Review: Hi-def mono reissue of Floyd's classic 1967 album, remastered in 2017 from the original analog tapes. Known for its rough, crunchy psych sound that predated the band's later, boundless space rock sensibilities, this is the wall-breakers at their most primordial, and their least beat-around-the-bush. This one's been given an anniversary reissue a whopping three times in a row; of course, we should endeavour not to overlook the more perfunctory, audiophiles' rarities such as this. Make sure you add it to your 'Gates Of Dawn' collection while you can.

Review: King Crimson of the 1970s sounded very different from the band that made this Discipline album with a newly formed line-up of Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Adrian Belew and Tony Levin seven years after the band first broke up. It is now 40 years young so gets the requisite reissue treatment and has also been remastered for the occasion. It comes on a mighty hefty 200g vinyl so can be played extra loud, just as it should. The record mixes up electronica, funk, pure pop, modern avant-garde and much more and was a chart success in many different countries around the world.

Review: Prolific Pink Floyd record producer and engineer James Guthrie once again has his 2018 remix album for the band's 'Animals' reissued, this time on limited LP wax. A five-piece meditation on Floyd's penchant for animalism, Guthrie's reinterpretation yanks the Orwellian structure and themes of the original album and hurls them back into an electronic prog rock prayer, with many of the new versions impressively breaching 10 minutes. In true Floyd fashion, this is window-closed, record-sleeves-on-the-floor, bong-hitting stuff, but with an extra Guthriean darkness lended to it. Clock the pig oinks littering the mix too.

Review: Northampton-based psychedelic rock band Dark formed in 1968 while founding member Steve Giles was still at school. They quickly became popular on the live circuit and worked up a tight playing style that they managed to capture when in the studio. Their debut album is their most well-known but a long series of compilations have also been issued. However, this is the first-ever accurate reproduction of one of the last surviving original twelve gatefold copies of the band's debut with the full-colour gatefold sleeve.

Review: Fear Inoculum brought a 13-year Tool hiatus to an end in typically dramatic, knock-your-socks-off and blow wind through your hair style. A fine example of what the group have always done so well - running with wolves like Mogwai, only with far more metal sensibilities, and a damn-sight bigger helping of experimentalism, when this bad boy arrived in 2019 it shot straight to the top of the US Billboard 200, the third consecutive record from the group to do so.

Of course, those charts don't necessarily mean as much in this age as they did when the preceding Tool LP dropped, but 270,000 album-equivalent units within the first week do not lie. Nor does the quality of work here. From the avant-garde percussion and awkward synths of 'Chocolate Chip Trip', to the almost-ethereal ambience of 'Legion Inoculant' and the riff and crescendo heavy 'Pneuma', it's a wild thing of beauty.

Review: British psychedelic rock band Dark released their debut album Dark Round The Edges in 1972 and put out several more until the late 70s. Steve Giles was the man responsible for forming the group while still at school in Northampton in 1968. He took care of the design, photography and production as well as playing lead guitar and providing vocals alongside Martin Weaver on guitar, Alan Bowley engineering and Ron Johnson on bass. Their well-honed live sound transferred well to record when they head into SIS Studios to record the bulk of their work. Melodic prog rock licks, fuzzy guitar riffs and angular drums define much of this collection.

Review: Interestingly, having reinvented themselves in the 80s with the help of Trevor Horn and various other members of the team, accidentally spawning the pioneering legends Art of Noise in the process, when we come to 2023, a trip back to their 70s heyday is more what the doctor ordered. With their guitarist Steve Howe at the production helm they are fancy technology-free, sounding as live as ever, and have restoered everything from the long songs - two of the 13 here top nine minutes - to the old logo and sci-fi artwork. They've even got a new Jon in to replace the old one. and Davidson does a good job of impersonating Anderson, apparently with the help of a female singer double tracking his vocals. You don't need a PhD to work out this is a nostalgic trip, but as attempts to relive former glories go we have heard a lot worse.

Review: The hugely influential and way ahead of their time crew of spacerock freaks known as Hawkwind see an official release for this 1972 recording of the band in action at Camden's Roundhouse, previously circulating in bootleg form. The show was part of their 'Space Ritual' tour and captures them pretty much at the height of their powers, with Lemmy's bass tones driving on a powerful garage rock grind that did a lot to inspire both metal and punk. The double LP set also showcases their pioneering work with mind bending electronics, and at times, between the heavier rockouts they verge on ambient experimentation. Add some classic tunes like 'Master of the Universe' and 'Silver Machine' and this ends up being quite an all round winner.

