Joe Claussell Presents The Ascension Of Light & Wisdom
Cat: SORA 00. Rel: 09 Dec 22

Deep House
Subtle Light (take 2) (8:41)
Peekaboo We See You (bonus beats) (12:08)
Review: Those with good memories may remember Sacred Rhythm's late '90s and early 2000s sister label Natural Resource, which existed primarily as an outlet for founder Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "deeper, electronic soundscape" style productions. SORA, which debuts with this coloured vinyl 10", is its' replacement. Clausell is naturally in top form across both productions. A-side 'Subtle Light' is undeniably"gorgeous, with Clausell wrapping twinkling, sunset-friendly piano solos, shimmering synth strings and spacey electronics around a tactile, undulating dream house bassline and hybrid drum machine/hand percussion beats. On B-aside 'Peakaboo We See You', the long-serving NYC producer opts for a darker, more heads-down 'deep-tech' sound, adding raw, rough and menacing stabs, tribal style percussion hits and bold aural textures to a weighty, peak-time-ready house beat.

How Are We Doing?
A Second Earth
Review: ** REPRESS ** The ever excellent D'Marc Cantu serves up this two track re-entry on MOS DEEP which serves as an enticing prelude to the producer's eagerly awaited debut album (of sorts) which is due later this year. Across both sides of the hand stamped ten inch Cantu demonstrates the ease with which he can work vintage, driving Chicago house rhythms and more emotive, utopian visions of machine made sounds. Lead track "How Are We Doing?" is the former, with wide reaching analogue thrusts gradually being joined by soaring strings over a driving jack groove. Our favourite however is the B Side "A Second Earth", a blissful saunter through laidback melodic touches and skittering rhythms that could go for infinity and not lose its charm.

Butch
Review: Ultramarine may not be one of the most familiar names on people's lips, but it's promising to see the UK house veterans return on WNCL. "Acid" bubbles into action with aqueous flecks of synth and a lean broken beat provide the crust to a molten 303 filling. Rarely has that well-worn sound come on so expressive and fluid as it oozes in amidst the laid back funk of the track. "Butch" meanwhile goes further out into the otherworldly realms that Ultramarine inhabits. The 303 is back again, in a more perfunctory role alongside all manner of sci-fi bleeps and squeaks. Highly recommended.

Giovanni's Keys (Matthew Styles remix)
Review: With his long player freshly dropped for Tsuba, Canadian producer Tazz gets under the knife with a couple of reworkings aimed squarely at the deeper end of the house dancefloor. 6th Borough Project get to grips with "Worked It", going for a slightly more pumped and modern sounding cut than a lot of their rootsy disco productions, using subtle flicks of melody to create a moody piece. Matthew Styles meanwhile goes further down into the murk with a thoroughly dubby version of "Giovanni's Keys", going heavy on the reverb and submerged keys but keeping things functional for the floor.

Tidal Wave
Placid Love
Review: Very limited double 10" from Berlin based producer Sven Weisemann, who pops up with his first original release of 2010. The self taught pianist, acoustic guitarist and percussionist is just as happy dabbling in jazz and soundtracks as he is piecing together deep house and techno, and across two sumptuous 10"s we are treated to the full breadth of his talents. The ethereal beauty of "Lateral Flection" offers nary a kick drum, with Weisemann instead focusing on layering intricate sonic atmospherics. "Tidal Wave", meanwhile, conjures images of a gentle ocean rather than tsunamis, and the sparse, barely-there percussion and ghostly whispers on "Placid Love" mark it as perhaps the most beautiful moment on the LP. A well worn phrase it may be, but these tracks need to heard through a nice set of speakers or headphones for the listener to fully appreciate the subtle textures and electronic nuances. Simply stunning.

