Review: Promise solidified Sade's signature sound with lush, unhurried compositions that blended jazz, Brazilian pop, and soul. Building on the success of their debut, Diamond Life, this album established Sade as masters of mood music, transporting listeners with their sophisticated arrangements and Sade Adu's soft-touch vocals. The lead single, 'The Sweetest Taboo,' epitomizes the album's accessibility, with its infectious midtempo groove and breathy vocals. However, it's the opener, 'Is It a Crime,' that steals the spotlight, showcasing Sweetback's (the trio behind Sade) talents with Hammond organs and djembes, while Adu's vocals soar over big band-style crescendos. Throughout Promise, Sade explores the varied stages of love and relationships, with Adu's autobiographical lyrics conveying melancholy and introspection. Tracks like 'War of the Hearts' and Jezebel' delve into the complexities of human emotion, while 'Tar Baby' addresses themes of racial identity and unexpected pregnancy with sensitivity and depth. With each track, the band reaffirms their commitment to crafting music that moves and transports listeners - an approach that continues to resonate with audiences today.

Review: Rosalia's third album, Motomami, boldly blurs the lines between classical and contemporary music with humor and confidence. Spanning diverse genres like dembow, reggaeton, and electro, Rosalia effortlessly navigates through experimentation while paying homage to her influences. Review: Lizzy McAlpine's third studio album, Older, is a poignant and emotionally charged collection of fourteen tracks that showcase her remarkable talent as a songwriter and vocalist. Delving into themes of love, loss, and the complexities of growing older, McAlpine's heartfelt lyrics and captivating vocals resonate deeply with listeners. The album opens with the enchanting 'The Elevator,' setting the tone for what's to come with its harmonious melodies and introspective lyrics. From there, McAlpine navigates through the highs and lows of relationships in tracks like 'Come Down Soon' and 'Like It Tends To Do,' where she grapples with insecurity and uncertainty. Throughout Older, McAlpine's songwriting prowess shines as she candidly explores her personal experiences, including the death of her father and her own struggles with mental health. Tracks like 'All Falls Down' and 'March' offer poignant reflections on grief and resilience, while 'Vortex' delivers a powerful climax with its haunting vocals and stirring instrumentation. With each track, McAlpine expertly crafts a sonic landscape that draws listeners in, weaving together lush instrumentals with her emotive voice. From the tender piano chords to the soaring violins, every element of Older feels purposeful and deeply evocative.

Review: Sade's debut album Diamond Life (1984) introduced a distinctive blend of minimalistic soul and jazz-infused pop, contrasting sharply with the synth-heavy trends of its time. Lead vocalist Sade Adu's modest contralto and understated elegance enchanted listeners, earning comparisons to legends like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. The album's standout track, 'Smooth Operator,' showed the band's penchant for crafting sophisticated, emotionally resonant music amidst a backdrop of serene instrumentation. Diamond Life navigates themes of love, commitment, and everyday struggles with an understated grace, epitomized by tracks like 'Hang On to Your Love' and 'Your Love Is King.' Sade's ability to convey depth and desire with concise lyricism and atmospheric melodies set her apart as a master storyteller in the realm of blues-infused pop. The album's subdued tones and atmospheric production create a stunning sonic landscape that remains impactful. Diamond Life made Sade a household name as a pioneering figure in minimalist soul, setting the stage for her illustrious career and leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.

Review: Sade's 1992 album, Love Deluxe, immerses listeners in a luxurious blend of quiet storm, R&B, and jazz-pop, enveloping Sade Adu's evocative expressions of desire and heartache. Emerging from the mid-'80s UK jazz-pop scene, Sade perfected a sound that fused jazz, bossa nova, and soul with a modern, streamlined edge. From their beginnings as a fusion of former members of post-punk and new wave bands, Sade evolved into a cohesive unit, crafting seamless compositions that seamlessly merged soulful staircases of sound with liquid-crystal pop-funk. Love Deluxe stands as their most monolithic work, a sonic journey characterized by its ethereal fluidity. Sade's music became synonymous with cosmopolitan exotica, transporting listeners to a world of jet-setting luxury and romantic introspection. Adu's introspective lyricism explores themes of love and longing with a depth that transcends traditional romanticism, delving into the complexities of human emotion. The album's production, marked by programmed beats and a minimalist approach to instrumentation, aligns it with the emerging trip-hop genre, characterized by its fusion of lushness and dread. The precise interplay of drums, synth, and guitar creates an immaculate sonic landscape, perfectly complementing Adu's mesmerizing vocals. Each track on Love Deluxe"serves as a poignant exploration of love's multifaceted nature, from the relentless devotion depicted in 'No Ordinary Love' to the introspective character studies of 'Feel No Pain' and 'Pearls. Through Adu's evocative storytelling and the band's masterful instrumentation, Love Deluxe transcends mere romanticism, offering a profound meditation on the mysteries of love, birth, and death. It's an album that defies easy categorization, inviting listeners to lose themselves in its blissful abstraction and emotional depth.

