Pimping People In High Places (Woodword Ave alternative mix) (6:51)
The Medusa Touch (6:51)
Review: The Det 313 label is kicking off the new year with a bang and dropping a pair of brilliant new EPs on the same day in late January. This one is a reissue of the esteemed Gary Martin's 'Pimping People In High Places' on 10". It's the Woodword Ave alternative mix that kicks off and is a rough and ready percussive techno looper with hefty basslines underlapping and propping up the floor. 'The Medusa Touch' is a more wily and synth laced-late night jaunt with mystic energy and acid details that make it a deep and dramatic cut with real dynamism.

Review: Greyscale unveils its latest endeavour, the Spectrum Series, as a way to continue to evolve its offerings and this time it is with something that makes a vibrant departure from its traditional black-and-white aesthetic. The inaugural release features the iconic Lithuanian dub track 'Kasdienybes Sventykla' by grad_u & Eazystyle MC as a way of commemorating its 15th anniversary. It came as a double CD in 2011 but now gets a first vinyl pressing on a nice 10" slab of wax. The track itself taps into the earliest roots of dub in the 70s and traces a line through the 80s with its heavyweight drums and endlessly echoing bass topped by great mic work. A pared-back instrumental features on the flip of this latest crucial drop from the dub dons at Greyscale

It's a new outlet that will specially tap into the sounds of 90s jungle and serve up new tunes on 10". Tim Reaper has been behind one, and Eusebeia is now on this one on blue-marbled vinyl. A-side cut 'Waveform 05' is a cavernous cut with pulsing bass and spine chillingly ethereal vocals up top while 'Waveform 06' keeps the pressure on with more throwback jungle realness and unrelenting breakbeat pressure.

Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

On his latest release, he joins the Too Slow To Disco Edits series with four tracks of smooth and groovy disco edits. He reworks some classic and obscure gems from the late 70s and early 80s, adding his signature touch of warmth and soul. Review: Felt may not have made the longest lasting impact on the common conscious, but nevertheless the UK indie set struck a real chord, and are still widely seen as cult icons among those who know. As part of the deserved celebrations for equally revered label Cherry Red's 45th anniversary, we can now dive into one of the band's finest moments, with this double-A 45" single. Opening on 'Primitive Painters' it doesn't take long to realise where we are on the sonic scale. Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser in a duet with frontman Lawrence, it's rightly considered one of the great British singles of the 1980s and one of the decade's most powerful collaborations, saturated in shoegaze and dream pop while still being resolutely part of a New Wave. Meanwhile, 'Penelope Tree' on the flip opts for a janglier but no less epic feeling.

They say they are on a mission to dive deep into the menacing world of early 90s jungle and cook up tunes reminiscent of that era and then serve them up lovely slabs of 10" wax. Review: The 11th Barefoot beats is another hugely effective disco 12" with two well purposed cuts. JKriv & Dicky Trisco link up first for 'Mae Do Mar,' a tune that has you dreaming of warmer climes, sandy beaches and sunny skies. It's an airy cut with a tropical percussive line, hints of Latin flair and breezy vocals. Flip it over and the temperature goes up a notch - Bernardo Pinheiro's 'Xango' is a superbly soulful and heartwarming groover. The chords are draped elegantly over the busy funky bass and the vocals are chants that draw your attention and get you in a trance.

Complementing his rapid fire chats with equally thundering amens, it's got reload written into every red groove. He has a knack for sound design and crafting such powerful kicks that his tunes are always irresistible to both DJs and dancers. He offers up two more high grade weapons here for the second release on Beard Man. First is the maximal minimalism of the bendy 'Loop 132' with its glitchy hits and undulating synths, then comes the more driving and uplifting dub techno banger 'Loop 131.' Review: There are no specific credits behind this drop on Dutch label Planet Rhythm, but someone has decided to take one of Nina Simone's most powerful musical moments, 'Sinnerman', and create a great big peak time techno monster out of it. The original version bristles with tension, not least thanks to Simone's dexterous piano work, and the looping quality of those keys certainly foreshadowed the cyclical nature of club music. It's not hard to see why the song inspires energy in a club setting, and on this one-track single-sided 12" you can hear Simone's creation chopped up, sampled and strapped to a thunderous kick.

Here it is a deeply mystic techno 10" by Deadbeat. Back in July, he worked with Sa Pa on their first collaborative album on the anniversary of BLKRTZ's 50th release and what a stunner it was. Here he casts free and deep into an oceanic abyss with drum-less floating currents and drifting melodies on 'Things Fall Apart' then a more hunched and dynamic dub groove on 'Adieu Chez Cherie.'