Hate Internet (Claro Intelecto remix)
Review: Autoreply Music marks the coming of the summer season with a very tidy little 10" from OCH. This man recently recorded for Baby Ford's PAL SL imprint, gaining support from a diverse range of DJing luminaries including ZIP, Sammy Dee and Efdemin. Now the mysterious producer steps up with a big room floor rocker that has been described as Ian Pooley's "Chord Memory" meets Christian Vogel. Thunderous drums, hypnotizing chords and a cheeky sample that the old house heads will be sure to recognise make this one for the peak time. Claro Intelecto's Warehouse Sessions on Modern Love is regarded by many as one of the most definitive collections of contemporary techno to hit the shelves in recent years. Fresh back from remixing Depeche Mode he takes time out of his busy schedule for remix duties. Taking his cues from the warehouse classics that accompanied him through years in Manchester's revered clubs like the Hacienda, Home and Paradise Factory, he serves up a powerful, stripped down reworking of the original track that is equally suited to sweaty dance floors. Fasten your seatbelts.

Let's Talk
Vicodin
Review: Naked Lunch unleash two effortlessly cool, idiosyncratic productions from Instra:mental. "Let's Talk" is an ocean deep, slow burning crossover between house and dubstep. It utilises the warm, clicky tone of the constant kick drum that penetrates the atmospheric soundscape of background chime and tension building static. Echoed melody snatches and pulsing synthesized bass stabs create an ominous sense of foreboding that is heightened by the somewhat unsettling, down-pitched vocals. On the flip, "Vicodin" picks up the tempo as the duo indulge their dubstep palette once more. Keeping their futurist sentiments in hand, they keep the sound unique and fresh with some intricate percussion and beatless structure. Wrapped around thumping sub bass and Detroit styled piano chords, this is an atmospheric stepper that moves with a fluid arrangement for the deepest part of the night.

Review: Yossi Amoyal's Sushitech imprint never fails to impress, whether he's unearthing the new breed or it's just techno and house innovators he's paying due respect to just like underrated legends such as Steve O'Sullivan aka Bluetrain; who the label has released several volumes of work both new and old. This time it's for O'Sullivan's lesser known Bluetrain imprint. Long regarded secret weapons to 'those that know'. Foundation Dub: Chapter One features fresh cuts from the O'Sullivab studio and they've even been given actual track titles this time around, hooray! We particularly enjoyed the smoked out and glacial groove of "Friday Night Dub", the sublime bass driven dancefloor groove of "Head On" (which will work on any occasion we guarantee) or the proper and purist dub therapy of "Special Request" which keeps it as real as anything Basic Channel have done also.

Review: Tony Allen's most recent long player, Film Of Life, is revisited here with both Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer, and rising house producer Fort Romeau tasked with remixing the Nigerian drummer's work. Vilod, as they are preferring to be called these days, sit up top with a typically long form take on "African Man" which reconstitutes the blaring horn funk of Allen's original piece into a subtle 12 minute reduction of electronic house music. On the flip Ghostly artist Fort Romeau reimagines the Damon Albarn featuring "Go Back" as whispy, deep house with some charming analogue synth flourishes.

Review: The recently released Cascade doublepack saw tracks from Delano Smith's two albums for Sushitech remixed by a variety of friends, associates and admirers. This clear vinyl 10", limited to 500 copies, features two additional remixes that didn't make the cut. The first is from Smith himself, who turns in a brilliantly hypnotic interpretation that sounds like a cross between classic Detroit deep house and German dub techno. Ryan Elliot handles the flip, laying down a mix that bubbles and spits attractively. It's still sparse, hazy and locked-in, but benefits from some intricate percussion programming, spooky chords and a superb bassline.

Review: Mirko Hunger & Klaus Rakete make up Freund der Familie and the duo have called upon a collection of consonants and vowels in RNDM, XDB and Aera to remix "Porentief", the title track from their last EP. The 10" remix package sees RNDM take up the A-side with a live and raw sounding rework, yet it's similarly poised and crafted. Aera's Skindeep dub sees and emotionally charged synth line wriggle like a worm throughout its arrangement, meeting keys that rise and fall with wavering fragments of pitch that shimmer and fray. Greek deep house producer XDB's statically charged reshape moves with penetrating force, aided by skittering percussion that scratches at a stark ambience of chord echoes and tense atmospheres.

