Cat: UR 087. Rel: 18 Feb 20
Deep House
  1. Light My Fire (6:05)
  2. Moment In Marseille (4:13)
  3. Next Step 4wrd (9:14)
Review: There's been little new of note from Underground Resistance house band Timeline for some time, something that's doubly frustrating given the quality of their previous material. That includes this fine EP, which was first released in 2014 and now appears in stores again courtesy of a much-needed re-press. The highlight for UR aficionados and tech-jazz enthusiasts is undoubtedly epic flipside "Next Step 4wrd", a delightful chunk of sci-fi house rich in warm riffs, rising jazz horns and mazy synth solos. That said, plenty of people will gravitate towards the dewy eyed deep house soul of opener "Light My Fire", whose electric piano solos are superb, and the hypnotic dancefloor drowsiness of deep jazz-house number "Moment In Marseille".

  1. Rock It (4:49)
  2. Lock N' Load (4:57)
  3. Cut I (5:42)
  4. Cut II (5:09)
  5. Cut III (5:20)
Review: The grooves are heavy and dubby but still resolutely house-oriented as William Caycedo steps up to Dungeon Meat with his first EP in a couple of years. "Rock It" perfects the lean and mean groove - just a nasty drum jack and a big subby bassline, and utterly infectious with it. "Lock N' Load" follows a similar trajectory, although functions more as a tool than a standalone track. "Cut I" is a little more bubbly in its demeanour while still following the formula of drums, bass and little else. "Cut II" has a sweet bassline that will hook the dancers in, while "Cut III" keeps the pressure up with its nagging hats and subtle rhythmic fills. This is one for the DJs, but don't be fooled - there's bags of attitude tucked within these stripped back jams.

  1. Ron & Roland - "Nassaur Bassed Party" (6:46)
  2. Spacebunny - "Spacebunny" (6:29)
  3. Coke, Stoned & Bailey's - "Your Dad" (6:01)
Review: Surreal was a sublabel of Swag Records that operated around the tech house scene of the mid to late '90s. After 17 years of silence, the label awakens from its slumber to repress a few of the choicest cuts from the back catalogue. First up is Ron & Roland, otherwise known as Laurant Webb, whose acid-laced "Nassaur Bassed Party" sounds as fresh and infectious as it did back in '96. Spacebunny's self-titled opus takes thing deeper, but there's still a strident metallic groove that harks back to the early days of tech house in fine style. Cheeky trio Coke, Stoned & Bailey's only made a couple of drops on Surreal, but "Your Dad" is surely one of the strongest - a rubbery acid line and splashes of dub all over the shop.

  12. We'll Find Each Other Again
Review: Minneapolis deep house veteran Malcolm Moore returns to his own label Altered Moods with another blissful excursion into the farthest realms of smoked-out expression. It takes but a moment to sink into "Everydaelife" and place this sound - the kind of pattering rhythm sections and powerfully melancholic chords that you'd expect from the likes of Dubbyman, Anton Zap or Ron Trent. Moore has his own take on things though, bringing a blown out jack to the table on "Own The Nite (90s House Rescrub)"and creating a moving, downtempo funk on "Lunchtime Gaze". The more forthright grooves are impeccable too though - "Rodalies R1" hits every sweet spot a deep house lover could wish for.

  5. 414 (6:51)
  6. 410 (7:53)
Review: While some of the hype surrounding Acting Press may have cooled in recent times, the Berlin-based label remains in rude health. That much is proved by this album-length double vinyl excursion from Intera, an all-star collaboration between PLO Man, Hashman Deejay, C3D-E. The trio starts in stunning fashion with the spaced-out, far-sighted dub techno/ambient fusion of "697", before brilliantly wrapping huggable, ultra-deep chords around a skittish techno beat on "463". They pay tribute to the glory years of Detroit techno on the all-action bustle of "548", while "653" sees them place bouncy, glassy-eyed riffs and Modem-style electronic sounds atop another retro-futurist techno groove. "414" is techno-funk after an extra-strong dose of shrooms and "410" is a superb ambient techno excursion.

  1. Soul On Fire (4:57)
  2. Universal Funk (6:26)
  3. Funk Town (4:50)
  4. Concrete Soul (4:58)
Review: The sweet and funky side of the Constant Sound empire is back for a third bout. Cardiology deals in the finest disco edits and deep house delights for soul-centric groovers, and so it continues with this sure-footed 12" from The Owl. "Soul on Fire" is an appropriate title for the lead track, which keeps the vibe sizzling throughout with a strictly managed dose of Philly disco magic. "Universal Funk" takes things more upfront, but still those drops hold just enough back to keep the track utterly cool. "Funk Town" gets wild on the filter with the core sample hook before dropping some sassy bass and bongo heat at the track's apex. "Concrete Soul" completes the picture with a wistful choice in samples and the nastiest b-line on the whole record.