Review: Thai funk greatness wafts over to the Netherlands from South-East Asia, as we revel in this new, second album from Yin Yin - 'The Age Of Aquarius'. An 8-tracker of gilded and groovy proportions, it's paramount to keep in mind the deft fusion of electronics and acoustics on this album. Also informing on the project are the band's experiences on the road, where the band felt an unexplainable, psychic interplay between their fans' reactions to their performances, and their ability to create even more music.

Review: First released way back in 1974 on the King Universal label, Spirale's sole LP has long been a cult classic. Original pressings are fiendishly hard to find, in part because the album's heady mixture of spiritual and progressive jazz is one of the finest examples of musical fusion around. That much is evident from opener 'Rising', a drowsy and fittingly titled chunk of sun-speckled spirituality, and the chiming, new age influenced bliss of 'Cabral, Anno 1', where bells, intricate percussion instruments and twittering bird sounds ushers in a stretched-out jazz groove. Elsewhere, 'Una Ballata Par Yanaz' is a deep, fluid, slow-motion number, while closing cut 'Peperoncino (Cose Vecchi, Cose Nuove)' is progressive jazz at its finest.

Review: Cult German electronic outfit Tangerine Dream made an indelible impression with Electronic Meditation, their first big release and first grand studio project. It was rebased in 1970 and is a thrilling fusion of Krautrock, experimental rock, psychedelia and electronic rock that utterly belies the times in which it was made. It is also the only LP to feature the line up of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze and Conrad Schnitzler and was recorded using just a two-track Revox tape recorder. At times haunting and tense, at others more dreamlike and contemplative, it is a uniquely freeform style of music.

Review: Do you ever stop and wonder where we'd all be without Soul Jazz in our lives? Whether the answer is yes or no, we often do. The label manages to do the business with both archival and brand new releases, straddling genres like an experienced jockey on race day, riding whatever gem of sound it has between its legs all the way to the Must Buy pile.

The last time we had one of these Deutsche Elektronische Musik compilations it made a lasting impression, and now here we are again, gifted aural visions of a future that never materialised, and yet remains embedded in the common conscious. A place of whirring synths and windswept effects, awkward time signatures and glittering chimes, a sonic realm that gave us the likes of Neu! (a track of theirs appears on this excellent album) and Can (sadly missing here). Innovation that's very hard to label.

Review: Animals was the tenth studio album by English rock legends Pink Floyd. It arrived on 21 January 1977 and was produced entirely at their own Britannia Row Studios in London throughout the preceding year. This is the first time the album has been made available in 5.1 Surround Sound on this Deluxe Edition. The record marked a departure from the usual style and was a concept album, focusing on the social-political conditions of mid-1970s Britain. It took inspiration from George Orwell's Animal Farm and depicts people as the same classes as in the book with pigs, sheep and dogs in that order.

Review: Australia is a hotbed of psychedelic rock 'n' roll bands. Perhaps, in the same way the country's cinematic output often does, this is all a result of the wild wild country effect - a nation with landscapes so evocatively barren, filled with endless nowheres, the imagination runs riot in terms of what might be waiting in that untapped outback. Maybe it's just because cities like Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane have incredibly fertile native music scenes that can compete with the best from the Euro-American axis.

Let's not second guess things, and instead focus on the depth and incredible wealth of ideas in this, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets' fifth long player. An energy-packed adventure into a place that's somehow stadium sounding, and yet also the polar opposite of what anyone could call main stage rock 'n' roll music, to say this is a wonderful trip would be underselling things.

It's a great document of a band at the peak of their powers that now gets reissued by Room On Fire on nice heavyweight vinyl. Review: It could not get much more late-1960s into early-1970s folk rock if it tried. Band name: Rainbird. Album title: Maiden Flight. General vibe: somewhere between a psychedelic ultraworld, late night blues basement and trip to a remote island to join an off-grid community. Painting quite a vivid picture there, admittedly, this 1971 rarity proves exactly why contemporary musicians can try to emulate this era but will never truly recreate it. Simply put, it's impossible to commit in the same way today. Rant and questionable point aside, Rainbird's uncovered gem is an epic masterpiece in no uncertain terms. From the wistful croonerdom of 'Stormdance (Part 1)' and its Wurlitzer powered chaotic seizure follow up l ('Stormdance (Part 2)'), to the lead guitar solo mastery of 'Man On the Mountain' and the quiet, reflective journeyman stuff on 'Sailboat', it manages to include every totem of this scene, without sounding cliched.

