Kasdienybes Sventykla (vocal mix) (4:27)
Kasdienybes Sventykla (instrumental) (4:27)
Review: Greyscale unveils its latest endeavour, the Spectrum Series, as a way to continue to evolve its offerings and this time it is with something that makes a vibrant departure from its traditional black-and-white aesthetic. The inaugural release features the iconic Lithuanian dub track 'Kasdienybes Sventykla' by grad_u & Eazystyle MC as a way of commemorating its 15th anniversary. It came as a double CD in 2011 but now gets a first vinyl pressing on a nice 10" slab of wax. The track itself taps into the earliest roots of dub in the 70s and traces a line through the 80s with its heavyweight drums and endlessly echoing bass topped by great mic work. A pared-back instrumental features on the flip of this latest crucial drop from the dub dons at Greyscale

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Vade Mecum welcomes Soft Traffic for a debut release here and it is one that suggests the producer has a soft spot for the warm, deep and heady end of the dubbed out techno spectrum. Those are certainly all the words you would use to describe the quiet brilliance of opener 'Find Ya' (feat Prince Morella) which is icy cool and hypnotic. On the flipside, 'Night Drive' is another sublimely soft focus and supple techno roller with infinite horizons and milky pads that dissolve your soul. A superb debut.

Renegade Horns (Nookie remix) (6:35)

Review: Two of drum & bass' most rabid underdogs, Nookie and DJ Crystl, the latter returning only recently after a two decade hiatus - make a triumphant return to the foreground, joining Suburban Architecture in aid of the third edition of their Architecture Dubs series. A fresh fusion of old and new motifs, Nookie's remix of 'Renegade Horns' pays homage to a select juncture in the genre's evolution, recalling the era of "intelligent" drum & bass while nonetheless playing into the freshness and cleanliness that could only ever have surfaced after the 2010s. Crystl's version of 'New Horizons', meanwhile, is more refractive and dreamy, taking its required time to bask in its artisanal padwork, in contrast to its raw b-boy sample and frank Amen breaks.

Review: Vinyl only and lucky if we see one release a year; Moonshine's Dubwise Revolution always keeps us keen with their white label 10s. This is no exception. Crafted by an anonymous source, these spicy versions join the dots in a contemporary, high grade way. Sleng tenging it out with plenty of molten low end, 'Garnedd' brings the soul while 'Ghetto Living' slugs it out with swagger. Grab it while you can.

Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

Review: The Det 313 label is kicking off the new year with a bang and dropping a pair of brilliant new EPs on the same day in late January. This one is a reissue of the esteemed Gary Martin's 'Pimping People In High Places' on 10". It's the Woodword Ave alternative mix that kicks off and is a rough and ready percussive techno looper with hefty basslines underlapping and propping up the floor. 'The Medusa Touch' is a more wily and synth laced-late night jaunt with mystic energy and acid details that make it a deep and dramatic cut with real dynamism.

Review: Phoenix G is of course an alias for the universally claimed rightfully adored Mr G, one of the UK's most long-serving and accomplished underground servants. His views on the game (which you can find on his Instagram) are as worth hearing as his music which this time takes him to his own self-titled label once more. As always it is deep, raw, emotive stuff that stays low but is high on emotion, however subtle. 'What's That Sound V1' is a dubbed-out and grainy basement track with scruffy drums and shards of light breaking through a broken window, then V3 of the same cut has a little more synth detail. Superb.

Review: Get yourself poolside for a much-needed repress of this 2021 gem from Lips & Rhythm cool crew Bad Kids Beach Club. It's a poolside fever dream with one eye on the Balearics and the other on the astral plane, as Jesse Sizmo and Seb Hall unfurl a veritable barge of plush synths on your downtempo-hungry ears. '45 Degrees' is indeed a sizzler, while 'Del Arrecife' takes a more sultry, late night approach to the executive lounge. Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. The original on the A side is a treat enough, but then throw in a mercurial dubbed out version by Arp on the flip and you've got yourself a 12 inch portal to a most delightful dimension.

