Way Back When (feat Esther Durin - Halogenix remix) (5:07)
Review: Get unstuck with these two delicious refixes from Unglued's debut 2021 album Interplanetary Radio as two of the most highly respected beat carvers apply their scalpels to one of Hospital's most exciting new-generation stars. The ravey 'Total XTC' is perfect fodder for Exit's Fixate as he winds up the 4x4s and laces it with his own special hardcore essence. The super sweet soul of 'Way Back When' is also a perfect fit for its remixer as Halogenix brings a whole new hazy shade to the dreamy vibes. Far out.

The Three Sisters
Vasbacken
Sultan
Brandon Bay - Farewell (Shoreline remix)
Review: Swedish travelling minstrel, Rickard Jäverling, returns to lavish upon us further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. Spinning Scandinavian wordless folk-songs seems like second nature for Jäverling, and these tracks show quite perfectly his unique skills. Beginning with 'Three Sisters' (which also featured on his recent 'Two Times Five Lullaby' album) we're off to an explosive start; a 21st century hoedown with eyes fixed on frozen Northern European fields rather than rickety Pennsylvanian barns. With banjo, drums and guitar, Jäverling and his band manage to distil a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence and blend it with the traditional folk sounds that seem to have made their way into the mainstream once more. Side A is rounded off with the shimmering and beautiful 'Västbacken', a hazy instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining moment however comes on the flipside with the 7 minute epic 'Sultan'. It's hard to imagine a track more life affirming than this, which takes the Chicago post-rock formula and re-contextualises it for 2006, giving us something both reflective and quietly jubilant. Finishing off the disc are fellow Yesternow artists, Shoreline, who have ushered Jäverling into their ever-growing family and contributed a 'remix' which takes the original track and injects it with a sense of fun and playful abandon. 'The Three Sisters EP' adds yet further weight to the growing Yesternow catalogue, and is more proof of the subtle and measured talents of Rickard Jäverling.

Review: Ride guitarist and songwriter Andy Bell drops this blue-splattered 10" with covers and acoustic versions of tunes that are said to have inspired his last album Flicker, which was released on Sonic Cathedral to great acclaim back in February. It is one of three such EPs and this one features an opening track written by Yoko Ono, a second cut by Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Danny Thompson, Terry Cox and Jacqui McShee, one by Raymond Douglas Davies and a closer by the late, great Arthur Russell. He brings his unique alternative and indie perspective to the originals and they serve as a great backstory and accompanying listen to the aforementioned album.

Review: The Earlies release 'Gone For The Most Part', out on the Names label. It is the final piece of the Five-Part 10" series that completes the vinyl version of the fantastic album 'The Enemy Chorus'. These songs show the band at their most cinematic soaring above the high rise buildings and into the clouds then collapsing into a monster funk jam before descending into the angular dark prog of 'Bad Is As Bad Does'. The band toured throughout Europe in 2007 and played a storming set on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in June.

Answer (Rob Smith remix)

Answer: Lullaby (Sledgehead remix)
Lullaby Dub (Sledgehead remix)
Answer (DJ Pinch remix)
Review: Rarely does a set of remixes unite such a disparate set of genres as roots reggae, dubstep, techno and cosmic balearica with such
effortless aplomb as this red hot 10" plate from out of Bristol town. Suitably, it's been burning holes in premier league sound systems
through recent weeks: Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti for instance - as well as providing the climactic moment of Pinch's recent, much
discussed and widely sought after 'dubstep meets techno' mix for the wonderful Mary Anne Hobbes' show on Radio 1. Andy Scholes
of Henry & Louis recorded the original, yearning Tony Tuff vocal to 'Answer' during the mid-nineties at the legendary Channel One,
Kingston Town - one of the holiest of studio spaces in Jamaica. Tuff's pedigree since the early classic African Brothers' sides such
as 'Righteous Kingdom' is beyond question, and here the loops and arcs of his vocal taps into that same spiritual feeling, as he sends
out 'a message to all corners of the earth'. Rob Smith of More Rockers fame stays true to this heritage for his remix, like the long term,
dyed in the wool true roots man he is, underpinning the Prince Far-I echoes of Prince Green's inspirational DJ delivery with considerable
bass pressure. Ras Stryka Dread's mix ascribes a fluid digital reggae low end flow to proceedings which should fairly sing on the more
digitally inclined systems. The flip holds two delicious wild cards - The Cure's 'Lullaby' is yanked out of the doom-laden surroundings of
the classic 'Disintegration' album and injected with some delightful and surprising sunshine vibes, Sledgehead running vocal and dub
remixes which could well become defining sunset records for the summer we're all hoping may well yet arrive. Which leaves a seismic
Pinch remix to completely rush the sound - unpacking the crucial yard credentials atop a skeletal, rigorous stepper - proper uptempo
dancefloor material with a deadliest floor covering bass hum which should only come to true life on the sturdiest, largest systems, it
concludes a totally essential ep in bravura fashion. 'Answer' is out on 2 Kings.

