Review: There are very few albums across any genre that stand the test of time better than 93 'Til Infinity, the classic debut record from the Hieroglyphics Crew's very own Souls Of Mischief. In an era where gangsta rap and g-funk dominated the West Coast rap scene, Souls broke ground on a completely unique and thoroughly West Coast tip. While the Dres and the Snoop Doggs were garnering much of the mainstream attention of the day, Souls were quietly forging a charismatic, critically acclaimed and cohesively shaped record that when categorised, sounded much closer to a tribe called quest than N.W.A.. The resulting sound of their debut is characteristic of the distinct style explored by the collective, including a rhyme scheme based on internal rhyme and beats centered around a live bass and obscure jazz and funk samples.

Coinciding with a new, forthcoming biopic about his life - American Dream: The 21 Savage Story - this is probably set to be the rapper's most forthcoming and acclaimed album to date. Having shouldered a fraught early life prior to his rise to stardom in Atlanta (Savage, real name Sheyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was born in Plaistow, London, to parents of British nationality and Caribbean heritage), Savage's earliest days are a hot topic when it comes to the theme of shaken personal identity and the double consciousness of immigration, a topic not commonly explored in contemporary hip-hop (it should be). Already lauded as the project through which Savage divulges all, this album serves as a birds-eye view of his history and a defiant rejoinder to the American ICE's misguidedly loaded statement, 'this whole public persona is false'.

Review: We all know that The Strokes' initial three album run of Is This Is It, Room On Fire and First Impressions Of Earth is the high watermark for their entire back catalogue. But that isn't to detract from their more latter day output, with 2011's Angles amassing a sincere cult following in the years since. Boasting one of their biggest singles to date, 'Under Cover Of Darkness', while showcasing the member's desire to begin toying with the sonic expectations from a band so tightly bound to their garage rock revival roots; deep cuts such as the watery synth-laden opener 'Machu Picchu', would take full advantage of their foray into MIDI electronics, subtly revitalising their formula in a manner many have only just begun to learn to appreciate in earnest.

Review: National Album Day 2023 throws up another treasure here with Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque album from 1991. The Scottish alt-rockers were known for their power pop and noise-pop sounds and this second album saw them crossover to have some genuine success in America. The record is best known for 'Star Sign' which reached number four on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart while 'What You Do to Me' and 'The Concept' were also successful hits, in part because of their great vocal harmonies. Critics note the album was heavily influenced by William Alexander Chilton and Christopher Bell but it remains a fan fav.

Review: Originally released in 1983 and celebrating its 40 year anniversary, Bark At The Moon served as the third solo full-length from Ozzy, and not only marked his true embracing as a titular rockstar, but also ventured into a much more accessible synth-laden pop-metal vibe. When compared to both earlier solo works and Black Sabbath material, there's a notable helping of retro cheese across the entire affair, but that didn't stop the album from stoking the flames of Satanic panic upon initial release due to a murder being pinned on the project, whilst most notable is the inclusion of deep cut 'Now You See It (Now You Don't)', penned by bassist Bob Daisley taking square aim at Ozzy's wife Sharon due to her alleged tampering with the line up which led to Daisley's dismissal.

This album - his third affair alone - is his high watermark as a solo artist, with the title track scooping up chart success as a single and 'So Tired', while apparently unpopular with die hard fans on its release due to its near ballad style, boasting plenty of emotional resonance.

Review: After an explosive announcement trailer showing American MC legend Busta Rhymes on a four way call with some of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time it's hard not to be excited: Pharell Williams, Timbaland and Swizz Beats. His 11th studio album. Busta is indisputably one of the top 50 MCs of all time, a gracious and benevolent force in the industry that has played a hand in Miss Elliot's career, as well as a host of others on his self-founded label Conglomerate. Busta is no nice guy though, with a spine-chilling level of raw talent he's one of the smartest to hold the mic in our time. If 2020's 'Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God' is anything to go off, expect a star-studded line-up, with that album having appearances from Eminem, Mary J Blige, Rapsody, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Q-Tip, Kendrick Lamar, Mariah Carey, Rick Ross and more.