It was a real milestone for the jazz-rock fusion scene and marked a stunning debut in 1970 that has been hard to find ever since. Saxophonist Brian Smith, guitarist Chris Spedding - who wouold later go on to produce the Sex Pistols' first recordings - drummer John Marshall, bassist Jeff Clyne and sax, oboe and pianist Karl Jenkins all brought energy and invention in equal measure on this one with cuts like the title track offer lovely electric blues, '1916' featuring heavy drums and melancholic horns and 'Striation' being more serene. Be With have remastered this reissue from the original tapes.

Review: Some tempos are pivotal to certain genres and 140 is one of those when it comes to dubstep. For that reason it is the title of this fine on going All Stars series from DUPLOC. Volume four is another masterful one with all niches explored starting with the low-end wobble of Mob Killa's 'Hattori' which is a brilliantly moody and late night saunter through a desolate urban landscape. Oudjat's 'Losing Control' is just as menacing and dark, and Ego Death pairs to back further to lush echoing hits and warped synths that hang in the air on 'Run It.' The flip side offers three more sparse but impactful cuts of hefty 140 bass brilliance.

Review: A rare chance to catch the Floyd in what is effectively the second of the many phases they went through as a band, in this case exactly half way between the release of their debut album Piper At The Gates of Dawn in 1967 and their most successful, Dark Side of The Moon, in 1973. You can hear the transition they're undergoing when you compare the four tracks included on this recording of the band at San Francisco's Fillmore West, with Syd Barrett's replacement David Gilmour stepping up and becoming increasingly confident on his guitar duties. Side one's 'Embryo' and 'Green Is The Colour' are still very much embedded in traditional rock territory, with the perky rendition of the latter often sounding like their then contemporary Jimi Hendrix. Flip it over, however, and you see where they are headed - the much more experimental 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' with its screaming effects and the meditative, minimal 'Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun'.

Back in 1969, he composed this album and then released it a year later on Sermi. It was his first solo work and has long been hard to find depositor its cult status. The artist himself managed to unearth a copy in his archives which is what this reissue has been taken from. The misspelling in the title is part of its charm as is the electric bass and contrabass of young Tommaso, jamming it out with a sting section and freely colliding jazz-funk, free jazz and jazz-rock. The whole thing has been lovingly restored for superior sound.

The progressive rockers had, two years previous, delivered the incredible score to Profondo Rosso, and won plaudits at the time for their work - once people knew it was them. It was originally intended to be soundtracked by jazz pianist and composer Giorgio Gaslini, but disagreements on his output left just three of his themes in, but the credits were never updated, leaving Goblin listed incorrectly as "performers" as oppose to writers of the music. While this would have left a bad taste in the mouths of many, evidently that wasn't the case here. Two years later, the band were back with Argento and making this insane collection of sounds, half tracks, atmospheric noises, and cacophonous arrangements. A truly visceral experience, it's an immersive assault on the senses touching on experimental electronics, contemporary classical, gothic, and plain weirdo.

Review: In music, they say be careful what you wish for. We think it's also important to be careful what you accomplish. Presumably Pink Floyd understand this only too well, with Dark Side of the Moon catalysing a step up for the progressive rock noblemen in terms of status, but also a shift in fan base demographics as "play the hits" ticket holders gradually replaced deep dive listeners. Conceived as a suite of music that would switch up what the band saw as a live show going a little stale, Dark Side of the Moon: A Piece for Assorted Lunatics first hit public ears in January 1972 when excerpts were incorporated into a gig at Brighton Dome. Representing not the namesake album itself, but rather a version of its contents organised in two long medley arrangements, seamlessly melding psychedelic rock into one grand overture, if anything this is how the music was actually intended to be heard.

Review: Tangerine Dream's seminal 1976 album finds itself getting a welcome gatefold vinyl reissue. Marking the beginning of the group's move away from experimental to more overtly melodic sounds, and features the urgent tones of the title track, the dramatic, quasi-medieval melodies of The Big Sleep In Search Of Hades, the swelling strings and cinematic atmosphere of "3am At The Border Of The Marsh From Okefenokee" and the pastoral prog of "Invisible Limits".

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Fresh from 1986 - and recently re-edited by John Talabot - documents do not get any more Balearic than this.... Spanish trio Ishinohana's debut album is rich in cosmic attitude. At points daydreaming while the sand laps at its toes (the lilting nylon strings and soft padded hand drums of "Lucia", the overlapping guitars and galloping refrains of "La Flor De Piedra"), at others a much darker, more spacious star-gazing affair (the Arabic dreams of "El Beso Negro") and at others a heavier rhythmic, floor-minded approach (the lolloping bass and reggae-wise strums of "Variacion 23") this is a timeless document that befits situations and sceneries that existed long before this record was conjured up... And will remain so for generations after. Stunning.