Review: So, who is this mysterious Afefe Iku? After absolutely destroying the dancefloors all year long with his infamous bootleg of Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place", which he smartly put out in extremely limited amounts of vinyl around the same time his mentor, Osunlade, featured his cover of that very same song on BBE's "Exit Music: Songs With Radio Heads". In all honesty Afefe remains a mystery even to us. So, let us start by saying who Afefe isn't. Unfortunately, for those who thought he was Osunlade, you are mistaken, but don't feel ashamed, because Afefe creates at Osunlade´s studio in Santorini, which makes sense to pinpoint him as Osunlade. Afefe is a very quiet man. Like our lost brother, J Dilla, Afefe wants his music to do the talking. And this is exactly what we're going to do. "Body Drummin" is exactly what it is. A percussion heavy track strictly for the dancefloor, its organic, yet techy-tinged feel brings such an urgency to move your hips that we would only recommend this for playing after midnight. Of course, if you insist, be our guests.

Tanzmann completely deconstructs 'Our Rhythm' and turns it into a crunchy reduced house weapon with relentless bassline pressure and a techy heads-down appeal. TLB's remix adds dirtier edges and intricate percussion to the original, resulting in a wicked tech-house offering.

"Motherland" is sharp beats and stabbing rhythms symbolizing the chaos and anger during the abduction of slaves in Africa. Domingo
Review: They're back! 5 years after "La Revancha Del Tango", and even more from the very first 10", Gotan Project are coming again with a new album entitled "Lunatico". Here's the first 10" out of it, offering the same & very unique recipe, yet slightly different. "Diferente" is the first single & leaves nothing wanting on the dancefloor. The number's driven by a bass loop that carries a lusty melody piped out by Cristina Vilallonga, while the strings play a dramatic supporting role. The irresistible tension builds into a crescendo with a hint of Bandoneon, a sprinkling of piano notes and other sounds lurking in a dark and murky atmosphere. "Domingo'' refers to Domingo Cura, the Argentine percussionist that Gotan Project was planning to record with, and a major source of inspiration for them. But as life would have it, he passed away a few months before the session. So instead the skilful Facundo Guevara pays homage to him with an intricacy of complex rhythms. On top of this, we hear the raspy voice of Afro-Argentine Jimi Santos pronouncing the numerous African words that pepper the world of tango: "Milonga, Candombe & Quilombo"!

Review: Some truly original and pleasantly soulful drum and bass from Dutchman Lenzman. "More Than I Can Take" keeps to a rigid half-pace but doesn't suffer from any loss of excitement thanks to some brilliant drum sequences. The mood is kept intense with some ominous synth pads and chopped female vocals. The appropriately named "Silhouette" features on the flipside and Lenzman lets loose with the drums a little more, whilst still preserving a uniquely soulful and - dare we say - IDM flavour. Definitely a must-hear tune if you like your D&B with a progressive edge.

Review: Dustin Zahn's mix of "Kinda High Auf Und Ab" leads this release on Chris Liebing's imprint and it's a real techno treat. The vocals from the original are processed and looped stunningly over the top of a moody and hypnotic beat that maintains its momentum perfectly throughout the tune. Alex Bau's "Arctica" is also included, and it's again made up of all the classic components - dark rumbling bass and ear-piercing hats that show no mercy.

Volume 3 sees the house music polemicist present live versions of tracks that were part of Electronics, his 2008 collaboration with conceptual German noise orchestra Zeitkratzer. Recorded in Berlin, Sprinkles drops live acoustic versions of "Down Home Kami - Sakunobe" and "Hobo Train" which stretch the concepts of what passes for deep house brilliantly. This is resolutely not music you'd bang in a warehouse at 2am and is a marked contrast to the deranged Moodymannisns of the recent House Explosion Vol 2 but Sprinkles fans will love this.

Whether you're looking to gear your groove deep or to keep the dancefloor full, "Wata" will satisfy your thirst. The original track can be found here in all its progressive beauty. The b-side contains an all-out minimal techno re-rub, much like what you would hear Richie Hawtin drop from his Minus label. As swirling sound effects surround the listener, plodding drums make for a particularly punchy and trippy late-night ride. Review: New Ethereal vibes straight out of Russia! Unknown artist SH2000 marks the 22nd release for the label and it comes as a fresh addition to their already impressive catalogue. "Good News" is a wonky, acid-laden house excursion with sharp breakbeats and a studious arrangement of polyphony and effects. Over on the flip, Yuri Shulgin takes care of the remix and emphasises the disconnection between the breakbeats to full effect. It almost sounds like a dub version of the original and it's exactly the sort of thing which we like to hear. Exquisite productions from a great independent label!

