Ordinary Days (3:36)
The Future Is Now (3:41)
Review: Tokyo-based post/math-rock noodlers Toe have a habit of cleansing the palette of each subsequent full-length they release with a follow up EP. Just like 2005's debut album The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety was followed up with 2006's New Sentimentality EP, the group would return three years on from their stellar 2009 sophomore effort For Long Tomorrow with 2012's The Future Is Now. From the twinkling emo-inflected shoegazing noodles of 'Run For Word' to the more acoustic-driven psych-jazz of 'Ordinary Days', the four cuts purposefully meander and fuse differing elements from the band's arsenal whilst somehow increasing the dense technicality to absurd, near impenetrable levels.

Review: The Mighty Riders were an American funk group whose 1978 album Help Us Spread The Message is a stone-cold classic for rare groove lovers. It has been famously sampled by De La Soul and now this new 10" release includes the original version of the track the pillaged, namely 'Evil Vibrations'. It comes as an original, an instrumental edit version of the song, and an extended edit. This is a must cop for funk fans as well as hip-hop historians and a standalone tune that still gets the floor going so do not sleep.

Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: We've extensively covered the work of Greek electronic music project Neural Network for a long time now, thanks to their compelling fusion of experimental techno and industrial music with themes of malevolent AI and/or cyborg takeover. Mostly active during the 1990s, the trio were instrumental in bringing robotic ideas to EU techno. This reissue of 'Cybernetics' is a big curio, with four new alternate takes on classic neuromantic cuts including 'Authentic' and 'Mechanic'. For those who like to sprinkle a bit of dystopianism into their DJ sets, this EP littered with sinister vocal samples scraped from future-facing TV documentaries abut cyborgs.

Review: Australian DJ and producer Dave Mathmos serves up an obscure edits entree, sampling/reworking a whopping seven disco cuts from the late 1970s and early 1980s, but adding just enough modern flair to essentially make them his own. A well-rounded, sticky quality is heard on this septagonal crock of heaters, with the downtempo slink-funk of 'Late At Night' and the equally sumptuous, string-backed plod of 'Wonderful Feeling' remaining our highlights.

Review: In 1976, seven Cabo Verdean musicians going by the name Voz Di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they laid down an album of fearsome coladeira songs inspired by the music of their home island of Sao Nicolau.

The album took only a few days to record, which may explain the unexpected urgency that fires each track. Treble-soaked electric guitar lines snake back and forth through percussion-and-cavaquinho driven rhythms rooted in the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cabo Verdean emigres; subtle keyboards wash through the background, and the vocals, traded between Joana Do Rosario and To-Ze, alternately push the music forward and soar above it. The resulting album is both deeply felt and fiercely executed, and in its grooves one hears the sound of some of the finest Cabo Verdean musicians of their era locked in complete unity of purpose.

It should have been the beginning of something extraordinary; but the pressures of making ends meet forced the musicians back to their day jobs, and Voz Di Sanicolau vanished as quickly as they had appeared, leaving their lone album, Fundo de Mare Palinha, as sole proof of their existence. Forty-four years later the album sounds as fresh as it did the day it was recorded. It is unknown if dutch sound engineer Frans Rolland, who oversaw the recordings, knew he was helping to make history: during these sessions, Joana Do Rosario, whose majestic vocals were crucial to the sound of Voz Di Sanicolau, became the first Cabo Verdean woman ever to appear on a long playing record.

Review: German Ivan Ave is a core member of the flourishing contemporary beat scene and has put out a coupe of crucial record on labels like Berlin's Jakarta. Now he branches out to Norway's Mutual Intentions with a crisp new EP, Mid Season, on 10". It showcases the dexterity of his voice which goes from offering up classic bloom bap era par's to more stylised Prince-esque deliveries on 'Mid' and downbeat, almost mumble rap styles on 'Names.' Four instrumental versions of the originals are included on the flip and will be sweet in the club, but you can't beat the vocals.

Review: 'Un Temoin Dans La Ville' as a piece originally featured as part of the soundtrack for the 1962 film Eva. A classic European cafe society film, it follows the tumultuous love affair of a gold-digging debutante with a hapless, anomie-stricken writer. Fittingly for movie tropes at the time, Barney Wilen's unmistakable jazz piece (oddly similar-sounding and contemporaneous with Mancini's Pink Panther theme) accompanies scenes of women putting on airs, men scuttling around after them, and the entire denomination of tense sexuality that undercuts this spectacular dynamic. This reissue of Wilen's album of the same name contains the original piece, as well as all manner of noir jazz originals, moody as a dejected bachelorette gripping a French opera-length cigarette holder.