Review: Franco Falsini's Sensation's Fix were the subject of a much needed career retrospective last year, with RVNG Intl's Music Is Painting In The Air offering a fantastic overview of the work the fondly remembered purveyors of reverb heavy cosmiche pop did in the 1970s. With that still fresh in our minds, it's great to see Superior Viaduct reissue Fragments Of Light, the 1974 debut album proper from Sensations Fix, for the first time on vinyl since its initial release. At this stage of Sensation's Fix sonic trajectory, Falsini was still focused on a more guitar based pop approach than the elegance he would later achieve but Fragments Of Light remains an important historical document in the story of music's most eminently cool figures.

Review: A Record Store Day spectacular, Vuolo & Grande's Desert is as special as it gets; not only has the obscure Italian library records release been highly sought after for years, it's also a very formative instrumental psychedelic record in terms of utilise synthesisers in such a cosmic way. Cue references to Goblin and Tangerine Dream. You could even throw recent Demdike Stare material in that reference pit, too. Highlights include the warped, syncopations and battling twangs on "Transvesuvian" and the grand opening rock-out "Take Flights" but you really need to tuck in from start to finish to fully experience this. Way ahead of its time.

Review: It is not without good reason Rolling Stone magazine described The Mars Volta's as "like finding the key to another dimension teeming with monsters and magical arcana; twisted fables and dangerous lore". Pressing play, stepping through that portal, feels transformative, whether it's the first or 40th time you've heard their work, which can either be abrasive, jarring and unsettling, or beautiful and life-affirming.

Progressive rock at its most otherworldly and explorative, La realidad de los suenos is probably the most fitting career-spanning box set you could hope for them to release. From the hidden 3D glasses turning LP cover into an alien-like world, to the breadth of tracks on offer, if you're stepping into this realm be sure to leave a trail of breadcrumbs as it's difficult to remember where you are once the music takes hold.

To do that, he formed a new band, Utopia; a year later, their debut album landed in record stores. Here reissued on heavy, audiophile-friendly wax, the set sees the combo offer up dizzyingly expansive tracks that draw on a disparate variety of styles (think jazz-rock, blues and funk-rock as well as progressive rock and art-rock), frequently change shape midway through, and offer a showcase for the band members' obvious musical talents. The album's undisputed highlight is closer 'Ikon', a 30-minute mini rock-opera that sounds like Steely Dan making prog rock.

Since then, they've gone from success to success, releasing a string of inspired albums. Even so, "Girl & Robot With Flowers" remains one of their most stunning sets, as this re-press proves. It boasts quietly beautiful moments inspired by classic film soundtracks ("Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 3"), straight-up late night jazz movements ("For Breath A Tarry", "Cast Adrift"), and breezy, vibraphone-heavy '60s grooves ("The Girl & Robot With Flowers Part 5"). Throughout, it's beautifully played and lovingly produced, with Foat's impeccable piano playing taking centre stage.

What better way to take stock of his might as a composer and performer than to cast an ear back over some BBC sessions from his creative peak in the early 70s. Amongst the considerable cast of collaborators who feature on this set are fellow Soft Machine legends Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean and the likes of Lol Coxhill and Archie Legget, recorded for shows like Top Gear, Alan Black Show and Bob Harris.

Their Todo En Su Medida Y Armoniosamente album is a cult classic from 1974 which marked them out as some of South America's most important artists and an original copy will cost you upwards of L350. It is a fusion of soul, jazz, a little folk and plenty of funk. Tracks like 'Albarraseis' are earthy and organic affairs that take you to the Argentine countryside, while 'Quien Se Llevo A Mi Negra?' is a more funky and rocking beat for the clubs. The record has aged well and still sounds fresh all these years later.

Their Red Hall long player - which was their third at the time - first came in 2009 and was a well-received mix of math rock, progressive metal and jazz. It's made up of all original tracks aside from a couple of Armenian folk songs that Tigran has arranged. Over a decade later it remains a hugely singular work that is full of intrigue and invention.

Review: "It is, throughout its 49 minutes, a vivid and highly cosmic journey into the very core of every impulse this band has ever explored." That's a bold claim to make, but the official release blurb isn't actually pushing things too far with that loaded declaration of the genius behind Ascension Codes, Cynic's long-awaited return to the LP release schedule after a seven year hiatus.

