Delta Acoustic Sessions: Live From Electric Lady 26/07/18 (Record Store Day RSD 2019)

Guiding Light (4:03)
Wild Heart (5:04)
If I Say (4:35)
Review: This Record Store Day 2019 exclusive finds Mumford and Sons at work in the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York. It was there that they decided to serve up four carefully reimagined versions of tracks from their acclaimed Delta album. Each one shows a different, incredibly tender side. 'Woman' is first with its gentle piano keys and closely mic-ed vocals soothing the soul, while 'Guiding Light' has more upbeat but still lo-fi guitar riffs and 'Wild Heart' is another showcase of the beautifully raw and emotive vocals of lead singer Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford. 'If I Say' is a rousing, heart swelling closer.

Review: Fu Manchu deliver the second of three new 10"s celebrating 30 years of the band's formation. Throwing back to their incarnation as a psychic covers band and dingy garage rock outfit in equal measure, each new wax in the series will feature two new vinyl bits followed by an exclusive cover version. This one also perfectly emulates the taste and feel of their classic original single Surf Punk.

Let's Change The World (4:15)
Just That Way (3:30)
Coming Undone (3:20)
Rock Around The Clock (2:15)
Review: With the lead track a jangly, brass-infused, upbeat celebration of hope and the increasingly-unbelievable idea that we can stop impending doom in its tracks and safeguard the planet, its flora, fauna, and people, complete with pro-diversity music video, you could be forgiven for thinking former-Beatles drummer Ringo Starr had woken up and forgotten what year it was.

In reality, although somewhat out of place amid 2021's pandemics, immigration rows, environmental catastrophe, and general cynicism, the track is exactly what the doctor ordered. If medical professionals prescribed music. It's positive, it's determined, and most importantly it's not self aware but instead unabashedly optimistic. With this in mind, our best advice is to jump on board - not least as there's a further three tracks on offer, all of which are equally potent.

JKriv & Dicky Trisco - "Mae Do Mar"
Bernardo Pinheiro - "Xango"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

The 11th Barefoot beats is another hugely effective disco 12" with two well purposed cuts. JKriv & Dicky Trisco link up first for 'Mae Do Mar,' a tune that has you dreaming of warmer climes, sandy beaches and sunny skies. It's an airy cut with a tropical percussive line, hints of Latin flair and breezy vocals. Flip it over and the temperature goes up a notch - Bernardo Pinheiro's 'Xango' is a superbly soulful and heartwarming groover. The chords are draped elegantly over the busy funky bass and the vocals are chants that draw your attention and get you in a trance.

Review: Kibir La Amlak is coming on strong in June with not one but two new offerings on regular home Indicia Dubs. "Lion Step" is another fresh and forward looking four track 10" with a thoroughly futurist twist on the tried and tested dub template. The shimmering leads glisten like buildings in some high rise metropolis, while the snaking leads and stoner effects all add to the escapism. The titular track leads proceedings in slick fashion, while "Lioness Step" slows down to a more meditative pace, with swagger bass for company.

Review: The always on point iNdicia Dubs invite you to get down to their latest riddim at the hands of Kibir La Amlak. Entitled '"Ancient Pulse" this new vinyl only missive has an enacting lead line that flutters away over this label's trademark drums: they are neon, steel plated, contemporary and do a good job of making you move. A tripper dub takes care of the A1 while on the flip there are even more whacked out versions with endless echo and reverb and natty keys, while "Divine Timing" is driven by a drilling bassline that burrows superbly deep.

Review: London sound system crew, live show and record label Kibir La Amlak, founded in 2009 by Jamie JT Thomas, has been busy of late, and the fruits of their labour are now shining through with a third EP on Indica Dubs in June alone. "Eye | Eye" is the most dreamy and detached dub of the recent run of offerings. It has almost nostalgic leads up top, shining bright on a summer's day while smooth bass shapes and wavy drum lines all sinking you into something of a reverie. Various iterations come from the other three dubs, meaning there is something for every mood and setting.