  2. Beam (6:42)
  3. Chocolate Machine (7:29)
  4. Steel Tabernacle (7:37)
Review: For their latest delve into the archives, Music From Memory offshoot Second Circle has decided to focus on Sandoz, a celebrated Richard H. Kirk solo project that generally joined the dots between dub and then contemporaneous styles of electronic music. The four tracks contained here were originally released on the earliest Sandoz 12" singles (1992-93), all of which are now frustratingly hard to find. Kirk's healthy obsession with Afro-futurism can be heard in the tribal chants, dub-wise bass and glassy-eyed electronics of opener "Human Spirit", while "Beam" sounds like a deeper, dreamier take on the Yorkshire Bleep sound he helped to create. "Chocolate Machine" is another deep, drowsy and melodious workout rich in clanking percussion hits, and "Steel Tabernacle" is Sweet Exorcist style "clonk" with added ghostly melodies.

Review: Zoo Look follow up on their welcome return (the Similar Steps EP on Lost Palms) with this choice drop for Lazare Hoche, the Parisian bastion of all things deep and housey. The Look have lost none of their charm as you can hear on the sultry and seductive "Sight Unseen", while "The Reason" sees them exploring dubby realms to enchanting effect. "Tranmission7" brings an intriguing broken beat flavour to the rhythm section, capturing a mood somewhere between techno, electro and dubstep and dipping it in honey for a sweet finish. Then Malin Genie steps up with a masterful remix of "Sight Unseen" that works some Detroitian flavours into the mix to great effect.

The latest Aesthetic release comes from emergent talents Josh Baker & Alfa, working in collaboration to summon up some sprightly grooves to put a spring in your step. "Formulate" is especially bouncy, not least thanks to those nimble synth lines, while "No 800" takes things in a tougher direction without losing that groovy swing and rich sense of melody. "Exteria" completes the set with a particularly funky concoction that heads towards the deeper end of the night.

Review: The latest joint on Constant Black is from Subb-an and Thoma Bulwer, who work together to bring forth some seriously smart ruminations on minimal techno with an inventive modern edge. "Apollo Sun" holds court over the A side with an artful, modulating synth voice that sounds as though it could well have been cooked up through a tangled network of patch leads. On the B side, "Cosmic Breaks" has a strong set of drums that crunch in all the right places, and plenty of dreamy seasoning to make for a truly smart midtempo roller. "Spray" completes the set with the spiciest joint on the record, all tightly wound beats and nagging rhythmic wriggles both built for functionality but equally intriguing on the ear - a perfect DJ tool with enough sass to stand on its own.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: After a strong opening bout, Chubby! steps back in the ring with more quality-assured deep house roundhouses from heavyweight prize fighters. Trinidadian Deep did such a fine job on the first Chubby! they've invited him back to unfurl a transcendent wooze of tumbling percussion and heady organ tones. Vincent Floyd steps up on remix duties, turning "Rebel Fract" into a more sharply rendered strutter buoyed by the original's radiant synths. Detroit don Javonntte drops in on the B side with the utterly classy "Jazzy Day", which funks and bumps with an unmistakable Motor City ruffness and some gorgeous melodic flexing over the top. Patrice Scott then steps in for a remix that finds the veteran producer wriggling into a stunning house shuffle with a piano line to die for.

Review: The pleasingly unpredictable Adeen label returns with another record of outstanding and distinctive quality. Scott Hess is an emergent talent, originally from Detroit but now based in Bangkok, who channels the heat and clamour of the Thai capital. The result is a funkified strain of house with rich synths and some satisfyingly organic licks. "Redlight" is the heavy lifter, all muscular bass synths and a nagging, twitchy groove, while "Circle Of Funk" brings a more introspective tone embellished by some gorgeous slap bass. "The Rhythm" pushes a more steamy kind of funk that nods to the Detroit house grandmasters.

Review: The crew behind the Hizou label is rightly chuffed that they've managed to secure this two-tracker from Andres, a Detroit producer whose releases - whether aimed at deep house dancefloors or hip-hop heads - are rarely less than superb. The two tracks the label has selected are suitably strong, too. Check first A-side "All U Gotta Do Is Listen", a warm and hazy chunk of break-driven mid-tempo deep house rich in jazzy samples, swirling crowd noises, chunky bass and dewy-eyed instrumentation. Andres' vintage influences are explored further on flipside "Night Time Is The Right Time", a P-funk influenced deep house bumper whose swinging drums and elongated organ chords casually tip a wink to classic New Jersey garage.