Review: Leading up to James Holden's long awaited second album, Border Community offer the Holden obsessive with a remix 10" featuring new scores of "Renata" by Daphni and Steve Moore. Daphni's remix is executed in typically unpredictable fashion by the Caribou frontman Dan Snaith, as the melancholic and euphoric fervour of Holden's consuming original is calmed by a breathy vocal choral and scissor-cut salvos lifted from an early UK Garage style. Steve Moore's alternate version offers a tom drum melodic and dreamy ambient wash of hyper-coloured synths that whiz and whirl to the point of ecstasy just before climax. A essential for Holden completists.

Review: Combine Jean-Guillaume Cabanne with Guillaume Berroyer and you get Copacabannark, a French minimal production duo with two early noughties releases on Perlon and another 2006 release on Minibar. The 10" Mindisc EP is their second release for the aforementioned Minibar and it sees Copacabannark return to a quirky and minimal squirt-effect aesthetic. "Cave" softly throbs to the sound of a tonal bassline muffled by woofy filters, as a three dimensional scope of trippy sound bites circulate the background like a confusing dream. On the flip is the stripped back and funky groove of "Grenier", narrated by discombobulated vocal samples of the late Gil Scott-Heron.

Review: Iceland's Thule imprint is back in action with a string of welcome reissues that shed new light on an impressive back catalogue of dub-infused techno from the late '90s. Sanasol were one of the main operators on said label, and so their a.m.e.p release gets a remastering treatment here and it's not a moment too soon. "Glow" rips into action on a surging tempo even as the cyclical percussive and melodic hits fall with a light tough, making for the perfect kind of uplifting dub techno without all the leaden sub bass and overbearing feedback. "Five AM" is a highly advanced track for its age, moving with the subtlety and dexterity of Livity Sound material albeit some fifteen years ahead of the curve. "Matrix Noise" too finds an interesting, unconventional groove to latch on to, yearning to merge into the hybrid techno-bass contortions of the present day.

Review: When the hitters are as big as Maceo Plex and Kompakt, there's no need for trite B side distractions and so this single-sided release comes forth with exactly the kind of anthemic, pop-straddling tech house that you would expect from such a combination. There may be edgy arpeggios and chunky drums powering the rhythm of the track, but with the straining emotional vocal and romantic pad sweeps, this is a track to garner appeal across the board, and not at the expense of the impact this will have in a club. It won't take long to learn the words, so before the summer is out you can expect plenty of people to be cooing along dreamily to this bright and bold belter.

Paean (Lone remix)

Paean (Lukid remix)
Review: Given that the precocious Nathan Fake was a pioneer in the area of melodic, indie meets electronic, it's strange to hear him calling a release Paean. Despite this, it's business as usual for the UK producer, with a cascade of melodic lines and psychedelic modulations unfolding over a rattling break beat. By contrast, the Coda remix is but a short, noisy outro and Lukid's version is a noisy, bass-heavy broken beat reshape. It's the Lone version that most articulately captures the spirit of the original version. The synth sounds redefine the term 'breezy' and, over brittle break beats, veer into melodies so sweet that they could replace the sugar in your morning cup of coffee.

Review: An Aeroplane classic gets the Deetron treatment on the second limited edition 10" release from the Eskimo label. Originally released as part of Aeroplane's ambitious debut LP We Can't Fly, the Merry Clayton featuring "I Don't Feel" had never been remixed before the Swiss producer was invited to rework it as part of the exhaustive, multi disc ten year anniversary Eskimonde compilation from the seminal Belgian imprint. No doubt the track had previously remained untouched due to Clayton's powerful vocal turn which melded perfectly with Vito De Luca's rubbery Hi NRG production, but you can't fault the way that Deetron has reworked it, laying down an extended intro that burns with intensity before dropping a thumping, precision tooled beat. A previously unreleased Instrumental version adds some heat on the flip.

