Review: The Yoruba Singers reinterpreted Guyana folk music and infused it with Afro-roots and culture on this double A-side 7". Now for the first time every it gets reissued on vinyl. This release came a year after the group's debut album Ojinga's Own and were recorded in Barbados and released on the Green Shrimp label. They were big regional has with dancers lapping the grooves throughout the Caribbean and South America. The sounds are said to be the building blocks for what went on to become known as the Champeta Criolla sound in the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

Review: There is scant little information out there about Yoanson & Karamie. What we do know is that they were young artists from the French African diaspora who met with Nessim Saroussi and his label Ness Music in the late 80s and were encouraged to record the music presented here. It is their only official EP and it is a brilliant mix of Afro-tropical percussions, disco, electro and vocals that call to mind the likes of Arthur Russell. Philippe de Lacroix-Herpin is the man festered here as Prof Jah Pinpin and he brings some of his signature saxophone brilliance to flipside jaunt 'The Final Bird (Le Temps D'une Vie)'.

Review: Ethio-jazz composer Dawit Yifru dropped a real classic when he first released his self-titled solo instrumental album. It is strictly a compilation of 11 songs that he wrote and recorded during the 70s and have since been restored and remastered from original cassettes. They helped to make him one of the most notable artists in one of the most important eras in Ethiopia's music history as he mixed up Ethiopian Chickchika music, Twist, Congolese Rumba, and Waltz styles that all represented that time in music in the Horn of Africa country. This collection is the first in a new series from Muzikawi's Archive & Research project which looks to shine a light on some of Ethiopia's most celebrated but not internationally renowned sounds.

Review: In 2002, the Japanese government recognized bamboo flute maestro Hozan Yamamoto as a "living national treasure". It was in honor of his lengthy career in music, and in particular the way he championed a traditional Japanese instrument even when he was turning his hand to Western music. "Beautiful Bamboo Flute", an album first released in 1971 and almost impossible to find since, is a superb example of this. It sees him deliver haunting, emotional and life-affirming solos over funky jazz, big band and fusion backing tracks that tend towards the fresh and funky. Review: Discodelic does not muck around when it comes to putting out their music on vinyl - they serve up a standard black version but often also a cured pressing alongside it. And that's what we have here - a yellow and red splattered vinyl 7" with a booklet featuring some backstory, and all heavily limited to just 100 copies. Musically this one packs a punch too with Wilson Boys opening up with 'Funky Bocas' - a busy Afro rhythm with tight interwoven guitar lines and big vocal cries. On the flip is Alma Fuerte's 'Baila Muchacha' with its hypnotic mix of aw rock guitars, shuffling samba rhythms and flamey vocals.

Review: Togolese Afro-funk band Vaudou Game has been responsible for some of the most essential music on Hot Casa Music, so the arrival of a new single from them following an extended absence of three years is positive news indeed. A-side 'Bella' is little less than superb: a sparkling slab of Afro-soul in which spacey Moog lines and the band's own distinctive vocals ride a gloriously sunny, percussion-rich groove. Review: We're always happy to have another reissue of Nana Vasconcelos works. this one from Altercat, 'Nana Nelson Angelo Novelli' is a cult album of Brazilian music from 1975, originally on the Saravah. It is a record which epitomizes of the sound of Clube da Esquina, which is the title given to an e explosion of sound fusions that occurred in Minais Gerais at around that time. It takes in rock 'n' roll, psychedelia, traditional bossa nova and percussive sounds and is well demonstrated here. Various moods, from the psychedelic 'No Sul do Polo Norte' to the funky 'Tiro Crusado' to the haunting 'Aranda' all make this a classic.

While previous instalments have largely focused on heavy Afro-funk and Afro-soul, this fifth edition showcases material recorded during the disco and boogie era (1976-82). The ten included tracks are superb, with highlights including the fuzzy, Clavinet-driven thrills of "Sweet Sidney (Edit)" by Black Bells Group, the heavy grooves and dancing synth lines of Gyedu Blay Ambolley's "Highlife", the spacey Afro-boogie badness of Fotso's "French Girl" and the flash-fried disco-funk celebration that is Jide Obe's spacey, Moog-sporting "Too Young". Review: Back in 2005, the Luaka Bop and Stones Throw labels jointly issued World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's A Real Thing - The Funky Fuzzy Sounds Of West Africa with the former releasing the CD edition and the latter a double LP version. As the elongated title suggests, the third edition of Luaka Bop's World Psychedelic Classic series swung the focus to West African music from the seventies and really opened people up to the psychedelic sounds of Manu Dibango, William Onyeabor, Gasper Lawal and a whole other host of artists from West Africa. Luaka Bop have evidently secured the rights for a vinyl reissue of the compilation, and anyone who indulged in their popular fifth volume focused on William Onyeabor will relish the opportunity to pick this up again.

