Review: This Best Of The Morwells album originally landed back in 1981 but has not degraded in any way over the ensuring 40+ years. It is a superb collection of vocal roots that first came on the American label Nighthawk Records and might be best known for standout hits like 'In God We Trust' and 'Africa' as well as 'Educate Your Mind.' The lyrics muse on plenty of still relevant socio-political topics while riding on nice deep rhythms with earthy drums and meandering leads. The band went on to become well-regarded and prolific session musicians in Jamaica and you might well have heard of them... none other than The Roots Radics.

Review: As well as navigating the realms of dub and reggae, infusing each track with his signature vintage sound and infectious grooves, Prince Fatty is well known for taking famous songs and flipping them into reggae territory, a wonderful mix of the familiar and the unepxected that usually works wonders on the dancefloor. With the fantastic 'Black Rabbit,' dub don Prince Fatty masterfully tackles Jefferson Airplane's 60s anthem 'White Rabbit', which took its inspiration from Lewis Carroll's surreal story Alice In Wonderland but hooked those references up to the drug experiences of those countercultural rtimes. The A-side is graced by with the vocals of regular Fatty collaborator Shniece, whose performance does more than simply ape Grace Slick's, adding lines and heaps of her own personality, while rich basslines, swirling echoes and soulful melodies all showcase some exceptional production skills. Naturally, there's a dub version on the B-side, and all in all this a testament to Prince Fatty's enduring influence in the contemporary reggae scene.

Review: The Joe Gibbs label is busy reissuing some classic and often fairly sought-after roots tunes from back in the day and next up is this one which comes on a limited run of 45rpms. It kicks off with Junior Murvin who is of course best known for his iconic 'Police & Thieves' tune used in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. AJ Brown is a noted vocalist who here serves up a rare street soul lovers' version of The King of Pop's 'Human Nature.' It's a passionate and emotive vocal work over a nice rolling beat and on the flipside it comes with an excellent instrumental dub version that allows the synth work to shine more and the funky bassline to come to the fore as the vocals are drenched in echo and reverb. Review: The John Collins vaults have been dug deep into for this new 12" on SpeciaL Request. Both of the tunes have been remastered and reissued and were written by the great overs rock maestro John Collins himself. First up is the super sweet and infectiously lumpy rolling reggae of Victor Romero Evans's 'At The Club.' It's a blissed out tune with a fat bottom and silky vocals. On the flip is the much more spaced out and cosmically minded dub, 'Lift Off,' by The Detonators. It's a heady tune that invites you in deep and is perfect for those stoner Sunday sessions.

Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Review: Jo Wallace's Ramrock label has always proved adept at blending reggae, dub and lovers rock with elements of jazz, soul and Balearic beats. You'll find a similar blend of sounds at the heart of the label's latest 12" - a fine, roots reggae style cover version of Aaron Neville's much-loved rare groove jam 'Hercules' by Asian Dub Foundation singer Ghetto Priest. Review: Many of you reading this may recognise this song from Dennis Brown's rendition on his iconic Visions LP, but this version actually predates that one. It was originally penned by Winston MacAnuff, also known as the Electric Dread, and features vocals by Earl Sixteen. It has previously debuted as a 7" on Gibbs' Belmont label in 1975, while Sixteen went on and recorded it again for Derrick Harriott on the Wild Flower label a year later. This rendition is often considered the definitive cut, but we shall leave you to decide on that one.

Review: Bim Sherman and Sound Iration came together for this one in 1989 on WAU! Mr. Modo Recordings. Since then it has become a cult classic that will cost a few quid on the second-hand market. But it's not easy to find and so now comes a reissue by Partial. It features two of the three tunes that were on the original with identical artwork. In original form, 'Dream' is a blissed-out bit of sun-kissed electronic reggae. The drums are crisp, Bim's vocals are clean and the organ chords suck you in deep. 'Dream' (version part 3) is a subtle rework that brings out different leads.

Review: Sunset's reissue series of Harry J releases continues with this gem from the late, great Freddie McKay's 1986 collaboration with The Jah Apostles, one of the last productions to feature the singer - who seamlessly navigated from the early ska days right up to the digital era - before his untimely death in November of the same year. McKay's soulful vocals ride effortlessly over the Apostles' mesmerising rhythms here, meaning that it is impossible not to be transported listeners to the golden shores of Jamaica at sundown. Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Review: Dubshop.nl is on a roll at this early stage in its life and for the third outing from the Dutch dub lovers we get a nice white 10" with some real heady tackle from The Disciples. Originally produced and mixed by Russ D. at the Backyard Studio and dropped in 2004 on Boom Shaka, this reissue brings two softer delights back to the fore. 'Oh Jah Jah' is a nice, slow-motion churner with mystic flute leads and natty chords. It stretches out over eight mesmerising minutes and the flipside 'Jah Militia Dub' slows things down with amore organic feel and rich percussion.