This is the sweet spot where Detroit house and Detroit techno intertwine, leading in with the dreamy haze and steady trucking groove of 'Constellation'. 'Baseline '87' ranks amongst his most fabled works, riding as it does around an irresistibly catchy square wave bass hook and one of those no-nonsense beats that the legendary producer did so well. Review: Next up on Sven Vath's powerhouse Cocoon imprint is a double header from two of the biggest names in minimal house. Berlin based David Koch aka DeWalta has for the last 10 years headed up the respected Meander imprint - which has served up releases by the likes of Cristi Cons, Ion ludwig and Hreno in addition to several of his own releases: including last year's brilliant collaboration with the aforementioned Cons. His contribution "Bitter Earth Dub" is a bit more harder edged than his usual work - it's actually more reminiscent of his collaborations with good pal Mike Shannon, but the entrancing bell tones, bumpy bass and delayed claps (all trademarks of his sound) remain. On the flip, British duo Alex & Digby (Flash As A Rat/Hello? Repeat) serve up the lean micro-house groove "Citadel" which is the kind of weirdo trance inducing affair you can expect to hear at a Berlin afterhours party (like at the famed Club der Visionaere) on a Sunday morning.

After taking last year off, "1A" is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. It's a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. "1B" maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.

He's at it again on this first outing on Twig. A-side "Mystic Blues" is a near perfect example of this trademark trait, with whistling melody lines, warm bass and undulating electronic motifs riding a snappy, Chicago jack style drum machine groove. He flips the script slightly on "Mystic Funk", fixing his dreamy chords and starry electronics to a drum track that sits somewhere between two-step garage and bumping U.S house. In other words, it's another rock solid outing from the fast-rising producer.

Review: Ell Weston and Sandy Hagenbach's Banoffee Pies imprint is run out of Bristol, but their heart is very much in the deep house zone, merging everything from minimal to deep house and even a little tech for good measure! One thing is for sure, however, and that is focusing on releasing the very best in dance music; in the label's own words, this is "for the listener... for the DJ... for the heads". This RSD 2017 special is a two-track bullet, kicking off with Jase's "Sail Away", a sublimely minimalistic affair that oozes a very particular sort of ethereal energy from its spectral groove, shimmering away with a slight stutter and a fine, off-kilter away. On the flip, Adam Stromstedt's "IRAATO (It Remains As A Topic Over)" is a grizzlier dance excursion, made up of a similar minimal flow except that here the sounds are bouncier and more vibrant, subtly heading into the raw-minded end of the house spectrum. Loose, stripped-back and BIG on a BAD system...

Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

Review: Some fresh material from Maayan Nidam is always welcome here at Juno HQ. It's approaching cliche but Nidam trades in quality not quantity, her two solo albums augmented by a smattering of singles across Perlon, Freak N Chic and Wolf N Lamb and the recent signing to Nina Kraviz's TRIP label. Of course Nidam has a strong relationship with Perlon, extending beyond her solo work to encompass the Mara Trax collaboration with Vera, and this latest record is a fine addition to both artist and label's discographies. Arriving in 10" format, Deep Under Sobriety Regime pairs the deep, trippy driving sounds of the title track with "Looking Through A Glassy Mind" which sounds like an abstracted take on Mr Oizo classic "Flat Beat." Review: Prolific producer Arno Volker AKA Einzelkind returns with his first outing of 2019, this time in cahoots with regular studio buddy and Point of View label founder Giuliano Lomonte. Between them, the experienced pair has conjured up a couple of exceptionally strong peak-time workouts. We're particularly enjoying A side "Civil Stretch", a bounding and melodically attractive affair where bubbly electronic motifs, alien chords and jaunty stabs rise above a rubbery, hip-swinging house groove. Flipside "This N That" continues in a similar hybrid tech-house/deep house vein, with the duo bolting woozy chords and eccentric vocal samples onto bustling drums and a thickset electronic bassline.

Review: Gary Martin is well known for his unique productions and his label Teknotika is surely a classic coming out of the famous motor city. This special 10" holds two sought after tracks that were found on a lost DAT tape by Yossi Amoyal and Gary Martin himself. On the A side we have a long time secret weapon, it's a hypnotic groove that was heard on many classic sets, Zip and Ben Klock to name a few. An extremely insane, hard to find Gigi Galaxy track that was changing hands for silly prices is on the B side, for those who know... massive release!