For this one, the in house crew takes care of a pair of sublime new sounds that take you to the ocean floor and keep you there. 'Echo From The Outer World' opens with gently echoing chords pacing about the mix over a rolling and rubbery low end with shards of light beaming down from above as if the sun has just shone through some clouds. Recorded in Berlin and remotely in 2023, opening track 'Abandon Ship (Martian Meltdown Mix)' runs at over 11 minutes and plays at 33 rpm. Review: Global Essence Sampler is a new series from Deep Inspiration Show Records that calls upon a fine roster of international producer talent to serve up one track each and reflect on what deep house is today. For Allstarr Motomusic the answer is smooth and cruising house grooves with elastic basslines and distant vocal wails. Barce explores classic Larry Heard-style cosmic melodic territory with plenty of star-gazing potential, and Zarenzeit's 'Zahara' is another one that floats amongst the stars with lush ambient pads. Jank offers a more dusty, rhythmic house sound for cosy backroom parties, and then come the jazzy melodies and soulful bass noodling of Jan Kincl's '3300 Gratiot Ave.' Magic stuff.

We're glad to hear some new music from the long time Kompakt legend and co-founder and once again it's not what you would expect. 'Allein' is a downbeat piece with oriental melodies and gently plucked strings over warm bass. It's not for the club, that is for sure, but the flip side version 'Allein In Italien' sure is. Review: Suburban Architecture is a project from Chris Read and James Curry which seeks to explore the expressive potential of drum & bass as a vessel for soulful musicality and rolling pressure alike. Carrying the torch from atmospheric d&b and the approachable tones of the Hospital Records crew, their latest 10" finds them turning to veritable legends for remixes which cement the angle they're exploring. Blame is up first, reworking 'Visions '96' in his own mould of melancholy, heart-rending composition strapped to the crispest of beats. 'Future Jazz '95' finds DJ Trace taking up the mantle and serving another masterclass in mellow, introspective d&b as pliable for the dancefloor as it is suited to home-listening reveries.

Review: A 10-inch vinyl release from the mysterious Jane in Palma - allegedly one of the many solo aliases of producer Julian Smith - who opens up a fresh series from the WMCL Recordings label. 'Arabs Version' and, on the reverse, 'Mixup Blender', are pair of heavy modern breaks and dubstep cuts respectively, with the former following the tradition of 'Hackney Parrot' or 'Trigger Finger' and the latter laying down a punkish, industrial steppers' forward-march, in which the satisfying shift of cut-up drum samples and vocal stop-starts are heard loud and clear.

They are all coming on tidy 10" eco vinyl in mad limited numbers and next up is Norman Connors and Bembe Segue. Connors dropped his superb 'Mother of the Future' in 1975 and it is a mad jazz dancer with layer upon layer of Afro drumming, loose percussion and expressive vocal ad-libs. Zukie's primary career was through the late 70s and early 80s, with his name on a huge swathe of singles, dubplates and specials through the years after he arrived in the UK in 1973. 'Natty Princess Dub' is a standout cut from that era, stripped down to a skeletal core of drums and bass for a proper dubwise ride, and 'Rock You Rock' and 'Dub Hypocrites' on the flip are just as serious for any selector.

'Hot Booty' then picks up the pace with party ready rework of some classic samples over a jittery and heavily percussive groove. Review: Daniel Avery's heartfelt tribute to the late, great Andrew Weatherall, the melancholic masterpiece that is 'Lone Swordsmen', was one of the standout tracks on his most recent album, the critically acclaimed Ultra Truth. Here the track returns in remixed form, with Throbbing Gristle's Chris Carter putting his spin on Avery's bittersweet, late-90s style IDM gem. Carter's version is a touch warmer and more percussively up-beat, with Avery's lilting lead lines, poignant melodies and glistening electronic motifs rising above a slipped breakbeat and moody bass. It's an excellent remix all told, and a fine example of how to rework on already excellent track to enhance its key features.

Up on the A-side is 'Void 93,' a terse mix of busted breaks, heavy bass hits and jungle energy that's run through with dark vocal snippets. Review: Randy's Vintage Dub Selection originally came up as a collection of dub versions of classic reggae cuts from the legendary Randy's Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica. The likes of King Tubby, Errol Thompson, Lee Perry, you name it, all recorded there, making it a veritable treasure-trove of dub history. Now comes a new 7" paying tribute to the Studio via the Randy's-adjacent Gary Hall-run label - Jamaican Recordings. The A-side here is a rare dub cut to 'Natty Dread Ah No Mickey Mouse', which was itself a cut to 'Natty Dread Won't Get A Witness', over the classic Bangarang rhythm. Meanwhile, the B spans two versions: 'Dub Feeling', recorded in 1969 and a dub of Slim Smith's 'This Feeling', and 'It's A Dubbing Lie', which reworks Ernest Wilson's 'It's No Lie', also from the very same year.

