Review: The transformation of Basic Channel into Rhythm & Sound reflects both a changed vibe and focus within their musical work. This release leaves the techno concept behind but keeps the branded Basic Channel sound. The combination with Paul St Hilaire's vocals adds a new dimension to Basic Channel's room of musical expression. A dub version is provided on the B-Side.

Malik Alston - "Butterfly" (Amp Dog Knight & Jovante remix)
Darren Abrams - "Loose Piano" (Malik Pittman remix)
Review: Following the "Detroit Beatdown", known better as Theo Parrish 'Falling Up' (Carl Craig remix), comes the next vinyl release in the first chapter of Detroit Beatdown. Released as a limited 10", this EP demonstrates the housier, jazzier side to Third Ear's Detroit Beatdown project. Even so, these are kicking tracks, typical of all dance floor orientated music that comes out of Detroit, with deep grooving bass lines and great drum programming. Side-A is Amp Fiddler, using his Amp Dog Knight moniker, and Jovante working together. Amp Fiddler needs no introduction. His distinctive voice and keys keep the vibe set by Malik Alston with his own piano flourishes. Amp's wah-wah electric piano is a dope sound, and works brilliantly on this track. Jovante is a talented newcomer on the Detroit scene. Jovante adds live drum programming, live timbales, and flute. Together, Amp and Jovante give the track a grooving, carnival feel. Malik Alston contributes additional production. Side-B is Malik Pittman from 3 Chairs giving Darren Abrams' "Loose Piano" a work over. The original track on Detroit Beatdown Volume One, was many people's favourite, and this remix displays a wonderful loose piano riff, with pumping bass and glitchy percussion. The track is perfect for building the vibe and getting those first hands in the air on the dancefloor.

Review: So, who is this mysterious Afefe Iku? After absolutely destroying the dancefloors all year long with his infamous bootleg of Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place", which he smartly put out in extremely limited amounts of vinyl around the same time his mentor, Osunlade, featured his cover of that very same song on BBE's "Exit Music: Songs With Radio Heads". In all honesty Afefe remains a mystery even to us. So, let us start by saying who Afefe isn't. Unfortunately, for those who thought he was Osunlade, you are mistaken, but don't feel ashamed, because Afefe creates at Osunlade´s studio in Santorini, which makes sense to pinpoint him as Osunlade. Afefe is a very quiet man. Like our lost brother, J Dilla, Afefe wants his music to do the talking. And this is exactly what we're going to do. "Body Drummin" is exactly what it is. A percussion heavy track strictly for the dancefloor, its organic, yet techy-tinged feel brings such an urgency to move your hips that we would only recommend this for playing after midnight. Of course, if you insist, be our guests.

Review: "The Sad Song" is the perfect introduction to the wonderful world of Fredo Viola. The choral majesty of Fredo's voice and the utterly refreshing production sound sets this EP apart as something very exciting indeed. His Kontra Musik relationship has proven to be the most fruitful, and this remix package capitalises on that with two top shelf commissions. Sketches (SBTRKT remix)
Review: Fantastic Mr Fox is back on Black Acre with three new, original tracks on his "Sketches EP," which also includes a SBTRKT remix of the title track. Coined by some as clockwork garage, the music created by the undoubtedly talented Fantastic Mr Fox is often tinged with melancholic undertones and wrapped up in computer funk cuts - his Sketches EP is no different.

The young producer is a university student in Manchester. This EP was made on his computer in his room a few months ago. Although the noises themselves would allude to this, the clever arrangement and innovative rhythms on the release certainly would not. His aim was to make music that would sound as good on the dancefloor as they would on a bus. Opening with the title track, "Sketches" grumbling bass murmurs alongside kicks and shuffling drum patterns. The Nintendo sounding noises that waft over "Sketches" also make an appearance on "BrickAbrac." Only this time, they are accompanied by a more thumping 4/4 beat and a warbling sub bass that complements the computer noises perfectly.