Review: As with its predecessors, the latest missive from Youandewan's Small Hours imprint gathers together a quartet of cuts from a variety of unheralded artists and rising stars. The main man offers up the deep, drowsy, '90s tech-house warmth of "Loophole" on side A, alongside Monochrome vs Velasco's "Paranoid", which is a similarly starry, sci-fi-flecked skip through intergalactic deep house chunkiness. Over on side B, Robin Ordell impresses via the clanking, bass-propelled tech-funk of "Rainbowitz", while Darren Allen brilliantly joins the dots between deep house, jazz and tech-house electronics on the imaginative and enjoyable "Strange World".

Review: [Emotional] Especial stalwart and all-round underground progenitor Richard Sen makes a welcome return launching new label Darkness Is Your Candle with some of his inimitable muscular wave-tinted machine wares for seedy dancefloors. "No Sameness" is a stellar lead track - all evil one-note bass, freaky synth wriggles and the odd touch of splashy mixing desk FX. "Darkness Is Your Candle" is a touch more anthemic with its big melodic leads, but no less seductive. "Into The Abyss" completes the package with another brooding workout that slips in the cracks between vintage techno and minimal wave - classic tropes delivered impeccably.

"Engine No 9" does a fine job of chopping up a classic hip hop vocal lick and strapping it to a chunky big room house jam. Dan's remix of Bryan Jones brings even bigger levels of hype, not least around the monster breakdown and drop. "Conjunction Funktion" brings a more flamboyant funky flavour to the table without losing that massive impact, and "Command Your Soul" fires off a plethora of riotous licks, samples, hits and stabs while keeping the funk at the forefront.

Review: Not all types of techno suits the album format, though that's not an accusation you could level at Derek Carr's particular brand of melodic, sci-fi-fired retro-futurism. "Pursuit Part 1" (a second volume will drop shortly) proves this point, delivering a suite of mostly club-ready cuts that can easily be listened to from start to finish in the comfort of your own home. It's full to bursting with warm, melodious, bass-heavy tackle, much of which combines his usual starry synths and deep space electronics with grooves which are far more influenced by dub techno than much of Carr's output. Highlights include the two-part "Not Tonight", the TB-303 powered "Acid Bath", and the glistening ambient/IDM lusciousness of "Nightfall".

Review: There's always a sense of reverent elation around a new drop from Theo Parrish, and he's not disappointing on this latest joint. Reports suggest this is the precursor to a new album, and there's a classic feel to this track that hints at very exciting times ahead. Parrish's sparks shine oh-so bright when he's sparring with the right vocalist, and Maurissa Rose seems to be giving him the right inspiration on "This Is For You". He's created the kind of understated soul statement that inhabits some of his most treasured albums, using a raw and simple drum machine backing to achingly beautiful key refrains that melt around Rose's voice on the vocal A side, and give rise to a sublime instrumental version on the flip.

Here he turns his scalpel to a couple of heaters towards the jazzier end of the jazz-funk spectrum. Head first for A-side "Reach N Search", a spiraling slab of horn-heavy dancefloor jazz underpinned by a heavy funk groove, before turning your attention to flipside jam "Monterey". This is arguably the more accessible and ear catching of the pair, thanks in no small part to the original cut's heavy jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion vibes.

On one side, the label bosses James Priestley and Giles Smith take a tender touch to "Ghana Nila", a little-known spiritual originating in a Californian ashram. Ge-ology is ready to go on the flip, bringing his distinctive MPC funk to Herbie Mann's "Stomp Your Feet" and teasing even more juice out of this already abundant floor burner from the late '70s. From movement meditation to effervescent energy, this record has a spectrum of feelings covered in two edits that sound genuinely fresh and inspired.

The seven-inch singles boasts two distinctively different versions. On the A-side you'll find the "Rooftop Mix", a striped-back blend of dub disco and boogie in which Pendergrass's fine vocals rise above a rubbery bassline, colourful '80s soul synths and toe-tapping beats. Over on the B-side Caserta flips the script, layering selected snippets of Pendergrass's vocal over a deep, dark and bass-heavy house groove. It's sub-titled the "Basement Dub" and that's exactly what it is.

His latest outing on Neroli is a terrific example of this, with title track "Some Sweet Ting" offering a tactile, life-affirming journey through starry synths, twinkling piano solos, jazzy bass, layered percussion and huggable chords. Flip to the B-side for the poignant, enveloping intergalactic deep house brilliance of "Atmospheric Funk" and "Sounds of the Rebel", whose darting synth-bass and glistening lead lines are as colourful as the accompanying pads are deep.

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: Stee Downes is one of contemporary house music's most prominent vocalists and here he lends his silky tones to Freerange, Defected and OM Records associate, Lovebirds for this new one on South Street. "Want You In My Soul" is a mix of old and new, where disco percussion and cosmic synths nestle alongside a mid tempo house groove with plenty of warmth. Downes' vocals are the loved up icing on the romantic groove cake. Flip over for the "Summer In London Edit" - a more stripped back and direct version, perfect for outdoor stages as the sun beats down.