It's a collection of artists serving up the originals while the label's own in-house production outfit offer up their own dubs. Joseph Lalibela's 'Jah Kingdom Come' kicks off with chest-beating chords over clean digi-dub synthesis with big horns and vocals up top. Their most notable 12" - aside from maybe 1981's 'Merry Christmas' was 'Kunte Kinte' earlier in the same year. It is a bit of a collector's fav that has more than held its value over the ensuing 40+ years. Driven by lazy dub swagger and carefree keys, it's a lovers rock outing peppered with toms and hits and plenty of echoing depths. This is another quality outing for fans of straight up, no frills jungle. We're glad to hear some new music from the long time Kompakt legend and co-founder and once again it's not what you would expect. 'Allein' is a downbeat piece with oriental melodies and gently plucked strings over warm bass. It's not for the club, that is for sure, but the flip side version 'Allein In Italien' sure is. Forever ahead of the game, Hidden Agenda's role in leftfield jungle soul has been undeniable and hugely influential since the mid-90s and it's amazing to see Jason back now and on such a maverick edge. Both of these cuts hit with a unique vibe and flavour that's so refreshing to hear. 'Dust' is a psychedelic wonderland that slides along with shimmering layers of percussion, guitar and keys. 'Cruel Sea' takes things a little darker as an edgy, unpredictable drive takes the lead. Think Krust's recent work on Crosstown Rebels and you're on the right planet. AKO Beatz never miss a punch.

Originally available on the label's Bandcamp site, now the first volume is pressed up on 10" for some deck-based air time. 'Tears (Fantazia Version)' on the A-side leads with a sad-eyed r&b sample and some lingering piano, but when the drop comes its pure Reese power with a slant towards d&b rather than the jungle DMC's more commonly associated with. 'Rinsa' on the flip is a rowdy slice of Mentasm trickery - the perfect counterpoint to the lead track's solemn vibe.

There's a dense quality to the tracks as sounds in the foreground roll over audible shapes in the distance in a humming, organic fashion. While the ideas tend to be simple ones, there are more than enough layers to this album to reward repeated in-depth listening, working myriad found sounds into the mix alongside plucked instruments and considered synth deployment for an overall ambient but captivating cocktail of modern, rustic electronica.

Shadowy label boss Tusk has seemingly been looking to get the duo involved since the Tusk Wax operation began in earnest in 2011 and this two track release sees Coyote veer slightly off their usual path on the lead track. "Dubwise" is true to its name, sending the voice of legendary dub poet Mutabaruka cascading around a rugged mutant soundsystem groove, whilst "Temple Bell" adopts a softer approach, with all manner of rich flavours, lush synths and lazy rhythms hidden deep beneath thick sheen of reverb. Review: Firecracker's reputation has been based on pairing some classy deep house and disco productions with the kind of mouth watering art work that sends "hand to wallet" brainwaves coursing through your body. They kind of took it to an amusing extreme with the upfront edition of this Fudge Fingas heavy 10", which was clearly released to test the limits of feverish collectors. All manner of screen printed sleeves and inner sleeves and "authentic Ettore Sottsass 1982 printed fabric bag" clearly did the trick as all 46 copies now sit proudly in collections across the land. This being Firecracker, you could hardly call the full release of Untytled a "bog standard" edition with some rather pretty printed art sealed in a polythene bag. Music wise, two Fudge Fingas originals sandwich Linkwood getting the Fudge Fingas treatment with the effervescent, dusty business of the title track the clear winner for us!

Originally released as part of Aeroplane's ambitious debut LP We Can't Fly, the Merry Clayton featuring "I Don't Feel" had never been remixed before the Swiss producer was invited to rework it as part of the exhaustive, multi disc ten year anniversary Eskimonde compilation from the seminal Belgian imprint. No doubt the track had previously remained untouched due to Clayton's powerful vocal turn which melded perfectly with Vito De Luca's rubbery Hi NRG production, but you can't fault the way that Deetron has reworked it, laying down an extended intro that burns with intensity before dropping a thumping, precision tooled beat. A previously unreleased Instrumental version adds some heat on the flip.