A City At Night (6:12)
The Dream (extended edit) (4:46)
Review: For the latest missive on their fast-rising DET313 label, Gary Martin and Yossi Amoyal have dug deep into the archives of Martin's long-running Teknotika Records imprint. First up on the A-side is a re-mastered version of "A City At Night", a Martin cut from 1990 that mixes the futurist intent of Motor City techno with chunkier, UK style techno grooves and the kind of stabs and musical flourishes more associated with Robert Hood or Terrence Parker records. Side B boasts a freshly extended edit of another Martin gem - this time under the Gigi Galaxy alias - from 1994. "The Dream" more than lives up to its title, with Martin wrapping restless bass, starry lead lines, alien electronics and sumptuous chords around a hypnotic deep techno groove.

If (original mix)
If (alt version)
Review: With an ever-increasing release schedule things are going particularly well for Lithuanian producer Linas Strockis at this point, and now he sidles up to Connaisseur with two variations on a theme that show off the playful and catchy style he is making his name on. The original mix of "If" is a light and fluttering house cut with a recognisable vocal hook and some choice emotive synth lines. Meanwhile on the flip the "alt version" opts for a more adventurous approach that works a restrained line in melodics made up of craftily interplaying tones that maintain the peak time energy always to be found in a Few Nolder jam.

Seizure (6:42)
Review: British power duo Waze & Odyssey take a break from their always reliable W&O Street Tracks for an appearance on Edible; the Bristol based imprint by Eats Everything and Nick Harris and follows up great releases by Steve Mac and Robert Bruce aka Rhythm Masters and Merseyside's Mele. On the A side, we've got the bouncy and funked up tech house of "Down With Tha" where that very vocal loop is chopped up to perfection. On the flip, we have got the deep and sexy tribal house groove of "Seizure" which will take you back to the turn of the millennium on this west coast style groove, that calls to mind the heyday of Hipp-E & Halo or Tyler Stadius.

Review: Mysterious newcomer Eric Miller is back again on Sushitech, following up this year's brilliant Flora LP: and what an explosive introduction that was! Starting out with the deep, dark and driving tech house of "Silhouette 1"; this is the kind of late groove that you could imagine Delano Smith or Jerome Sydenham pumping out to set the cruise control. On the flip we've got "Silhouettes 2" which really shows us how you do do proper dub techno in the tradition of greats like label mate Steve O'Sullivan or Detroit's Luke Hess: this one rolls at you deeply with a restrained ferocity that's perfect arsenal for any serious DJ's record bag.

Destroying Angel
Review: Making his first appearance on Marc Romboy's Systematic imprint, Dicken 'OCH' Lean throws down some ineffably weighty dub techno that does well to avoid the horizontal trappings of the genre and instead keeps the energy up with a rugged rhythmic structure out in front. The dubby textures themselves on "Work Da Groove" and "Destroying Angle" are also tweaked for greater impact, dressed like industrial ghosts just as they move like German dancers. The latter is the more militant of the two, while "Work Da Groove" makes the most of a warm lead synth line to shed some light on the situation.

Starts From Now
Review: Having scored releases on a staggering amount of top-shelf European house and techno labels, Och makes his second visit to Systematic to follow up on the Force Mass Control EP that he dropped in the not too distant past. This instalment finds the producer in fine fettle as he delves into his measured and atmospheric take on pristine house and techno. While the drums may sound a little raunchy on "Soul Burner" the haunting chord swells and poignant vocal hook add plenty of mystery to balance the track out. "Starts From Now" opts for a more concise kind of deep house, all elegiac pads and rock solid swinging groove.

Review: It's pure business with this new 10" from Stately which offers up two delightful dub techno explorations from Federsen. Taking care of the first side is 'STLR10 1A' which is coated in warm vinyl crackle and has deft little chords hanging above the super deep and supple drums. Add in wispy little synth circles and you have perfect head and body music. The second track is a more driving dub techno roller that calls to mind the best of Steve O'Sullivan. It's smooth, frictionless and perfectly warm for all your backroom needs.
