Vol 1 (12" repress)

Deep House
  1. Love You More (5:19)
  2. Apl Tree (6:07)
Review: Sneaky remix action alert! We're not sure who DSO is (or are) - internet searches come up blank - but the two tracks on this 12" genuinely hit the spot. A-side 'Love You More' puts a new spin on the Sade classic of the same name, adding the '80s soul star's vocals to a hypnotic deep house groove, dreamy chords and occasional flecks of wine bar saxophone. Over on the flip the shadowy remixer(s) offer-up a radically different new take on Erykah Badu's 1997 hip-hop soul gem 'Apple Tree', reimagining it as a rolling chunk of deep house warmth. It's basically soul-fired, 21st century hip-house with enough depth and atmosphere to please deep house heads.

Review: Munich based producer Bryan Mueller aka Skee Mask presents his latest album titled Pool, via local imprint Ilian Tape which follows up his LP Compro which came out three years ago. There's an extensive collection of sonic experiments on offer on this one, such as
opening cut 'Nvivo' which goes down an IDM route, to the glassy eyed rave euphoria of 'LFO', the intelligent drum and bass reductions of 'Rio Dub' and UK influenced steppers like 'Crossection'.

  1. It's Just An Illusion (Coming To Ya)
  2. It's Just An Illusion (Coming To Ya) (instrumental)
Review: Backatcha Records dig into the vaults of New Jersey producer Randy Irwin for Toast's 1983 disco masterpiece 'It's Just An Illusion.' Toast was a band of Baltimore singer-songwriters and well-known New York session players and this was the only release on Irwin's Charm City imprint. But it is a belter. A slow motion tune with the sort of deep cut drums that sink you in for the ride, with lush flutes, sensuous falsetto vocal delivery and funky little guitar riffs. Flip it over for the instrumental version which allows the drum work to really shine.

Progressive House
  1. Small Alarms
  2. Modulator
  3. The Fall
Review: Guy J has been a real mainstay of the progressive scene for many years. Now that this sort of richly melodic, slow burning style is back en vogue it is his time to really shine. Lost & Found tap him up for this new three tracker, which opens with the shuffling depths and subtle pads of 'Small Alarms.' 'Modulator' ups the ante with a more twisted, peak time sound with sonic references to video game soundtracks of the early 90s. 'The Fall' is the deepest, widest, slowest tune of the lot and that means when the heavenly melodies do come they really make a mark.

  2. Superbold (7:05)
  3. Playing Trigs (7:08)
  4. Pivo's View (6:18)
Review: The Eastenderz label continues to kill it and define its own micro-scene with each and every release. Fabe is very much part of this little pocket where tech house, minimal and electronic funk all coalesce into club-ready pumpers with plenty of personalities. 'Tape Type' bobbles along with nice off kilter hits and a rasping bass. 'Superbold' heads to the cosmos with its smeared pads and expansive feel and 'Playing Trigs' then dials it back to silky deep house sounds with lush neon pads. Closer 'Pivo's View' is another airy cut with well-deployed vocal stabs and a general sense of carefree cool that it's hard not to love.

  4. Mistura - "Runnin'" (Dr Packer remix) (6:37)
Review: Operation Disco is a forthcoming album from Dr Packer and this four-track sampler shows up the sort of 80s boogie disco delights we can all look forward to. The artist is in a fine run of form right now and that continues through the slow slung bass and dazzling chords of his remix of soul-drenched opener Colors - 'Am I Gonna Be The One.' His take on The Sunburst Band & Leroy Burgess is more soulful and musical with a loose rhythm section getting you in the groove. The flip side features some blistering house music on 'Love Fantasy' and acrobatic vocals on chunky funker 'Runnin' by Mistura.

First up is label mainstay Carl Finlow, who once again exercises his considerable production prowess with a lithe and limber body popper, while Plant43 takes things stripped and sinister with the deliciously dark 'Forcefield Deactivation'. Review: When it comes to tasteful mash-ups and club-ready re-edits, DJ Soopasoul's Soopastole Edits series is always a reliable source of fresh dancefloor heat. He's in predictably fine form on this latest volume - the 26th in total, fact fans - which sees him re-animate an already killer Fatman Scoop cut. On the A-side, he places energy-raising snippets of the Harlem-raised, gravel-voiced rapper's 'Put Your Hands Up' atop a funky backing track crafted from loops lifted from a classic disco-funk workout. That fresh, sample-heavy instrumental re-edit can be heard in full on the flip, offering is a chance to wallow in the killer groove and tight, clipped guitar licks.

