Review: Nine years is probably more than a hiatus really. By that point people are starting to wonder if you will ever try and make a come back. Wire did just that in 1999 after vanishing with plenty of impressive traces in 1990. In 2001, they set about putting out five records, Twelve Times You, Read and Burn 01, Read and Burn 02, Send, and finishing with PF456 Redux. The latter compared both Read and Burn EPs, alongside the full Send album, on vinyl. Sadly, technical limitations meant this had to be shortened versions of the tracks, hence the PF456 title, referring to both catalogue number and process.

It's not all bad news, though, because this means that almost two decades on we get PF456 Deluxe, which is basically the collection but without what the band described as "brutal edits". Longer, far more commanding and immersive as a result, it's still just as post punkish, punk-rooted, riff-y, original and utterly danceable.

Review: Haruomi Hosono was a key player int he 80s music scene, often fusing myriad sounds and styles from all over the world into his music. Another of his key album has been reissued by Light In The Attic this month, while this one comes on Sony and is a truly playful electronic pop gem. He may be one of the most revered figures in the Japanese music industry but his record with its playful melodies and shuffling beats, vocal ad libs and pirouetting grooves all prove Hosono doesnt take himself too seriously.

Review: Self-styled "melodic electronic acid braindance techno" specialist Moy is having a very successful 2021, with this fine double 10" EP for Royko following similarly sublime outings on Exalt, Emotec and Dynamics of Acid. Opener 'Polykarp' sets the tone, with gentle acid lines, starry chords and bubbly electronic melodies wrapping around rolling electro beats and attractive blasts of rolling breakbeats. 'Timeslip' is a darker and weightier breakbeat workout peppered with electronic bleeps and emotive piano lines, while 'Parrots in a Graeyard' is a mid-tempo affair laden with rumbling, UKG style bass, sustained chords, raw rave stabs and funk-fuelled breaks. Closing cut 'Deep Thunder', meanwhile, is another would-be rave roller with a pleasingly spacey finish.

Review: On his previous releases as Booker Gee, Guillaume Metenier has employed his immaculate organ-playing skills over a range of killer funk and soul grooves. Here he flips the script, delivering atmospheric, fluid Hammond solos over some dub-wise reggae grooves played and produced by Spanish multi-instrumentalist Lone Ark (real name Roberto Sanchez). Both Metenier and Sanchez are in fine form on opener 'Auxmites', a bass-heavy head-nodder that sounds like Lee 'Scratch' Perry producing Jimmy Smith. 'Faith' is a little sunnier and warmer, with Metenier's solos working in perfect unison with Sanchez's glistening guitars, jangling pianos and skanking rhythm. Both cuts come accompanied by pleasingly spaced-out Dub revisions courtesy of Sanchez. Top stuff!

Their A Bit Of What You Fancy album is now a hard to believe 30 years old and to mark the occasion it gets a limited edition reissue that has been totally re-recorded. The hard working band bring plenty of new life to the music, fresh perspective and oodles of energy. It comes on special blue vinyl and comes after a sell out tour of 35 dates around the UK in 2019 and reaffirms the band as at the top of their game.

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christian Fennesz came together to stunning effect on their collaborative album Cendre. Now, for the first time ever, Touch are releasing it on vinyl. It was initially recorded between Vienna and New York in 2004 and 2006 with each artist responding to the other's compositions. Accompanying text says that the record fuses "unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition." In short, it is a powerful ambient album with a quiet but devastating artistry. Heavy chords linger in the air, distant shakers take your mind away, foggy atmospheres are run through with gentle winds. It is beautifully melancholic.

This is the first new music from A Mountain of One in a decade and it marks the inaugural release on their new AMORE label. This tune was recorded over Skype during the pandemic and shows that the pairing of Mo Morris and Zeben Jameson and have lost nothing since we last heard from them - it is snaking atmospheric, deep dub with plenty of heady pads and cinematic designs. Welcome back!

That one went Top 10 in the USA and helped the album go double Platinum as well as taking them on tour of the States. On 28th May 1983 to celebrate the album, they played US Festival San Bernadino. Bored With The US Festival is the legendary live recording of the broadcast from that night with all the best moments from Combat Rock as well as impromptu live interactions. It proved to be the swansong for Mick Jones, who was fired from the band shortly after.

In the words of label owner Stefan Knappe, this series has a "special concept embracing the unknown and could be seen as an interface between experimental music & cultural science, psychoanalysis and philosophy". Kevin Trappeniers aka Kreng was artist in residence TAKT Dommelhof in 2014 and created the dance performance SELFED which premiered at Plesni Teater Ljubljana, Slovenia. These three recordings taken from the performance create some sombre yet seductive atmosphere, a combination of neo-classical and dark ambient with some fascinating textures, field recordings and sound design involved which definitely begs your attention.