This one with Woodfield Road All Stars is as smooth as they come. 'Love Has Got A Hold Of Me' has slow motion grooves and lazy drums with the most gently persuasive acoustic riffs next to soul drenched and warm vocals. It's a well-known classic every self-respecting reggae fan should know and blows up any party, especially when tweaked like these two versions. They were originally produced by Studio One bossman Coxsone Dodd and have been covered by The Clash as well as sampled by The Fugees and hip hop MC KRS One. Review: Pennsylvanian based roots reggae band House Of Assembly dropped their last ever single in 1988 and this is it. The band was formed din Kingston, Jamaican and made up of Norman Bailey, Marc Campbell, Claver Campbell and Louis Putman, all of whom bonded over a love of dub and reggae before moving to the US. They made one album in the 80s became well known on the local scene. This single is one of their most well loved tunes with its stuttering rhythm and crashing hits as well as hints of 80s disco production. Review: Mikey Dread was a legend of reggae as a producer, DJ and singer, who gained international fame for working with The Clash on 'Bankrobber' and mixing dub versions for their Black Market Clash and Sandinista! albums. Through his Dread At The Controls label he released reams of incredible dub and roots reggae himself, with World War III surely one of the highlights. With the Roots Radics as the backing band and the likes of Earl Sixteen and Watty Burnett on backing vocals, the cast of characters is steeped in reggae's golden era, and sure enough the sound is as good as you'd expect. Review: The studio of Harry J's in Jamaica has turned out another pair of belters here. This limited edition and hand-numbered 7" features two killer 1969 tunes. The first is a bittersweet roots tune with a lead trumpet that does all the work. It's in conversation with the organ below and as they to and fro, expressing their pair, the bass rumbles and the percussion jangles. As well as that standout from Richard Ace, the flip-side has a super rare tune 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black & George Ferris. It's another earthy tune with lovestruck vocals.

Review: Jamaican rocksteady vocal group The Jamaicans linked with Tommy McCook & The Supersonics back in 1967 for this piece of rocksteady gold. The a-side of this reissue comes with the original Treasure Isle-version of the 1967 festival song. It's heavy, love struck, earthy and organic. The super B-side is a remixed version of the A-sides's backing track, but with the addition of some overdubbed percussion and syndrum parts as well as a sweet but uncredited toasting and DJ appearance by Jah Thomas. Both sound as hot and crucial now as they did all those many years ago.

This second volume of Ultra Super Dub on Now Again is a mega rare collection of work from Gardiner, a Jamaican bass player, bandleader, songwriter and singer of great repute. Review: Michael 'Palmer Dog' Palmer was one of the most notable dancehall vocalist of his era. He became quickly popular after appearing with plenty of sound systems and perfecting his unique improvisational techniques on the mic. That helped him standout in an overcrowded market and kept him popular with DJs who were turning reggae away from what it was becoming and turning it back to what it once was. Review: On its release last spring, reviewers hailed Horace Andy's Midnight Rockers as the honey-voiced reggae legend's best album in decades. It was certainly special, with the mighty Adrian Sherwood's production helping elevate the set to future classic levels. It was followed by the alternative, dub style 'Midnight Scorchers' album, which naturally featured Sherwood pushing the envelope far further than he did on the original set. Review: The good folks at Rock A Shaka have long been encouraging us to slow down and sink into a softer way of life, at least that's what we assume from their continually excellent output. This latest downtempo delight is a split 7" featuring Cassandra and Tyrone David. The former's 'Happiness Togetherness' opens up with heart-aching and soul-melting vocals unfolding in graceful fashion over the the lover's rock rhythms below. Tyrone David then offers 'Tell Me Why' which has more great vocals with a more indie twist. The drums remain cuddly and persuasive.

Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is well worth inspecting, but you might struggle to find one these days, and it'll be pricey if you do, because it's become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Review: Bernard Cumberbatch - presumably no relation to actor Benedict - and Garnett Cross are Aquizi, the dub duo fromed in the early 80s and Aiwa label mainstays. Their most notable 12" - aside from maybe 1981's 'Merry Christmas' was 'Kunte Kinte' earlier in the same year. It is a bit of a collector's fav that has more than held its value over the ensuing 40+ years. Driven by lazy dub swagger and carefree keys, it's a lovers rock outing peppered with toms and hits and plenty of echoing depths. Flip it over for version if you want something that will boggle the brain more with its endless mixing board effects.

