Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped, but otherwise in perfect working order***


30 years ago in August, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery aka Janes Addiction put out their second album. It proved the most critically acclaimed and successful of all their work and in fact was their last for 13 years. Few other alternative rock albums have ever come close to the impact of the one. Fact fans will know, of course, the original record came with three different covers, and might also have read that the tortuous recording process behind the alum is what eventually lead to the group's demise.

Review: Jazz legends Miles Davis and Michel LeGrand composed the soundtrack to Dingo 30 years ago, which is why this anniversary edition is now bing served up by Rhino on heavyweight red vinyl. It is the first repress since original rase in 1991 and Selections from the motion picture include one of Miles Davis' final filmed performances. There was a huge number of personnel involved in the album, with everything from woodwind to French horn, keys, bass and trumpet to sax, drums and percussion all involved in making it a rich tapestry of stylish and evocative jazz.

70 years in the entertainment industry, 80 Grammy Award nominations (and 28 wins), joint-first African American to be given a nod at the Academy Awards for Best Original Song (alongside writing partner Bob Russell), and the first African American to be made musical director and conductor of those Oscar ceremonies. Even uttering the name Quincy Jones fills the soul with reverence, not least as he's one of the only people we know of who managed to attend their own memorial service, following a life-threatening brain aneurysm in 1974.



Suffice to say, he recovered, and would continue to write scores for the silver screen for another decade or so, albeit with far less prolific output. Dollars arrived a couple of years before that game-changing medical emergency, and the soundtrack is very much Jones. Packed with jazz, soul, rhythm & blues, rock 'n' roll, and funk, each genre is realised in a way that makes the songs feel authentic and brand new.

Review: Originally released in 1971, Morning Of The Earth is a touchstone in the surf film category, following surfers in Australia questing for the perfect wave when the sport was still a niche culture and places like Bali hadn't been exposed to tourism. The soundtrack fed into the overall impression of surf as a kindred spirit of hippie culture, with G. Wayne Thomas and others writing delicate folk rock pieces which matched the dreamy Super 8 footage. 50 years since its release, the soundtrack is getting a picture disc reissue on Rhino with all the original songs included.

Review: This reissue of Canadian country pop sensation K.D. Lang's 'All You Can Eat' sheds a historical light on the album's hurtful, frank themes of social comparison, consumer culture and daydreaming. For fans of divinely smooth, clean and romantic love songs in the post-country continuum, this 2021 version is pressed onto a special 180-gram orange and yellow coloured vinyl run. Produced with longrtime collaborator and guitarist Ben Mink, we're reminded that this is one of the cleanest sounding albums we've ever heard, blending a stage-ready musicality with Lang's unwaveringly perfect voice - choice moods include the chromatic 'You're OK' and the popping ethereum of 'Infinite And Unforeseen'.