Review: Tropical Disco Records rolls out more of their sun kissed goodness on an impressive 21st volume of their self-titled series. As always there is a devious selection of disco dons taking charge of the course cuts, with Dominic Balchin getting the party started with big trumpet stabs and soul train grooves. Da Lukas slows things down and goes for a more deep, swinging cut with his 'Get Disco Vibes' and then scene veteran Moodena's 'Who Got The Keys?' gets more jazzy, with some fantastic keys and funky bass. Toby O'Connor closes out with a steamy and romantic slow jam, and in doing so rounds out an EP packed with the sort of positive vibes we all need right now.

  1. Mahlalela (Lazy Bones) (edit By Mr K) (5:15)
  2. Barrio Nuevo (edit By Mr K) (4:52)
Review: Mr. K is back with a killer double-sider of African funk and Latin disco.

Letta Mbulu was one of many South African artists to flee the country as Apartheid choked the nation, arriving in New York in 1965 and reconnecting there with fellow countryman Hugh Masekela. Masekela had already developed a relationship with producer Stewart Levine, and when the two formed their own label, Chisa, they quickly signed Mbulu. By 1970, Mbulu, Masekela, and Mbulu's husband Caiphus Semenya, a saxophonist in Hugh Masekela's Union of South Africa group, had all relocated to California. There they formed lasting relationships with members of the Crusaders, who had just dropped the "Jazz" from their name and begun releasing a cool hybrid of funk, soul and worldly jazz. When it was time for Letta to record her first album for Chisa, the Crusaders backed her in the studio with powerful horn arrangements by Masekela. "Mahlalela (Lazy Bones)" was written by Semenya and was released as a single, immediately finding a fan in the young Danny Krivit back in NYC, who included it in his very first DJ sets. "A truly stand-out funky African track," Danny describes it, pointing to the distinctive vocals and instantly immersive atmosphere that envelopes listeners from the first notes. As sought after as the original is, this superior remastered mix used for Danny's edit on this release has never appeared in the 7-inch format. With a wide stereo field and a crisp, powerful punch to the horns and drums, this release takes this already iconic cut to a new level.

Bandleader, vibraphonist and timbales player Louie Ramirez explicitly attempted to cross over in 1976 with his Different Shade of Black LP, covering big disco sensations "Do It Anyway You Wanna" and "Bad Luck." But the connoisseur's deep cut on the album was always "Barrio Nuevo," which took the creative approach of alternating smooth hustle sections with intense jazzy Latin jam breaks laced with timbales and electric piano and sounding almost like an East Coast version of Santana. The contrasts provided a cool listening experience, but tended to break the mood on the dancefloor. On this edit, DK leans hard into the Latin side of the tune and builds the dance floor energy with a rearrangement that is guaranteed to work up a sweat.

Loud and cut for the dancefloor on a small-hole 7-inch, it's another Mr. K sure shot!

  1. You're So Fine (2:57)
  2. Sweetest Thing On This Side Of Heaven (3:45)
Review: This excellent 7" single from Athens Of The North boasts more desirable deep funk business. This time dusty-fingered digger Euan Fryer has secured the rights to a sought-after seven from Papa Bear & His Cubs, a long-serving combo whose sole "45" has long been a sought-after item amongst serious soul and funk heads. "You're So Fine" may sound like it was recorded in a cement mixer on a cheap portable tape recorder, but musically it's soul bliss - a wonderfully languid, loved-up song blessed with a superb lead vocal and languid instrumentation. "Sweetest Thing On This Side Of Heaven" is, if anything, even more dewy-eyed - a seductive slow jam whose saccharine lyrics are delivered with heartfelt passion.

He hails from the same small place that gave us Lyman Woodard and now gifts us with a super sweet pair of instrumentals. 'That Richard & Karen Funk' is a woozy, sax laced number with slouching drums and an after dinner feel. 'Wake Up!' raises the tempo a little, with steamy horns and nice jazzy keys lighting up the drum work with a hint of 60s charm and subtle, sensuous little vocal stabs.

Review: Sushitech continue to celebrate the depth and breadth of their catalogue with another 15th anniversary reissue in the form of this surefooted two-tracker from Delano Smith and Norm Talley. This is the sweet spot where Detroit house and Detroit techno intertwine, leading in with the dreamy haze and steady trucking groove of 'Constellation'. 'Detroit 2-Step' has a spicier demeanour which artfully merges sultry sax with an ear-snagging riff which sounds organic and metallic all at once. Again, the groove is locked down and impossible to shake off course, making this heady club tackle for those who want to season their set with some of the finest rollers in the game.

