Deep House
  1. Light My Fire (6:05)
  2. Moment In Marseille (4:13)
  3. Next Step 4wrd (9:14)
Review: There's been little new of note from Underground Resistance house band Timeline for some time, something that's doubly frustrating given the quality of their previous material. That includes this fine EP, which was first released in 2014 and now appears in stores again courtesy of a much-needed re-press. The highlight for UR aficionados and tech-jazz enthusiasts is undoubtedly epic flipside "Next Step 4wrd", a delightful chunk of sci-fi house rich in warm riffs, rising jazz horns and mazy synth solos. That said, plenty of people will gravitate towards the dewy eyed deep house soul of opener "Light My Fire", whose electric piano solos are superb, and the hypnotic dancefloor drowsiness of deep jazz-house number "Moment In Marseille".

Review: While some of the hype surrounding Acting Press may have cooled in recent times, the Berlin-based label remains in rude health. That much is proved by this album-length double vinyl excursion from Intera, an all-star collaboration between PLO Man, Hashman Deejay, C3D-E. The trio starts in stunning fashion with the spaced-out, far-sighted dub techno/ambient fusion of "697", before brilliantly wrapping huggable, ultra-deep chords around a skittish techno beat on "463". They pay tribute to the glory years of Detroit techno on the all-action bustle of "548", while "653" sees them place bouncy, glassy-eyed riffs and Modem-style electronic sounds atop another retro-futurist techno groove. "414" is techno-funk after an extra-strong dose of shrooms and "410" is a superb ambient techno excursion.

  2. Spacebunny - "Spacebunny" (6:29)
  3. Coke, Stoned & Bailey's - "Your Dad" (6:01)
Review: Surreal was a sublabel of Swag Records that operated around the tech house scene of the mid to late '90s. After 17 years of silence, the label awakens from its slumber to repress a few of the choicest cuts from the back catalogue. First up is Ron & Roland, otherwise known as Laurant Webb, whose acid-laced "Nassaur Bassed Party" sounds as fresh and infectious as it did back in '96. Spacebunny's self-titled opus takes thing deeper, but there's still a strident metallic groove that harks back to the early days of tech house in fine style. Cheeky trio Coke, Stoned & Bailey's only made a couple of drops on Surreal, but "Your Dad" is surely one of the strongest - a rubbery acid line and splashes of dub all over the shop.

Review: Ilian Tape overlords the Zenker Brothers have long been fans of Surgeon's brand of no-holds-barred, industrial-strength techno. While the Birmingham-born producer has previously played live at label events, this blistering three-tracker marks his first outing for the Munich based imprint. Interestingly, opener "The Golden Sea" is arguably a little dreamier and warmer than much of his output, with melancholic chords and bubbly electronic motifs riding a forthright and intergalactic techno groove. Elsewhere, "Aqua Marina" wraps more alien-sounding lead lines and shimmering chords around a more stripped-back, redlined rhythm track and "Hostages Of The Deep" sounds like a far-sighted fusion of classic Surgeon, Drexciya and Livity Sound.

  4. Ingi Visions - "Visionair Tu" (5:06)
Review: The latest drop on SlapFunk finds a three-strong cast bringing their A-game to the label that knows how to balance the chunkiest house with the tightest minimal funk. Samuel Deep is sounding fierce on "SlapTrax", an uptempo workout peppered with zippy FX and playful sound design. Ingi Visions then gets into a wriggling mood with the tracky, tremendous "Visionair Wan", while Julian Alexander brings a punchy strain of tech-house to the table for "Macrodyn". Ingi returns again for "Visionair Tu", another hopped-up hoedown full of twitchy percussion and a cheeky bassline to get bodies wiggling with approval.

  3. Runnin' (6:03)
  4. Narroways (5:34)
Review: The latest drop on Constant Sound's electro branch, Infiltrate, comes from wild-card Bristolian chameleon Borai. When he's not dropping tuff, jungle-hewed rave wreckers for Hotline and Higher Level he's collaborating with October on refined house bumpers or dread-filled noise excursions in Spiritflesh. As if that wasn't enough, here he is turning his hand to genuinely fresh twists on the electro formula - a breath of fresh air in a crowded marketplace. "Flutta" keeps things snappy and decidedly pacey, but the overall mood is really quite light, while on "Rashaba" things get much darker, to an almost theatrical degree. Some of that breakbeat ruffness sneaks in on "Runnin" and then a little garage swing offsets the dubbed out showers of melody and cheeky rave stabs on EP closer "Narroways". Stunning stuff.

Review: The Cong Burn crew are back with another of those buy-on-sight split 12"s. Once again they're focused on building up the community of artists orbiting the label, so it's great to see stellar returns from many of the names on here. Lack has a compelling take on broken beat techno to impart, all smudged out dubby atmospheres and off-centre beats. Tonto makes their debut appearance here with the stripped back echo chamber dread of "Rust", and Chekov twists things up with the angular bleeps and jagged time signature of "Fold". Perfume Advert seal the deal with "Mad Downer", an elegant shaker that juggles nagging sound design with mellow mood setters.

