Review: The transformation of Basic Channel into Rhythm & Sound reflects both a changed vibe and focus within their musical work. This release leaves the techno concept behind but keeps the branded Basic Channel sound. The combination with Paul St Hilaire's vocals adds a new dimension to Basic Channel's room of musical expression. A dub version is provided on the B-Side.

Review: The continued contact to the NYC based reggae label Wackies yielded a couple of contracts to singers who have been involved in recordings since the early 80s. Bluey
Review: Hope was the very first song recorded by Fat Freddy's Drop and also the very first record to be released by Kartel. The original release came out in August 2003 on special edition 10" vinyl and sold out within a matter of weeks receiving heavy support from tastemaker DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Mr Scruff, Laurent Garnier and Jazzanova. At the end of 2003 'Hope' was voted No.1 record of the year by Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 show which quickly saw the record gain cult status and become highly sought after. This first re-pressing has been timed to coincide with the current Fat Freddy's Drop UK/European tour, and features brand new artwork from Steve Boggs, an up-and-coming New Zealand artist currently based in London. The artwork is a typographical montage of the songs lyrics.

Review: Kode 9 may have been widely lauded in the past, but those reactions are nothing next to the deep shudder of awe that greeted this jaw-dropping single with the enigmatic raw-throated Daddy Gee. Kode 9's musical virus is a constant mutation of Jamaican dub & dancehall, German micro techno, and moody UK garage & drum & bass. Accurately describing the effect of this beatless dub cover of Prince's 'Sign O' The Times' with lyrics slang scribed by Gee into yard patios is near impossible, but these gents of the press were among the first to attempt it.

This is Wackies resplendent, steeply spiritualised, with dense percussion and masterful mixing and comes backed with an irresistible deejay version from Batta and Skatee, in a Michigan & Smiley style and fashion.

Review: Limited release. The original mix of "Innerspace" is a lovely dub influenced deep houser with gorgeous deep moody pads. The remix, courtesy of Umblu, lays it on thick with traditional Jamaican riddims and bassline over a tight 4/4 groove that fans of Beat Pharmacy and Francois K's dub excursions with Tikiman are gonna flip over! Finally closing off this special 10" is "Temptation", an old school mid-tempo Mo Wax styled jam where funk meets dub.

Review: They're back! 5 years after "La Revancha Del Tango", and even more from the very first 10", Gotan Project are coming again with a new album entitled "Lunatico". Here's the first 10" out of it, offering the same & very unique recipe, yet slightly different. "Diferente" is the first single & leaves nothing wanting on the dancefloor. The number's driven by a bass loop that carries a lusty melody piped out by Cristina Vilallonga, while the strings play a dramatic supporting role. The irresistible tension builds into a crescendo with a hint of Bandoneon, a sprinkling of piano notes and other sounds lurking in a dark and murky atmosphere. "Domingo'' refers to Domingo Cura, the Argentine percussionist that Gotan Project was planning to record with, and a major source of inspiration for them. But as life would have it, he passed away a few months before the session. So instead the skilful Facundo Guevara pays homage to him with an intricacy of complex rhythms. On top of this, we hear the raspy voice of Afro-Argentine Jimi Santos pronouncing the numerous African words that pepper the world of tango: "Milonga, Candombe & Quilombo"!

A Second Thought
Review: Brighton based band Shoreline is the brainchild of guitarist Tom Cowan and Italian-born vocalist Beatrice Sanjust, and incorporates the deft musicianship of a whole host of their talented associates. This 10" is their debut release and collects five beautiful tracks of whimsical folk, akin to that of contemporaries Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan or Iron & Wine. They blend gorgeous sparse instrumentation; harps, bouzouki and of course acoustic guitar with Beatrice Sanjust's smooth and sensual vocals and playful lyrical content - the result is more than explosive. Opening track 'Lightning' sets the scene perfectly with two minutes of simple but drastically effective guitar, xylophone and that evocative voice. By the time you reach the ep's highlight 'Kings' you're already won over, the unforgettable harmonies bring to mind the finest moments of British folk music. Shoreline inject enough of their own personality and originality to make this a stunning experience. The band are even at this early stage garnering heaps of praise for their live shows in and around Brighton and Italy, and the word is only just starting to get out. With a spot already booked for this year's influential Green Man festival - 'From Eden, Home & In Between' is only the beginning for Shoreline, great things are destined to come!