The Way U Move
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped with creasing to corners of outer sleeve, but otherwise in perfect working order***

French edit maestro Chevals has been busy with releases on Whiskey Disco, Kolour LTD, Tropical Disco and Editorial over the past year. That should tell you all you need to know about how seriously rated this guy is in the scene, and it's no different as he lands on Masterworks with this tasteful 10" gem. "It's Just A Feelin" is an infectiously upbeat heater that brings out the best elements of disco and house in perfect synergy. "The Way U Move" is a dreamier affair with more overt funk stylings and a subtly cosmic tint to the keys - one to get starry eyed and sway to.

Review: Fresh from delving into his ambient side on the pastorally-enhanced "Loom Dream" album for Whities, Leif revives his self-manned Tio Series with another double-shot of delicate but impactful cuts outside the conventional slipstream of modern techno. The rhythms fall crooked, the synths trickle, bubble and cascade around the groove and the atmosphere remains humid and heady, especially on ear-snagging B-side "Rumex". "Montpelier" sports more explicit dubby flourishes and a spread of sonic flora and fauna in the middle distance that truly brings the track to life.

Review: Church's latest release - a rather tasty, two-track ten-inch single - comes courtesy of South London sorts DJ Malcolm and Dabriel Garius. A-side "Lulo", a jazzy deep house cut smothered in expansive piano solos, dreamy synth chords and sampled female vocals, is particularly potent, with the duo expertly layering up the percussion to give the track a sun-kissed, carnival-friendly feel. Flipside "Guava" displays a similar jazz influence, with the duo trading electric piano and trumpet solos over elastic synth bass and swinging, semi-broken deep house grooves. It's what we imagine a contemporary collaboration between Phil Asher and 2000Black boys Dego and Kaidi Tatham would sound like, which is high praise indeed.

Salik - "Inna Brixton" (5:51)
DJ Sotofett - "Acid Site Mix" (6:27)
Review: DJ Sotofett's Wania imprint closes a wild and entertaining 2017 off with a pair of masterful EPs, both of them showcasing the Norwegian's genre-crossing tastes and outlook. First up is this steely 10", spear-headed by newcomer Salik, out of London Town. Up until now, the imprint has predominantly focussed on the US styles of dance music, a rough and ever-quirky blend of house and techno, but Salik's "Inna Brixton" verges on much more UK-centric territories with its near six minute spew of moody energy, clicking and bouncing steadily to the sound of deep, treacherous sub bass. The flipside features DJ SO-PHAT himself, coming through with a beatless away of acid-tinged melodies that blend into a tight little rhythm, before dissipating into a loose pool of drones and bass - Sotofett at his most outlandish. An essential buy.

Review: Lie Of The Land debuts on Porn Wax with an appropriately subterranean take on the acid house formula, amping up the delay feedback and weaving accomplished waves of melody in between the floor-minded components of the music. "Chapparal" is especially deep diving, tapping into a late night mood for backroom beauties and beasts to sway rhythmically to. "Navigator" has sharper edges, but is no less hypnotic and subliminal in its approach. The Porn Wax stamp is a trusted destination for left of centre tackle for stranger dancefloors, and Lie Of The Land understands their unique vibe innately.

Review: Porn Wax makes a welcome return with more of that devilish deviant acid behaviour, splattered on a trademark hot pink 10" to let everyone know they mean business. Dawn Again takes the reins on the A-side with a fearsome beast known as "Acid Soup". It's an appropriate name, all sloppy drum lines and excessive FX to push the crowd to higher levels of psychedelic rave abandon. Rothmans' "Daffodil" on the flip is a more melodic affair, but no less intense in its straining arpeggios and dramatic synth breakdowns. With very different end results, both sides of this 12" champion the grubby, outboard approach to production as a means of attracting the freaks to the dancefloor.

Vincent Inc & Danijel Kevic - "Space"
Lola Allen - "Afrofusion Jazz"
Review: Minuendo calls upon Vincent Inc and Danijel Kevic to kick off their latest single, and they do so in fine style with the luxurious sweeping chords of "Space". Twinkling pianos, speech samples and a carefully measured set of deep house drums make this the consummate slice of pool-side dance music for those who can still find some sun at this time of year. Lola Allen steps up to the B side with something a little more sassy in the shape of "Afrofusion Jazz". As the title might suggest, there's a mixture of influences tumbling into this track, most notably with some wildly filtered jazz organ and funk licks stewing in the pot, and just when you think it's going to break it swerves off into submerged Moodymann territory. This is unpredictable house music at its finest.