Almost 30 years on, those tapes have finally been mined for Sweet As Broken Dates, a brilliant compilation that finally showcases some of the multitude of gems that were recorded and released in the country between the late '60s and early '90s. It's a brilliant collection, all told, full of exotic music that combines Western styles - soul, funk, disco, pop, reggae, boogie, psychedelic rock and even early hip-hop- with musical influences from the wider region (most notably Arabic and tropical music from islands in the Indian Ocean). Review: Since launching a few years back, Jannis Sturtz's Habibi Funk label has done a terrific job in sourcing and reissuing generally brilliant music from North Africa and the Middle East. The label's second multi-artist compilation does a good job in proving this point by offering up a pleasingly eclectic range of "historic popular music from the Arab world". There's much to enjoy, from the Steely Dan-esque West Coast warmth of Douaa's 'Haditouni' and the heavy psych-funk of 'Ahl Jedba' by Fadoul, to the synth-sporting riff on the Bee Gees' 'Staying Alive' that is Najib Al Housh's 'Ya En Daly', and the slow motion, reggae-driven sunshine pop of Ibrahim Hesnawi's 'Tendme'.

Review: The mighty Soundway Records label head Miles Cleret and DJ/collector Jeremy Spellacey turn their expert digging and curatorial skills to the Soca Dub & Electronic Calypso sounds of 1979 to 1998 on this bumper new triple pack. The 17 tracks touch on obscurities, instrumentals and dubs, vocal edits and all manner of roots, boogie, reggae, house, soul and disco gems. It makes for a never less than heart swelling collection that bring immediate sunshine to even the most rainy, cold days in the north of England. Highlights are plentiful, but our picks of the bunch are Bill Campbell's "Body Beat" which does exactly what it says on the tin, Adonijah's disco stomper ("It's Alright") and Levi John's "Soca", a lo-fi oddity with brilliantly loose drum work.

Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing Brazil 45s series, Mr Bongo has decided to change tack. The two tracks showcased here are from the golden age of Brazilian boogie. On the A-side you'll find Marcos Valle's "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago", a largely overlooked cut from his 1981 full-length Vontade De Rever Voce. While not as instantly as infectious as some of his better-known singles, it's still superb; a breezy, blue-eyed soul cut full of rising horns and sweet Portuguese vocals. On the B-side, you'll find Don Beto's 1978 disco-funk jam "Nao Quero Mais", a superb track that was seemingly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".

Review: 'Girassol' has long been one of the hardest-to-find gems in Brazilian great Marcos Valle's vast catalogue of sun-drenched musical treats. It was initially recorded and released as a promo-only seven-inch, with copies being handed out to customers of a Brazilian supermarket chain. This, then, marks the track's first ever commercial release. In its' original form (side A), 'Girassol' is a lusciously short, soft-focus affair - a two-minute chunk of laidback, jazz-funk influenced South American boogie bliss with the kind of high production values that you'd expect from Valle during his successful post-disco period. As with the original 7", it comes backed with the slightly more elaborate 'Playback' instrumental mix, where gentle, eyes-closed saxophone solos come to the fore.

Review: Dialogo Records continues to explore the vast back catalogue of Italian soundtrack and library music specialist Piero Umiliani, a composer famed for combining his love of jazz with all manner of global musical styles. First issued on his own Omicron label in 1975, Polinesia saw Umiliani and his band of talented session musicians give their updated, mid-1970s take on the exotica sound first made famous by Martin Denny. It's a hugely evocative and entertaining listen, with Umiliani's compositions making extensive use of lilting pedal steel, sweaty percussion, spacey analogue synthesizers, cheery chants, toe-tapping rhythms, easy listening orchestral arrangements and post-funk grooves. It's quirky and eccentric of course, but also hugely alluring and brilliantly performed.

Review: For its last few outings, Gamm has rather been heading back to its roots. But now the label reverts away from hip-hop and back towards the Latin and disco sounds it has become best known for. And that's no bad thing as Koichi Toyama turns on his machines and gets the scalpel out to serve up some distinctive edits of four fiery broken beat and nu jazz gems. There are playful sax leads on the opener, muted vibes on the shuffling samba stylings of 'Santa Monica' and busier Rhodes chords on 'Grama Grass' before the jazz dancer that is 'Samba Chimba' offers another golden moment to close.
