The original album, which saw the by then veteran psychedelic rock band present a more accessible, radio-friendly sound informed as much by trip-hop, 'top 40' pop and jangly dream-pop as psychedelia and alt rock, is presented in re-mastered form and comes backed with no less than five CDs of additional material recorded in the period. That means a mixture of demos, B-sides, remixes, live radio performances and, on discs five and six, two almost complete live performances. For fans of the band, it's a genuine must have - almost the greatest Christmas present you could give them.

Review: Given that Prince Rogers Nelson was responsible for writing and recording some of the most brilliantly original music of the 1980s, it seems churlish to pick favourites. That said, there's no denying that "When Doves Cry" remains one of the Purple One's finest moments. This reissue of the original 1884 12" boasts the superior album version - an extended workout that begins with a burst of Hendrix-style guitar, makes more of the bustling electro rhythm and generally provides a more satisfying dancefloor experience - and original B-side "17 Days (The Rain Will Come Down, Then U Will Have to Choose. If U Believe Look 2 The Dawn & U Shall Never Lose)". The latter became a favoruite of fans and got regular airings in Prince's live shows up until his tragic death.

Review: Time marches relentlessly on as does the immortal sound of iconic Manchester band Joy Division. At the heart of Unknown Pleasures was the alarming vocal talent of Ian Curtis. His alien wails, echoed expressionistic vistas of urban alienation over No Wave tribal beats and Gothic guitar impressions. And despite the breathtaking intensity of the angular acid comedown "She's Lost Control", the soaringly depraved detachment of "New Dawn Fades" and the proto-slowcore "Candidate", opening track "Disorder" remained the piece years ahead of its time and most immediately enduring. Review: What is left to be written about the debut Joy Division album that hasn't been written already? Well, not much except to say if you've never heard it, you must. This is the more raw of the two studio albums, powered mainly by the foundations laid down by bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. But although the rudimentary electronic experimentalism of its successor Closer are missing - with the possible exception of 'She's Lost Control' - Martin Hannett's production job creates an uneasy world of magical reverbs and echoes that lure in the listener. From its iconic, Peter Saville sleeve to classic songs like 'Shadowplay' and 'Interzone' - which started life as a cover of Nolan Porter's Northern Soul cult hit 'Keep On Keeping On' - this is the template that effectively launched a thousand bands, from indie and post punk to goth and beyond.

Review: Angelo Badalamenti is to noir thrillers what Ennio Morricone is to the spaghetti Western scene. The Italo-American composer has been a pivotal part of the Hollywood soundtrack scene since the 70s and, among many cult-like figures, he's collaborated extensively with the great David Lynch on projects such as Blue Velvet and, of course, the present Twin Peaks, a film which has reached a God-like status over the last two decades. The music from the motion picture is as vivid and dream-like as the film itself; Badalalementi immerses you in a world of Neo-gothic trance and bizarre, fairy-like dances that instantly recall the movie's infamous dance scene concerning two horses. What is most notable about it is his use of subtle jazz nuances and the man's pioneering downtempo style. NB: this particular release, Fire Walk With Me, features additional music and acts as a companion to the official soundtrack as heard in the movie. What a soundtrack. Totally essential.

Review: As an ode to the upcoming remake of David Lynch's infamous Twin Peaks, there is a flurry of Angelo Badalamenti reissues at the moment. In fact, both this original soundtrack, which is the official music as heard in the 1992 film, and the Fire Walk With Me spin-off have both resurfaced as reissues this week. Unsurprisingly, we recommend for you to snap up both because they have been something of a rarity over the last 10 years. Timeless and iconic from start to finish, this soundtrack is not for the faint of heart, and will likely stir some feelings upon initial listen. This will be all the more palpable if you were shocked and eternally intrigued by the movie. We were, of course, and we absolutely cannot wait for the new series either!

Review: Here's something to warm the cockles of all those who've fallen in love with Air's brand of sumptuous, lounge-inspired downtempo grooves: a sumptuous 20th anniversary box set, containing a double album, triple-CD and poster. All the familiar favourites are present - "Femme D'Argent", "Kelly Watch The Stars", "All I Need", "Sexy Boy" etc - alongside rare and previously unreleased tracks. These include unheard cuts from soundtrack sessions, live performances, and alternate versions. The third CD also gathers together lesser-known remixes Air have crafted for others over the years, including superb versions of tracks from Neneh Cherry, Beck and David Bowie. Review: St Germain's second album, Tourist, is 20 years old. To mark the occasion, the man behind the pioneering jazz-house project, Ludovic Navarre, has decided to offer up a remixed version. Or, more specifically, a partially remixed version, because most of the mixes on offer are takes on the original set's most celebrated tracks: 'So Flute' and the peerless 'Rose Rouge'. This is not a complaint though, because the majority of the reworks are superb. Check for example the 'Rose Rouge' tweaks from Atjazz (bouncy, percussive, jazz-house warmth), Ron Trent (deep house-tinged jazz-funk),Jovonn ('90s US house) and Nightmares on Wax (dense, bass-heavy and full of stunning solos). Black Motion's 'Anniversary Mix' of 'Sure Thing' is deep, drowsy and detailed, while Navarre's 'Amapiano Mix' is as warming and luscious as you'd expect.

