Quando Tu Dances (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FAR 041. Rel: 25 Nov 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Quando Tu Dances (Willie Graff edit) (8:29)
  2. C'est Une Bombe (Faze Action edit) (6:21)
  3. Les Vacances On S'eclete, On S'evade (6:33)
Review: "Quando Tu Dances" was a hit for Micky Milan back in 1982 when it came out on Salsoul, and it has that seminal label's brand of disco funk spilling out of every bar. Now Faze Action have drafted a strong serving of remixers to bring a few deft touches to some of Milan's biggest hits, leading in with Willie Graff and his tasteful edit of the title track that lets the original vibe shine through in all its sunny finery. Faze Action themselves take on "C'est Une Bombe" - another slick '80s jam with plenty of boogie licks to complement the warmth of the guitar and Latin percussion. Finally we get an untouched original, the more spaced out cosmic pop jam "Les Vacances On S'eclete, On S'evade".

  1. Synthasy (8:10)
  2. Nightingale (6:40)
  3. Vizzle (7:29)
Review: East End Dubs keep the pressure up with another peak time belter to feed into their rapidly swelling catalogue. "Synthasy" marries snaking, nervy piano lines to a chunky tech house backbone with a fierce forward momentum, while "Nightingale" weaves a little trance bombast into the formula without over-egging those lead synths. It's a fine art to achieve that balance, and they've nailed it. "Vizzle" takes things in a more playful direction with wobbly tones and a cheeky bassline catering for those naughty moments when everyone's getting loose and having a real good time.

  1. Honey Dijon - "Blue Sky" (7:50)
  2. Desert Sound Colony - "Where Are Ya?" (6:33)
  3. Danielle Temperilli - "Rattlesnake" (5:34)
Review: The latest compilation 12" from Dungeon Meat brings together a heavyweight cast for a trip into the seedy underbelly of tech house. Leading the charge is Honey Dijon, who's on tough and heavy-grooving form with the low-end pulsing pump of "Blue Sky". Desert Sound Colony shakes things up with a quirky, bumping sample juggler in "Where Are Ya?" - calling to mind the madcap antics of Jacob London but less goofy and more mean tempered. Danielle Temperilli takes cues from UK garage for the crooked 2-step freakery of "Rattlesnake" - a wild card deep cut for the heads to get quizzical to.

  1. Mebsouta (4:31)
  2. Al Eih (4:18)
  3. Rekka (bonus beats chant) (5:02)
Review: These days we're used to obscure dance records from around the world getting the reissue treatment. Even so, this previously CD-only Egyptian release from 1991 is a particularly deep pick. Happily, it's well worth the reissue treatment, particularly the breezy, colourful and deliciously groovy opener "Mabsouta", a bubbly and breathy synth-pop cover of Suzanne Vega classic "Tom's Diner" that wraps Simone's Egyptian vocals and sparkling pianos around a stunning synth bassline. You'll find more summery, almost Balearic synth-pop on the flip via the cheeky Hammond organ riffs, glistening guitars and dewy-eyed chords of "Al Eih". To round things off in style, Castro-Moore offers up a brilliant "Bonus Beats Chant" version of sparse but heavy drum machine and synthesizer jam "Rekka".

  2. Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle) (8:44)
Review: After they last shared wax on Mosaic back in 2017, UK dub techno veteran Steve O'Sullivan and prolific minimal house rising star Frazer Campbell link up once again for the sleek and sophisticated sounds of "Straight To The Source". It's a shuffling, funky workout with understated b-lines to suck you in and subtle splashes of reverb to shape out a heady atmosphere. "Hypnotonic (West Side Shuffle)" on the flip has a more bubbling, psychedelic quality to it, without losing that cool Mosaic veneer that makes these joints so workable in so many different situations.

Review: After spending so much of their career to date releasing on Jazzman, it's interesting to see The Greg Foat Group make their way over to Athens Of The North for this cool and deadly new record. "The Dreaming Jewels" keeps the grooves simmering low down - all the sweeter to sink into. Just lock in on "Eric's Breakdown" and ask yourself if the track needs any more than that sweet conga flex. "The Door Into Summer" is a beautifully mellow jam too, all sultry Rhodes and sax to signal the start of lazy days. There are more tender moments and some breezier affairs, but the vibe remains chilled throughout this wonderful set from an accomplished band.

