Review: Manu Dibango's grooves will never dull with time. The Cameroonian sax man made some of the most infectious, feel-good funk to ever transmit from the African continent, and here's one of his heavy-hitting high-watermarks, reissued by Soul Makossa. African Voodoo originally came out in 1972, a year that saw nearly all Dibango's most revered jams cut loose on an unsuspecting public. These sessions were recorded in France with Yvan Julien on trumpet, Slim Pezin on guitar, Jacques Bolgnesi on trombone and Lucien Dobat on drums to name but a part of the line-up, but of course it's Dibango holding court on the vibes, marimba, sax and organ who brings the unmistakable magic to the music.

Review: Jazz fans are in for a real treat here as Blue Note unleash a never before heard studio album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. It was recorded back in 1959 at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio and has Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt all playing as part of the recording. As the title suggests, it's a breezy, super cool record with seductive trumpets and icy drums all next to neat keys that encourage you to gently bop. After months of waiting, it proves more than worth all the anticipation.

Review: Bernard Purdie's Purdie Good! album is a cult classic of the funk world. Perdie is one of the most recorded rummers of his era and played on countless great records by everyone from Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan. His famous shuffling style also gave rise to a few solo sessions, one of which was this one. It was recorded by legendary engineer and audio obsessive Rudy Van Gelder in 1971 at his famous studio and mixes sup some of his own stylish originals next to his signature covers of the hits of the day. The take on James Brown's 'Cold Sweat' is a real standout. This reissue was cut from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to churn out top-quality re-edits and here they enlist Danny Krivit aka. Mr. K, the New York producer who has longstandingly helped prop up the dance scene there since the early 1960s. Krivit is responsible for perhaps some of the earliest and most significant disco and funk edits on Earth, so we're more than happy to hear these new ones out, in which he lends his ear to two mambi from Latin extraordinaires Sabu Martinez and Nico Gomez. Percussive clanks and boxy slaps abound on this audiophiles' charm.

Review: Bobby Hutcherson was one of the greatest vibraphone and marimba players in jazz, and he left behind a staggering legacy. By 1965 he was already recording his first album as bandleader for Blue Note, and just three years later he recorded Stick-Up!, his fifth for the label and one of his all time finest. Decca clearly agree as they now present the album again in their Tone Poet series. Backing Hutcherson up is Joe Henderson on tenor sax, McCoy Turner on piano, Billy Higgins on drums and Herbie Lewis on bass, and in that ensemble you get a golden example of post bop perfection.

Review: Muriel Grossmann is a prolific and prodigious talent. She plays sax, sings and composes and has penned plenty of albums, themes recent of which was Universal Code in summer 2023. Now the contemporary spiritual jazz maestro makes her debut on Jack White's U.S.-based Third Man Records label and once again comes some musical evolution. The name is inspired by her experiences of devotion resulting from her Buddhist meditation practice. It features plenty of extremely talented musicians and is a jazz album for the 21st century and beyond. This is a limited "sun & moon" orange vinyl version.

Review: British library musician and composer Alan Tew has one of his many magnum opuses, Drama Suite Part II, reissued by KPM. With the label keen to flaunt its first edition's going rate on Discogs, Tew's follow-up to the first part is a holy grail for library music collectors, owing to its performative subtlety, breadth of mood, and doubtless bottling of several modish styles of the time: noir, dark jazz, explotiation theme music. The track 'Stonechange' in particular hears many coded rerubs, with many versions and sub-versions, as was of the factual, rationalistic and methodical approach to the library music of the 1970s and early 80s. It's also got an indelibly clean sound: as with all KPM reissues, the audio for Drama Suite Part II comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis.

Review: Marc Collin hit lucky when as Nouvelle Vague he decided to interpret some post-punk classics in a bossa nova style over 20 years ago. Initially thought of as a one-off project, Nouvelle Vague was hugely successful and led to further albums, critical acclaim, TV adverts and riches beyond his wildest dreams (maybe). The fifth instalment proves that 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' by once again re-working post-punk era classics into a laid-back easy listening style. 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' is a shockingly well-made addition to the project, and, this being 2023, is the crispest and cleanest selection no less.

Review: Brazilian guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento and American saxophonist Sam Gendel join forces for The Room: ten tracks of broken jazzdance instrumentals conjoined by an almost telepathic synergy between artists. Springboarding from an initial collaborative gig at a restaurant owned by Gendel's cousin, the duo was thus born as a before-you-know-it gestalt; and in so coming together as a studio project, the artists realised their mutually jazz-laden upbringings, discovering even that both saxophonists had first picked up the brass at exactly the same age; both shared a fascination with environmentalism and ecology; both were superfans of experimental musician Hermeto Pascoal; et cetera. A serendipitous match, then, the album is synchronous to match, balancing five tracks per side in a sublime homeo-ecstatic equilibrium. Recorded in two days in a basement studio in Pacific Palisades, each track its own dive into the rhythms and regions of a South America without borders.

