Review: Disco-pop outfit Say She She are having a massive breakout year in 2023 and after a big gig at Glastonbury it continues with this, the arrival of their second album, Silver, which comes via Karma Chief Records. The female-fronted group bring to mind the magic of the golden era of disco - namely the Studio 54 sound - here with 16 tunes packed with mesmerising harmonies and operatic hooks. It's elegant and lavish and comes with plenty of vital perspective from the group's experiences as modern femmes, such as an urgent call to action to support the protection of women's rights and preserving the right to birth control.

Review: Mysterious South Korean singer Ji Sook once made a detour under the pseudonym Akiko Mizuhara, and under the name, she delivered the 'Love Message', a short love letter comprising K-pop and disco. Featuring members of Malaia, it's a covers album in its entirety; a slew of Western standards follow on from an instrumental bossa nova medley on the album's latter half, including versions of 'The Girl From Ipanema' and Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On'.

Review: When DFA Records first released 'Compilation #2' back in 2004, the label was arguably at the peak of its powers, consistently delivering killer cuts that blurred the boundaries between post-punk, early '80s NYC no wave, and more traditional forms of U.S dance music. It remains a brilliant snapshot of James Murphy's label (and, to a lesser degree, NYC's alternative punk-dance scene of the period), as this surprise first vinyl edition proves. Slimmed down to 18 tracks, all of which are presented in full length form (the original CD edition was mixed), and stretched across four weighty slabs of wax, it contains countless highlights from LCD Soundsystem, The Juan MacLean, Black Dice and the Rapture, as well as a handful of classic DFA remixes and a banger from original punk-funk heroes Liquid Liquid.

Review: Sharon Redd was at the heart of the Prelude sound at a time when they were on top of the world and dropping endless amounts of electronic disco heat. Her own standout hits include 'Beat The Street' which features here and lends its name to a collection of her many other still fresh tunes. Darryl Payne's production was behind some of these and this reissue comes on gatefold translucent blue and pink swirl vinyl with a special megamix mash-up of the highlights as the final tune.

Review: Modern Talking, the German duo of Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders had plenty of big disco hits back in the 80s and now much of their catalogue is being revisited and reissued. Next up is Alone from 1999 which was their eighth studio album and one that features the big standout hits 'You Are Not Alone' and 'Sexy, Sexy Lover.' The album was a chart success in Germany at the time and sold over half a million units so was eventually certified platinum by the Bundesverband Musikindustrie. It is full of camp and Euro-centric disco sounds with old school synths front and centre and plenty of fun vocal hooks.

Review: All-female disco and soul band Say She She finally unveil their long-awaited debut album here. 'Prism' is the sort of album that transports you to another world with its lush melodies and dreamy soundscapes. Made up of Piya Malik (who is part of El Michels Affair), as well as Nya Parker Brown and Sabrina Cunningham, the band are perfect harmonisers who here nod to the sound of the late 70s. Their scoring vocals and multi-instrumentalist grooves lift you off your feet across a series of tunes that have been, on the whole, self-released. What an achievement it is too.

Review: Acclaimed DJ, singer, remixer and songwriter DJ KAWASAKI shows another side to himself on this new double album for his own label. On it, he serves up instrumental tracks inspired by Afro, jazz, and funk. Every single sound you hear is played live and guests include artists like Sauce81, who you will know from labels like Eglo, and jazz vocalist Ayana. A host of musicians have helped to realise this most lively and upbeat album including Kyoto Jazz Sextet, Kenichi Ikeda of ROOT SOUL and Venue Vincent, Hiderow Nishioka of CENTRAL. It is a real triumph that comes 11 years after his equally acclaimed Paradise album from 2010.

Review: AOR soft rock titan Tatsuro Yamashita is often referred to as the king of city pop for good reason. Both as a solo artist and writing and producing for his wife Mariya Takeuchi, he contributed greatly to Japan's music culture in the 1980s, earning him number six in HMV Japan's Top 100 Japanese Artists rundown. Softly is his fourteenth studio album, marking 11 years since Yamashita's last outing. Alongside new tracks 'Hikari to Kimi e no Requiem' and 'Cheer Up! The Summer' there are pieces which were previously used in advertising such as 'Lehua, My Love' and 'Shining From The Inside'. Japanese city pop aficionados (of which we know there are many) take note!