Review: Psychemagik teased their debut album earlier this year with the smooth crossover single "We Can Be One", which opens up this hotly anticipated long player from the widely adored duo. There's plenty of pop leanings to this record, but of course shot through with the dreamy lilt of psychedelia and deep-digging Balearic charm that has defined Psychemagik from the beginning. At times it gets more bombastic, as on "Ghost Particle" with Liam Magill, and there's a cheeky party track or two (just check "Above The Clouds"), but the main focus here is on rich songwriting with a heavy emphasis on warm synth tones. Existing Psychemagik fans will be happy, but this record should equally land them a new legion of admirers as they take another step forward in their evolution.

Review: Canada's Nick Holder is one of those understated heroes of deep house - his career runs far and wide, and can be a bit daunting to dig into retrospectively. That makes a release like this immensely useful, picking out a few absolute gems and giving them a fresh airing. First up is "Love Is Blind" from 1999, a beautiful hazy, shuffling cut for the mellowest moments. "Blackman" is from the year before - a potent message wrapped up in a soulful groove. The record rides out with "She Likes It (Remix)", which works around a nagging drum break to make for a powerful club tool.

Review: Relentlessly prolific Boris Bunnik brings his electro-focused Versalife alias to 20/20 Vision, a label which has been excelling at a renewed focus on the sounds of electro in recent years. The 808 beats are crisp and snapping, like they should in proper electro, but the synths shape out the atmosphere in brooding, dystopian strokes shot through with a certain mournful quality. It makes for engrossing, emotionally charged material perfect for the dancefloor as much as headphone reveries - just flip to the gorgeous "Aegis" and feel yourself drift away to somewhere mystical in the far reaches of the future.

Review: As good as his experimental and conceptual work is, it's easy to forget that Matthew Herbert was once one of deep house's most distinctive producers. If you need a reminder, we'd suggest getting your ears around this must-have reissue of one of the producer's EPs from 1998. Opener "I Hadn't Known (I Only Heard)" is an early collaboration with vocalist Dani Siciliano full of fuzz-fuelled deep house/tech-house grooves and drowsy, ambient style pads. "We All Need Love" adds a touch of garage-influenced bump to Herbert's heady deep house template, while "So Now" is a delightfully wonky and opaque affair full of mutilated bass guitar samples and more dreamy Siciliano vocals. "Got To Sing", a thrillingly bass-heavy chunk of post US garage goodness, is also superb.

Finally, the Detroit hero is back with a splash on his regular home of Mahogani Music with a stunning follow-up that brings out the best of his many musical threads. There's Cubano style vibes on "Back In The Old Times" and hand-clapping gospel tinted house grooves on "Mighty Tribe", sweet and sexy downtempo jams like "I'll Wait 4 U" and mad heavy R&B beatdowns like "What's Ur Name Again" - that's just the first four tracks and when they hit like this, you know the rest of the record's just as strong and just as varied.

Review: Whether making musically rich deep hazy or hazy, pitched-down beatdown jams, Alton Miller rarely gets it wrong - as is proved by the impressive number of labels queuing up to sign singles from the veteran Detroit producer. The latest is Noble Square, a fine imprint run by Chicagoan heavyweight Ricardo Miranda. Even by Miller's standards, "When The Morning Comes" is extra-special, featuring as it does distinctive vocals from Amp Fiddler and extra percussion programming by Kyle Hall. The trio's slick, smooth and groovy original version comes accompanied by a similarly tasty instrumental mix and a wonderfully woozy and jazzy remix by Fiddler and Hall that's arguably even better than the inspired A-side mix.

