Review: Jeff Mills is on a serious roll with his Millsart releases, indulging the mystical, jazz-tinted sound of his Every Dog Has Its Day series across a run of 12"s which have included the outstanding Inner Eye, Don't Ask Me Why and Morning Glory in the past year alone. The original version of 'Vernacular Objects' appeared on a 2020 digital release, and now Mills has re-versioned it alongside three new tracks which continue the heady brew of simmering percussive meditation and elevated keys hitting subtle discord and curious harmony interplay for that extra-terrestrial Millsian touch.

Review:  There is a reason Mark Broom is still so revered in techno circles after all these years. He has a knack for sound design and crafting such powerful kicks that his tunes are always irresistible to both DJs and dancers. He offers up two more high grade weapons here for the second release on Beard Man. First is the maximal minimalism of the bendy 'Loop 132' with its glitchy hits and undulating synths, then comes the more driving and uplifting dub techno banger 'Loop 131.' The titles of these tunes make you wonder just how many of these this man has sitting on his computer ready to go.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Ancient Methods - "Accept Light" (6:06)
Umwelt - "Shades Of Obscurity" (5:42)
Review: There is no messing when it comes to the techno served up by Umwelt's essential Rave Or Die. Over the course of 14 previous EPs the label has dropped rib-rattling, brain boggling bangers aimed squarely at the floor. This time out the boss himself steps up with Ancient Methods with each providing one solo track. This one comes on limited 10" picture disc so is an extra special one to add to the collection Ancient Methods's 'Accept Light' is a harshly textured industrial banger and Umwelt's 'Shades of Security' is just as caustic and hard edged.

Slow (8:09)
Justify My Love (7:31)
Review: Whoever is behind these STEDIT drops is striking upon pure gold, bringing a legitimately underground techno crunch to the pop edit practice. Having previously tackled the likes of Brandy & Monica and Ultra Nate, now two of the biggest pop divas of all time are getting some low down and dirty reworkings which tread the fine balance between earworm familiarity and the heads down moodiness of a locked-in dancefloor. 'Slow' becomes a slippery acid abstraction peppered with all kinds of sonic freakery, while 'Justify My Love' becomes a brooding, steadfast workout tipped towards the minimal crowd.

How Are We Doing?
A Second Earth
Review: ** REPRESS ** The ever excellent D'Marc Cantu serves up this two track re-entry on MOS DEEP which serves as an enticing prelude to the producer's eagerly awaited debut album (of sorts) which is due later this year. Across both sides of the hand stamped ten inch Cantu demonstrates the ease with which he can work vintage, driving Chicago house rhythms and more emotive, utopian visions of machine made sounds. Lead track "How Are We Doing?" is the former, with wide reaching analogue thrusts gradually being joined by soaring strings over a driving jack groove. Our favourite however is the B Side "A Second Earth", a blissful saunter through laidback melodic touches and skittering rhythms that could go for infinity and not lose its charm.

Butch
Review: Ultramarine may not be one of the most familiar names on people's lips, but it's promising to see the UK house veterans return on WNCL. "Acid" bubbles into action with aqueous flecks of synth and a lean broken beat provide the crust to a molten 303 filling. Rarely has that well-worn sound come on so expressive and fluid as it oozes in amidst the laid back funk of the track. "Butch" meanwhile goes further out into the otherworldly realms that Ultramarine inhabits. The 303 is back again, in a more perfunctory role alongside all manner of sci-fi bleeps and squeaks. Highly recommended.

Earth 2 Moon
Man On The Moon (extended version)
Review: Having debuted on Thema with the finely judged quartet of tracks that made up Transmissions, Norm Talley returns to the label with a ten inch shaped sequel. Anyone who checked out Transmissions will no doubt have wished Talley treated your ears to more of "Man On The Moon" than the three minutes the EP opener afforded. Thankfully a gracefully extended variant of that track which is three times longer (and thus three times better!) lines up on the B Side. Ahead of that Talley indulges in some expertly crafted explorations through rippling, utopian techno on "Earth 2 Moon", which locks into a vicious groove once those rattling hi-hats drop!

Atopic (Lag remix)
69:02
Review: Sect's third and final sampler for the It's All For You compilation ends on a bittersweet note, seeing the last release from Sect favourite Grovskopa, who has decided to retire following the closest of near death experiences. The A-Side features Lag's remix of his Sect classic "Atopic", reworking the lurching bass and broken-beat rhythms of the original into a hypnotic number with a fractured synth melody. The B-Side sees "2:69", a brittle yet powerful track with churning bass which recalls Drexciya's classically hard edged approach, combined with hazy orchestral sweeps - a fitting swansong for a great producer.

