And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: We're not sure who's behind the mysterious AC-EXP project, but the shadowy figure returns with more of that strange, submerged house music he's been tickling discerning DJs with over the past few years. After taking last year off, "1A" is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. It's a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. "1B" maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.

Review: Yossi Amoyal's Sushitech imprint never fails to impress, whether he's unearthing the new breed or it's just techno and house innovators he's paying due respect to just like underrated legends such as Steve O'Sullivan aka Bluetrain; who the label has released several volumes of work both new and old. This time it's for O'Sullivan's lesser known Bluetrain imprint. Long regarded secret weapons to 'those that know'. Foundation Dub: Chapter One features fresh cuts from the O'Sullivab studio and they've even been given actual track titles this time around, hooray! We particularly enjoyed the smoked out and glacial groove of "Friday Night Dub", the sublime bass driven dancefloor groove of "Head On" (which will work on any occasion we guarantee) or the proper and purist dub therapy of "Special Request" which keeps it as real as anything Basic Channel have done also.

Review: Killer disco rarity alert! Never officially released, Walter Gibbons and Paul Cassella's remix of The Temptations' 'Law of the Land' was something of a secret weapon for a handful of New York disco DJs in the late 1970s. Acetates exist in very small numbers, but this is the first time the remix has been given a wider release. It's a delightful - and impressively grandiose - extension of the Motown favourites' disco classic, with Gibbons adding his own spoken word vocals: a tongue-in-cheek recital of the Old Testament's 'Ten Commandments' (or at least a version of them). It's utterly great all told and should be in every disco DJ's collection. The B-side, incidentally, is a handclap track created by Gibbons for mixing purposes - he was, after all, one of the earliest beat-matching jocks and a genuine pioneer.

Review: In 1976, seven Cabo Verdean musicians going by the name Voz Di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they laid down an album of fearsome coladeira songs inspired by the music of their home island of Sao Nicolau.
The album took only a few days to record, which may explain the unexpected urgency that fires each track. Treble-soaked electric guitar lines snake back and forth through percussion-and-cavaquinho driven rhythms rooted in the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cabo Verdean emigres; subtle keyboards wash through the background, and the vocals, traded between Joana Do Rosario and To-Ze, alternately push the music forward and soar above it. The resulting album is both deeply felt and fiercely executed, and in its grooves one hears the sound of some of the finest Cabo Verdean musicians of their era locked in complete unity of purpose.

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christian Fennesz came together to stunning effect on their collaborative album Cendre. Now, for the first time ever, Touch are releasing it on vinyl. It was initially recorded between Vienna and New York in 2004 and 2006 with each artist responding to the other's compositions. Accompanying text says that the record fuses "unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition." In short, it is a powerful ambient album with a quiet but devastating artistry. Heavy chords linger in the air, distant shakers take your mind away, foggy atmospheres are run through with gentle winds. It is beautifully melancholic.

Review: The Mighty Riders were an American funk group whose 1978 album Help Us Spread The Message is a stone-cold classic for rare groove lovers. It has been famously sampled by De La Soul and now this new 10" release includes the original version of the track the pillaged, namely 'Evil Vibrations'. It comes as an original, an instrumental edit version of the song, and an extended edit. This is a must cop for funk fans as well as hip-hop historians and a standalone tune that still gets the floor going so do not sleep.

Review: A reminder of the days when liking Morrissey was a less contentious matter than it is today, 'Honey You Know Where To Find Me' is one of his more jubilant moments musically and lyrically finds the Moz in typically defiant form. The song dates back to the recording sessions for the classic Vauxhall & I album, although the original recording was shelved, only to be re-recorded a year later. You can't keep a good song down, it seems, and here it is again in glorious 10" -- and strictly limited - orm.