Review: Yossi Amoyal's Sushitech imprint never fails to impress, whether he's unearthing the new breed or it's just techno and house innovators he's paying due respect to just like underrated legends such as Steve O'Sullivan aka Bluetrain; who the label has released several volumes of work both new and old. This time it's for O'Sullivan's lesser known Bluetrain imprint. Long regarded secret weapons to 'those that know'. Foundation Dub: Chapter One features fresh cuts from the O'Sullivab studio and they've even been given actual track titles this time around, hooray! We particularly enjoyed the smoked out and glacial groove of "Friday Night Dub", the sublime bass driven dancefloor groove of "Head On" (which will work on any occasion we guarantee) or the proper and purist dub therapy of "Special Request" which keeps it as real as anything Basic Channel have done also.

There is the lovely holiday song 'Spidey-Bells (A Hero's Lament)' by Chris Pine, who is also behind the festive 'Up On The House Top'. Other cast members such as Shameik Moore appear on 'Joy To The World', with Jake Johnson doing a fine turn on 'Deck The Halls' and Jorma Taccone on 'The Night Before Christmas 1967'. These are fun tunes with plenty of warming festive cheer on crystal clear vinyl 10" picture disc that is going to send collectors wild.

Review: The Advisory Circle (Cate Brooks) is a central cog in the machine that is Ghost Box, one of the most compelling labels to operate in the genre of hauntology in modern times. Brooks' too-perfect muzik is uncanny, reflecting on the grey memories of attempted architectural utopias and 80s library music for TV. These are slow instrumental electro ballads that inspire something of a failed sense of wonder in the listener, and they form a perfect addition to Brooks' extensive catalogue.

Review: There's something fascinating about hearing the sound of true icons at their embryonic stage, and that's exactly what you get with this rare radio broadcast recording of Basildon's finest, Depeche Mode. In 1981 they had just released their debut album Speak & Spell and were still largely gigging around London and their native Essex (bar a sojourn to Hamburg). Before Vince Clarke left the band at the end of the year this session was recorded, showcasing the raw but seductively powerful sound of the band when they were still but teenagers trying their hand at this emergent synth-pop thing. Compared to the polish you might expect from the majority of the band's output, it's Depeche Mode reflecting the more typical minimal wave sound of the era, which is a treat in itself.

Review: Tokyo-based post/math-rock noodlers Toe have a habit of cleansing the palette of each subsequent full-length they release with a follow up EP. Just like 2005's debut album The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety was followed up with 2006's New Sentimentality EP, the group would return three years on from their stellar 2009 sophomore effort For Long Tomorrow with 2012's The Future Is Now. From the twinkling emo-inflected shoegazing noodles of 'Run For Word' to the more acoustic-driven psych-jazz of 'Ordinary Days', the four cuts purposefully meander and fuse differing elements from the band's arsenal whilst somehow increasing the dense technicality to absurd, near impenetrable levels.

Now the Grau series continues with plenty of dubbed out electronics from the off: opener 'Margin' is a slow and heavy one, with chords rippling over the face of a lumpy kick drum, 'Scope' then has frostier synths and a dubwise vocal praising jah and pacing about the mix and 'LIMBIC' then sinks you in deep to serene synth modulations and rolling drums that cannot fail to enter you into a state of pure mindfulness. 'Utils' closes out on a more uptempo rhythm with double kicks and pulsing subs locking you in.

Mostly active during the 1990s, the trio were instrumental in bringing robotic ideas to EU techno. This reissue of 'Cybernetics' is a big curio, with four new alternate takes on classic neuromantic cuts including 'Authentic' and 'Mechanic'. For those who like to sprinkle a bit of dystopianism into their DJ sets, this EP littered with sinister vocal samples scraped from future-facing TV documentaries abut cyborgs.

Review: There's not a huge amount of background we can share on Mysterium, a startlingly beautiful and complex self-titled six-tracker on the always reliable Silver Arrow. A collection of music that lulls you with its blissful moments but still manages to maintain an air of uncertainty about it. A guitar-led dreamscape filled with achingly serene sections, yet underpinned with a real atmosphere that's neither relaxing nor intense, but is ever so-slightly unsettling at times. At least that's true of 'April Food' and 'I Am The Chaos', two tracks that open scoring here. Both seem to build a subtle darkness in comparison with closer 'Turn In', with its quietly rousing and affirming key changes. Taking elements of shoe gaze, beach pop, psychedelic rock, trip hop and more, it's an intoxicating ride through a spectacular unknown.