Review: For some reason, the mighty dubs of Joe Gibbs and musical collaborator Errol Thompson have never been as widely celebrated as the pair's multitude of vocal recordings, many of which became colossal hits in their native Jamaica. This fine double-disc set from Doctor Bird aims to set the record straight, delivering a wealth of 'versions' and dub mixes recorded and released between 1975 and '78, all featuring Gibbs and Thompson's usual studio band, the Professionals. It's all top-tier dub - think skeletal arrangements, booming bass, effects-laden percussion and echoing vocal snippets - with 30 of the 48 tracks on show appearing on CD for the very first time. In other words, it should be a must-have for all dub enthusiasts.

He has had plenty of hits in his time and is now a regular on this label, Room In The Sky, with a couple of tunes dropping this month alone. Review: Two and a half years on from his death, Lee 'Scratch' Perry's "final album" - for the avoidance of doubt, it's the last one he recorded - arrives. Given his history of sonic innovation, it's striking that King Perry sees he late dub titan applying his dub aesthetic (with a little help from producer Daniel Boyle and a string of guest vocalists) to a wide variety of contemporary styles. Elements of synthwave, drum & bass, big beat and electronica are thrown into the mix, with his ten-ton basslines, dub effects, reggae riffs and freewheeling vocals rooting it in his extensive musical history. Review: Meets Kelly Ranks At Channel One is one of those classic dub albums that is very much deserving of this reissue on nice heavyweight wax. Michael Palmer is the man who did the meeting per the title and he is a leading Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist who has helped shaped the culture no end. This record fuses togther elements of both of those foundations sounds with nice lead horns and swaggering rhythms topped with carefree vocals full of soul but also carrying great messages.

Review: While not as celebrated as some of his Jamaican contemporaries, Winston Holness AKA Niney The Observer was a hugely successful record producer. This excellent two-disc set does an excellent job in rounding up the best of his output between 1973 and '75, a period where he enjoyed countless hits at home and over in the UK. There's naturally plenty of goodness to be found amongst the 49 tracks on show, with cuts featuring now well-known Jamaican scene stars - think Junior Delgado, Delroy Wilson, Big Youth, Max Romeo, Junior Byles, Horace Andy, U-Roy and ska survivor Tommy McCook - being joined by more dubbed-out 'versions' (credited to his studio band The Observers') and local hits by artists whose fame rarely spread beyond the Caribbean (Winston Wright, Hubert Lee, Earth & Stone). Review: Monyaka has a couple of limited edition, hand-stamped 7"s dropping courtesy of Japan Blues this month. This one is 'Questions Of Life', a forlorn and love-struck wedge of lovers rock with conversational horns doing plenty of great work up top. The earthy rhythms and loose, handgun drums are sprinkled with woodblock hits and yearning vocals from Monyaka who asks where he is going in plaintive fashion. Flip it over for a dubwise rework that slows things down and makes them even more heady and spaced out.

Review: US dub crew Park Heights has got a real gem on their hands here with this latest 7". It is a killer jam from the mid-1980s that was made at Aquarius Studio. The 'live digital' tune has never before been released which is a wrong that is rightly corrected here and is even more special as it has Errol Dunkley on the rhythm even though it is not his usual style. It is a heavy stepper with loopy drums and hits that echo off to infinity as he drops his loved-up vocals over the. It of course comes with a superb dub on the flip.

Review: Following his Original Mr Cool Ruler album being reissued back in summer by Lantern Rec, Octave Lab now gets in on the action by serving up his I Do Love You album from 1972. It's a delightful work of lovers' rock and roots magic that is centered around his impossibly pure and soulful vocals. They convey all manner of emotions from pain to joy over clean dubs and acoustic guitars. The hooks are catchy and their rhythms percussive, with joyous like 'Don't Stop' and more rueful vibes such as 'You're Eyes Are Dreaming' all sounding as good as ever.

Review: Jah Thomas's Shoulder Move dropped in 1983 and was one of some 200-plus released the veteran Jamaican producer and Midnight Rock label was involved with in a career that spanned from 1978 to the present day. He worked with legends like King Tubby, The Roots Radic Band, Scientist and plenty more but head up this one alone. His deadpan vocal style is rhythmic and compelling as he rides the stripped-back dub rhythms below through the nine superb cuts on this newly reissued record. It's pure reggae and it really hits the spot.

Review: At King Tubby's With The Roots Radics sounds a bit like the sort of text message a kid out too late might send her worried mum. It's also the name of this killer album which finds Barry Brown providing some super vocal work to killer rhythms initially laid down by the in house band Roots Radics and then twisted into psyched out stoner soundscapes by the one and only studio wizard The Scientist. He really gets deep here and EQs hard while masterfully dubbing Brown out of the picture.

Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.