"If I" is certainly the most soulful of the tracks, taking on a futuristic twist on soul infused garage music. The easiest track of the four to listen to, this is likely to be as popular amongst old fans of the scene as it is with the new ones. The last track on the EP is SBTRKT's remix of "Sketches." The track is reduced to its shell and then rebuilt with Detroit style beats and a huge drop which explodes with massive drums, making this the real dancefloor killer of the pack.

Coming in two parts, Day and Night, both are dominated by the breathy narrative from Ursa Major (reminiscent of Patti Smith). A loose arrangement by the band evokes the road trip detailed in the song, while fans of Can won't be disappointed by the intense atmosphere created over the two songs.

Review: Dustin Zahn's mix of "Kinda High Auf Und Ab" leads this release on Chris Liebing's imprint and it's a real techno treat. The vocals from the original are processed and looped stunningly over the top of a moody and hypnotic beat that maintains its momentum perfectly throughout the tune. Review: Some truly original and pleasantly soulful drum and bass from Dutchman Lenzman. "More Than I Can Take" keeps to a rigid half-pace but doesn't suffer from any loss of excitement thanks to some brilliant drum sequences. The mood is kept intense with some ominous synth pads and chopped female vocals. The appropriately named "Silhouette" features on the flipside and Lenzman lets loose with the drums a little more, whilst still preserving a uniquely soulful and - dare we say - IDM flavour. Definitely a must-hear tune if you like your D&B with a progressive edge.

"Sphere of Influence" on Dublin imprint Naked Lunch makes it a trinity of success in 2010 for Ingram. The title track is a pensive electro tech workout replete with ear piercing machine funk melodies matched perfectly to the warm bassline. In contrast, "Sentiment" is pitched at a tempo that touches on dubstep, with thumping pads cascading brilliantly around the looped up and heavily dubbed vox and leftfield guitars.

Lifting Rudman's "See" from the Deeplay archives Brodin embellishes the track with a burning boogie strut, with overdubbed synth lines the melodic backdrop to filtered vocals and a chuggy beat. Vicodin
Review: Naked Lunch unleash two effortlessly cool, idiosyncratic productions from Instra:mental. "Let's Talk" is an ocean deep, slow burning crossover between house and dubstep. It utilises the warm, clicky tone of the constant kick drum that penetrates the atmospheric soundscape of background chime and tension building static. Echoed melody snatches and pulsing synthesized bass stabs create an ominous sense of foreboding that is heightened by the somewhat unsettling, down-pitched vocals. On the flip, "Vicodin" picks up the tempo as the duo indulge their dubstep palette once more. Keeping their futurist sentiments in hand, they keep the sound unique and fresh with some intricate percussion and beatless structure. Wrapped around thumping sub bass and Detroit styled piano chords, this is an atmospheric stepper that moves with a fluid arrangement for the deepest part of the night.

Review: Very limited double 10" from Berlin based producer Sven Weisemann, who pops up with his first original release of 2010. The self taught pianist, acoustic guitarist and percussionist is just as happy dabbling in jazz and soundtracks as he is piecing together deep house and techno, and across two sumptuous 10"s we are treated to the full breadth of his talents. The ethereal beauty of "Lateral Flection" offers nary a kick drum, with Weisemann instead focusing on layering intricate sonic atmospherics. "Tidal Wave", meanwhile, conjures images of a gentle ocean rather than tsunamis, and the sparse, barely-there percussion and ghostly whispers on "Placid Love" mark it as perhaps the most beautiful moment on the LP. A well worn phrase it may be, but these tracks need to heard through a nice set of speakers or headphones for the listener to fully appreciate the subtle textures and electronic nuances. Review: Round seven of All City's highly collectable ten inch series drops with perhaps the most impressive pairing to date. Dam Funk needs little introduction to anyone with a passing interest in fine music, and the Stones Throw funkateer displays all his unique talent on the two tracks that plaster the A Side. It's easy to visualise the woozy synth led snap of "Night Stroll" sound tracking a twilight sojourn through the hilly surrounds of Silverlake LA. Complementing this is the low slung sexx funk of "3012 Luv Affair", with Dam in full on organ wig-out mode. On the flip Computer Jay drops three tracks of heavy percussive heat with opener "Phantom" betraying the punk-funk intro with a spectral beatdown characterised by reverberant breaks. "Vice" showcases Jay's ease with intricate drum programming and is augmented by a fuzzed out 8 bit melody, while the oscilatting analogue drama of "Rare Type" proves to be brilliantly different.