Review: Dabeull, the current scene's utmost favourite 'danceable funk' purveyor, is back with bang in the form of an all-analog production, full-length LP. Analog Love enlists the help of a string of vocalists and production affiliates - including Holybrune, Dezzy Hollow, Reva DeVito, Rude Jude, and Jordan Lee - to amount to a glitzing, golden, effulgent nighttime set of funk intuits. From the lead single 'Body Heat' to the closing confabulations of 'Fabulous Kisses', every piece here is a latent hit, dripping in neon liquid and well-rounded, sawn-off textures, the latter of which was notably achieved by using the mixing console historically used for Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' at the mixing stage.

Review: U.S label Light In The Attic has previously served up compilations exploring various Japanese takes on Western music, most notably folk, rock, ambient and new age. Here they switch tack, curating a brilliant double-album set that showcases the best Japanese synth-pop, AOR and boogie recorded between 1976 and '86. The quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, from the blue-eyed-soul breeze of Taeko Ohnuki's "Kusuri Wo Takusan" and the Chaz Jankel-meets-Thompson Twins style throb of Haruomi Hosono's "Sports Men", to the talkbox-sporting late night AOR-pop flex's Hiroshi Satoh's "Say Goodbye" and the glistening, Latin-influenced jazz-funk brilliance of Masayoshi Takanaka's steel pan-sporting "Bamboo Vender".

Review: Japan's Hiroshi Sato is well known to record obsessives who value his ability to craft pure musical nostalgia for a place you haven't even been to, He has turnabout tens of essential records, many of which are in the process of being reissued right now. His masterful jazz-funk classic Orient is one of his best known works from 1979 but All Of Me is another classic. It came much later in 1995 and is a killer pop record with glistening synths, infectious drum programming and contributions from a number of guests.

Review: U.S label Light In The Attic has hit gold with this hugely popular series. It has done three volumes by now but here comes a welcome reissue of the first from a few years ago. After compilations exploring various Japanese takes on Western music, most notably folk, rock, ambient and new age they switched tack, curating a brilliant double-album set that showcases the best Japanese synth-pop, AOR and boogie recorded between 1976 and '86. Review: The man who invented the extended 12" remix by cutting up reel to reel tapes and inserting new sections before stitching them back together is John Morales. The legendary producer now returns to BBE Music to celebrate the life and work of Teena Marie, a soul and R&B legend whose best moments make up this fantastic double album Love Songs & Funky Beats, which just about says it all. Morales mixed most of Marie's original works so knows the material inside out and back to front and is therefore the perfect person to rework, extend and subtly update it all with his own distinctive style.

Review: Anyone lucky enough to have caught James Murphy and his entourage of highly talented musical friends live will attest that it's here LCD Soundsystem truly excel. And whilst this London Sessions album recorded in the aftermath of such a performance at last year's Glastonbury Festival does not replicate such an elation filled experience, the chance to hear some of the band's best tracks recorded live makes this worth investigating. It's basically a showcase for how tight a group of musicians Gavin Russom, Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang are, most notably on "Get Innocuous" where Russom really goes to town on the synths and "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" which gets embellished with a liberal dose of tightness, tautness and spikiness. The band has such an all encompassing back catalogue that you could spend all day dissecting which tracks they should have included here, and it's a mark of the aforementioned tightness that even the somewhat risible "Drunk Girls" sounds markedly improved here.

Review: It may have taken longer than some anticipated, but Roisin Murphy is finally getting the plaudits she serves as one of the UK's finest vocalists and most inventive artists. It's taken time but finally the accolades are coming along with the of packed-out venues, dynamic live shows, and superb new albums. Hit Parade is a brand-new record made not with regular producer Crooked Man, but the leftfield Pampa Records boss DJ Koze. Musically, it's a genre-straddling, style-bending affair whose strong songs - rich in sing-along choruses, thoughtful lyrics and musical hooks aplenty - are presented in vivid colour (with plenty of sparkling organic instrumentation). This is the deluxe version of a truly deluxe album.

Review: Soul Jazz Records' Boombox series is back with another crucial instalment, this time focussing on the early days of hip-hop, electro and disco rap. These multi-cultural scenes have their roots in community centres, block parties and street jams that were appearing back in the Bronx. It's another fine and fulsome collection across six sides of vinyl and features some of the many innovative names from between 1979 and 1983. All of them are rare, classic and obscure tracks that come with stunning photography from Sophie Bramly who got rare access to document the early days of this scene in New York.