The pair met at the same secondary school, with Dave paying from a young age in church. The two mixes of these tunes are exclusive to this 7" and not available anywhere else. The first is a lush bit of deep house, soul and R&B, with spoken word whispers and buttery smooth croons over a nice 80s drum groove. It's utterly gorgeous and seductive and the All-Dayer mix is a little more blissed out. Essential.

Review: Italian Duo Micky More & Andy Tee are a much-loved pair who cook up real magic across two different versions of Spanish house titan David Penn's 'Scream 4 Love.' The Main Room Mix has real crossover potential - it is as likely to unite a large, sun-kissed festival crowd as it is a group of shoppers in a high street fashion store. The pianos, vocals and drums are all super smooth and seductive. The jazz mix then layers in some nice big trumpet leads and noodling basslines that would make Love Vega proud. Summer is here, and with house like this playing, it never sounded better.

Review: Crackazat's Period Works album, which dropped on CD and digital in the autumn of 2020, was a wholehearted celebration of his musical influences, most notably mid 1990s U.S house and garage, disco and jazz-funk. This four-track sampler presents some of the tracks exclusive to the album, naturally swerving those that had previously appeared on wax. Opener 'Waterfalls' is a superb slab of soaring, string-drenched disco-soul revivalism, while 'In My Dreams' is a bouncy, piano-driven slab of U.S garage of the kind that Dave Lee once used to make under his (now discontinued) Joey Negro alias. Crackazat delivers more low-slung disco-boogie brilliance on flipside opener 'Sensationalised', before once more showcasing his love of warming and soulful us house on 'Fire Drift'. Simply sensational.

Review: The Gallery has these rare grooves up for auction, so they advise you to place your bid quickly. Spoken like true gallerists (or collectors?) this label has presented two previous displays of artistic editing that are still enigmatic to this very day, and their next one retains the high standard in artistic quality. On the A side of this 12' we have the low slung disco disco inferno of 'Steady On Now' packed with a vibrant brass section, cosmic synths and some fine guitar work. On the flip, you're in luck (what more can we say) on 'Not You Again' which has that classic Salsoul kind of vibe all the way, oh and that vocal - good times!

  1. Beyond The Stars (5:52)
  2. Beyond The Stars (GU Moog dancers dub) (7:50)
Review: Poland is slowly becoming something of a house music hotspot, thanks in part to the efforts of high-profile artists such as Catz N Dogz and long-serving scene veterans such as Martin Mamzer AKA Aphreme. The latter is in fine form on 'Beyond The Stars', which marks the vinyl debut of his previously digital-only Octave Moods imprint. In its original form, the track is a wonderfully expansive, warming and tactile slab of deep house perfection in which Genevieve's sweet lead vocals (and occasional spoken word interjections from Mamzer) rise above an attractive mixture of old school deep house beats, spacey Moog bass, starry chords and twinkling melodies. Glenn Underground excels on his flipside remix, offering a tighter groove, heavier analogue bass, even more spacey synths and a dreamier mood.

Review: This glorious package of remixes of the BaianaSystem band draws together contemporary Brazilian sounds with plenty of modern dance floor flourishes. A?gua is the standout track from their 2018 LP and is a poem to the bands native Bahia people with the legendary Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. It is perfect material to rework for different settings and deep house don Jimpster does that with his fat bottomed, tropical remix then stripped back dub. Brazilian producer Diogo Strausz joins forces with RNT boss JKriv on the flip for a more drawn out and cosmic exploration that pumps up and down on weight bass and that lovely loose jumble of percussion.

  1. I'll Do More (2:42)
  2. Talk Of The Town (2:41)
Review: Brewerytown Beats outta Philadelphia has rediscovered some soul gold here. The tunes were buried deep in the Sigma Archives at Drexel University and come from 60s and 70s record session which, at the time, often lead to Frank Sinatra style jazz sounds. These two explore something different, though. 'I'll Do More' has killer drums that are heavy as you like. The horns, too, make a devastating emotional impact next to the pained vocal that is full of yearning. 'Talk Of The Town' is slightly more optimistic with its big ethereal string sounds and soaring vocals, but more of those nagging horn and drum sounds to keep you grounded.

Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

Review: Spike Jonze's Her is, quite frankly, one of the most profoundly moving movies of the last decade. Posing the question we should all be asking - what happens when people, in this case a writer who is paid to pen personal letters from clients to their loved ones, start falling in love with their computer operating systems? The answer is an existential journey through the greatest unanswerable quandaries of all time; what makes us human? At what point do we become conscious? How long until Siri becomes truly useful?

The soundtrack probably didn't stand out to as many people as the plot and the cinematography, but as this hugely accomplished album version proves, Arcade Fire and Owen Pallet did an incredible job with creating an original score of music that lives up to the ambition of the film - through soft piano sonatas, spiralling synthesised crescendos, and achingly beautiful strings you can see the gamut of human emotions.