How You Gonna Feel (Pedestrian remix)
Review: George Levings and Guy Brewer may be primarily known as a drum and bass act - and this release is issued on Goldie's Metalheadz label - but the remixes will undoubtedly endear them to other audiences. Pedestrian's version of "How You Gonna Feel" is as understated as it is atmospheric, with Spacek's dreamy vocals melting into a wall of dreamy textures and hissing, lithe breakbeats. Marcel Dettmann's remix of "Satellite Type 2" meanwhile is more upfront, with the Berghain resident laying down a relentless drum track and raw, twitchy bassline. Having said that, it's not as ass-quakingly intense as say "Apron", and the eerie organ riff midway through has echoes of Robert Hood at his menacing best.

Review: Even if you weren't privy to the news that Firecracker had launched an offshoot, your immediate thought when grasping this inaugural release on Unthank would be that it had something to do with the Edinburgh imprint. Arriving in bespoke purple hand stamped sleeve art pressed on 10 inches of clear vinyl and wrapped in Japanese style plastic, it's one of this year's most attractive propositions for vinyl obsessives. This is all without even approaching the music, a debut peek into the musical mind of newcomer Bakey USTL, an Amsterdam dwelling Estonian producer. In "A Tender Place" Bakey has delivered one of the most disjointed, flagrantly risque, thumping eight minutes of house music your senses might be exposed to this year. In contrast to the sleaze on the A Side, the opposing proceedings open with the shuffling future soul abstractions of "Nose Candy" minimalist beatdown at it's finest, whilst "Heroin" marks a swift descent into the depths of South American narcotic noise. Thus the schizoid brilliance of the A Side is matched by the slightly menacing strangeness of the opposing side on a record which is limited in numbers and high on demand.

And he has quite the melancholic croon too, with "Limit To Your Love" a wonderfully sparse track, with Blake displaying the confidence to allow his vocals to play off against some twinkling piano. A deep, subterranean bass murmur then arrives - and promptly disappears, before returning again sporadically - giving this track an idiosyncratic feel despite the impressive diversity that Blake has already accrued in his fledgling discography.

Singular (feat Mathias Aguayo - extended version)
Review: Amidst the swathe of lists that inevitably clutter up the internet each and every year, a category rising in the popularity stakes seems to be 'worst artwork', which is fair enough as there's plenty of fuel for the fire. As admirers of the arts though, we'd rather concentrate on beauty than horror, and Gallic label D-I-R-T-Y make a fashionably late play for the affections of vinyl fetishists across the world with this Extended EP from Discodeine. Arriving in a ten inch sleeve which is covered in some decidedly spectral artwork - a illustrative rendition of The Divine Comedy by Gustav Dore for the less culturally enlightened - the vinyl itself is adorned in the most attractively electric of blue colours. The music proves to be just as aesthetically pleasing with two extended versions of the duo's collaborations with two feted musicians adorning both sides. The A Side sees "Synchronised" the gloriously orchestral collaboration with Jarvis Cocker stretched to fit making this release the more bespoke attractive alternative to the rather plain house bag DJ edition released by DFA last month. This is complemented by an extended version of "Singular" which features the hushed tones of Comeme boss Matias Aguayo, exclusive to this ten inch which marks it as a highly collectable and a suitably delectable aperitif before the main course of Discodeine's debut album which gets served up in February.