Review: Italian artist Paul Santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on SoundCloud, but now with his Venetian Causeway label he's able to prove the clout to be found in his music. On this 10" the arch title "Generic House Traxx" actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within - Santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. "Please Him" on the B side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

Review: It's been a while since we heard something fresh from Ike Release. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

Fiesta slaps with a well-known sample before hopping onto the gulliest skank of his life. The groove says party, but the bass says murderation. Review: Deep grime instrumentals; few labels are doing it like Oil Gang. The clue's in the title - the tight-knit London crew are dealing strictly in sinister, seeping, dark, slick sounds. This one's even darker than usual as Spooky drops the aggro and goes straight in with the deep dagger dynamics. All stealth-like and creepy, "Low Rider" isn't a track you want on your headphones walking home through the wrong postcode at night. Boylan ups the energy with a stampier twist the rhythm and a dramatic riff croaking from the humanized bass tones. Badness.

Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

lavishes layer upon rich layer of sound, evoking the cool grooves of Peaking Lights and Chromatics, while a shimmering vocal
sample from Rebecca Sawyer adds an otherworldly sense of longing that echoes through the soul of the release. Silhouetted appears
more conventional and dance-floor friendly next to Shards, but under the surface is something unique and strangely exotic. A
mantra-like melody loop gives a nod to minimalist composer Terry Riley and his solo organ works, while world instruments such as
an African kalimba and Tibetan singing bowl only heighten the hypnotic and intoxicating quality even further.

Within the context of the mix the B Side precedes the A Side, but given how special an Erol Alkan original is, it's no surprise "Sub Conscious" is presented as the main draw here. Undoubtedly inspired by originators such as Hardfloor and Phuture, the acid soaked "Sub Conscious" still has a certain cosmic edge to it, whilst Phreak's "Acid On" sounds just as vital now despite the fact Schmidt originally recorded it some 23 years ago!

Review: Publicist is longtime producer/performer/musician Sebastian Thomson. His tracks approach house music from a darker angle, adding processed vocals and noise to a raw foundation that also takes cues from New Beat, acid house, and Detroit techno.
When performing live Publicist sequences the synths and not the drums, preferring to play an electronically treated drum kit in the middle of the dance floor. This adds an element of sweat, excitement and virtuosity not found in most electronic producer's live performances.
Sebastian Thomson is also known as a founding member of post rock pioneers Trans Am and as the drummer of heavy metal innovators Baroness.
Living in Brooklyn by way of Buenos Aires, Washington DC and London, Publicist has spent the last four years touring Europe extensively.

Fred P - "Ram" (6:23)
Kai Alce - "Scene 1" (6:13)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Finale Sessions presents a new series of releases from the vault on 10" format. This first release pairs two bonafide legends in the shape of Fred P and Kai Alce, both known for their incredibly accomplished takes on house. Fred P's "Ram" is a deep excursion into pulsing chords and delicate atmosphere, while Kai Alce's "Scene 1" is a raw, acidic affair for peak time sets - both are essential cuts.

Review: Whoever is behind the AC EXP project has clearly worked very hard to ensure their identity remains under wraps, with zilch info out there on the big old internet. Which is a shame because there's a degree of class to the two untitled productions on this 10" that demands some recognition. Both are unassuming club tools that any deep house selector will appreciate a few hours into their set, all swirling, dubby atmospherics, tunnelling rhythms and snapping percussion.

Review: With their debut album Book of Hours still fresh in our minds, Apollo duo Cloud Boat return with the new single "Carmine", which shows hints of the direction their next album will take. Featured on this 10" in both vocal and instrumental versions, the lush post-rock instrumentation is joined by colourful synth arrangements which show the duo clearly have big ambitions for their next LP.