Review: The second release from Analogik takes the listener to new territories of genre breaking music. A combination of electronica, waltz and dub makes this release a very enjoyable pearl. Three very different tracks bring good mood and danceable vibes, while the remix by Karsten Pflum really entertains the listener. Kringle's catchy melody sticks on the mind for a long time. Fransk Lysettewaltz must be the first steps into a new genre called nu-waltz, with an underlying western guitar and klick beat. Hov is a collaboration between Analogik and the Danish reggae act Bo Marley, the fusion becomes an Analogik dub. Analogik's first EP on Auditorydesigns' "So Many Musicians" was played by numerous of DJs, to name a few, Gaudi, Steve Harvey and DJ Seb (Chillosophy Music and Ooze.) The new tracks are a taste of their first full length album, called Søens Folk (in English it means seafarers), that will be released on Auditorydesigns this summer.

For The Love
Review: First in an infrequent series of limited 10" dubs made available to explore Andy Stott's squashed sublow variations, "Choke" has been pressed up in a limited edition of 650 copies for the world and will not be re-pressed. Having spent the last few months balancing out and refining his forthcoming debut album "Merciless", Stott has been re-wiring his studio for a heavy build-up session. "Choke" is a crushing dubstep riposte, stripped down and rebuilt with crisp double snares and impossibly weighty bass, augmented by those classic strings that come by way of Berlin rather than any South London boroughs. The flip "For The Love" is a Garage redux, percussive spasms battling it out with low-end wobbling that threaten to spin out of control, kept in check by those classic neon chord stabs. A crushing emission, buy now or cry later.

Faith
Review: Amp Fiddler brings the vibes on "Right Where You Are", the first single to be lifted from the brand new and supremely soulful album "Afro Strut" backed with some serious mixes coming from Tom Middleton and Hot Chip. Both of Tom's mixes are as expected deeper than deep, spacey and very much in his Global Communication style. One is a full soulful vocal mix on "The Way The Deep" tip while the dub gets ever so spaced out and heavily effected. Hot Chip strip the whole thing down to a mid paced eight minute voyage into future soul and the extended version completes the package.

Once Upon A Time In MPC
Dancing At Murder Place
Review: Little is known about Ove-Naxx, a mysterious and extremely talented young musician from Japan's highly-evolved electronica scene. When asked for biographical materials, he simply replies: "Dirty monkey from Osaka, Japan". Ove-Naxx is pioneering a delirious take on raggamuffin drum & bass and post-modern Nipponese pop. Catchy synth melodies buzz inside fast-moving thickets of percussion. Reggae and video-game music are an obvious influence, as are Japanese harmonic systems. The overall sound can be compared to artists such as Venetian Snares, DJ Rupture, or Squarepusher, but Ove-Naxx's superb production has a voice all its own. Since 2002 he has produced well-received releases such as an EP on DJ Ruptures Soot label and a split album with fellow breakcore prankster Jason Forrest. For Hymen records, "Massive Swing In MPC 2000" is a quite unusual release: the format (our first 10"), the artwork and also the sound itself. Straight beats are combined/compromised by sudden breaks, randomly-set little melodies, easy-listening rip offs, funk guitars, jazzy bass lines and voice samples (you will never will know where they're from)...it sounds crazy, but hell Ove knows what he's doing - "Ccccssss" is a perfect example: low-fi keyboards meet high tight straight beats that mesh with a ragga-voice - it will work perfectly for a party at 4am. The tracks are selected tunes from 2003-2005, as Ove says: "A truly fine selection, a very unique record, a pleasant time is guaranteed for all - enjoy!"

Love On The Attack
Review: Sugardaddy are Groove Armada's Tom Findlay and singer-songwriter Tim Hutton who has written for Ian Brown and Sugarbabes amongst many others. Sugardaddy have their dancing feet firmly in the roots of black music, but will also crossover to appeal to a contemporary clued-up pop crowd. 'Chasing My Tail' is a raunchy guitar driven stomp through a path trodden by Prince and Mylo appealing to house, electro and indie dance fans. The more contemplative sound of 'Love On The Attack' is modern soul music at its best and should pick up support from more leftfield DJs such as Gilles Peterson and Rob Da Bank as well as appeal to Groove Armada fans who loved 'At The River'. Both tracks are taken from the forthcoming album 'It's Good To Get High With Your Wife' which is released in September on TuneTribe Recordings. A summer long promotional build is scheduled for the album which is the perfect soundtrack to car stereos from Ibiza to London to Glasgow. Sugardaddy have already been given a prestigious live slot on Radio 1's Ibiza Weekend.