With the band first forming in 1996, the 2005 LP marks the 10th Anniversary of their formation, and is as celebratory as the occasion invites, with 13 original songs in their own brand of gothic punk influenced by The Misfits, The Cure, and The Smiths. Highlights like 'Settle For Satin', 'Sadie' and 'Your Neck' sustain a consistent energy across the LP, recalling a bleaker My Chemical Romance. The album is widely regarded as one of the best albums by the band, with its emo and goth elements shining through but not dominating overtly.

Review: Following on from last year's critically acclaimed debut LP This Is Crime Wave, Codefendants return with a brand new 10" single complete with two utter bangers. The culmination of an effort by Get Dead vocalist Sam King, who by offering tattoos and selling flash art with his graffiti crew in order to raise funds to help rapper Ceschi Ramos with his incarceration; later when the pair would meet, they bonded over a bottle of whiskey and their shared passion for the Venn Diagram intersections of the realms of punk and hip-hop. With the addition of punk legend and NOFX main-man Fat Mike, an incomparable trio was born. Flagging their genre as "Crime Wave" (hence the album title), the tripod of MC's and punks deliver a dizzying concoction of new wave, hip-hop, flamenco, hardcore and sunshine pop, while the titular 'Living Las Vegas' from this new 10" features west coast rap legend 2Mex.

Review: Osaka-based ambient/dub/digital reggae fusionist (and sometime Tapes collaborator) 7FO links with vocalist NTsKi on this loved-up single "D'Ya Hear Me!". In its original form, it's opaque and saucer-eyed, with NTsKi adding dewy-eyed vocals to a 7FO riddim that cannily joins the dots between dreamy ambient pop, lo-fi digital reggae and cheery electronica. 7FO's inventive, colourful and gleefully innocent-sounding backing track can be heard in full on the instrumental "Karaoke Version". Heavier digi-dub flavours are provided on the superbly out there and spacey Bim One Production remix, while the CVN rework re-imagines the track as an off-kilter chunk of cheery experimental pop.

Review: There's no denying the quality (or quantity, for that matter) of Tim Reaper's mid-90s style jungle workouts. His bounding, floor-friendly cuts have been everywhere in 2018, or at least a dizzying array of retro-futurist record labels. Here he provides more quality dancefloor ammunition, with four fine cuts stretched across a dubplate style ten-inch double-pack. Highlights include the intoxicating skank of "The General", where hazy toaster vocal samples and jumpy reggae riffs ride heavy dub bass and skittish jungle beats, the all-out sub-bass assault of "The Walls of Jericho" (another dub-powered peak-time blinder) and the slowly building jungle dub madness of closing cut "Jarreau Dub", which includes some seriously snare-heavy drums.

Review: 2013's Das Heise Experiment album was one of Robert Witschakwoski's wilder efforts under the storied Exaltics alias. This belated second volume is perhaps not quite as intense - there are less acid-fired workouts, for starters - but it is just as impressively mind-altering in tone. Although rooted in machine electro, the 12 obliquely-titled tracks draw on a myriad of influences, resulting in a largely dark, moody and clandestine mixture of dark and paranoid ambience, panicked IDM, punchy, Drexciya-style missives, end-of-days mid-tempo techno and fuzzy, L.I.E.S/Vatican Shadow style lo-fi murk. As you'd expect, the whole thing hangs together brilliantly, sounding not unlike the soundtrack to an imaginary sci-fi horror set on a haunted spaceship.

"Unstable" is a meditative shimmering brew, unhurried and pace-setting while "Monolith" flips the vibe for something a little more warped and weird. Linking with mysterious producer Gisaza, they add a grumbling bassline, creepy arpeggios and sudden switches under a hazy cosmic sheen. Powerful stuff. You'd be wise to snap up on this before they Run Out again (not sorry).

Review: A reminder of the days when liking Morrissey was a less contentious matter than it is today, 'Honey You Know Where To Find Me' is one of his more jubilant moments musically and lyrically finds the Moz in typically defiant form. The song dates back to the recording sessions for the classic Vauxhall & I album, although the original recording was shelved, only to be re-recorded a year later. You can't keep a good song down, it seems, and here it is again in glorious 10" -- and strictly limited - orm.

Review: The UK's Mica Levi is back on our charts and much like last time, we expect these five glorious slices of drone-laden experimentation to fly out of here in record time. The supremely off-kilter waves of this new EP land on Demdike Stare's DDS imprint, now something of an institution for the odder side of electronica, and they couldn't be better placed anywhere else. That said, the noisy ambient glows of "Delete Beach (Japanese)", and the sparse, aqueous drum machine loops of "Interlude 1" are perhaps a step further out into the ether compared to the label's usual bag of tricks. On the B-side, the instrumental cut of "Delete Beach" morphs and develops beautifully for the entirety of the waxplate while, stretching to disc 2, "Interlude 2" catapults us into a world made up of sporadic pianos and Vengelian synths, leaving the English version of "Delete Beach" to unravel what was said on the A1.

