Review: Juan Mendez, a key part of the cultish techno crew Sandwell District under his Silent Servant alias, continues his voracious appetite for musical surprise with the second Tropic Of Cancer release in collaboration with Camella Lobo. Again released via the Downwards imprint, "Be Brave" stands alongside early Factory Floor releases in ploughing a droney, minimalist, synth wave sound. It would be easy to draw comparisons with the likes of Joy Division, but "Be Brave" retains its own contemporary identity, not least the dead eyed sonic menace that drapes over your senses as the track progresses. Strengthening the bridge between the past and present, Downwards have scored a real coup in securing a remix of the track from Cabaret Voltaire's Richard H Kirk, who lifts the track out of the mist of sonic depravity somewhat and twists it into a relentless, ever building industrial groove. Luxuriously presented on a clear ten inch and housed in a sumptuous sleeve, this is an eminently collectable record that rightfully won't last very long on the shelves.

Review: "The Last Holy Writer" is the sixth album by Trembling Blue Stars, the second one released worldwide through Elefant Records. This album is dark, intimate, melancholic and cloudy, but every now and then, there are rays of sunshine coming through the clouds, riding sunny melodic breezes. Slowdive and The Cure are still good references for this music, but they are too limited to describe the unique sound of Trembling Blue Stars, a sound that's ready to mingle melodic, sensitive pop with many electronic sounds, distortions, noises, static and even field recordings that envelope the songs with a nostalgic halo. "The Last Holy Writer" is the proof that one of the most influential bands in indie-pop is at its most creative, daring and inspired, now more concentrated than ever in writing the most beautiful pop songs you've heard for ages.

Review: Revisiting one of the stand-out moments from their debut LP, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Lou Hayter's synth-pop project undoubtedly sports some similarities with the former's other notable venture, Air. There is a more edgy, krautrock atmosphere in the original track but the same retro-fetishism is palpable, whilst Tom Furse's "Extrapolation" remix goes as far as to sound overtly like an Air record with its starlit washes of chord laid out in illustrious sequences. Yan Wagner is in a cheeky italo mood on his version, letting a fulsome bassline take centre stage. That leaves Axel Le Baron to get positively laconic with some tape warbled melodies and b-movie soundtracks charm all of his own.

Review: Polydor sweetheart Sunday Girl is given some big time disco and dubstep remix love here from Villa, Rusko and Slofman on this sharply presented 10". First up Mad Decent's Rusko gives "Stop Hey" a typically grubby makeover, before Slofman dips the original in some dark dubstep atmospherics before thumping Amen-style breaks come in towards the end to whip everything up into a frenzy. Flip over for the Villa retweak - our pick of the bunch - before the original version of "Stop Hey", a wonderful little raw pop gem in the making, concludes the release.