Review: Last month marked the 50th anniversary of the release of Blue, Joni Mitchell's most celebrated album. To coincide with this momentous birthday, the legendary singer-songwriter has decided to put out a box set containing remastered versions of first four studio albums she released, all of which were initially issued by Reprise Records. The peerless Blue is on there, of course, alongside her beautifully sweet and stripped-back 1968 debut, Song to a Seagull, the unconventional harmonies of Clouds (1969), and 1970's Ladies of the Canyon, arguably the first album in which Mitchell genuinely developed her artistic vision. The remastering work is superb, with each finger-picked riff and strummed chord audible in stunning definition.

Review: Originally out in 1997 on the utterly independent Regal imprint, The Patty Patty Sound represented the true core of The Beta Band, and of the experimental folk scene as a whole. The Scottish band, although largely operating on the outskirts of commercial success, have always had a cult following of diggers who either scouted their breaks of their general mash up of different styles and influences. "Inner Meet Me", for instance, takes an indie kind of vibe and twists it to its very limits with the help of weird and wonderful electronic manipulations, while "The House Song" shakes its way across a disco beat and comes out the other end with a trip hop groove. On this killer EP you'll also find some downtempo moments on "The Monolith", and more classic rock sounds via "She's The One", served with a distinct folk flavor, of course. Unmissable and timeless; a truly recommended piece of wax for your collection.

Review: It's been a wee while since William Orbit released a solo album - eight years, in fact - but we'll forgive him; after all, he's one of the world's most in-demand producers and remixers. The Painter, whose title alludes to his favourite hobby (he painted the clubber illustration), is predictably packed with star turns from guest vocalists, sonically picturesque, and full to bursting with picturesque melodies, dreamy chords, intricate instrumentation and nods towards a variety of styles he's long been associated with (think downtempo, ambient and deep synth-pop in particular). Highlights include the shuffling, sun-splashed Georgia collaboration 'Bank of Wildflowers', the twinkling pianos, deep bass and Kate Bush-esque vocals (provided by Polly Scattergood) of 'Colours Colliding', and the Ibiza-friendly ambient swell of 'Planet Sunrise'.

Review: As the matter-or-fact title makes clear, this expansive four-disc set offers an in-depth introduction to the interconnected worlds of "Mod" culture and Northern Soul. Traditionally, there has been plenty of crossover between the two scenes, with rhythm and blues-loving "Mods" amongst the first to embrace the stomping Michigan soul obscurities that were the backbone of the "Northern" scene. The selections here veer more towards the soul end of the spectrum, but there's no denying their quality, with famous scene staples such as Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love", Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You ((Indeed I Do)" and Soul Brothers Six's "I'll Be Loving You" (famously covered a few years back by wonky house act Crooked Man) being joined by a string of Motown hits.

Review: The Asylum Albums is the latest in a string of long-planned archival re-issues of Joni Mitchell's globally adored work. Together with her late-manager, Elliot Roberts, the pair announced in 2020 that fans would have an opportunity to get their hands on some of the Canadian folk, jazz, pop and rock doyen's previously unreleased stuff, while also revisiting seminal albums.
Each box set in the series follows a similar format, with original albums packaged together with brand new artwork by Mitchell, with a second musical outing for each era containing things most of us have never heard before. Review: If Rumours, the eleventh studio album by British-American legends Fleetwood Mac, is heralded among the greatest records of the 1970s, or indeed the 20th Century, then any attempt to rethink its contents needs to be good. Luckily, we're talking about arguably the most accomplished shape-shifters music has ever seen, starting life as a U.K. blues duo and morphing - at times a little jarringly - through various lineups and eventually into hugely influential and commercially successful American pop-rock act.
Suffice to say the troupe manage to pull some excellent alternative versions out of the bag here, then. Granted, they might struggle to stick like the originals of 'Gold Dust Woman' or 'The Chain', but that's an unfair comparison. Those tracks have long-since cemented a place in pop culture. The variations here are quality through and through in their own right, though, which is nothing short of a triumph when you're dealing with untouchable material.