It draws on soundtrack and library sounds, jazz influences and hip-hop in its collection of some of his greatest moments from recent years. He has put out three superb albums before this and has won fans from the worlds of psyche and prog as well as deep diggers all over the world. This late-night album leans towards gentle compositions for piano and orchestral pop-jazz designed for flute, brass, and strings. It is another doozy from Wunder.

Review: Bobby Caldwell is one of those singers who has spanned multiple generations, not least because plenty of his work has been sampled in the years since by notable hip hop artists. He arrived on the scene in the 70s and soon became known for his velvet smooth soul sounds but also the versatility of his voice. His biggest single came on his debut self-titled album which like this one is now being reissued by Be With. Cat In The Hat came two years later and eventually went on to become gold-certified in the US and platinum in Japan. It's a fine mix of seductive funk sounds from the US great.

Review: The plainspoken title Previously Unheard Recordings was given to Stan Getz and Bill Evans' six-track set of rarities back in 1974. The result of a recording session completed over ten years earlier in 1963, all the pieces heard here shine bright lights on the pianist and saxophonist's synergistic powers, and come backed by auxiliary instrumental incantations from two bassists, Ron Carter and Richard Davis, as well as drumming by Elvin Jones. Emblematic of the cool jazz style, the overgirding mood is one of time-lapsed delight and lightness of being, but yet which is not fearful of life's downer moments; this loyalty to jazz's complexity of mood can be heard all the way from 'Night And Day' or the closing 'Grandfather's Waltz'.

It came at a time when Henderson was at the peak of his creative powers and leading a stellar ensemble that included Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, and Bobby Hutcherson. Review: Like so much of his often faultless work, Original Sufferhead by Fela Kuti is a powerful and politically charged album that embodies the essence of Afrobeat. For that reason, it is well deserving of this reissue as it remains relevant in more ways than one all these years after its original release in 1981 with its signature blend of funk, jazz, and traditional African rhythms, coupled with biting social commentary. The album confronts issues of oppression, corruption, and inequality, with Fela's impassioned vocals leading the charge. Each track is a call to action, urging listeners to rise against injustice and oppression. With its infectious grooves and thought-provoking lyrics, this is a timeless listen that continues to inspire and resonate with audiences around the world.

Review: Jackpot US reissue the 1967 Impulse! standout and instrumental masterpiece from Mel Brown, Chicken Fat. Initially working as a guitar player for such greats as Sonny Boy Williamson & Etta James, Impulse! eventually offered Mel Brown the chance to record his own material. Recorded in 1967 in Hollywood, CA, Brown amassed a group of session musicians who had previously played with Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye, and Dizzy Gillespie. Much of the album was arranged by Oliver Nelson, who worked with Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith and more. His touch is felt all over the record and helps solidify the journey; these sessions reflect the Sunset Strip and the energy of late 60s Los Angeles so accurately that you can almost hear the go-go boots hit the floor.

With nearly 30 years of release music together, they have built Skeewiff to a household name within the breakbeat community. Something Like That? is their first full album in over five years and it shows that they are still a force to reckon with. Like the cover graphic style could indicate, this is music mostly from popular 60s songs that the Skeewiff have doctored up and refreshed. Ones like 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' by Nancy Sinatra, Austin Powers theme song 'Soul Bossanova' or the crazy jungle mix-up of 'Yakety Sax' most known from the Benny Hill show. Featuring Eraserhood Sound's signature synth & soul production, the LP is a dazzling blend of jazz, rare groove, funk, soul and r&b. Outlaw's statement of intent is to transport the listener to a dissociated, dream-like state; a retreat into a fantasy from which one may not wish to return. That of a sonic holiday is indeed the vibe of this vibraphonic virtuosum, with landscapes of flute, wah-pedalled guitars and, of course, bell-like harmonies played by Outlaw himself, all evoke the sense of riding on the back of a paradisiacal bird, and into the anaesthetic distance.

Few albums hold the prestige of Getz/Gilberto which was released in 1964 and is a special collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim which very much represents a pinnacle moment in the fusion of jazz and bossa nova. Across its ten tracks, the album weaves a mesmerisng tapestry of melody and rhythm, casting a spell that continues to captivate listeners over half a century later. At the heart lies the symbiotic relationship between two musical giants: Stan Getz, the virtuosic tenor saxophonist renowned for his velvety tone and lyrical phrasing and Joao Gilberto, the Brazilian guitarist and vocalist whose soft, intimate delivery epitomizes the essence of bossa nova.