Review: In recent years, David Sumner's music as Function has tended towards the dark, lo-fi, industrial and minimal. "Existenz", his first solo album in six years, is an altogether more melodious, thoughtful and ear-catching affair. Of course, there are still some suitably mangled, mind-altering club cuts on show - see the buzzing, shape-shifting heaviness of "Ertrinken", the spaced-out hypnotism of "Kurzstrecke" and the Berghain-ready "Vampire" - but these largely play second fiddle to more playful and tuneful expressions of electro, Detroit style techno, dreamy fusions of deep house and early UK style tech-house, and ambient cuts so lovely you'll want to bathe in them. He even makes room for a couple of vocal collaborations with Robert Owens. It all adds up to a stunning set that's undoubtedly one of the most instantly arresting techno albums of the year.

Review: Belarus' Sergey Abramov, aka Funkyjaws, revives his Manwoman alias to produce a classy EP of deep house that speaks to his experience in the studio. "Pub Which Plays A Disco" is a catchy, funked-up affair that still manages to keep things cool and restrained at the same time. The Roland Nights mix of "It's Just" takes a slightly more uptempo approach without losing the overall deep vibe, while another of Abramov's original, "Love Song", locks into a raw, live feeling and rolls with it. There's also a track from Eddie Matos on this 12", remixed by Rune Lindbaek and Frisvold and turned into a shimmering, disco-licked immersion heater.

Review: The always excellent Be With turn their attention to Samuel Jonathon Johnson and his fantastic 1978 album "My Music", which was the only full length he put out. The smooth vibe you get from the cover art alone says a lot about the music the man recorded: steamy, downtempo soul, romantic disco and lots of strong laden gems to warm you and a loved one through. The well known "What The World Needs Now Is Love" is a slow motion soul soother, while "Sweet Love" is pure positivity and "You" brings gorgeous orchestral disco funk fusions that brim with vitality. His own libidinous spoken word vocals add loveable sleaze to "Just Us" and makes for one of many highlights.

Review: Music From Memory's latest must-check reissue is a fresh pressing of an obscure 1985 album by Musica Esporadica, a six-piece collective whose members included regular label contributor Suso Saiz. It's a hugely atmospheric affair from start to finish, with bubbly drum machine grooves and Afro-influenced hand percussion rhythms being overlaid with languid synthesizer melodies, atmospheric chords, distant guitar sounds and aural textures so warming you could probably use them as a duvet. There are naturally nods towards ambient, new age and Steve Reich style minimalism (see "I Forgot The Shirts") as well as the occasional operatic vocals and the most Balearic of sounds: fretless bass.

Purple Disco Machine struck gold with "Dished (Male Stripper)" not least thanks to that nagging synth hook, and now there's a full-fat vinyl release bolstered by some essential remixes. The first is from Illyus & Barrientos, who tastefully dub the track out without losing that big room sparkle. Then Tuff City Kids inject a little festival fever into the track with some zesty leads they wield so well. The B-side packs a full eight-minute extended version of the original for those who just want the hit to last even longer.

Two more unreleased gems here, leading in with the Rick James on a shoestring nastiness of "Freak Call" - it's loose and unpolished, but there's so much energy locked up in this jam, it's like it made itself get discovered all this time after it was recorded. "I Want You Back" is the consummate sensitive B side - a sweet soul number for a slow dance after all the freaky business is done with.

Velez has Latin American roots, and he has performed since the late 60s in New York, but his interest in percussion spans the globe and all kinds of hand drums. His respected techniques have been snapped up by collaborators like John Cage and Steve Reich, not least thanks to the advanced polyrhythmic modes he operates in. Don't be fooled though - this isn't just a drum record. Accompanying musicians shape out the hypnotic percussion in a variety of transcendental moods that make this an invigorating listen start to finish.

He launches the Automatism label in a flurry of cosmic disco finery with "Ursa Minor", a synth-rich escapade that could make Cerrone feel a little giddy on its course to the stars. "Exotic Matter" slows things right down and ramps up the rock drums to create a noirish soundtrack vibe. "Exquisite Corpse (Zero Gravity Mix)" changes tact once more with some plaintive piano tinkering over subtle arpeggios, and "Running To Paradise" slides down into a smooth Balearic groove that rounds out this wonderfully diverse EP.