Review: All City round off a superlative year of premier beat delivery with the eighth in their series of LA beatdown ten inches with Tokimonsta and Mike Gao at the helm! Naturally a staple of the LA beat scene - if you don't know Gao for his production work as part of the Galapagos4 label, then it's likely his name will flutter across your radar after his ingenious beat boxing app for the iPad sees the light of day. His contribution to this stellar series is a more than exemplary introduction to a producer with plenty of beat swagger in his arsenal with "Babylon Child" particularly appealing. On the other side Brainfeeder beat gal Tokimonsta impresses just as much with a grainy hue of atmospherics running through "Alive", whilst "Last Night's Blurry Memories" remains true to the title with some decidedly dreamlike melodies engulfed in warm fuzzed out bass frequencies. The neck snapping best is left till last with the straight vocal stutter boom bap drama of "Park Walks" the finest example of Toki's ease on the MPC.

Beyond the electronic, Shepherd proves that he can also impress on a more organic tip with his Floating Points Ensemble featuring a cast of live musicians. This debut single by the Ensemble is absolutely stunning. It is with Floating Points Ensemble that Shepherd's classical composition and jazz piano training really shines through. Jazzy, spiritual and soulful, the two featured tracks were recorded and mixed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, initially for the Ninja Tune XX box set which marked the imprint's 20th anniversary. Both tracks feature the soothing, soulful vocals of Fatima which soar beautifully in and out of a sumptuous arrangement of lush instrumentation made up of a full string section, flute, trumpet, saxophone, percussion, guitar and keys. "Almost In Profile" starts off quietly with a low drone, later joined by Shepherd coaxing a quiet melody out of his Fender Rhodes alongside his string section, slowly building to the eventual layering of a whirlwind of vocals, strings and percussion. "Post Suite" borrows influences from somewhere much further east of Shepherd's London home, and he blends these elements seamlessly alongside western music elements. A full Floating Points Ensemble album to follow one day? We hope so.

Instra:mental - "Scene 3"
Mode - "Stepping Stones"
Review: Exit Records drop a second tantalising Mosaic Vol 1 ten inch sampler ahead of the main course which is set top drop at the end of the month. Instra:mental plough deep into the bowels of downtempo machine funk drum and bass experimentalism on "Scene 3", with a decidedly neon tinged synth hook swirling around the spaces between cascading industrial percussion and spurts of sci fi bass menace. On the flip, Mode works at a similar tempo on "Stepping Stones" with the barbed electronic pulses and intermittent bursts of sub bass dynamics that ride the half step stutter, offset by pads rich with ethereal detail. Big tip!

Ordinary Things
Review: Ten Thousand Yen do it right again with the future flex of rising producer XXXY housed in a delightfully bespoke designed ten inch sleeve and limited to 350 copies for the world to consume. "You Always Started" will bear obvious comparisons to early Joy Orbsion - i.e. before he went all house - but that's no bad thing as it's drenched in a soulful emotion that builds quite delightfully towards the hair raising crescendo. The guile with which XXXY teases out the vocal sample deserves a golf clap. Equally impressive is the psychedelic house thrust of "Ordinary Things", chopping up the vocal over a skipping deep bump, with a swathe of burning tripped out melodies the backdrop to purple synth flourishes and cheeky whoo samples. There's a simplicity to the production but it's overwhelmed by the thickness of sonic emotion XXXY achieves. As well as being very pretty this release comes with a code to download the tracks!