Echoes Of The Inner Prophet is, says the great label, "a musical voyage to explore the depth of the spiritual journey" and has been co-produced by Aldana and Lage Lund. The tenor saxophonist is joined three by the talented Lund on guitar, as well as piano from Fabian Almazan, Kush Abadey on drums and Pablo Menares on bass. The eight-track work is a mix of some all-new original compositions that "seek profound truths through introspection, intuition, and self-reflection" and chief amongst them is an opening track dedicated to the great Wayne Shorter.

Review: A true icon of jazz saxophone, Pharoah Sanders' 1969 album, Karma, is central to the artist's impressive oeuvre. A key player in the growth of the spiritual and free jazz movements through his involvement in John Coltrane's groups of the mid-1960s, Audio Clarity have ensured Sander's treasured work is granted a much-needed re-release. Featuring two gloriously layered twenty minute pieces - 'The Creator Has A Master Plan' on the A-side and 'Colors' on B -, these tracks showcase the distinctive sound that came to define Pharoah Sanders, crafted from an array of inventive technique such as overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic methods, as well as his use of 'sheets of sound' and non-Western percussion. Described by fellow saxophonist Ornette Coleman as "probably the best tenor player in the world", this is undoubtedly a keystone record for any jazz-lover's collection.

Review: It's always a good day when a new Burning Soul 7" drops in our laps and this new one is another standout that comes in very limited quantities on either black or white vinyl. It's the great work of Kidding and opens with 'Seriously' which is a Hammond-organ laced and flame hot funk workout with low-slung bass and lots of great grit riffs. The flipside picks up the pace with 'Komet Ride' which has even more energetic drums and even more mad finger action on the organ. Frenetic funk of the highest order.

Review: Pianist John Wright's Trio featured the man himself with Wendell Marshall and J.C. Heard. Between them, the three musicians very much embodied the more soulful end of the jazz spectrum that their native Chicago was known for across the 1960s. Never better was that captured on record than with Nice 'N' Tasty, which has never been reissued ever since its original release. It has been remastered from the original tapes and was his second album for the Prestige label. It's a sublime collection with his masterful piano at the centre of a suite of four originals and four standards which were all engineered by the great Rudy Van Gelder.

Review: New Hard, led by Toshiyuki Miyama, is one of Japan's leading big bands. Since the release of their seminal work Perspective in 1969, they've opened up new horizons in big band jazz with their cutting-edge sound. This work, Niou to Hato, is one such representative work of the new hard movement, which reached its zenith in 1972. Bandleader Kozaburo Yamaki was then in charge of the entire composition and arrangement, and deeply pursued one of his long-standing themes: Japan, the nation in and of itself. Thus we hear Japanese motifs, traditions, and scenes expressed via elaborate, multi-layered arrangements and performances; profound and dynamic melodies with a distinctly Japanese atmosphere are heard throughout and all are undeniably describable as mysterious. Starting with 'Seijinshiki', led by a strong groove, the album comes hem-lined with songs of deep flavor and great excitement. This is the true essence of new hard and its climax.

It captures the essence of a sun-kissed Greek island with its breezy rhythms and soulful improvisations as Foat's masterful piano and Votskos' evocative saxophone intertwine seamlessly to transport you to plenty of tranquil seaside vistas. The duo's synergy is palpable and evokes a sense of serenity and joy with each note from enchanting melodies to vibrant improvisations. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Flip for Toni Tornado's Black Rio anthem "Me Libertei". Fusing sleazy rock n roll with jazzy Latin soul, madly this is the first time it's ever graced a 45!

Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. Turkey's Senay features on the flip with "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman", an incandescent lover's ballad that makes a welcome change to the more widely heard Turkish psych sound of the '70s.

Review: Vibraphonist Khan Jamal has made many fine albums over the years, though few are quite as revered within the jazz scene as Infinity, a self-released set from 1984 that has been near impossible to find for years. While Jamal's fluid and attractive vibraphone playing is given an airing throughout the album, it never dominates the sound space, with the storied members of his backing sextet - including scene legends Byard Lancaster (alto sax, flute) and drummer Sunny Murray - all being given a chance to shine. Musically, it sits somewhere between spiritual jazz, jazz-funk and Latin jazz, with hectic dancefloor numbers (see the superb 'The Angry Young Man') being joined by a wealth of deeper, more laidback compositions.

