Review: Stone Foundation are among the few to offer some true-school Northern soul vibes these days (although the band are technically from the West Midlands!). The point is, however, that if you want to feel the spirit, the sounds and the emotions of 70s British funk then you've drawn the right record. Recorded at Paul Weller's (The Jam) studio down in Surrey, the album isn't all James Brown struttin' and hollerin'; many of the tracks on Everybody Anyone are bittersweet love songs for entirely different demographics to get stuck into. From the families, to young teens and lovers of soulful pop music, this is a joyous album with a positive energy and a cheerful charisma at its core.

Review: 8-piece soul unit Stone Foundation return after just two years for another album, going full-pelt with yet another array of collaborators and guest singers. Now comfortable with their relatively newfound home at 100% Records, the band here portray a musical mood of peace, with 'Echoes Of Joy' edging on religiosity, and alongside 'Outside Looking In', nailing that post-chic fusion of modern EDM and funk that has bagged them numerous Top 40 spots.

Review: Outside Looking In is the landmark 10th album from Stone Foundation and it finds the much loved outfit being a big and fresh sound to their work. Over the last quarter of a century they have take an inclusive and collaborative approach. That continues here as the album was written with backing vocals from none other that Paul Weller himself and was recorded this Black Barn Studio. Also adding colour to the grooves are disco diva Melba Moore plus more from Sulene Fleming, Laville, Sheree Dubois and Graziella Affinita. It makes for a fulsome funk sound with big dance floor potential.

Review: Etta James' go-to key smith, Blue Note contributor and general jazz legend, Cox's Clap Clap is a collection of never-released gems finally get to see the light of the day... And not before time! Showcasing his multifaceted composing skills, we flip from a swampy, almost rock-like blues of the title track to a Mancini-style somnambulant sigh "Lost My Love" with both ease and the sudden frenetic flip jazz is most loved for. A fantastic peak into a window into the past that's been boarded up for decades.

Review: Another comprehensive collection of jazz here from the good people at Light in The Attic. This 14 track compilation has been carefully selected and compiled by Japanese jazz expert Yusuke Ogawa, who is the owner of Tokyo's Universounds record store. It comes on heavyweight vinyl with vast track-by-track liner notes by Ogawa and take sin everything from hard bop to free jazz with plenty of big and explosive moments as well as more deep and introspective sections of calm, all of which has been plucked from the vaults of Nippon Columbia. There is a reason Japanese jazz is so revered, and this record shows why.

Review: Minoru Fushimi originally released Thanatos Of Funk in 1985, proving that boogie wasn't exclusive to the US. You can hear his Japanese culture coming through on this incredible album, not least reinterpreting traditional song 'Dompan', but in truth this is a faithful and on-point run at everything electro funk stood for in the mid 80s. There's that necessary streak of humour in tracks like 'Disco Thesis', but primarily this is all about how dope that Moog lines and slick bass slaps sound mixed up with the swathes of vocoder. If you're serious about boogie, you might have had this one in your sights for some time. Finally, your chance has come, so don't waste time snapping up this stellar boogie bomb.

Review: For the latest edition of their essential Wamano A to Z compilation series - the third to date - DJ Yoshiwza Dynamite JP and Chintam have decided to focus on "Japanese light mellow funk, disco and boogie" tracks recorded between 1978 and '88. Like its' predecessors, the eight-track set is heavy on obscurities and little-known cuts, as well as bona fide killer cuts. There's much to savour throughout, from the intergalactic, slap-bass propelled boogie brilliance of Jadoes' 'Friday Night (Extended Mix)' and the laidback funk bliss of Yumi Sato's 'Ame', to the smooth jazz-funk lusciousness of Hitomi Tohyama's 'Rainy Driver' and the Latin-infused, Teena Marie style electrofunk brilliance of Mizuki Koyami's 'Kare Niwa Kanawanai'.