Melba's Call (Deleted instrumental)
Review: Night Slugs offer up a prelude of sorts to Your Charizmatic Self, the first full release from label founder Bok Bok in a hot damn minute with the deleted mix of his Kelela hookup "Melba's Call". As the name suggests, it's considerably rougher around the edges than the original version, with an audible hiss that suggests the hardware has been recorded straight to tape. It offers a gravelly take on the Night Slugs sound, where rumbling bassline creates an undercurrent of John Carpenter horror, and its twitchy pattern and pristine Kelela vocal the only thing to stop you from mistaking it for a chopped and screwed version. Even in this oddly decayed form, "Melba's Call" shows just how far ahead of the pack Night Slugs are, and continue to be. Don't sleep!

Magic Words
Review: Spanish sound sorcerer Santana steps over to Porn Wax for a highly limited marble vinyl 10". "Disco Panorama" stomps with a beautifully sedate groove as clouds of synths cast a subtle spell over the beats. "Magic Words", meanwhile, is a more stripped back affair where the emphasis is focused squarely on the big lolloping bassline and a series of emotional chords ebb and flow over the top. Genuinely stunning. And with a guarantee of no digital and no represses, this really can't be missed!

When The Funk Rains Down (Lowrider version)
Review: Known for their work in Los Charly's Orchestra, North London pairing Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel introduce their new project The Boogie Man and ask what are you going to do when the funk rains down? Led by the vocal talents of frontman Andre Espeut and featuring a trombone player amusingly called Tony Trombony, The Boogie Man promise much for the contemporary funk scene of the basis of this debut release for the Imagenes Recordings label. In original form "When The Funk Rains Down" is tight and groove heavy, whilst the B Side Lowrider version is low slung and looser in execution.

Hate Internet (Claro Intelecto remix)
Review: Autoreply presents a blue vinyl repress of one of their most sought after releases: OCH's "Hate Internet". This 10" was the first in a long line of hits which goes on to include winners on platforms like Trelik, Bass Culture and PAL SL. Thunderous drums, hypnotizing chords and a sample that the old house heads will recognise makes this one for the peak time. Claro Intelecto's Warehouse Sessions on Modern Love is regarded by many as one of the most definitive collections of contemporary techno to hit the shelves in recent years. Taking his cues from the warehouse classics that accompanied him through years in Manchester's revered clubs like the Hacienda, Home and Paradise Factory, he serves up a powerful, stripped down reworking of the original track that is equally suited to sweaty dance floors. Fasten your seatbelts.

Space-Disco (1978 original)
Review: a white Mellotron M 400." So starts Klaus Hoffmann of his 40 years love affair with the Mellotron. Moving from Prog-Rock guitarist to Cosmic Disco warrior in a space of a few years, the birth of Cosmic Hoffmann would lead to a number of classic Kosmiche albums through-out the 1980s. Before this though came Space-Disco. Initially recorded in 1978 after endless late night sessions exploring the new realms of this free form electronic music, the first incarnation was recorded live to tape for a failed film project. An uplifting spaced-out synth journey, it was the later reworked version that would go on to become the lost cult classic. With added disco syncopation taking the track into interstellar spheres, it appeared only as a flipside of Cosmic Hoffmann's first and last single, "Weltraumboogie", in 1982. Unfortunately the release did not make much impression at the time but has become highly sought-after for the more leftfield DJ and music lovers in the years since. Now fully licensed and remastered, the inclusion of the unreleased 1978 Original will be only add to the collectors dream.

En Calma is a laid-back balearic shuffler with soft drums and dreamy lead guitar. drenched in Mediterranean sunshine. on the flip Trip to the Light is a slightly more uptempo percussive groove layered with folky strummed guitar. Threshing Ground (Alpha Steppa remix)
Review: Destination South Korea for this bouncy halfstep jam; J Path has composed a muscular homage to dubstep's deep side while ensuring a strong sense of funk within the bass and skank pattern. Remix-wise it's all about the UK as Steppas boss Alpha Steppa fuzzes up the blend with nuances of distortion and a far-away melodica blasts. Two fine versions, one solid 10". Let the threshing commence!

Dagger (Desto remix)
Review: SLV comprises Shanghai producer Downstate and Tokyo-based Hamacide. While the title of their debut release "Dagger" suggests sharp, cut-throat riddims, there's a much softer, richer sound amidst their slo-mo trappisms. Think Bassnectar's early material. Think Moby. Think beautiful. For something much sharper head to Desto's remix. Upping the tempo with footwork fury, it's the perfect foil to the title's dreamy dedication.