Composed of 5 new cuts originally written/recorded during the album process, the band opted to split the 16 full songs into separate volumes, in order to give listeners an opportunity to fully digest the overarching themes of alienation and everlasting political corruption that have become ceaselessly commonplace. Anthemic, ferocious, emotive and cathartic in equal measure, this follow-up continues the momentous energy of its predecessor while putting a definitive full stop on the 'Nowhere Generation' era. Lead single, 'Last Man Standing', is also one of the most vital contributions to their own expansive canon the group have dropped in well over a decade.

Review: Austrian label forTunea hits its quarter century with a tasteful 10" that comes hand numbered and is limited to just 300 copies, which are sure to fly as the grooves here are super sweet. Peletronic serves them up, starting with the busy and direct 'Sanguine' which is as bold optimistic as the title suggests. It has warm and rushing chords overlaid with vocal whoops to bring the emotion. 'Reflections' then has a more inward vibe with melancholic minor chords over a more loopy and less direct beat. It's still a house cut to make the floor take flight.

Review: While there's no doubt the Middle East has stepped into the electronic music limelight in recent years, catalysed by good (a rebalancing of media focus within dance culture) and bad (controversy surrounding events like MDL Beast and the media's desperation to keep 'breaking new territory' in a world growing smaller by the day), Fatima Al Qadri is not part of this wave. A Senegal-born Kuwaiti, the US-based artist has been doing very good things for well over a decade (2010's 'Muslim Trance' mix is a must hear), creating everything from music exploring meeting points between Arabic traditions and contemporary synth work, to sound installations for renowned galleries. No stranger to Kode 9's Hyperdub, her third outing on the imprint since 2014 puts dark, atmospheric ambient out on the streets of Dakar after dark. Or something like that.

Review: You can trace the roots of Fu Manchu back to the disaffected wastelands of mid-1980s US suburbia. Specifically Palm Desert, California - at the time, a quite unlikely focal point of a loose 'scene' defined by interferential rock & roll, drawing lines between early grunge, psyche, punk, metal and blues, the movement gave us Masters of Reality, Sleep, and, of course, Queens of the Stone Age. Stoner-leaning Fu Manchu were very much at the centre of that, and are now ready to celebrate 30 years since they emerged from the dry heat and bong water of the period, they've been putting out episodic 10" vinyls on limited pressings to mark the occasion. Musically, this is familiar territory, as hard and gnarly as it is exploratory, funky and infectious, which can only be a good thing when you're celebrating a big one.

Review: It's pretty hard not to fall in love with Macadam Mambo at first contact. The French label represents the cream of Lyon's underground, a city that has for some time now been a quiet powerhouse of electronic and dance music, developing a reputation for strange, leftfield floor-filling sounds spanning slow burn chug, experimental tropicalism, Balearic and cosmic house.

Enter Axel Larson to prove our point with real precision. L'Ete Noir is an incredible EP, packing a generous six tracks on its wax, all of which are awesome. From the knife-edge atmosphere of poised and percussive rumbler 'Hygiene Du Squelette', to the downtempo joy of a track that feels like it's built largely on the sounds of dripping water and reversed rave keys ('Le Pyromane Du Chateau Rouge'), there are so many layers here you'll be busy for days.

Review: Vladislav Delay can manipulate sound like few others. Where he gets his ideas from is anyone's guess but we're presented with a laid more of them here in the first of five EPs in a series. This one finds the man born Sasu Ripatti deconstructing his soundscapes into whirring machines, metallic textures and chopped dup dubs. It is sound art as much as club music but will still work on the more adventurous dance floors out there. 'Three-Room Problem' in particular is an eerie and unsettling piece but one that leaves you wanting more.

Review: The latest drop in the Mysticisms Dubplate series welcomes back Persian for another round of reggae-inspired electronics. Once again the artist draws from across a spectrum of bass, digidub and breaks and also throws some jungle into the melting pot. Opener 'Survival Dub' is powered by classic breakbeats and great mic work that is sure to liven up any party. 'Smoke Mari' then slows it down to a fat dub with a vocal sample from a well-known smoker's anthem with plenty of mind-melting effects and stepping rhythms. On the flipside is 'There Is No Love' with a prime junglist drop and last of all comes 'Zatoichi's Troubles' which has devastating bass.