Review: In advance of his forthcoming album for Nation, multi-genre specialist James T Cotton teams up with label boss Traxx under their infrequent Saturn V collaborative project on this jet black ten that's backed with a Traxx & D'Marc Cantu collab. "The Fresh Heir" is filled with waves of live synth patterns expertly weaved over a relentless techno rhythm and it's the inherent musicality shown throughout that makes it something special. "Modern", the B Side trip from Traxx and DMC, is a bleep heavy warehouse jacker filled with thrilling John Carpenter synth washes and underpinned by ever so slightly unnerving acid vocals.

2099 Dub
Review: Bizzy B continues his journey into neo-rave with 4 heavy new tracks across 2 x 10" on Planet Mu. Lead track 'Creation' twists the Amen and Mentasm together into a Escher-like contorted riff while the MCs exhortations of "When The Crowd Says Rewind!" and "Bizzy B!!" before it goes all dub interlude... 'Deep, Dark and Nastie' is just that, 'Bless This Sound' features the heaviest Amen created in conjunction with none other than Equinox (with edits supplied by blast from the past TDK), rounded off with '2099 Dub' reprising '1099 Dub' which was rinsed on dub back in 94.

Dam Funk - "Night Stroll"
Dam Funk - "3012 Luv Affair"
Computer Jay - "Phantom"
Computer Jay - "Vice"
Computer Jay - "Rare Type"
Review: Round seven of All City's highly collectable ten inch series drops with perhaps the most impressive pairing to date. Dam Funk needs little introduction to anyone with a passing interest in fine music, and the Stones Throw funkateer displays all his unique talent on the two tracks that plaster the A Side. It's easy to visualise the woozy synth led snap of "Night Stroll" sound tracking a twilight sojourn through the hilly surrounds of Silverlake LA. Complementing this is the low slung sexx funk of "3012 Luv Affair", with Dam in full on organ wig-out mode. On the flip Computer Jay drops three tracks of heavy percussive heat with opener "Phantom" betraying the punk-funk intro with a spectral beatdown characterised by reverberant breaks. "Vice" showcases Jay's ease with intricate drum programming and is augmented by a fuzzed out 8 bit melody, while the oscilatting analogue drama of "Rare Type" proves to be brilliantly different.

Acid Andy - "Jack Dawson Polka"
Axel Boman - "My Dirty Laundry"
Review: The Studio Barnhus imprint run by Axel Boman, Petter Nordkvist and Kornel Kovacs reaches release number three with a cheeky yellow 10". Up first is label boss Boman, whose "Dirty Laundry" offers another glimpse into what is developing into his signature style - classic deep house atmospherics imbued with a carefree sense of fun. The young Swedish producer has already been taken under the wing of DJ Koze, who welcomed him to the Pampa family with open arms; expect big things from Axel in the coming months. Proceedings on the flipside are chaired by fellow Swede Acid Andy (aka Andreas Jonsson), who offers up "Jack Dawson Polka" - a driving acid disco workout dripping with sweat that reminds us of In Flagranti in their pomp. Check it!

Golden Dusk (Scott Grooves & Kataconda Panther version)
Golden Dusk (Scott Grooves & Kataconda Panther beats)
Review: Belgium label Curle released "Golden Dusk" from German artist Frank Martiniq in 2010 on 300 limited golden vinyls, selling out more or less instantly. Now in 2011 the deep techno cut is back, this time reworked by US deep house master Scott Grooves and Kataconda. "Panther Version" is dusky and warm from the offset, with low synths crawling and prowling seductively behind metallic and tightly sprung hi's. "Panther Beats" on the flip opens with and focuses on complex drums and beats, manipulated and worked to their full potential. Rapid hats, sharp cymbals and heavy kicks and patterns stream through in a captivating manner.

The Journey (Scott Grooves & Kataconda Panther remix)
The Journey (Scott Grooves beats)
Review: Norm Talley's "The Journey" is somewhat of a modern day Detroit classic. A secret weapon of many, it's been a staple within record bags since its first release in May 2009. Scott Grooves is one of those, and in true Grooves style, he's done an edit of it. The difference with "The Journey" though, is that this the first of his countless edits he's actually released to the record buying public. "Panther Remix" is an endearingly low slung, subtle take on Norm's original made by Grooves and Kataconda. Rolling percussion and progressing chords envelope from the offset, and get increasingly endearing as the track chugs along. "Panther" is irresistibly mellow whilst retaining its Detroit house appeal. Flipping over, the Scott Grooves Beats version focuses on the hollow beat of the percussion, honing in on a breathtakingly simple loop.