Review: The ever reliable East End Edits return with more anonymous white label minimal house shenanigans. On their eleventh edition in the series they have a surefire UK tech house number that rolls tough, is packed full of swing and with classic NYC house tropes all the way. A chord progression fuelled by glistening keys, bumping bass and familiar RnB vocals from the early 2000's that all come together for something pretty special. Again, it's anyone's guess who's responsible for this one, but the label is tight lipped as always - tip!

Review: The late James Kelly Duhon hailed from Beaumont in Texas, and in the late1960s he was in a group known as The Ascots. He put out a small but well formed selection of tunes and those included the two pressed up here to this limited 45rpm. 'So Trusting' is a big number with noted bass and big orchestra string stabs. On the backside is 'So Far Down' which actually got a national release on Mainstream Records while Duhon was still touring. It's a deeply affecting bit of soul musing on the lack of employment and a longing for the good times.

Here appearing on his pwn Novel Sound he opens with 'So Good', an intense track which layers up the steel plated synth stabs, vast, grainy hi hats and swooshing and swwobpgin synth sounds. Review: On the latest dip into the bulging vaults of their iconic deep house label Prescription, Ron Trent and Chez Damier take us back to 1998 and the standout single from Urban Sound Gallery, a collaboration between Trent and Anthony Nicholson. 'Life 4 Living' remains a genuine deep house classic: a warming, effortlessly soulful affair in which Monica Elam's expressive vocals seemingly drift across a backing track rich in Afro-house influenced beats, immersive and dreamy pads, fluid piano solos and a wonderfully tactile bassline. As it did back in the 1990s, the vocal version comes backed with a similarly impressive dub that boasts a bit more energy and feels tailor-made for early morning club plays.

One thing you can be sure of with music n this label is that it will be big, crowd-pleasing tackle that never forgets its roots. There is real religious rapture in the thrilling Doug Godbizniss mix of 'The Mighty Douglas' which gets the EP underway in fine style. 'Mouna Power' is another great example of Bosq's ability to successfully meld together elements of Afrobeat, Afro-Cuban music and tropical grooves, adding layers of colourful instrumentation (bass, keys, horns, guitars and so on). The excellent original version comes backed with a longer, slightly tougher but no less warming and kaleidoscopic 'Dancefloor Dub'. It contains most of the vocals, more percussion and a greater role for the killer bassline and is probably our pick of the mixes

You always feel like you've pushed through the other side of the mirror when it comes to CAN. A mysterious, groove-laden, funk-infused yet utterly lucid place where guitar hooks seem to come out of the walls, rhythmic hypnosis draws listeners ever-deeper into a place that, while perhaps not entirely theirs, is one which they helped build in the outer limits of late-1960s surrealist rock.

Laying the foundations for early progressive and krautrock with an avant-garde approach to songwriting, by the time this Stuttgart gig took place they had almost a decade of work to go at, and yet as the tracklist suggests the band always had improvisation at their core in a live setting. Concerts that would transport crowds far beyond the venue, into thick layers of melody, hooks and strange effects, every single recording of every show is a genuine moment in history never to be repeated again.

His own Up The Stuss label is the home for his latest project, a collab with SAM on a bunch of hugely useful club tracks. Each one is aimed at the club, but different moments of the night. There is a lovely depth and warmth to 'Spaceship' that gets you in the mood, while the likes of 'Here To Catch You' are dreamy 5am joints and 'Sirine' is busy but balmy, with deft synth motifs and kinetic drum work that sweeps you off your feet. Lovely stuff.

'Believe in Love' is as luscious and warming as you'd expect, with the producer cannily combining sumptupus disco loops and pitched-up female vocal snippets with locked-in mid-tempo house beats and occasional energy-raising sample cut-ups. On the flip he takes his scalpel to Prince cut 'Forever In My Life', delivering a chugging, low-slung version that sounds like the Purple One jamming with Sottish loop-jammer the Revenge.

Here's another courtesy of one-man production factory Kaidi Tatham, who continues to hit the mark with each successive release. Flipside 'Sooner or Later' is equally as positive and righteous, with funkier broken beats making way to dancefloor jazz-funk beats and more mazy, sun-ripened piano solos.

At times it explodes with righteous anger, at others it simmers in quiet artistry with assured lyrics like "I am what I am and I'm good at it." The Mercy prize winning, Grammy Award nominees bring new energy and inspiration to plenty of recognisable rock tropes with elements of weirdness and transgression making the music all the more thrilling.