Review: Stronger Than Pride marks a subtle shift in Sade's sound, emphasizing a more stripped-down, meditative approach to romance and introspection. Recorded after a hiatus, the album exudes a breezy, unhurried vibe, with compositions that loop back on themselves and melodies that leisurely unfurl. While not as minimalistic as later efforts, the album showcases softer rhythms and lighter melodies, allowing Sade's airy vocals to shine. Songs like 'Love Is Stronger Than Pride' and 'Turn My Back on You' capture emotional honesty and candor, buoyed by sparse arrangements that enhance Sade's directness. Throughout the record, Sade's writing maintains a mantra-like quality, repeating phrases to imbue the songs with quiet anguish and introspection. Leroy Osbourne's background vocals add warmth to Sade's cool melodies, enhancing the emotional resonance of tracks like 'Paradise' and 'Nothing Can Come Between Us.' The band's cohesion and faith in each other are evident on Stronger Than Pride, with each member contributing to flesh out Sade's ideas or provide space for them to bloom. While lacking the glitz and melodrama of previous hits, the album's emotional clarity and restrained production make it a compelling addition to Sade's discography, showcasing their ability to evolve while staying true to their signature sound.

Review: Sade's first album in ten years at the time, 2010's Soldier of Love reaffirmed her unique place in music. In an era dominated by bombastic pop acts, her signature blend of smooth grooves and restrained emotion still stands out today. The album maintains that classic sound while subtly incorporating new elements, like the dub-esque snare crashes on 'Babyfather.' Sade's music, often characterised by its tasteful understatement, captures moods with nuance and precision, such as the haunting piano motif that runs through 'Morning Bird'. With its soothing allure and timeless appeal, Sade once again proves why she remains unparalleled in her craft.

It's Only Love That Gets You Through
Review: Sade's Lovers Rock marks a significant evolution in the band's sound and image. Departing from their signature luxuriance, the album embraces a sparser, knottier sound that beautifully balances past influences with contemporary trends. Adu's vocals, thick and low as ever, blend seamlessly into the breezy landscape of acoustic guitar, reggae bass, and simple percussion, creating an atmosphere of understated sensuality. The album's themes range from new love to motherhood to societal issues, showcasing Adu's lyrical prowess and her ability to navigate the complexities of human emotions. Lovers Rock also pays homage to the cultural influence of Caribbean Britishness, both in its title and its musical style, adding depth to Sade's sonic palette. While the album was released amid a pop landscape dominated by shiny, slick productions, Sade remained true to their sound, avoiding obvious trends and opting for a more introspective approach. The album's impact reverberates through contemporary music and allowed Sade to maintain their unique identity and continue evolving with each release.

Review: Beyonce's Cowboy Carter is a bold and poignant exploration of American roots music, marking a departure from her previous works while asserting her dominance across genres. Inspired by her 2016 experience at the Country Music Association Awards, where she faced criticism and racism despite her Texas roots, Beyonce delves into Louisiana Cajun country, the rivers of Alabama, and the streets of Memphis, reimagining Americana, folk, and country in her own image. The album serves as a powerful statement on the erasure of Black contributions to country music and American culture, with Beyonce reclaiming her rightful place in the genre's history. Through collaborations with legends like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, as well as emerging Black country and rock musicians, Beyonce highlights the enduring legacy of Black artists in shaping these musical forms. Cowboy Carter is both a sonic journey and a cultural commentary, blending elements of folk, country and rock with Beyonce's signature style and vocal range. From the haunting cover of the Beatles' 'Blackbird' to the electrifying trap beats of 'Ya Ya,' the album showcases Beyonce's versatility and musical dexterity. No doubt, 2024 will be another strong year of Beyonce led by this album.