Review: Brussels label By the Bluest of Seas is a secret gem of the free jazz and improvisation scene that should get plenty more eyes on it in the wake of this new album from Delphine Dora and Mocke. it is their second long player after one on Okraina Records and it invites you to slip into a dreamstate as languid guitar strumming and drawn out vocals stretch to infinity. Melancholic arpeggios gently rise and fall, there is both tension and tears and a churchy architecture to this which places you at the centre gazing up in awe - no shock really given that it was recorded in an old church in the village of Mauzun in the Puy-de-Dome.

Review: T. Rex was the primary force in glam rock, thanks of course to the creative direction of guitarist and vocalist Marc Bolan T. Rex's music borrowed the underlying sexuality of early rock & roll, adding dirty, simple grooves and fat distorted guitars, as well as an overarching hippie spirituality that always came through the clearest on their wailing ballads. This double 7" marks the 50th anniversary of their legendary performance in Lincolnshire's Gliderdome where 4 brand new songs were debuted, including 'Thunderwing' of course. Including 3 acoustic renditions of classic songs, this live album represented a huge milestone for the 70s British glam-rock era - with longtime fans of the genre hearing the influences others took from the sonics that the group were pushing. Fans will know that their Number 1 hit 'Telegram Sam' was also performed that night though mysteriously no such recording exists - this version is as good as they come.

Groove City Medley (edit By Francois K) (7:19)
Review: This new 10" from New York label Sunshine Sound (which is often a label said to be recognised as the 'birthplace of the edit') features a couple of legendary edits by the one and only Francois K. They are in fact medleys that find him workings mixing desk hard as he layers in tribal chants, drum funk, sick percussion and plenty of breaks, whistles and more. He did them first back in the disco heyday and yet they still very much have the same uplifting and irresistible impact on dancers now as they did back then.

Johnny Hammond - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: A reminder of the days when liking Morrissey was a less contentious matter than it is today, 'Honey You Know Where To Find Me' is one of his more jubilant moments musically and lyrically finds the Moz in typically defiant form. The song dates back to the recording sessions for the classic Vauxhall & I album, although the original recording was shelved, only to be re-recorded a year later. You can't keep a good song down, it seems, and here it is again in glorious 10" -- and strictly limited - orm.

Review: There is no messing when it comes to the techno served up by Umwelt's essential Rave Or Die. Over the course of 14 previous EPs the label has dropped rib-rattling, brain boggling bangers aimed squarely at the floor. This time out the boss himself steps up with Ancient Methods with each providing one solo track. This one comes on limited 10" picture disc so is an extra special one to add to the collection Ancient Methods's 'Accept Light' is a harshly textured industrial banger and Umwelt's 'Shades of Security' is just as caustic and hard edged.

Since 1999 he has been carving out his own distinct brand of sci-fi beats, with his latest release coming out on his Asking For Trouble imprint. Hand Claps (5:49)
Review: Killer disco rarity alert! Never officially released, Walter Gibbons and Paul Cassella's remix of The Temptations' 'Law of the Land' was something of a secret weapon for a handful of New York disco DJs in the late 1970s. Acetates exist in very small numbers, but this is the first time the remix has been given a wider release. It's a delightful - and impressively grandiose - extension of the Motown favourites' disco classic, with Gibbons adding his own spoken word vocals: a tongue-in-cheek recital of the Old Testament's 'Ten Commandments' (or at least a version of them). It's utterly great all told and should be in every disco DJ's collection. The B-side, incidentally, is a handclap track created by Gibbons for mixing purposes - he was, after all, one of the earliest beat-matching jocks and a genuine pioneer.

Review: Rave of Die offers up sounds as confrontational as its name. This time they look to the legendary Spanish techno titan Oscar Mulero and fellow mainstay Umwelt for a pair of true blistering cuts. 'Taste The Rope' has brutal, blistering and distorted drums pummelling away while mysterious pads up top speak of an astral voyage. On the reverse, 'Creature Obscure' cuts loose on a flaming electro breakbeat, with rave synths full of terror buzzing and ripping about to blow your mind and tire your body. There is no messing with these two.

You Are Alone (13:54)
Review: Not necessarily the album title everyone needs in the winter, let alone the winter of a particularly difficult 2020, but given the overall feeling of Moljebka Pvlse's powerful two-track release the cold and unapologetic name makes perfect sense. The whole thing is dense with dark moodiness, packing intent and a sense of the unsettling into every second.

