Review: Passing fashions for jerky post-punk and effervescent dance-pop have elevated this confusingly monikered outfit to hot topic status over the years, but !!! have maintained their own identity throughout. Tapping into a lineage of New York party music that touches on Ze records and Studio 54 whilst also embuing their sound with a punk rock vim and vigour straight from CBGBs, 'Shake The Shudder' might be the most timeless collection of suss, sway and swagger these freaks have put together in their 21 (!) years of filling dancefloors. Review: 2019's Wallop was the last album we heard from !!! so fans will be delighted to check out this new full length, Let It Be Blue. The first single from it, 'Storm Around the World,' features Sink Ya Teeth's Maria Uzor and the band explained it was "originally an acid workout about parents who leave on tour," became much more. Expect the album to be a diverse affair packed with dance floor moments but also plenty of more spare sounds that allow the world play to shine through. Fittingly, this one - the band's ninth album - comes pressed on nice blue wax.

Review: New York combo !!! has always been a hard-to-pigeonhole proposition, with their albums frequently joining the dots between punk-funk, no-wave disco, indie-pop, and the saucer-eyed energy of more purist dance music. As a result, there's a vibrancy and freshness to each new record they release, and Let it Be Blue - their first album for three years - is no exception. Freewheeling and highly entertaining, its' many highlights include the funky, acid-flecked, spoken-word sporting jangle of 'Storm Around The World', the alien-sounding synth-pop surge of 'Here's What I Need To Know', the sub-heavy electro stylishness of 'Panama Canal' and the flash-fried funk of 'Man on the Moon', a brilliantly thrilling R.E.M cover that sounds like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers jamming with Prince.

Review: Eight albums in and !!! are still as hard to define than the band's name is difficult to say. They've always managed to resonate with the sound and zeitgeist of the year in which they release, and "Wallop" doesn't differ from that modus. An amalgamation of tones at once uptempo and hedonistic yet brutally damaged, it's an electronic album built in the way the genres it pays homage to originally were - blueprint free. We've got dance-rock crossovers, straight up techno (albeit aimed squarely at non-die-hard-heads) and bouncing broken funk-house hybrids, so what more do you want? "Couldn't Have Known" nods to classic Basement Jaxx. "Domino" takes us down an IDM wormhole, where we meet the aptly titled "Ur Paranoid" and its pulsating intensity. Simultaneously referencing Primal Scream, trip hop, Madchester, whatever that track that set the club off last night was while sounding like none of the above, it's archetypal !!! business.

Love In Motion (Vanzetti & Sacco edit) (6:45)
Review: For the latest missive on their reissue-focused Attic Salt Discs imprint, Dusty-fingered duo Colin Volvert and Otto Kraanen have snapped up the rights to a sought-after 1984 cut from Belgian new wave band 1000 Ohm. You'll find their original vocal and instrumental versions on the A-side, with both sounding like a delightful cross between bubbly Italo-disco, Bobby 'O' style Hi-NRG and the imperial synth-pop of the Pet Shop Boys. Arguably even better than both original mixes is Vanzetti and Sacco's more dancefloor-focused flipside edit. While this does make use of 1000 Ohm's Heaven 17/ABC style vocals and cheery melodies, there's far more focus on the druggy arpeggio groove and chunky drum machine beats.

Review: 1000 Ohm is a Belgian synth-pop/new wave duo that formed in 1981; the following year, their debut single 'A.G.N.E.S.' became a local hit, thanks to its prominent drum lines and a loyalty to the fun-loving melodic monotony endemic to the genre at the time. But despite their initial success, their second single 'Love In Motion' didn't come until 1984 on Clip Records; this disco cheerer-upper is as powerful and bold as it is relaxing and beach-worthy, straddling two distinct emotions through two distinct call-and-response lines. The B-side features an instrumental version of the same track, as well as a remix by the faux-anarchist duo Vanzetti & Sacco.

Review: The always cultured Emotional Rescue kicks of the first of what will be a series of reissue sou the music of young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel. He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Hot Tonight (part II) (4:06)
Review: Here's a nod to late 70s disco, funk and boogie featuring some of the best NYC musicians to grace the scene in the past 20 years, and recorded at Soul Fire Studios featuring over two dozen musicians. Members of El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap- Kings, Antibalas and more are featured on 10th Street's '(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight' which is a classic and timeless disco funk affair featuring an absolutely sublime string section. Over on the flip, the slower and more emotive 'Hot Tonight' (part II) makes for feelgood vibes on the dancefloor later in the night, featuring sensual vocals to boot.

Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

Review: 10th Street is one of those devotional funk projects which sounds like it would wholly pass for the real deal, despite being made in recent times by a crack team of NYC musicians from bands including El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap-Kings and Antibalas. Following Mighty Eye's release of the group's self-titled debut album in 2022 comes this single, which tasks Tom Noble with whipping up a remix of 'E.A.R.L.'s Theme'. Whether you plump for the juiced up Noble remix or the sizzling groove of the original, you have the chance to cop some genuine dancefloor dynamite right here.

N'Gwode Disco Edit
Review: Hailing from Barcelona, the 12Tree crew fire up their own in-house label Hot Piroski with a sterling opening round that's already garnering support from the likes of Pete Herbert, Crazy P, Psychemagik and more. The original track on the A side, "Sugamomma," is a well-rounded, full-fat dancefloor burner that should sit comfortably with fans of Hot Natured et al, given an extra boost with a sample of a young soul legend in the making. On the flip, Afrobeat classic N'Gwode by Aleke Kanonu gets a respectful edit that injects just the right amount of extra groove without diluting the loose, infectious soul of the original.

Swamp Love (5:02)
Review: Hot Piroski is a newly minted label that promises to serve up "a boisterous mix of space disco, deep funk edits and Balearic beats" all commandeered by Barcelona producer 12Tree. Things get off to a sultry start with the cosy undulations of "Lazers", which sports a housey strut to carry its wistful melodic tones. "Gamma Ray" is a spicier affair with rugged bass that firmly plants the tune in the dirty disco department. "Swamp Love" has more of a classic edit feel with its dusty, looped up samples and choppy edits, but it's equally a delightfully laid back groover to suit a whole plethora of situations.

Review: Robin Twelftree has been busy over the past year bringing back his particular take on peak time house with a disco edge. Prolific in the late 90s and early 00s, his 12Tree project went on an extended hiatus but now finds a new outlet with the Hot Piroski label. "In The Sun" is a sassy uptempo workout with funk and flamboyance to match the tougher edges of the track. "Magic Dust" slows things down to a supremely mellow strut, with heavy lashings of soul blissed out over the top of the drums. "Guitar Solaar" stays in the downtempo zone with a subtle cosmic lilt and gorgeous vocals unfurling over loose and lazy breaks.

Church (Darkstarr Diskotek dub)
Review: Given the clubby, fun nature of their music, it's not surprising 2 Bears have become the most popular off shoot of the Hot Chip phenomenon. Joe Goddard's project with fellow larger than life scene stalwart Raf Daddy see their Southern Fried classic "Church" get the Darkstarr treatment. It's an all round classy release - with the typically on point production from DJ Cosmo and Ashley Beedle across the Rub and Dub versions more than matched by the presentation. This 10 inch has hand silk screen printed artwork and label courtesy of artist James Morrison and represents the final instalment in Bitches Brew series of highly limited ten inches. Musically our favourite is the Rub, simply because the live sounding deep bump is the perfect backing for the rising crescendo of chorus harmonies.

Straight Forward Side Steps (4:36)
Review: The band 2000 Black, who include 4Hero icon Dego among their number, are masters of the broken beat scene, leaders amongst men who whether working alone or with others are always in top form. This two track outing kicks off with 'Soursop & Mango', a bristling, bustling mix of raw drums and bursts of cosmic synth energy that radiates soul, all with neat guitar riffs stitched into the mix. 'Straight Forward Side Steps' is a dusty jam with lovely scruffy claps and much more well defined synth lines adding colour and soul.

Tape (12' edit)
Tape (Burnski remix)
Tape (Dirt Crew dub mix)
Review: The 2020 Soundsystem boys return with an even more DJ friendly edit of the funky electronic disco, Greg Wilson inspired track "Tape". "Tape" is taken from 2020 Soundsystem's debut album "No Order", which was released earlier this year to 5 star reviews across the board. The guys worked on their original sound, influenced by the classic 80s electrofunk sets of the brilliant Greg Wilson, to give the track an extra dancefloor injection. Our first remixer Burnski, a fresh, new talent who has already made his mark through releases on Infant Records, Morris Audio and Trapez. He takes things deeper with his trademark clicky style, but still keeping the funk stuck in the grooves. Dirt Crew have been cleaning up with their productions on prestigious labels such as Moodmusic, Gomma, Breastfed, Soma, Crosstown Rebels and now 2020 Vision. Dirt Crew deliver two killer mixes in their trademark solid, hypnotic, electronic house style. The dub keeps things stripped down and heads down, whilst the main mix, which is only available digitally, goes straight for the jugular with a Teutonic rave sound.