Review: Was anyone ready for one of the most talked-about albums of the year to be Andre 3000 going ham on the flute? Probably not, but in a post-reality world New Blue Sun just slots right in. Of course the legions of Outkast fans are going to be split when an artist of such prominence takes a wild swerve into experimental musical pastures, but for those with an open mind or a pre-existing appreciation of ambient and leftfield music, this album is an easy sell. Teasing the tension between acoustic and electronic, ancient and hypermodern, grounded and ethereal, Andre has been bold and honest in presenting this album to the world and his gamble has paid off.

Review: The fifth studio album from New York's perenelially preppy masters of the catchy indie anthem sounds like a tantalising mix of trademark qualities and an ever widening eclecticism, not to mention lyrical concerns that mirror the big scale traumas and worries of American life through the minutiae of interpersonal relations. The title itself comes, appparently, from an eyewitness account of a plane that lost its roof mid flight - add your own geopolitical metaphor here. But in short, there'll be a few surprises but VW fans everywhere will also get a serious dollop of what they've been waiting for for almost five years.

Review: SZA's last album Ctrl in 2017 took the American vocalist into the stratosphere and so a follow up was always going to be a big challenge. But she rises to it and then some as the GRAMMY award-winning Top Dawg artist calls upon a top draw list of collaborators including Jeff Bhasker, Rodney Jerkins, DJ Dahi, Ant Clemons and Lizzo. The album went straight in at number one on the Billboard chart and was widely acclaimed by critics for its vocal performances and mix of r&b, pop and hip-hop styles. Plenty fo SZA's own innermost feelings are fully translated into this record, making it another absurdist, ambitious work.

Review: Andre 3000s 87-minute flute epic makes it onto a double CD courtesy of Sony. One of the most intriguing, enveloping and therapeutic LPs of 2023, New Blue Sun sees the Outkast veteran drop the mic in favour of myriad flutes, both digital and acoustic, creating a loose, patient album which sounds somewhat like the lovechild of Jon Hassell and Ras G. The whimsically named tracks unfold in a languid dream sequence, feeling improvised but focused, sparse yet dense, and deeply emotive throughout. 3000's far-from-virtuosic flute performances add to the charm and unpredictability of the album, and ensure that the overwhelmingly gentle music doesn't veer too far into vapid new-agery. One for yer pensive off-days!

Review: Celebrating half a century of rock legacy, AC/DC's Back In Black gets a special edition release some 44 years after its original unleashing. The iconic album is well known for its thunderous riffs and anthemic choruses and though it is very much of its age, it solidified AC/DC's status as one of rock's greatest bands, despite the appearance of flat capped Geordie Brian Johnston in place of Bon Scott, who died tragically in 1980. With hits like 'You Shook Me All Night Long', live favourites 'Hells Bells' and 'Rock 'N' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution' and the title track, the album reached all-new heights of rock energy and big riffery and now this anniversary edition offers a fresh perspective on a timeless classic while showcasing AC/DC's enduring influence on the rock landscape.

Review: The fourth and final studio album from the now disbanded French electronic duo, Daft Punk, Random Access Memory gets a re-release on Sony complete with an exclusive poster and 16-page booklet. This release pays tribute to late 1970s and early 1980s American music, particularly the sounds hailing from Los Angeles at the time. For this seismic album, the band developed and enriched the minimalist production style typical of their previous releases though collaborating with session musicians performing live instrumentation, limiting the use of electronic instruments to simple drum machines, a custom-built modular synthesiser, and their signature vintage vocoders. Spanning an impressive selection of genres from disco, to prog rock and pop, the album also boasts a serious list of chart-topping collaborators - from Nile Rodgers, to Pharrell Williams, to Giorgio Moroder. Featuring hit single, 'Get Lucky', this album is already considered a defining release of the 2010s pop/electronic landscape.

Review: For people of a certain age, their teenage years were defined by the edgy grunge, alt and punk rock sounds of bands like Alice in Chains. Three decades later their seminal sophomore effort, Dirt sounds as good as it ever did and gets an anniversary reissue to mark the occasion. It comes with plenty of powerful drums and big-ass basslines as well as yelping vocals and fuzzy textures that take in a range of emotions and even bigger riffs. This issue features a special insert and comes across four sides of vinyl so it's nice and loud, just as intended.

