Review: Phantasy Sound's main man Daniel Avery has linked up with modular wizard Alessandro Cortini for a debut full length, "Illusion Of Time". It came together over many years, with no real concept or constraints but it has still managed to make a powerful impact despite its spare, lo-fi, ambient vibes. There are heavier, darker tracks like "Inside The Ruins" that are brilliantly bleak, but also thoughtful meditations like the title track, which has some magical piano playing at its core. It's the rays of light amongst the darkness that make this such a beguiling and beautiful listen, and a perfect soundtrack to long lost days at home during lockdown.

  3. Dutch Gold (6:44)
  4. Genesis (6:04)
Review: Krystal Klear knows a thing or two about making big dance floor tracks, and now he proves that again with tunes inspired by Jim Henson's psychedelic and cinematic nightclub fantasy of the late 1960's. The results are further-retro disco dazzlers with piebald leads, crystalline pads and chattering claps that all fizz with energy. "Future Fantasy" is the brightest of the lot, while "One Night In P Bar" gets more dark and dirty. "Dutch Gold" is an all out disco-trance anthem to get hands in the air and "Genesis" brings you back down to earth with long legged disco grooves and shimmering arps.

  1. Nicola Cruz - "Tu Recuerdo" (5:02)
  2. FE - "Tarde O Temprano" (4:55)
  3. Quixosis - "Vibras" (4:05)
  4. NTFL - "Vacio" (3:24)
Review: Calypso are back with another clutch of exciting mavericks orbiting the weirder end of the contemporary club spectrum. There are minimal wave influences to be tacitly detected on Nicola Cruz's "Tu Recuerdo" as well as kind of stripped back acid freakiness, while in FE's "Tarde O Temprano" there's even more gritty, industrial tinged bite in the billowing surges of machine rhythms. Quixosis takes some wonderfully lilting traditional percussion and gives it a freaky treatment which makes for the kind of slow jam Weatherall would have wielded with aplomb. NTFL finishes this ear-snagging compilation off with the plaintive, Dembow-tinted "Vacio".

  4. Ether - "Detonator" (8:08)
  5. Escape Artist - "Rain Eternal" (5:08)
  6. Constants Of Nature - "Slow Symmetry Breaking" (6:21)
Review: Kalahari Oyster Cult tends to prioritize new music, though when boss man Colin Volvert does unearth an overlooked gem he has no hesitation in reissuing it. The "Systems EP", a multi-artist extravaganza that launched obscure Denver label Terraform Records way back in 1995, is one such gem. The A-side boasts a trio of varied but consistently good cuts from ambient techno explorer Red Shift (think acid-fired electro psychedelia, drowsy early morning bliss and picturesque downtempo goodness), while the flipside boasts a track apiece from three different producers. Ether's "Detonator" sounds like peak Meat Beat Manifesto (all razor-sharp acid lines, heavy bass and infectious breaks), Escape Artist's "Rain Eternal" is a languid electronica treat, and Constants Of Nature's "Slow Symmetry Breaking" is a woozy drift through outer space ambient.

  3. Effortlessness (Benjamin Brunn Gold Plated Diamonds version) (5:19)
  4. Effortlessness (Benjamin Brunn Chrome Plated Diamonds version) (7:55)
Review: Since it was Area that started the Kimochi Sound revolution just under a decade ago, it seems fitting that the publicity-shy artist has delivered the label's first release of a new decade. There are no new Area tracks here though, but rather a quartet of fresh reworks of classic cuts. Natan H kicks off proceedings with a deep, hypnotic, trippy and undeniably wonky revision of "Dare To Be Different", before Leif weighs in with a deliciously melodious, soft-focus revision of picturesque track "The Face Yours Reminds Me Of". Benjamin Brunn takes over on Side B and delivers two contrasting versions on "Effortlessness": the deep, wayward electro-meets-dub house drowsiness of the "Gold Plated Diamonds" mix and the heady ambient techno brilliance of the "Chrome Plated Diamonds" mix.

  3. Subradeon - "A New Sun Is Rising" (5:25)
  4. Subradeon - "The Light" (5:26)
Review: Hardgroove continues its productive run in the fiercer realms of techno science with a showcase of two utterly essential artists picked from the current crop. Mella Dee is sounding absolutely on fire on "01302", which comes in two distinct but equally brilliant versions. With both, strict rhythmic structures work as a vessel for insanely catchy synth riffs as tasteful as they are infectious - scene-stealing techno at its finest. Subradeon brings a hefty dose of Robert Hood-flavoured minimal funk to "A New Sun Is Rising", and does it supremely well. "The Light" follows a similarly looped up path, but here the synth line is a more fluid rush that gives the track a softer landing without losing its imposing stature. This is big room tackle with brains to match the brawn.

  4. Do The Du - "Peckham" (7:43)
Review: Naked Eye People's Stealth Mission series continues apace with this latest sure shot of techno tricksters to get you jacking in all the best ways. I Love Acid flag-bearer Posthuman is up first with "Rejektacid", a pepped up 303 burner with a sharply executed drum machine backbone. Naked Eye People's "Balsa Wood Blues" follows up with a hopped up take on dub techno that merges with breakbeat to create something ravey yet ultimately trippy. HVL adopts his Kiyadama alias for "Slammbeat", which gets dutifully edited into shape by Ben Sims. Do The Du finish things off with some truly gnarly acid from the nightmare realm.

Review: For the first release on their freshly minted Euphoric State sub-label, London label OPIA has turned to '90s survivors A2 & Stopouts, a trio of producers who first made their name as British tech-house pioneers in the late 1990s. The four tracks showcased on "Go With The Flo" apparently date from this period, though this is the first time they've seen the light of day. There's much to admire throughout, from the rolling, funk-fuelled house grooves and intergalactic pads of opener "You Gotta", to the jacking tech-funk of closing cut "Suits You", via the glassy-eyed rush of "Techfest", where sci-fi motifs and dream house electronics rise above bumping beats and a deliciously squelchy bassline.

  3. Atlas4088 (5:54)
Review: Last year Anunaku debuted on Whities with an essential EP of tribal-infused breakbeat bass music and clanking, speaker-bothering Afro-techno. It was an insanely good debut and this follow-up on 3024 is every bit as impressive. Restless African hand percussion, intergalactic electronics, spacey riffs and tactile house beats combine brilliantly on A-side "Stargate", while fiendishly heavy flipside opener "Teleported" is a wicked mix of crunchy breakeats, elongated hoover bass, tight vocal stabs and mind-altering snake charmer solos. Closing cut "Atlas4088" meanwhile is a locked-in Afro-techno drum track with just the right amount of ethereal flute sounds.

Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

Review: Italian minimal house expert Spacetravel is back with the third release on his newly inaugurated Travelling Without Moving imprint. It's a largely brooding affair on the A side of 'Labirinto 2020': from the reductionist afterhours of hypnotiser "Test 00" which treads a similar path to the likes of Losoul, to the breakbeat-driven industrial epic "Control" which is quite unlike anything we've heard from the Berlin-based artist before. On the flip he's managed to cram in three tracks, which you'll be pleased to know are a touch more uplifting - not that we found the A side altogether unpleasant. From the addictively groovy 4/4 electro funk of "Cosmic Charter" to the neon-lit Sunday morning deepness of "Inverno", there's a wide variety of moods and grooves for any occasion on this fine EP.