Review: Some compilations manage to both educate, inform and educate in equal measure; this fine collection from Japanese crate diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite and Chintam is one such set. Comprising mostly little-known tracks recorded by Japanese artists between 1968 and '70, it offers up a wealth of cuts inspired by American jazz-funk "rare groove". There's much to admire across the ten tracks, from the mazy Rhodes solos, fizzing big band jazz grooves and traditional Eastern instrumentation of Toshiko Yonekawa's "Soran Bushi", and the languidly-slung brilliance of Tadaki Misago and Tokyo Cuban Boys' multi-faceted musical fusion "Jongara Reggae", to the Jimi Hendrix-goes-funk heaviness of "Incitation" by Monica Lassen & The Sounds, and the drums-driven dancefloor madness of Masahiko Sato Jiro Inagaki & Big Soul Media's "Sniper's Snooze". Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has light surface marks/scratches, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

On the first instalment in the Wamono A to Z compilation series, released in September 2020, dusty-fingered diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite.jp and Chintam focused on Japanese jazz-funk and rare groove gems recorded and released between 1968 and '80. For this speedy sequel, they've narrowed their focus further in order to showcase little-known Japanese funk slammers pressed to wax between 1970 and '77. As you'd expect, there's tons of absolute bangers amongst the 10 tracks on show, with highlights including the Blaxploitation movie soundtrack vibes of Mieko Hirota's 'Theme of Doberman Cop', the fuzzy, Hammond-sporting psych-funk of Fujio Tokita's quirky 'Watashi No Beatles', and the energetic, proto disco-funk of Hatsumi Shibata's 'Singer Lady'.

Review: In the late 1970s and early 80s, disco swept through dancefloors across the world, with musicians, producers and labels in all four corners of the world recording and releasing their own local variations on the New York-pioneered sound. This fine compilation digs into the Japanese interpretation of the sound, offering up a selection of gems pulled from the vaults of the Nippon Columbia imprint. As you'd expect, there are some genuinely soaring and delightfully over-the-top cuts on show (see Godiego's 'The Odyssey Begins - Monkey Magic' and the disco-funk mania of Ikue Sakakibara's bilingual 'This Is Hot'), alongside such forgotten or lesser-celebrated gems as Yumi Moreta's rubbery bass-propelled 'Krishna', the strings-and-synth-drenched brilliance of Pink Parachute's 'Disco Great' and the ridiculously grandiose 'Hazumi De Daitte (A Woman Inside a Man's Body)' by Hatsumi Shibata.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corners of outer sleeve, product unopened & in excellent condition***

Minoru Fushimi originally released Thanatos Of Funk in 1985, proving that boogie wasn't exclusive to the US.

Review: Japanese jazzmasuta Jiro Inagaki is graced by a stunning new tribute album via 180g, Legends, which celebrates his 90th birthday in 16-track compilation form. Made up entirely of works made between 1968 and 1980, and selected by DJ and producer Yusuke Ogawa, this is an album made almost entirely of Jiro's best-known instrumentals, not least a formerly unreleased version of the standout 'Express'. The recordings are impeccable, and this is a standard which does not waver over the entire 12-year period this LP spans.

Review: Unlike previous instalments in the 180g label's Wamono series, this isn't a compilation in the strictest sense of the term, but rather a retrospective. It showcases a range of killer jazz-funk and rare groove tunes recorded at Nippon Columbia studios in the mid 1970s by arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, koto legend Toshiko Yonekawa and shakahuchi master Kifu Mitsuhashi. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the mellow, slow-burn lusciousness of 'Nanbu Ushioi-Uta' and the up-beat, guitar solo-laden brilliance of 'Hohai-Bushi', to the all-time Japanese jazz-funk classic that is 'Saitaro-Bushi' and the solo-laden brilliance of 'Asadoya Yunti', whose dazzling Fender Rhodes solos are reminiscent of the early '70s work of the late, great Billy Preston.

Review: 3 Pram Records unveils its inaugural release here with a fantastic full length from Los Angeles powerhouses Orgone. Alongside collaborators like Cyril Neville, Kelly Finnigan and Pimps of Joytime, the band of percussionists, trumpet players, saxophonists, keys and drum mavericks all serve up another gritty collage of soul, funk and hip hop that pairs vintage production with slick rhythms and a storytelling narrative that has a spiritual message. This is the band's 10th album and is another one that sits right up there with the best of the rest.