Searing acid lights up the cantering drums of opener "Selected" and that continues on "Form" with its undulating lines and relentless drums. Luckily the man has some serious knowledge on deep cuts and the right way to work them, so that's what you get in full force on this excellent 12". "Space Love" is a heavy instrumental workout with a surging rhythm section and some utterly deadly keys nimbly flexing over the top of the jam. "Love Disco" is a big and bold vocal, "Inside Lookin In" is a raunchy stomper and "Waiting On Love" takes things in a jazz funk direction. Whichever track tickles your fancy at any given time, these are all classily edited party favours for peak time hours.

Review: After some time away the big man Levon comes down from on high with hands stretched aloft, the bearer of big tunes. Gone are the murky basement incantations of old - on this new album Vincent has not so much thrown open the curtains as carved a massive hole in the ceiling to let the sunlight in. Just feel the vitamin D raining down from that searing opening track, "Kiss Marry Kill". There are big Beefa-ready moments such as the DX7 bassline hook of "Flowers For Algernon", hymnal epics to part the seas like "The Vampire Lestat" and eye-swelling heart swoons for the sun down sensitive souls ("She Likes To Wave At Passing Boats"). On this record, Vincent is here for everyone, and we're so here for that.

As such, the Z Records boss allow himself a little victory lap and looks back at some of his many highlights on this two disc collection, which contains four exclusive new remixes of disco classics from Double Exposure, The O'Jays, Tamiko Jones and Delia Renee. Next to those new gems are Joey's reworks of disco standards like CeCe Peniston, Horse Meat Disco and Sunkids and some of his own original new productions under the aliases of Mistura, Doug Willis and Lakeshore Commission.

Review: Here's a heavyweight package for jazz-loving tech heads to get inspired by. Billy Cobham, surely one of the greatest jazz fusion drummers of all time, gives his excellent Drum N' Voice series over to some scene-leading electronic innovators to remix, rework or simply pay untold respect to. You can sense Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer were in full reverential mode when they delivered their stunning, viscerally live version of "Stratus". Lexx brings the smooth funk to "Sensations", MCDE drops some feel-good vibes on "Shining Sun", and Khidja gets nicely wigged-out over "Psychologic". What's not to love about a fusion project like this one?

Review: Berlin's Matasuna label welcomes a debut appearance from Afrobeat-flavoured outfit Heroes Of Limbo. We're not certain on where this band originally hail from, but they've got the vibe down perfectly on this smoking hot 7". "Madchester Woman" skits and scatters with loose in-the-room drums, a sassy brass section and sweet high life guitar licks. "White Noise" brings Clair Fallows on board for a strong vocal turn that turns the temperature up. This is soul-stirring Afrobeat in the mould of the originators, executed with respectful accuracy and played with passion.

Review: Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" is one of Jamaica's most famous songs. It has a rich history, too, that was the inspiration for Althea and Donna's 1997 smash "Uptown Top Ranking" and here it gets a loud-cut 12" pressing that allows it to soar. It's a track full of longing, with dusty keys and a natty bassline finished off with gorgeous vocals. The flipside houses the Soul Vendors' "Just A Bit Of Soul" featuring Jackie Mittoo. It's a more upbeat ditty with bumpier drums and jazz flecked keys to get you grooving.

Review: Constant Black make it clear they're committed to the tradition of minimal tech house with this mean ol' monster from Bodeler & Saenz. "Blumpted" has some necessary rise and falls throughout its run time, but it's really about that unrelenting, unapologetic deep and heavy beatdown. The stuff marathon set dreams are made of. "Panash" has plenty of bump of its own, with a little more tweaking going on in the synth department, while "Hobbs" widens things out with a few more melodic components and some flecks of sound design trickery in the mix.

Review: With the combination of band name and album title this one's always going to be a bit of a tearjerker, packed with self-reflection and self-loathing. No regrets, though, as Greg Gonzalez muses on sensuality, the loss of those we care about, the loss of self to another and the endless yearning of the human heart. Shades of Lord Huron and a wealth of gloomy shoegazers can be felt, but even though "Cry" represents a next step for Cigarettes After Sex - edging into more minimalistic territories - it's still immediately identifiable as this band, and so won't fail to instantly resonate with avid fans. Packed with an exquisite, opiate balladry at once heartfelt and heartbroken, it's hard to tell whether this is exactly what you need to hear when living through your blue period or precisely what you shouldn't listen to. Either way, it's quiet impact is immense.