The album featured four top ten songs in the UK alone and set the stage for George to become the household name and performer we came to enjoy. The singles included are Wham 'Rap! Packed with infectious melodies, catchy hooks, and George Michael's soulful vocals, it's a timeless collection of feel-good hits. From the irresistible energy of 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' to the heartfelt balladry of 'Careless Whisper,' each track exudes youthful exuberance and infectious charm. With its slick production and memorable songwriting, the record remains a quintessential pop masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences worldwide. It's a testament to WHAM!'s enduring legacy and their ability to craft songs that transcend generations and has very much ensured their place in pop music history.

Review: Hip-hop star and 'mumble rap' pioneer, not to mention all-out legend, 21 Savage delivers his third full-length studio album, American Dream. Coinciding with a new, forthcoming biopic about his life - American Dream: The 21 Savage Story - this is probably set to be the rapper's most forthcoming and acclaimed album to date. Having shouldered a fraught early life prior to his rise to stardom in Atlanta (Savage, real name Sheyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was born in Plaistow, London, to parents of British nationality and Caribbean heritage), Savage's earliest days are a hot topic when it comes to the theme of shaken personal identity and the double consciousness of immigration, a topic not commonly explored in contemporary hip-hop (it should be). Already lauded as the project through which Savage divulges all, this album serves as a birds-eye view of his history and a defiant rejoinder to the American ICE's misguidedly loaded statement, 'this whole public persona is false'.

Review: After an extended hiatus of nigh-on five years, Vampire Weekend has finally got around to recording a new album. Only their third studio set in total, Only God Was Above Us sees the trio muse on the weight of history - their own as much as anything else - while fretting about what lies ahead for the human race. Musically, much of what's on offer is densely layered and impressively loud, with loads of intricate musical detail (check the jazz horns and mad stereo panning of 'Classical' and the string-laden, White Album-era Beatles nostalgia of 'Capricorn') working in unison with their attractive, harmonic, saucer-eyed vocals. It's a bit of a triumph all told and one that proves that there's plenty of life yet in Vampire Weekend.

She has since become renowned for her raw lyrics and for delving into the everyday struggles and intricacies of relationships and has won a legion of fans, not least among them Taylor Swift, who invited her out on tour. Her breakout moment came with the viral sensation 'I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend,' followed by the enchanting 'We Fell in Love in October' in 2018. Fast forward to 2021, she unveiled her debut full-length album and soared up the charts. Now she is back with I'm Doing It Again Baby which comes on limited gatefold red vinyl and is full of more of her guitar-driven melodic indie-pop sounds and singalong hooks.

It set a high water mark for dance music albums very early on and has rarely been better when it comes to complete listening experiences that also pack a dancefloor punch. It mixes up techno and house with plenty of booming baselines but also atmospheric tunes with a unique sense of mood that is utterly alluring even all these years later. Review: Birmingham metal behemoths Judas Priest make their illustrious return on LP number 19; Invincible Shield. Serving as follow up to 2018's frenetic yet direct Firepower, the material this time around promises to hark back to the more loose, proggy edges of classic 70s cuts such as 'Sinner', whilst simultaneously eschewing the more grandiose experimentation found on the likes of 2008's symphonic Nostradamus. In essence, it's a victory lap of almost every sonic avenue the band have torn through during their multiple decades long tenure and although plagued by pandemic-related delays which then morphed into touring/scheduling conflicts, the six-year wait has been beyond worth it. Riffs = Check. Leather = Check. Rob Halford's sky-piercing vocals = Double Check.

The exhibition has been put togther to explore how the women of those times changed the mood and direction of British culture then and forever more with their radical ideas and rebellious methods in the fields of music, painting, sculpture, photography, film, and performance. They helped to liberate women and this collection of punk and hardcore has been put together to reveal further layers of depth to this great cultural shift.

Review: Soulful, fuzzy, funky punks Gossip reunited in 2019 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their critically acclaimed fourth album Music For Men, which ultimately ballooned into a worldwide tour. It would be a full year later, at the tail end of 2020 that iconic lead vocalist Beth Ditto would tease on her Instagram that she and her bandmates were in the studio cooking up some new goodness. Another three years on, just last November, avid fans would finally catch official word of Real Power; their sixth full-length overall, and follow up to 2012's A Joyful Noise. Marking their second reunion and first new material in well over a decade, if the menacing post-punk of 'Crazy Again' doesn't grab you, then the glitzy gospel-disco banger of a title-track surely will. If neither do, are you even a Gossip fan?