Review: We're not sure who's behind the mysterious AC-EXP project, but the shadowy figure returns with more of that strange, submerged house music he's been tickling discerning DJs with over the past few years. After taking last year off, "1A" is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. It's a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. "1B" maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.

Review: Brought up on the radio shows of the legendary rock'n'roll DJs, the moondogging Alan Freed, Mad Daddy and, later, the ghostly Ghoulardi, it was hardly surprising that The Cramps' Lux Interior and Poison Ivy began trawling the thrift stores for juvenile delinquent tunes, lip-curling bad boy rock 'n' roll, strange exotica, bizarre novelty 45s, dysfunctional doo-wop, psychedelic weirdness and instrumentals made by madmen. In America in the 1950s and 1960s, there seemed to be small town versions of such vinyl madness everywhere that, by the 1970s, were remaindered and to the majority of people, unwanted. To the fledgling Cramps, this was nothing short of heaven. The duo filled their house with novelty memorabilia, schlock horror furniture and a record collection to die for. Lux eventually gravitated to his own Purple Knif Radio Show and the Cramps delivered their versions of some of the stuff they'd found. The duo name-checked many a 45 along the way and seeking them out and sampling their eccentricities is nothing short of mind-blowing. This 24-track collection positively effervesces with eccentricity.

Again, the vinyl only double-10" is divided into four themes: "Life's A Scream," "Crazy Guys, Food, Prison And A Guide To The Female Persuasion," "Welcome to the Jungle," and "Wild And Wilder Boppin' Girls." Every track pirouettes dangerously, and at times, haphazardly, around the expected. These are songs for strange
times by what can definitely be considered strange people. Gems and nuggets that sparkle even more bright in today's manufactured music maelstrom. The population of Badsville welcomes you aboard.

Drifting from a Thirteenth Floor Elevators cover that features The Black Angels' Alex Maas on jug to the Slovakian 'Prsi Prsi', this collection of excursions and altered states is a good deal more compelling that its title would suggest, rater testimony to the BJM's continued prominence over all the classicist realms they survey.

This time it's for O'Sullivan's lesser known Bluetrain imprint. Long regarded secret weapons to 'those that know'. Foundation Dub: Chapter One features fresh cuts from the O'Sullivab studio and they've even been given actual track titles this time around, hooray! We particularly enjoyed the smoked out and glacial groove of "Friday Night Dub", the sublime bass driven dancefloor groove of "Head On" (which will work on any occasion we guarantee) or the proper and purist dub therapy of "Special Request" which keeps it as real as anything Basic Channel have done also.

Review: Seven years later... Jay Kay and his band of merry soulmen return with bonafide grooves. Raw, to the point and covering a huge amount of ground, "Automaton" is an electrified hair-raiser that's designed to lift floors while "Nights Out In The Jungle" tickles the backbone from Daptone with its slinky, JB-style bass/drum groove and light rap/spoken word. Pure funk in both its original and most futuristic style... and on limited clear vinyl, too.

Minimum Syndicat - "Battle Dress" (4:59)

Umwelt - "Hooverrun" (5:24)
Review: According to Rave or Die's press team, this compilation style ten-inch double-pack contains only "bangers and DJ tools for connoisseurs". That's actually a rather apt description of the '90s rave influenced fare on offer. The Mover kicks things off with a 2017 re-master of nails 2009 production "Invisible Space" - think aggressive Belgian techno noises, bombastic beats and spacey bleeps - before Minimum Syndicat blurs the boundaries between electro, techno and industrial on the foreboding "Battle Dress". Over on ten-inch number two, you'll find The Hacker's similarly minded (and similarly fuzzy) "Wave of Darknes", as well as label boss Umwelt's TB-303 heavy tribute to R&S Records' back catalogue, the saucer-eyed, tops-off stomp of "Hooverrun".

Review: Resurfacing Sun Ra treasures from the 1950s have become increasingly prominent and, by now, his younger fans can truly explore this legend's never-ending catalogue in its original vinyl format. Modern Harmonic are the ones responsible here, and reissuing "The Lady With The Golden Stockings is a great move on their part because it's one Ra monster that we'd been missing from our catalogue; the percussion, the sax and the general feeling of potential deconstruction at any given point make this a truly stupendous affair. "Spontaneous Simplicity" is calmer, more psychedelic and, if we're not mistaken, there's a very early drum machine rambling on in the lower end of the mix, while "Love In Outer Space" finishes this off with Ra's own voice backed by a more traditional sway from the famous Arkestra.