Ofi (Bullion's Rivertrance mix)
Ofi (Space Dimension Controller's Evasive Funk mix)
Review: "The two opposing ends of R&S's historical spectrum collide on this ten inch as the track that marked Model 500's return to the imprint after a fourteen year absence gets taken apart and put back together in gloriously diverse fashion by two rising talents. It's a near exercise in futility to try and separate these two remixes of Model 500's "OFI" and proclaim one the winner, as both the submissions from Bullion and Space Dimension Controller are teeming at the brink with ideas that radicalise the template of the original. Anyone who indulged in the recent non album from Bullion will be fully aware of this producer's capacity to twist through tempos and rhythms at will and make it all work. That approach is more than replicated on his "Rivertrance Remix" which on first inspection sounds like three tracks in one. Galloping along via a bottomed out kraut groove, Bullion swerves through a collage of dizzying psychedelic sounds and effects in the space of four and a bit minutes which laugh generously in the face of categorisation. The flipside "Evasive Funk" remix from Celtic astronaut Space Dimension Controller retains the austere electro funk pulse of the original from Atkins, Banks and Taylor but sharpens the pace markedly, embellishing the bass with a schizophrenic menace that is matched by the sheer depth of percussive layers and synthesized touches.

Another Thing
Review: Veteran UK act Inland KnightS team up with Derby duo Da Sunlounge for a ninth volume of ever so slightly cheeky deep house refixes on the Borrowed imprint. "A Little Bit More" craftily reworks one of last year's most eponymous pop tracks from a peroxide hit machine that featured the rapping talents of a daisy age legend and mouthy newcomer. Heavily filtered and driven by low bass frequencies, it's one of those tracks that will make people do a double take. Complementing this on the B Side is a lolloping E Funk style rework of the best legs in the business's most famous track. The object of many a rework and re-edit by everyone from Theo Parrish to Danny Krivit over the years, it's to the credit of all involved that "Another Thing" brings something different to the table.

The SBTRKT collaborators exchange heartfelt lyrics that float over gently chimed melodies and fuzzy electronic touches which remains in the backdrop of a short but oh so sweet and tender song. As an extra special treat, Young Turks have pressed it up on a one sided heart shaped ten inch. Check the video too!

Angel Brain
Review: Magic Wire come through with a much needed repress of the magnificent rave thump of their debut release, "Pineapple Crush" from Lone. Some six months on from it's original release and both the A Side and it's flipside counterpart "Angel Brain" still sound just as current, and there's the added bonus of them now being housed on a particularly ripe looking Pineapple coloured ten inch. For the uninitiated "Pineapple Crush" lays down relentless heavy rave stabs on top a crashing 808 pattern underpinned by that distinctive Think break and topped off by a unique melody. Amidst the pounding 130bpm bass drums and euphoric rave stabs of B Side "Angel Brain" Lone works in a brilliantly fuzzy melody which shimmers with intent on the glorious breakdown. It also gives us another opportunity to implore you to seek out his brilliant mini LP Emerald Fantasy Tracks.

Panic Beats (Kaoz Loop)
Review: Caparacara's fine ode to Giallo horror soundtracks was originally released last summer on the Seed X Part 3 compilation, and here it migrates to another splendid and vastly underrated UK imprint, Fine Art. Hopefully, this transition will belatedly endow the track with the recognition it deserves as "Panic Beats" is every bit as exciting as anything you might find on the recent and critically acclaimed Giza EP from Gatekeeper. An expert melding of hefty industrial textures, haunting chords, ever twisting electronic arpeggios atop a punishing EBM beat, it's a track that bears repeat listening. Diskjokke steps up to remix the track, seeming to revel in the menacing origins; crafting a reimagination filled with dizzying showers of percussion, amidst which an ever changing backdrop of gristly acid stabs and soaring heavily funked organ riffs. It's this menacing and schizophrenic rhythmic thrust that ensures this record sits well beyond the realms of pedestrian nu discoism.

Review: Fresh from announcing a Digital Soundboy/Polydor partnership that should see a lot more support for rising artists within the drum and bass community, label boss Shy FX drops this heavyweight 10" featuring vocal drops from Kano and Donaeo as well as a refix Breakage. "Raver" is an overt nostalgic nod to jungle in its prime, with the riffing on Barrington Levy's "Many Changes in Life" a neat throwback touch. Equally brilliant is the drop into Soca at the end which is truly complemented by Donaeo's distinctive flow. On the remix front, Breakage win out with a slick amen heavy refix that will have the nostalgic junglists amongst you adopting the Benga brap in no time!