Talk about tension, opening with 'In Love & Death' there's more than a sense of subtle dread to the organ refrains and murmured, muffled vocal chants. The pressure builds over the course of the arrangement, finally subsiding to leave us on the sparse chords of 'You Are Alone', a piece that slowly develops from those initial disorienting but delicate chords into something much more sinister. An incredibly powerful trip from the Swedish master-experimenters.

There is none on the horizon yet, but there have been a couple of singles in the last year. 'Good Days', on her home label Top Dawg Entertainment comes with clean and dirty versions. Review: Resurfacing Sun Ra treasures from the 1950s have become increasingly prominent and, by now, his younger fans can truly explore this legend's never-ending catalogue in its original vinyl format. Modern Harmonic are the ones responsible here, and reissuing "The Lady With The Golden Stockings is a great move on their part because it's one Ra monster that we'd been missing from our catalogue; the percussion, the sax and the general feeling of potential deconstruction at any given point make this a truly stupendous affair. "Spontaneous Simplicity" is calmer, more psychedelic and, if we're not mistaken, there's a very early drum machine rambling on in the lower end of the mix, while "Love In Outer Space" finishes this off with Ra's own voice backed by a more traditional sway from the famous Arkestra.

On side one is 'Rock & A Hard Place' as played live in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It's a big licking affair with jangling guitars and driving drums making for an energetic cut. 'Obi Baa Wiase' and 'Sika Be Ba' are two tracks with a close-knit message of gratitude, hope and faith between them, with the former being the staple track of Crentsil's long career after being played at weddings, festivals, and live concerts by local bands. A pair of incredible tracks produced by Charles Amoah utilising limited equipment to create an authentic party atmosphere, jovial flutes and plucky strings are the accompaniment to A.B. Entsils's proclamation of joy - put this on at the party and the room are sure to start moving.

Review: Zsuzsa Cserhati was a key player in the Hungarian pop scene of the seventies. She has real talent but was maltreated by the industry so never fulfilled her potential. This new series aims to shine a light on what was never known as a soul scene in the county, but could have been given the wealth of great material produced in a small space of time in the years in question. Most of the sounds never made it out of Hungary but that all changes now. Zsuzsa's two cuts on this 10" are her best ever - 'Puha Sohajok' is sensual but tight and 'Ne Nezz A Napba' is lovely soft soul. The other two cuts are similarly essential making this a fine gateway into this little known scene.

Review: Finnish underground icon Sasu Ripatti returns under his most frequently used pseudonym, Vladislav Delay, for another bout of Dancefloor Classics. The series has already established a loyal following, and the fourth episode is enough to explain why, even if you've not encountered any of the preceding instalments. Music for imagined dancefloors is how the official release information puts it, it quickly becomes clear just how vivid that imagination is. Throwing down a string of footwork inspired cuts, the four tracks here are frantically upbeat and packed with filthy, jacking potential. But they're also deep, at times ghostly - or at least a little eerie - and ground in a desire not just to make people move, but also push sounds forward into new territories. Never an easy line to tread, the overall results hit as hard as the beats themselves.

Now he branches out to Norway's Mutual Intentions with a crisp new EP, Mid Season, on 10". It showcases the dexterity of his voice which goes from offering up classic bloom bap era par's to more stylised Prince-esque deliveries on 'Mid' and downbeat, almost mumble rap styles on 'Names.' Review: Pressure Sounds brings together the best of the world's reggae from across the ages on this new 10". It kicks off with the superb Yabby You, famous motorcycle enthusiasts who has a vast collection of dubs out now on this same label. His tune 'King Pharaohs Plague' with The Prophets is a real soul-enriching anthem with spaced out studio trickery and a fleshy dub. Tommy McCook's 'Plague Of Horn' is a deep dark wobbler and then the third and final version comes for the one and only King Tubby. His 'King Pharaoh Dub' has a deeply buried bassline lost in amongst all the endless reverb that melts the mind.

It is a Barry Brown original and the first remix is one with models of echo and reverb, plenty of knob twisting and heavily affected hi-hats and a rolling rhythm. Those names include Steve Lukather, Linda Perry, Fave Coz, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, and Bruce Sugar, among others. But, ingredients aside, what's the end result actually like?

Well, for one thing, it feels like a record made with camaraderie. The appropriately-titled 'Everyone & Everything' has a definite Fab Four vibe to its outro, requesting that all in earshot get involved in a chorus designed to get everyone and everything singing along. 'Let's Be Friends' takes that atmosphere to the after party, "Ya, ya, ya, ya" vocal hook making the whole thing sound slightly madcap. Meanwhile, closer 'Free Your Soul' invites us into smoother and sexier surrounds via sax and tropical beats.