Review: Back in 2019, American power-pop trio Muna swept in to save the day with their second studio album, Saves The World. In contrast to 2017's About U, their sophomore effort is more of a universal appeal to recovery than valentines' letter, dealing in themes of addiction, alienation, romantic desolation and cycles of abusive behaviour. Sonically, the palette is weird, dreamy and bright, working in Goldfrappy gated snares and stabs to candid pop and trap progressions. A beautifully glossy, clean but still left-of-field, uncanny record.

Endless Summer Vacation is her eighth studio album and one that finds her fully leaving behind the upstart attitude with which she emerged. Here she pens a "love letter" to Los Angeles, which is where it was written, with producers such as Kid Harpoon, Tyler Johnson and Greg Kurstin all contributing. The lead single 'Flowers' set all-new streaming records as well as being Miley's first ever number one on the Billboard Global 200. The album is deeply personal and ushers in this new Miley era in style.

Last Christmas (4:23)

Review: If there's one seasonal single that's as timeless as it is unashamedly cheesy, then it's Last Christmas by Wham! Originally released in December 1984, radio stations quickly began to realise that the constant rotations of the track would cease as December would dissipate. The fact that the song came packaged as a double A-side with 'Everything She Wants' on the flip, meant a sleeper hit was hidden and waiting in the wings to take up almost equal spins as 1985 dawned upon would be listeners (the track even made it number one in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100). Repressed on translucent green vinyl, this 7" re-establishes both the classic Chrimbo anthem and the deceptively exceptional secondary A-side onto a singular slice of miniature PVC to bump out every festive season for that extra ho-fi experience (Holiday Fidelity).

Following 'Man of the Woods in 2018, he now drops his sixth full-length studio long-player Everything I Thought It Was. It has been teased by early singles 'Selfish' and 'Drown' and does everything you expect from a Timberlake album - it gets the juices going, emotions flowing, and will make you want to dance. Plenty of big hooks and flashy riffs all make it another perfectly formed dance-pop gem.

Review: If you want blood... well, we all know what comes next. AC/DC are among the most marmite of stadium-sized rock bands, their consistency over the past six decades seen by some as relentless homogeneity. In reality, it's an auteur signature. We know, within three chords of school uniform-clad Angus Young's iconic Gibson, whose song, it is yet to the trained ear there are huge differentiations at play. From drawly blues through to seismic main stage energy. Highway To Hell is one of the group's seminal early outings, and any self-respecting fan should own it already. Although perhaps not in this stunning gold edition, released to celebrate the LP's 50th anniversary. Newcomers can expect an insight into the barrooms filled with sweat and spilt drinks from which this mega group came out of and a clue as to why Bon Scott, the lead singer who tragically died as they really hit fifth gear, will always have a place in our hearts.

Review: It's 1977 and AC/DC are not-so-fresh after a spell as the support on Black Sabbath's tour. Looking for a new bassist, after a disagreement over whether to pick Manfred Mann's Colin Pattenden, the band agree on Cliff Williams, who would remain in place until 2003. Recording what became Powerage, their fifth studio album, Atlantic Records soon complained there wasn't a sellable lead single. 'Rock 'n' Roll Damnation' took form, one of the group's outliers, which comes without standard guitar solo but with maracas and hand claps. While this proved divisive among die hard fans, the album itself has gold waiting to be discovered deeper down. 'Gimme A Bullet', for example, has been cited as the finest track the late Bon Scott would write, his lyrical flair and deft metaphorical wit shining through on a tune that won't let up. This was his final LP, and tragically three years later he was no longer with us, marking an end to the group's iconic first chapter.

Review: When it was first released, George Michael's Older was something of a shock to those who were used to his chart-topping hits of yore. Certainly, 1990's Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was a mature and expansive album from one of pop's brightest talents, but six years later Older took a moodier turn on tracks like 'Jesus To A Child' and 'Spinning The Wheel'. There are of course some big bangers too, from the slinky funk of 'Fastlove' to 'Star People', but this was a turning point in Michael's career which finally delivered the creative freedom he'd always so vocally called out for. This expansive special edition of the album comes with additional edits, remixes and unreleased tracks to complete the picture for a landmark slice of British pop music.