Review: The brotherly pair of Donnie & Joe Emerson recorded just one album in their barn out in the remote countryside of America back in the 1970s. One of the most standout tunes form that initially private press only and now well known and cult LP is 'Baby' which gets reissued every so often. Here it resides on the A-side of this new blue vinyl, where the lovelorn brothers cut a heavy-hearted path through lo-fi blue-eyed soul pastures. On the flip is 'Tonight' which is a previously unreleased gem recorded during the same period. It, too, is emotion-rich and lo-fi in construction, with the pair adding their sublime vocals to a backing track rich in steel guitar solos, chunky bass and flanged guitar chords.

Review: 'Un Temoin Dans La Ville' as a piece originally featured as part of the soundtrack for the 1962 film Eva. A classic European cafe society film, it follows the tumultuous love affair of a gold-digging debutante with a hapless, anomie-stricken writer. Fittingly for movie tropes at the time, Barney Wilen's unmistakable jazz piece (oddly similar-sounding and contemporaneous with Mancini's Pink Panther theme) accompanies scenes of women putting on airs, men scuttling around after them, and the entire denomination of tense sexuality that undercuts this spectacular dynamic. This reissue of Wilen's album of the same name contains the original piece, as well as all manner of noir jazz originals, moody as a dejected bachelorette gripping a French opera-length cigarette holder.

Review: The Advisory Circle (Cate Brooks) is a central cog in the machine that is Ghost Box, one of the most compelling labels to operate in the genre of hauntology in modern times. Brooks' too-perfect muzik is uncanny, reflecting on the grey memories of attempted architectural utopias and 80s library music for TV. These are slow instrumental electro ballads that inspire something of a failed sense of wonder in the listener, and they form a perfect addition to Brooks' extensive catalogue.

Review: According to Rave or Die's press team, this compilation style ten-inch double-pack contains only "bangers and DJ tools for connoisseurs". That's actually a rather apt description of the '90s rave influenced fare on offer. The Mover kicks things off with a 2017 re-master of nails 2009 production "Invisible Space" - think aggressive Belgian techno noises, bombastic beats and spacey bleeps - before Minimum Syndicat blurs the boundaries between electro, techno and industrial on the foreboding "Battle Dress". Over on ten-inch number two, you'll find The Hacker's similarly minded (and similarly fuzzy) "Wave of Darknes", as well as label boss Umwelt's TB-303 heavy tribute to R&S Records' back catalogue, the saucer-eyed, tops-off stomp of "Hooverrun".

Review: SZA's sophomore 2017 album Ctrl remains one of contemporary r&b's best records of the last decade. It cleared up with awards and has had us hanging on tight for a follow up ever since. There is none on the horizon yet, but there have been a couple of singles in the last year. 'Good Days', on her home label Top Dawg Entertainment comes with clean and dirty versions. The tune has all the glossy synth work and swirling pads you would expect, with SZA's own aching vocals layering in the soul and vulnerability, while warm backing vocals add an extra element of goodness.

Review: 2013's Das Heise Experiment album was one of Robert Witschakwoski's wilder efforts under the storied Exaltics alias. This belated second volume is perhaps not quite as intense - there are less acid-fired workouts, for starters - but it is just as impressively mind-altering in tone. Although rooted in machine electro, the 12 obliquely-titled tracks draw on a myriad of influences, resulting in a largely dark, moody and clandestine mixture of dark and paranoid ambience, panicked IDM, punchy, Drexciya-style missives, end-of-days mid-tempo techno and fuzzy, L.I.E.S/Vatican Shadow style lo-fi murk. As you'd expect, the whole thing hangs together brilliantly, sounding not unlike the soundtrack to an imaginary sci-fi horror set on a haunted spaceship.

Review: Combat Rock as the fifth album from The Clash, It was the one that took them to new levels of success and also, of course, is home to their most iconic single, 'Rock The Casbah'. That one went Top 10 in the USA and helped the album go double Platinum as well as taking them on tour of the States. On 28th May 1983 to celebrate the album, they played US Festival San Bernadino. Bored With The US Festival is the legendary live recording of the broadcast from that night with all the best moments from Combat Rock as well as impromptu live interactions. It proved to be the swansong for Mick Jones, who was fired from the band shortly after.