Jolka - "Life Is Changing"
Casual Violence - "Acceptance Of The Fact At Hand"
Review: The second vinyl sampler showcasing some of the highlights from Sect's recent compilation It's All For You sees Croatia's Jolka and Manchester's Casual Violence share the billing on this fantastic 10", pairing two huge tracks that feel like two sides of the same coin. Jolka's "Life Is Changing" is the more overtly bright of the two, utilising a jagged arpeggio and bright stabs which provide an intensly hypnotic backdrop to the track's monolithic beats. On the flipside, Casual Violence's "Acceptance Of The Fact At Hand" operates on a slightly more subtle level - its sweeping strings and soothing melody deceive you into thinking the track is lighter than it is, but the thundering kicks and concise percussion tell a different story, creating what is an organic, cavernous composition filled with rich textural nuance.

Manuela (Mark Ernestus dub)
Review: Compared to the freeform styles of the Leave Talking 10", the star spot on Rocket Juice & The Moon's "Manuela" by Erykah Badu drives the free-flowing funk of the supergroup (made up of Damon Albarn, Flea and Tony Allen) into a cheeky and mildly dubby pop nugget with a shuffly rhythm to it. Badu is on fine form as ever, lending her coolly delivered-tones to the stripped down track in that disarmingly natural way of hers. Mark Ernestus gets drafted in for a dub version which may surprise his fans as the original remains thoroughly intact, especially in terms of the drums, instead focusing on the freeform synth warbles to provide the centre-point of the track.

Journeys End
Review: This Dalek Invasion 10" marks a superlative return to the Semantica label for Morphology, a Finnish duo who've making all the right noises with some select releases on Abstract Forms and Zyntax Motorcity. No clues as to who their favourite Doctor is, but the title track is filled with the sort of rippling electro funk they've carved a niche for on the aforementioned labels, rising from the mechanical mire into a crisp bout of 808s and midnight funk. Complementing this is the aptly titled "Journey's End" which is dominated by the infinitely spiralling circles of analogue colours which are squeezed out greedily over a rasping drum pattern like an overzealous cake decorator. Highly recommended!

Scarlet
Review: It's always a pleasure to see new dBridge material coming in and even more so when it's this darn good! The London-based neo-jungle legend has reasserted himself as a serious contender to the ever-changing world of club music in 2012 and this latest slab of wax for Jon Convex's label is a perfect translation of his drum & bass heritage into more modern contexts. The title track is a pouncing, half-step bomb complete with luscious vocals but it's all about the B here, where the burning bass line of "Scarlet" literally feels like an alteration of his past disciplines into a techno alternative.

Fade (G Vump remix)
Review: Jon Convex - otherwise known as Intsra:mental member Damon Kirkham, will be releasing his debut solo album very soon, but first he offers three tracks from the album via a gorgeous double 12" package. "Fade" is a big surprise - with forlorn male vocals singing over a backdrop of melancholy synths, only the tight 2-step drum pattern stops it sounding like a lost 80s synthpop classic. "New Model" meanwhile takes the mutated form of techno and bass Kirkham has been developing over the moniker with wobbling subs swinging underneath a firm 4/4 rhythm, while "Shadows" is a stripped back affair filled with rough synthetic rumblings, and contemporary rhythmic swagger. Finally G Vump - aka Brodinski and Guillaume of The Shoes - provide a unique dubstep inspired take on "Fade" filled with footwork referencing rhythms that has more than a bit in common with Kuedo's recent output.

Bodega V2
Review: As Audio Injection's Truncate alias continues to gather momentum, this self-manned label plays home to his most personal no-nonsense techno. It doesn't take long to get your head around the premise of the two version of "Bodega"; there's a simple and direct approach at work even if the production itself has many layers to it. "Bodega V1" sports a nasty looping synth phrase which slowly opens up throughout the track, while the rock solid rhythm gets bolstered by claps dropped for maximum jacking potential. "Bodega V2" contorts that central phrase ever so slightly, and ups the ante on the claps, yet the final result feels somehow more restrained than its counterpart.

How You Gonna Feel (Pedestrian remix)
Review: George Levings and Guy Brewer may be primarily known as a drum and bass act - and this release is issued on Goldie's Metalheadz label - but the remixes will undoubtedly endear them to other audiences. Pedestrian's version of "How You Gonna Feel" is as understated as it is atmospheric, with Spacek's dreamy vocals melting into a wall of dreamy textures and hissing, lithe breakbeats. Marcel Dettmann's remix of "Satellite Type 2" meanwhile is more upfront, with the Berghain resident laying down a relentless drum track and raw, twitchy bassline. Having said that, it's not as ass-quakingly intense as say "Apron", and the eerie organ riff midway through has echoes of Robert Hood at his menacing best.