Review: The ninth studio album by the Grateful Dead, Terrapin Station came after a two-year hiatus by the band, who afterward returned to live touring and high-concept jazz-rocking. Something of an achievement in defining the more mathematic elements of prog at the time, several of the songs heard across the album deal in time signatures less common to the Westernized ear, with perhaps the most enduring of them all, 'Estimated Prophet', having been recorded in septuple time. Perhaps mirroring this sense of rhythmic ambition verging on megalomaniac grandeur, the album, seemingly springing forth from this central song, deals throughout with themes of false-prophetic grandiosity - cultic self-aggrandisement - that seemed to emanate from California and the West Coast at the time, especially in the immediate aftermath of the counterculture and in the more musical annals of history in the then-unfurling latter half of the 20th Century.

Review: Favourites on Charlie Gillett's BBC show, Cuban outfit Free Hole Negro have taken the world music scene by storm since the inclusion of 'Superfinos Negros' in the Habana Blues soundtrack. Black beans are common food in Cuba. Frijoles is the name of one of the most traditional dishes full of beans, the main source of energy for the poor who live out in the countryside and for the street children in the city. Another big energy source in the universe are "black holes," large massive areas which scientists believe exist in the universe. Together, black beans and black holes are the energy sources from which Free Hole Negro draw their explosive and spontaneous sound. The band was formed in 1999 and by mixing their inspirations from Latin with the underground rhythms of Havana (hip hop, R'n'B, reggae, jazz and funk.) Free Hole Negro create a new musical universe, a fusion of sound which is completely their own. They called it free hop. Even though it has been seven years since the band was first formed, it was not until they participated in Benito Zambrano's film Habana Blues from 2005, that their music reached the world outside Cuba. The film is about Cuba's underground music scene and it paved the way for bands like Free Hole Negro's international breakthrough.

Review: Warner Bros Motion Picture Sparkle has an essential soundtrack, all thanks to the work of two soul legends in Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield. In the film itself, it was the movie's main stars Irene Cara and Lonette McKee who mostly sang the tunes but this recording features the Queen of Soul Aretha singing them at Curtis's Curtom studio in Chicago. He composed and produced all the tunes and here they are pressed onto sealer vinyl for the first time since they were first released. It's a feel good selection whether or not you have seen the film.

Review: The music of Joni Mitchell will never go out of fashion and so it is that much of it is in the middle of a big reissue run. Joni's voice and songwriting has rarely ever been topped by anyone in any genre, let alone the folk and Americana worlds she is best known in. Song To A Seagull is one of many long player testaments to that and was a remarkable debut in 1968 which soon marked her out in a class of one. The album is known for having been mixing poorly the first time around so has been sharpened up for this reissue meaning both sides of the record - labeled 'I Came to the City' and 'Out of the City and Down to the Seaside' - sound superb.

Review: This expansive round up of New Order's three-decade career first surfaced in 2005 on London Records. The 2016 edition, though, has been updated to include material from the iconic Manchester band's 2013 studio set, Lost Sirens (itself a collection of tracks initially intended for '05's "Waiting For The Sirens Call", which was the last album to include all of New Order's original line-up). It does a good job in chronicling the band's journey from jangly, post Joy Division indie-rockers to shimmering synth-pop elder statesmen, via the loved-up rush of "Blue Monday", the electro stomp of "Confusion", the end-of-night rush of "True Faith", and the Italia '90 nostalgia of "World In Motion" (still the only decent football-related song to hit the charts).

As well as the well known singles, it serves up cold minimal funk, party jams, musings on the bleak realism of life and all manner of impossible fusion of jazz, soul, rock, pop, synth and gospel that only this most special of artists could have pulled off.

Review: Remarkably, it's 25 years since the release of Lou Reed's seventeenth solo album, Set the Twilight Reeling. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Reed has decided to offer-up a fresh vinyl edition, this time on audiophile-friendly heavy wax with an accompanying booklet. To aid sound quality, the album has now been stretched over three sides of vinyl, with the fourth featuring an etched image of the album's artwork. It's a beautifully presented reissue all told, though it's the quality of the music - typically fuzzy, lo-fi and dominated by the twin attractions of Reed's proto-punk guitars and weather-worn vocals - that impresses most. While not one of the most celebrated sets in Reed's epic catalogue, Set The Twilight Reeling is still a hugely impressive and involving album.

You get the single versions of 'School's Out' and 'Gutter Cat vs. The Jets', an alternate version of 'Alma Mater' and an early demo of 'Elected'. On top of all that is a recording of the band's concert in Miami in 1972, recorded just before they stepped into the studio to lay down the album.

We're promised it will finally appear later in the year. First, as a taster, we're treated to an EP that accompanies the legendary title track - a dexterous and squeezable chunk of '80s electrofunk blessed with some fine soloing from Davis - with three new "Rubberband of Life" versions. These feature vocalist Ledisi and re-cast the track as a dusty, Fugees style chunk of New York hip-hop soul.