Review: But Here We Are is the new album from Foo Fighters, and marks the band's return after a year of staggering losses, personal introspection and bittersweet remembrances. Evidently a well-justified most-personal-album-yet moment for Grohl and co., the album follows the untimely passing of the band's longtime drummer and founding member, Taylor Hawkins, in 2022. Murmurations that Foo Fighters were going to be an entirely different band going forward have now been proven correct: while noted to have been intentionally made to channel the naivete of their debut namesake LP, songs like 'Rescued' and 'The Teacher' also bring several decades' worth of 'maturity' to theirs sound. They add a new, central theme: the fleeting nature of life.

Review: Spanning no less than 131 volumes in print, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has understandably found cult status among fans of Manga worldwide. Running from 1987 to present day, the most recent instalments began serialisation in 2023. Presumably looking to make the most of the first new chapters since 2012, Sony has opted to re-release the score to part five, Golden Wind, which landed in 2001 and was adapted into anime form. Setting the scene in Naples, Italy, the plot involves gangsters, drug dealers who specifically target kids, and a plot to kill the protagonist's daughter. Steeped in Japanese animated movie score traditions, the accompanying music by celebrated composer Kanno Yugo is at times tense, in other moments playful, often fantastic, regularly bizarre, and resolutely eccentric.

Review: This release marks the first offical vinyl outing for Gustavo Santaolalla and Mac Quayle's soundtrack. It is the highly anticipated 2020 sequel, The Last Of Us Part II and features stunning new artwork by Tula Lotay and liner notes by Co-Writer and Director Neil Druckmann. Musically it is a striking and emotive listen that takes in moments of bass heavy impending doom next to gentler tracks of acoustic guitar that soundtrack tearful moments. The dual narratives of revenge and differing perspectives of the game all shine through in beautiful fashion.

Review: 32 years on from the release of their debut album Speak and Spell, Basildon's finest drop their 14th full length. While there are echoes of their eyeliner-wearing, synth-bothering futurist past (see the glitchy "My Little Universe" and early New Order-ish "Broken", where Dave Gahan sings about 'dreaming of the future'), for the most part Delta Machine finds them in grinchy synth-rock mode, presumably shaking their fists at passing youngsters like a gang of grumpy old men. Thankfully, they're still capable of great things - "Soothe My Soul" has echoes of "Personal Jesus" - and there's enough to suggest there's some life in the old dogs yet.

Review: Not too long ago, the prospect of pop-punk legends Blink-182 reuniting with founding vocalist/guitarist Tom DeLonge was nothing more than a fanboy pipe-dream. Originally going on indefinite hiatus in 2005, leading to the formation of subsequent new projects (Angels & Airwaves, +44), before reforming in 2009 for a comeback tour and the eventual release of the criminally underrated Neighourhoods, DeLonge would depart yet again, leading to an era of divisive lukewarm reception from the fanbase while Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio would fill DeLonge's place for the band's next two full-lengths California and Nine. In the years since, vocalist/bassist Mark Hoppus overcame his battle with cancer, leading to another, perhaps more organic and mature reconciliation process. The resulting turmoil has ultimately led to One More Time; the trio's ninth LP overall and seventh with DeLonge (following Skiba's amicable departure). Taking cues from their vastly differing side-projects, and distilling a myriad of sonic experimentation into a rejuvenated formula, the material here marks the most potent and dynamic work from all involved to date, while also boasting the first producer credit for drummer Travis Barker (who has previously worked with the likes of Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Aaron and Goody Grace). Reliably juvenile yet deeply mature, progressive, punk and pop in equal facets, this is the LP lifers have been begging of the pop-punk overlords for many a moon.

Review: Returning after a veritable splash in the chart-topping world of pop nearly ten years ago - and having laid down three full studio albums already - Zara Larsson fleshes out her brand evermore with the upcoming fourth LP, Venus. In keeping with a full Larsson coming-of-age, the Swedish it-girl fulfils her promise of an album chock-full of "uptempo, fun dance songs", albeit with an glitzier edge, and the sound of an artist assuming more ownership over her output, centring on the theme of feminine autonomy in the form of tracks like 'Can't Tame Her' and 'On My Love' with David Guetta. She's come a long, long way from 'Lush Life', exploring a multi-temporal brand of electronic pop and reclaiming her place in the limelight.