For proof, check the latest volume: a first ever reissue of Kohsuke Mine's 1970 debut album, First. Full of energetic, hard-wired sax solos (provided, of course, by Kohsune himself), rubbery bass (courtesy of Larry Ridley), jazz-funk electric piano (Masabum Kiluchi on keys) and frenetic rhythms (laid down by Lenny McBrowne), the album is undoubtedly a landmark J-Jazz set and just gets better with each successive listen. It also includes a terrific interpretation of Thelonious Monk classic 'Straight No Chaser', which - in our considered opinion -is no bad thing.

Review: Second time around for Matthew Halsall's sixth solo album, Salute to the Sun, a set that many critics cited as being among the best contemporary jazz albums of 2020. As the title suggests, it's unarguably Halsall's most summery album to date, with the celebrated bandleader and trumpeter - accompanied by some of Manchester's most accomplished players - offering up a swathe of relaxed, life-affirming compositions that combine modal and contemporary jazz themes with gentle, Latin-influenced rhythms, breezy instrumentation (harps, kalimbas, marimbas and so on) and subtle nods towards Charles Stepney and Terry Callier. Some of the woodwind and brass solos are similarly superb, while the album's sun-soaked, easy-going atmosphere is alluring whatever the weather.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

Review: There's a growing feeling both inside and outside jazz that Kamasi Washington could well turn out to be one of the style's all-time greats. He's certainly making all the right moves, delivering thought-provoking concept albums of eyebrow-raising length that simply refuse to settle on one sound, rhythm, style or sub-genre. Heaven & Earth, his first album for almost three years, continues this trend, comprising angry instrumental answers to America's growing issues with class division and racism, Rotary Connection style workouts, Sun Ra-esque spiritual workouts, funk and soul-influenced burners, spiraling choral and orchestral affairs, and electric fusions of rubbery synth-funk and mind-altering jazz-blues. Typically, the results are never less than sublime, with Washington's virtuoso saxophone playing taking centre stage throughout.

As this reissue proves, it remains a fantastic album. Clark's vocals are superb throughout, soaring above gospel-influenced backing tracks rich in Jimmy Smith style organs, hazy horns and a rhythm section that strikes a perfect balance between groovy looseness and low-down tightness. The set's plentiful highlights including soaring torch song "Don't Wonder Why", the jazzy wooziness of "Maybe This Time", the surprisingly funky (but still laidback and groovy) "Charms Of The Arms Of Love" and impressive opener "I Keep It Hid".

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing of any serious jazz enthusiast: a recently rediscovered recording of a live performance made by the Pharoah Sanders Quartet at the Grand Auditorium at Studio 104, Paris, in 1975. The tenor saxophonist is undoubtedly the star of the show throughout, though the fluidity of the double bass playing, the loose-limbed drumming and the rush-inducing breeziness of the piano parts - especially on "Love Is Here" parts one and two, which reminded us of another Sanders classic "You've Got To Have Freedom" - are all equally as ear-catching. Musically, it's as inspired as you'd expect, nestling somewhere between the great maestro's greatest "astral jazz" recordings and more traditional forms of jazz.

Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

Review: Irreversible Entanglements' third full-length album 'Open The Gates' is a 7-track, 'agit-jazz' round-trip. The Chicago five-piece are no stranger to improvised oddities, having made their name via the style, and now present their conceptual magnum opus drawing on loose, yet fraught themes surrounding COVID lockdowns and post-apocalypse. From the driving ¾ opener 'Open The Gates' to the free jazz montage that is 'Lagrimas Del Mar', this is an existential affair; "I almost saw the whole world with my own four eyes", lead vocalist Camae Ayewa exclaims, narrating the entire album in a free-associative, Breakfast Of Champions style. This double LP is a cryptically rousing freakout - get it while you can, lest you might crack its code.

Santucci goes first with 'Mediterraneo,' a turbulent brew of double bass and prominent horn work that whips up a real storm as the drums come crashing down like waves on rocks. Jackson went on to work with scores of legends of Black American music, but this new album is something altogether his own. Working with Daniel Colias from Phenomenal Handclap Band, Jackson revived a long-dormant solo project from the 70s and brought it to fruition in a set of ascendant soul cuts which speak to Jackson's mighty legacy while offering something wholly contemporary. 'All Talk' bursts with jazz funk and boogie flourishes, while 'Path to Macondo / Those Kind of Blues' takes a more introspective trip into Jackson's illustrious musicality. Forget reissue culture for a minute - here's a bonafide legend still doing it in the here and now.

Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.
