with deeply socially charged lyrics skirting over the jubilant instrumental likes of 'Best Friend', 'Mirror In The Bathroom' and 'Twist And Crawl', to contrasting but convincing effect. This acclaimed fixture of British ska comes reissued as a 2-LP set on magenta vinyl, following up the RSD crystal clear edition released earlier in 2023.

Review: Alive She Cried is The Doors' electrifying second live album from 1983, available for the first time on vinyl since its original release. The first live album to be released following the band's explosion in popularity after their incendiary song 'The End' was lucky enough to be featured in the timeless Ford-Coppola movie Apocalypse Now, Elektra Records were more than compelled to pursue the release of more Doors material; this one homes in on various concerts between 1968-70, spanning shows performed in New York, Boston, Detroit, LA and Copenhagen. This 40th anniversary reissue is on emerald vinyl and features 'Light My Fire (including Graveyard Poem)', 'Moonlight Drive', and 'Love Me Two Times', among other Doors hits and favourites.