Review: While there might be something no-nonsense about the tools MS has at their disposal for the latest Rawax emission, and there's certainly no nonsense to be found in the track titles ("Get Down 1, 2 and 3" respectively), there's actually a sophistication at work that belies the rugged Chicagoisms of the production values. "Get Down 1" especially bubbles and soothes with a dense bed of synths that call to mind the finest aqueous ambient tracks. "Get Down 2" is far more primal with its sparse drums n' bass refrain, while "Get Down 3" is equally direct albeit with a more angular funk to the beats.

This Side Of Sunshine
Review: Killer debut turn on Mr Zap's Ethereal Sounds label from Miruga, last seen appearing on the appropriately named Drift Deeper label at the turn of 2012. Ethereal Sound completists will gladly add the Human Tube EP to their collection, with the two tracks from the Japanese producer a perfect fit for the label's aesthetic. Commencing with freeform percussive touches cascading around the channels, the title track eventually settles into a thick set groove, with a glacial sheen somehow keeping a lid on the many layers of texture and found sound that Miruga packs inbetween. It has that dual sensation of busy and calm that punctuates so much Ethereal Sound output and is complemented by the facedown business of "This Side Of Sunshine", a bonafide entry into deep house authenticity. A central playful axis between stop start piano samples caked in vinyl crackle and equally dusty drums is complemented by some well judged chord shimmers that remain just within ear shot - you can picture Peterson investing in fresh pants at the mere prospect of playing this one.

Review: As Audio Injection's Truncate alias continues to gather momentum, this self-manned label plays home to his most personal no-nonsense techno. It doesn't take long to get your head around the premise of the two version of "Bodega"; there's a simple and direct approach at work even if the production itself has many layers to it. "Bodega V1" sports a nasty looping synth phrase which slowly opens up throughout the track, while the rock solid rhythm gets bolstered by claps dropped for maximum jacking potential. "Bodega V2" contorts that central phrase ever so slightly, and ups the ante on the claps, yet the final result feels somehow more restrained than its counterpart.

Review: Following the "Detroit Beatdown", known better as Theo Parrish 'Falling Up' (Carl Craig remix), comes the next vinyl release in the first chapter of Detroit Beatdown. Released as a limited 10", this EP demonstrates the housier, jazzier side to Third Ear's Detroit Beatdown project. Even so, these are kicking tracks, typical of all dance floor orientated music that comes out of Detroit, with deep grooving bass lines and great drum programming. Side-A is Amp Fiddler, using his Amp Dog Knight moniker, and Jovante working together. Amp Fiddler needs no introduction. His distinctive voice and keys keep the vibe set by Malik Alston with his own piano flourishes. Amp's wah-wah electric piano is a dope sound, and works brilliantly on this track. Jovante is a talented newcomer on the Detroit scene. Jovante adds live drum programming, live timbales, and flute. Together, Amp and Jovante give the track a grooving, carnival feel. Malik Alston contributes additional production. Side-B is Malik Pittman from 3 Chairs giving Darren Abrams' "Loose Piano" a work over. The original track on Detroit Beatdown Volume One, was many people's favourite, and this remix displays a wonderful loose piano riff, with pumping bass and glitchy percussion. The track is perfect for building the vibe and getting those first hands in the air on the dancefloor.

Review: Caparacara's fine ode to Giallo horror soundtracks was originally released last summer on the Seed X Part 3 compilation, and here it migrates to another splendid and vastly underrated UK imprint, Fine Art. Hopefully, this transition will belatedly endow the track with the recognition it deserves as "Panic Beats" is every bit as exciting as anything you might find on the recent and critically acclaimed Giza EP from Gatekeeper. An expert melding of hefty industrial textures, haunting chords, ever twisting electronic arpeggios atop a punishing EBM beat, it's a track that bears repeat listening. Diskjokke steps up to remix the track, seeming to revel in the menacing origins; crafting a reimagination filled with dizzying showers of percussion, amidst which an ever changing backdrop of gristly acid stabs and soaring heavily funked organ riffs. It's this menacing and schizophrenic rhythmic thrust that ensures this record sits well beyond the realms of pedestrian nu discoism.

Review: This is the fourth in a sequence of reggae or house recordings with singer Paul St Hilaire. Again continuity in the groove and the sound sphere is provided with this release. A dub version is included on the B-Side.