Review: As the title sneakily suggests, the latest volume in DJ Soopasoul's essential "Soopastole Edits" series sees the prolific re-editor and mash-up merchant take his scalpel to all time disco classic "We Are Family". We could be wrong, but it sounds like it was created using the multi-track parts, focusing as it does for much of the duration on a stripped-back, DJ-friendly groove, selected vocal snippets and delay-laden musical elements not always audible on the original version. Over on the flipside "Cosmo On The Groove" version, he takes a slightly different approach, adding a classic old school hip-hop acappella to an expertly cut-up version of the track that utilizes a little more of the sing-along chorus.

Review: Where do you start with this epic collection? Arthur Russell should be no stranger to any music boffin, having been a tour de force on the New York underground during the 1970s and 80s. A maestro of disco, formative-era dance music, anything remotely avant-garde, despite having worked on some of the most iconic releases of the day, he only produced three albums before passing before time. "Iowa Dream" is what was left behind, or at least to some extent. Archived and - for years - never earmarked for release, thanks to the tireless efforts of composer Peter Broderick, this collection of demos, home recordings, and lost songs has been restored, edited and mixed, then carefully placed on this lovingly-conceived compilation. The result is a must-buy for fans and newcomers alike and will only serve to cement Russell's place in the pantheons.

Review: Ever since he first made an impact earlier in the decade, Bosq has proved adept at joining the dots between contemporary club culture and the heady heaviness of vintage African and South American dancefloor styles. He's also rather good at crafting authentic Latin dancefloor workouts, too, as this tidy seven-inch single proves. Check first "Rumbero", featuring the confident vocals of Nidia Gongora, a horn-happy affair that effortlessly joins the dots between rhumba, cumbia and psychedelic punk. His electronic influences come to the fore on flipside "Corazon (Camilo Tumbao)", a contemporary take on the Cumbia sound rich in fuzzy analogue bass, jaunty organs, dub-wise noises and Colombian style male vocals.

First up is one of Cameroon's funkiest exports, Pasteur Lappe, whose cosmically charged 1979 Disques Esperance release "Na Real Sekele Fo Ya" gets a cheeky re-jig from Shan. Flip for a powerful soul twist from Glowing Palms as they get busy on the bassline and middle eight section of another Disques Esprance artist Jo Bisso. Finally, Shan closes the show with another floor-focused edit, this time of Charly Kingson's "Manyaka". Soulful, strident and jacked up by Shan's new arrangement, this will have your dancefloor swooning from the off.

  1. Top Billin (2:53)

Review: Hip-hop diggers will happily tell you that "Top Billin" was one of the tightest, heaviest and most stripped-back rap jams to emerge from New York in the mid 1980s. Here the 1987 hip-hop club classic is given the reissue treatment by fresh label Know How, marking the cut's first appearance on "45" for 32 years. The A-side vocal version - the most famous of the two takes - is a great example of the dancefloor power of stripped-back hip-hop, with the completed cut being little more than chunky drum machine beats and on-point raps rich in call-and-response sections and crowd-pleasing slogans. The harder to find flipside instrumental lays this bare, peppering the duo's beat with select snippets of reverb-laden chants.

Review: For the best part of 17 years, Theo Parrish's legendary re-edit of Made In USA's "Never Gonna Let You Go" was available only to those willing to pay serious sums for a copy of his first "Ugly Edits" release. Thankfully De-Lite has done the admirable thing and made it available to all via this essential new edition of the 1977 jam. It allows those who've never heard Made In USA's heartfelt and surprisingly laidback original to compare the two versions, which only highlights the brilliance of Parrish's re-edit. His ten-minute take speeds up the track, adding choppy edits effects to increase energy before rolling into the most righteous and celebratory bits of the original version. In our opinion, it's one of the greatest re-edits of all time.

A coming together of two giants is always going to be worth hearing and so this second Peel Session recording proves. One of only two radio broadcasts Richard D.