In the words of label owner Stefan Knappe, this series has a "special concept embracing the unknown and could be seen as an interface between experimental music & cultural science, psychoanalysis and philosophy". Kevin Trappeniers aka Kreng was artist in residence TAKT Dommelhof in 2014 and created the dance performance SELFED which premiered at Plesni Teater Ljubljana, Slovenia. These three recordings taken from the performance create some sombre yet seductive atmosphere, a combination of neo-classical and dark ambient with some fascinating textures, field recordings and sound design involved which definitely begs your attention.

That one went Top 10 in the USA and helped the album go double Platinum as well as taking them on tour of the States. On 28th May 1983 to celebrate the album, they played US Festival San Bernadino. Bored With The US Festival is the legendary live recording of the broadcast from that night with all the best moments from Combat Rock as well as impromptu live interactions. It proved to be the swansong for Mick Jones, who was fired from the band shortly after.

You Are Alone (13:54)
Review: Not necessarily the album title everyone needs in the winter, let alone the winter of a particularly difficult 2020, but given the overall feeling of Moljebka Pvlse's powerful two-track release the cold and unapologetic name makes perfect sense. The whole thing is dense with dark moodiness, packing intent and a sense of the unsettling into every second.

Talk about tension, opening with 'In Love & Death' there's more than a sense of subtle dread to the organ refrains and murmured, muffled vocal chants. The pressure builds over the course of the arrangement, finally subsiding to leave us on the sparse chords of 'You Are Alone', a piece that slowly develops from those initial disorienting but delicate chords into something much more sinister. An incredibly powerful trip from the Swedish master-experimenters.

Now the Grau series continues with plenty of dubbed out electronics from the off: opener 'Margin' is a slow and heavy one, with chords rippling over the face of a lumpy kick drum, 'Scope' then has frostier synths and a dubwise vocal praising jah and pacing about the mix and 'LIMBIC' then sinks you in deep to serene synth modulations and rolling drums that cannot fail to enter you into a state of pure mindfulness. 'Utils' closes out on a more uptempo rhythm with double kicks and pulsing subs locking you in.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged and slight surface marks on records, but otherwise in excellent condition***

Nine years is probably more than a hiatus really. By that point people are starting to wonder if you will ever try and make a come back. Wire did just that in 1999 after vanishing with plenty of impressive traces in 1990. In 2001, they set about putting out five records, Twelve Times You, Read and Burn 01, Read and Burn 02, Send, and finishing with PF456 Redux. The latter compared both Read and Burn EPs, alongside the full Send album, on vinyl. Sadly, technical limitations meant this had to be shortened versions of the tracks, hence the PF456 title, referring to both catalogue number and process.

It's not all bad news, though, because this means that almost two decades on we get PF456 Deluxe, which is basically the collection but without what the band described as "brutal edits". Longer, far more commanding and immersive as a result, it's still just as post punkish, punk-rooted, riff-y, original and utterly danceable.

'Obi Baa Wiase' and 'Sika Be Ba' are two tracks with a close-knit message of gratitude, hope and faith between them, with the former being the staple track of Crentsil's long career after being played at weddings, festivals, and live concerts by local bands. A pair of incredible tracks produced by Charles Amoah utilising limited equipment to create an authentic party atmosphere, jovial flutes and plucky strings are the accompaniment to A.B. Entsils's proclamation of joy - put this on at the party and the room are sure to start moving.

Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

This time they look to the legendary Spanish techno titan Oscar Mulero and fellow mainstay Umwelt for a pair of true blistering cuts. 'Taste The Rope' has brutal, blistering and distorted drums pummelling away while mysterious pads up top speak of an astral voyage. It was initially recorded between Vienna and New York in 2004 and 2006 with each artist responding to the other's compositions. Accompanying text says that the record fuses "unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition." In short, it is a powerful ambient album with a quiet but devastating artistry. Heavy chords linger in the air, distant shakers take your mind away, foggy atmospheres are run through with gentle winds. It is beautifully melancholic.

This new series aims to shine a light on what was never known as a soul scene in the county, but could have been given the wealth of great material produced in a small space of time in the years in question. Most of the sounds never made it out of Hungary but that all changes now. Zsuzsa's two cuts on this 10" are her best ever - 'Puha Sohajok' is sensual but tight and 'Ne Nezz A Napba' is lovely soft soul. The other two cuts are similarly essential making this a fine gateway into this little known scene.