So the last time we met in album form it was on 2014's Kindly Bent to Free Us, and it's fair to say this follow up is both the outfit being reborn, and evolving from that template. Nine central tracks offer operatic metal fanfares and complex, propellant hard rock. Meanwhile, interludes and take outs turn gaps into bridges, and ensure pressing play at track one, and listening all the way through, is a genuinely immersive experience, not to mention a real adventure.

Review: 12 years. Twelve years. T-WELVE YEARS! It's been a decade plus two since Porcupine Tree bowed out with a spectacular One Last Job at London's Royal Albert Hall. There are few venues as fitting as that statesman of a concert hall for a band that sound like this. The English troupe have always been about these huge sounds, chords soaring above your head, riffs blazing, while tracks always threatening - and often following through - to veer off the straight and narrow into more experimental prog moods.

Now they're back with a much-anticipated, and long-delayed, comeback record. The question is, then, does it live up to expectations? The answer, thankfully, is yes, and then some. Closure/Continuation brings the crew's sound bang up to date, without forgetting who they are and always have been. It's a thing of beauty, but also thunderous power when it wants to unleash it.

Review: Dutch outfit Third Eye actually performed mostly in German throughout the 70s and 80s. This newly complied collection of the band's classic is an oddball assemblage of all jazz styles- trap, bop, Latin - with space rock and other genres all fused in. It's a tight, dynamic affair that is lit up by some mega Rhodes work, fine bass and cosmic Arp Odyssey lines. The first two parts of 'Cycle' are expansive and eye opening affairs, 'Sound Cycle Suite' gets a little slower and more funky and the flip side offers further seamless fusions of jazz styles that are free flowing and joyous to behold.

It landed in April 1981 and was recorded in Quebec's Le Studio. As per previous music it found the band serving up plenty of pop leaning, radio friendly short but snappy tunes in collaboration with longtime producer Terry Brown who was back at the buttons for what was the eight long player for this seminal rock outfit. Standout singles 'Tom Sawyer', 'Limelight' and 'Vital Signs' all still sound as good now as ever, especially on this deluxe reissue.

There was a time way back when it was the cutting edge of dance and widely revered all across Europe. This compilation on Belgian label 541 reminds us of that time as it looks back ver 30 years of euphoric, teary-eyed bangers from all the main payers from The Moon to CJ Bolland to Cherry Moon Trax. It's a fanatic five slab collection that gets from deep and bubbly to raw and maximal and everything in between.

Review: Ian Carr and the Nucleus crew were real favourites of US hip hop master Madlib. He valued their dark, brooding, menacing beats and spooky soundtracks and this album is a perfect example of that adsorbing broodiness. It came on Vertigo in 1973 and was in part funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It started off life as a live show and then with an expanded cast become an album recording with help from vocalist Norma Winstone. Be With have remastered the whole record from original tapes and the sleeve has also been restored to its full original glory.

The band put it out in 197 and it was their last for the Vertigo label, all meticulously produced by Jon Hiseman. It's as good as any of their work with its funk fusions of prog, jazz and rock all ageing brilliantly well. Review: It's hard to tell whether The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other is the most reassuring or disappointing moment in the history of Van der Graaf Generator. The progressive rock outfit that came out of Manchester University in the mid-late-1960s have been going, in some form or another, for 55 years. And yet here we are, in 2022, discussing this, the only UK Top 50 album they ever released.

The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other was also their first LP released in Britain, which speaks volumes about how unfair music can be. Despite the obvious visibility issues of a band that continue to pass many by, it's safe to say critics have always been pretty blown away by the VDGG, and no more so than on this outing. At times its unsettling, in other moments joyous, it packs so much personality you can't help but get to know the players intimately on first listen.

Review: Manchester-born Van der Graaf Generator remain among the most seminal progressive rock bands in history, even now, 55 years after their inception. Adding to the reasons you should buy this particular record, if you don't already own it, is the fact Godbluff represents one of their most seminal records, and certainly a huge turning point for the outfit, their sound and attitude.

Recorded following a European tour, which itself came just after they regrouped in 1975, it was the outfit's first self-produced outing and in many ways you can hear the gear shift compared to previous John Anthony produced stuff. No less far reaching in terms of scale, nevertheless here things are tighter, more pared-back and altogether less obtuse. As with so many things, the weight loss really pays off, resulting in an LP that's perfectly formed.