Review: Emotional Rescue closes out another brilliant year with one final hot drop. This sorting 7" Safari by King Sporty was the artist's first ever single back in 1976. It comes after the label has served up plenty of reissues of the man known as Noel Wiliam's tackle but this one might be the best. It's from his album Deep Reggae Roots and is nice tropical excursion with steamy hits, wooden percussive sounds and funky bass over a low-slung groove and chanting vocals. This one is backed with a special disco mix by Lexx that reworks the tune for more lively moments.

Review: The always truly Indica Dub crew have got another standout 10" for you here. It's a collection of artists serving up the originals while the label's own in-house production outfit offer up their own dubs. Joseph Lalibela's 'Jah Kingdom Come' kicks off with chest-beating chords over clean digi-dub synthesis with big horns and vocals up top. The dub is more heavy and has a drilling bassline then Vanya O's 'Open The Gates' offers some majestic and hypnotic organ leads in textbook dancehall style. Tons of echo and reverb make the bottom end go on forever.

Then came some very cheeky unauthorised versions in 2020 which most definitely weren't on Encrypted (the release was even called NOT-ENV to prove this!) Now he returns with ENV 018.1, another stately slab of wax comprising three smouldering 140 jams... The purring 'Dialtone', the militant march and thundering bumps of 'Flick' and finally the woozy swagger and eerie tension of 'Untitled'. Each one as heavy as the last, rumour has it he'll be back with an album. We can't wait.

It's that one which has been remastered here under special licence from Sir Lloyd and Sister Candy. It's got the flabbiest of bass ends you can imagine with great ragga vocals up top. The version is a real head twisting, filter heavy workout and the a DJ Sports remix brings a mad jungle breakbeat to blow your speakers apart and end the EP in style.

Greg Lake's 'I Believe In Father Christmas' is a bittersweet look at the festive tradition - like so many surprise seasonal hits it's got an underlying heavy-heartedness which somehow strikes a chord with the masses. Review: Depending on your cultural references you will know that Things Fall Apart is either the title of an album by hip-hop greats The Roots, the debut 1958 novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe or Jon Ronson's latest Radio 4 series on the culture wars. Here it is a deeply mystic techno 10" by Deadbeat. Back in July, he worked with Sa Pa on their first collaborative album on the anniversary of BLKRTZ's 50th release and what a stunner it was. Here he casts free and deep into an oceanic abyss with drum-less floating currents and drifting melodies on 'Things Fall Apart' then a more hunched and dynamic dub groove on 'Adieu Chez Cherie.'

Where Do We Go From Here? (4:06)
Review: The 60s Liverpudlian rock quartet are famed for their song '6 Day War', which has been sampled from the likes of DJ Shadow in Tokyo Drift and Pusha T on his album released earlier this year. This track is undoubtedly a classic, written in the aftermath of the ongoing Arab-Israeli war of 1967, '6 Day War' is one of the best anti-war tracks of all time. The slow jam-rock ballad comes from the band's album 'Oh What a Lovely War!' released in 1973 which has not been released in Britain until now, making this a landmark pressing. The record is a psychedelic soft-progressive rock LP with emphasis on heavy guitars like in 'Lay it Down' and even pulls from folk rock in 'Dirty Delilha Blues'. Colonel Bagshot were almost criminally overlooked, though their music seems to consistently stand the test of time and it's easy to hear why. The sound is quintessential Liverpool rock, even down to the naming conventions being evocative of The Beatles.

Review: The mysterious True label is up to an eighth release now and still, we know nothing about the who, why, where, and when. This one opens up with a nice playful disco-house bouncer. 'CRUE08A' is a real crowd pleaser with bendy bass and lively drums as well as plenty of characterful synths. On the flip, things get more house-y, with a grainy, dubbed out and low slung sleaze that has cute stabs, hip-swinging claps and a diva vocal sample that is a throwback to the deep house revival of a decade ago. It's the sort of tune that will always do good work in the club, though.

On the A-side of their second single, a hazed-out garage remix of Groove Chronicles' 'Stone Cold' comes to the surface, adding gargantuan reverb to the original vocals and pad mix. The B-side, 'Give You Love', offers a belling-trilling rework of a lesser-known classic. A brilliant new bit from Robin Wylie.