Review: The debut album Fantastic for Wham! put them on the map in 1983, setting the stage for superstardom with the follow up. Featuring four UK top ten songs - 'Wham 'Rap! (Enjoy What You Do)', 'Young Guns (Go for It)', 'Bad Boys' and 'Club Tropicana' - these songs and their accompanying videos made them MTV darlings and the most popular boy band of the early 80s, although there is a left-leaning political edge lurking beneath the pop sheen, esepcially on the earliest singles.

Review: If the first Wham! album didn't make them popular enough, Make It Big definitely established the duo as pop superstars. The album would eventually sell over ten million records and attain the number one album in over a dozen countries. Nobody could escape this album for almost two years, owning the airwaves with such hits as 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go', 'Careless Whisper', 'Freedom" and 'Everything She Wants'. All four of those top five hits in America with three of them number one chart topping blackbusters. The album would also launch George Michael's solo career. This reissue is true to the original release 40 years ago this year.

Review: The Australian rock gods' third album is one of their most varied in moods and displays a new found confidence in their sound, with songs like 'Squealer' and 'Ain't No Fun (Waiting Round to Be a Millionaire)' containing rolling instruemntal section where the band hit a trademark riff and interlocking groove and simply let it ride. From the title track, with its sleazy tale of cash for violence, to the Stones-esque 'Problem Child' and the frenetic 12-bar closer 'Rocker', the band's closing song in their live set for many years to come, this is the sound of a legend being forged.

Review: There are very few albums across any genre that stand the test of time better than 93 'Til Infinity, the classic debut record from the Hieroglyphics Crew's very own Souls Of Mischief. In an era where gangsta rap and g-funk dominated the West Coast rap scene, Souls broke ground on a completely unique and thoroughly West Coast tip. While the Dres and the Snoop Doggs were garnering much of the mainstream attention of the day, Souls were quietly forging a charismatic, critically acclaimed and cohesively shaped record that when categorised, sounded much closer to a tribe called quest than N.W.A.. The resulting sound of their debut is characteristic of the distinct style explored by the collective, including a rhyme scheme based on internal rhyme and beats centered around a live bass and obscure jazz and funk samples.

Dedicated to Deck's late father Frank Hunter and sporting features from fellow Wu-Tang monks U-God and Masta Killa, as well as lesser-known affiliates such as Street Life, Killa Sin, and LA The Darkman; Uncontrolled Substance offers over an hour of classic east coast hip-hop at its incomparable peak.

Review: There's been rather a lot of noise about Jaguar II, Victoria Monet's much-delayed full-length follow up to 2021's Jaguar mini-album. The hype is, in many ways, understandable - it did recently scoop the 'Best R&B Album' award at the GRAMMYs. More importantly, it's also very good, with the decorated songwriter-turned-pop star confidently serving up retro-futurist gems who's punchy 21st century r&b beats come cloaked in musical motifs that frequently offer nods to black American music of the 1970s, 80s and early 90s. The plentiful highlights include Lucky Daye hook-up 'Smoke', the dancehall-fired excellence of 'Party Girls' (featuring Buju Banton), the Fugees-esque beauty of 'How Does It Make You Feel', and the glossy disco-soul dreaminess of 'Hollywood', where her young daughter Hazel and Earth, Wind and Fire both play starring roles.

Review: Fear Inoculum brought a 13-year Tool hiatus to an end in typically dramatic, knock-your-socks-off and blow wind through your hair style. A fine example of what the group have always done so well - running with wolves like Mogwai, only with far more metal sensibilities, and a damn-sight bigger helping of experimentalism, when this bad boy arrived in 2019 it shot straight to the top of the US Billboard 200, the third consecutive record from the group to do so.

Of course, those charts don't necessarily mean as much in this age as they did when the preceding Tool LP dropped, but 270,000 album-equivalent units within the first week do not lie. Nor does the quality of work here. From the avant-garde percussion and awkward synths of 'Chocolate Chip Trip', to the almost-ethereal ambience of 'Legion Inoculant' and the riff and crescendo heavy 'Pneuma', it's a wild thing of beauty.