Be Brave (Richard H Kirk remix)
Review: Juan Mendez, a key part of the cultish techno crew Sandwell District under his Silent Servant alias, continues his voracious appetite for musical surprise with the second Tropic Of Cancer release in collaboration with Camella Lobo. Again released via the Downwards imprint, "Be Brave" stands alongside early Factory Floor releases in ploughing a droney, minimalist, synth wave sound. It would be easy to draw comparisons with the likes of Joy Division, but "Be Brave" retains its own contemporary identity, not least the dead eyed sonic menace that drapes over your senses as the track progresses. Strengthening the bridge between the past and present, Downwards have scored a real coup in securing a remix of the track from Cabaret Voltaire's Richard H Kirk, who lifts the track out of the mist of sonic depravity somewhat and twists it into a relentless, ever building industrial groove. Luxuriously presented on a clear ten inch and housed in a sumptuous sleeve, this is an eminently collectable record that rightfully won't last very long on the shelves.

More commonly known for the photographic direction of the Madvillain albums amongst other things, Coleman proves his production chops on his first solo endeavour. "Write Thing", the final collaborative track with Eglo's Fatima is pick here, with her buttery vocals riding the hazy orchestral stutter with aplomb. On the flip Ta'raach opts for the mixtape approach, adopting a Bullion style continual saunter through sampledelic heat.

Review: Second vinyl only sampler for the forthcoming digital only compilation that celebrates five years of Lazy Days with some classy remixers like Crazy P, Art of Tones and Ian Pooley taking on the label's best-loved tracks. This classy two-track ten kicks off with a Greg Wilson remix of "U Give Me" from Lovebirds which douses the crispness of the original in a sheen of resplendent pads, expertly dubbing out the vocal refrain and generally sexing proceedings up some. On the flip Crazy P tackle boss man Fred Everything's collab with 20 For 7 and Vanessa Baker, dropping a tightly wound burner filled with jagged arpeggios and bumping rhythms that ascends excellently into full on disco mode midway through.

Review: In advance of his forthcoming album for Nation, multi-genre specialist James T Cotton teams up with label boss Traxx under their infrequent Saturn V collaborative project on this jet black ten that's backed with a Traxx & D'Marc Cantu collab. "The Fresh Heir" is filled with waves of live synth patterns expertly weaved over a relentless techno rhythm and it's the inherent musicality shown throughout that makes it something special. "Modern", the B Side trip from Traxx and DMC, is a bleep heavy warehouse jacker filled with thrilling John Carpenter synth washes and underpinned by ever so slightly unnerving acid vocals.

Ethereal Sounds boss Anton Zap handpicks as the next contributer to the background series - which has previously housed our favourite ES release from Uncle Deep. Handed such a task, Rau excels, crafting two deep jackers that come wrapped in a multiplicity of warm sounds - "Onion Smell" contains the best sounding kick drum we've heard since Uncle Pepe dropped "Deep Burnt" way back! The Journey (Scott Grooves & Kataconda Panther remix)
The Journey (Scott Grooves beats)
Review: Norm Talley's "The Journey" is somewhat of a modern day Detroit classic. A secret weapon of many, it's been a staple within record bags since its first release in May 2009. Scott Grooves is one of those, and in true Grooves style, he's done an edit of it. The difference with "The Journey" though, is that this the first of his countless edits he's actually released to the record buying public. "Panther Remix" is an endearingly low slung, subtle take on Norm's original made by Grooves and Kataconda. Rolling percussion and progressing chords envelope from the offset, and get increasingly endearing as the track chugs along. "Panther" is irresistibly mellow whilst retaining its Detroit house appeal. Flipping over, the Scott Grooves Beats version focuses on the hollow beat of the percussion, honing in on a breathtakingly simple loop.