Review: The EYA Records crew continues their trip into a new musical direction with the Lonewolf series, this time offering up a split 12" between two distinctive techno producers. Bladymore Galaxy, otherwise known as Riccardo Buccirossi, brings some effervescent synthscapes to bear on his side of the record. There's an old-skool sensibility to the production - all uptempo drums and layer upon layer of sparkling sci-fi melodics - but there's equally a welcome fresh energy and emotional honesty embedded in Buccirossi's style that makes it so joyous to listen to. Belgian producer Innershades brings a punchier style informed by electro and trance - the perfect sound to lose yourself to as the dry ice creeps around and the sun starts rising over the dancefloor.

Considering the quality of the events, you can drop the needle on this various artists joint safe in the knowledge the same high standards apply. The killer new project from Voigtmann, V3000 is up first with the ear-snagging machine funk of "The Man Who Belongs To The Horizon", before Alex Celler drops in some utterly cheeky, wriggling micro house naughtiness to add some spice to the after party. Review: The 20th year of Billy Nasty's Electrix label kicks off in style with this essential slab of mutant electro from the mighty London Modular Alliance. There's a razor-sharp focus to the drums on "Concerning Irregular Figures", but it's offset by the warmth of bass synth to capture a mood somewhere between early Radioactive Man and Skanfrom. "Exit Strategy" takes things in a freakier direction with plenty of errant blips and squiggles from the group's vast array of gear. "Glove Box" has a darker tone that nods to vintage Dopplereffekt, which Assembler Code's "Rewind Remix" twist things up into a pacey workout that maintains the dread-filled atmosphere perfectly.

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: Not all types of techno suits the album format, though that's not an accusation you could level at Derek Carr's particular brand of melodic, sci-fi-fired retro-futurism. "Pursuit Part 1" (a second volume will drop shortly) proves this point, delivering a suite of mostly club-ready cuts that can easily be listened to from start to finish in the comfort of your own home. It's full to bursting with warm, melodious, bass-heavy tackle, much of which combines his usual starry synths and deep space electronics with grooves which are far more influenced by dub techno than much of Carr's output. Highlights include the two-part "Not Tonight", the TB-303 powered "Acid Bath", and the glistening ambient/IDM lusciousness of "Nightfall".

Review: The latest release on Orson welcomes a true electro stalwart - the mighty DeFeKT. Matthew Flanagan's commitment to the sound has been mightily impressive, and so it continues on this frankly stunning EP. Flanagan is sounding more upbeat than ever on "Flow To It", a joyous summertime electro funk freakout which Transparent Sound ably twist up into a more mechanised dancefloor weapon. "Double Tap" keeps the resplendent melodies front and centre, while also providing ample space for the DeFeKT brand of rave firepower, and then "Hour Zero" ups the ante with some strafing arps that don't let up for the duration.

Review: This New Year, Jeff Mills is inviting us to look inward in the form of his Every Dog Has Its Day series. The last time we had an installment came 17 years ago, just enough time for a periodical cicada to emerge from theground, finished with its former life as a nymph. The sixth edition of this series is soon to follow in spring dressed in brown, continuing to deliver a spiritual and emotional raft for you to see that Every Dog Has Its Day. Mills himself has said, "You never figure out life, you just get used to it." Reflected in this record is that sentiment, that life doesn't present to you the answers because there are none. What is right and just for you, may not be for me, so how can I share with you any secrets. Electronic music can act as a guide, a catalyst of your headspace; it is not the map.

Review: French producer Nathan Melja has amassed a spotless discography on the likes of Mister Saturday Night, Antinote and Opal Tapes, and now debuts on Kalahari Oyster Cult with another terrific offering. "Synesthesia" is futuristic sci-fi techno with shiny synth lines and a hurried kick pattern that gets you on your toes while the bassline burrows deep. TTT affiliate and Incienso co-founder Anthony Naples steps up with the first remix. His version is more dreamy thanks to the array of background pads, then closing things out is Pariah with a punch groove that leaves the original's prying lead intact. Essential stuff.

"97-1" hits like a bullet - all dead-eye rhythmic barbs designed to dig its nails into any mix and not let go. "Field" is no slouch either, but there's a greater emphasis on space and atmosphere sculpting behind the tough percussion. "Breaker" is a chiseled, tunneling workout for the hours of ascendance on the dancefloor, while "Hawav" deals in knockout blows when you're on the ropes. Fierce stuff for those who want to make an impact.

We're particularly enjoying the lilting, soft-focus dreaminess of A-side "Pulsar", where swelling chords and poignant synth-strings sashay seductively between a densely layered, mid-tempo breakbeat groove. The long-serving producer ratchets up the energy on low-slung electro flipside "Oedo 808", another largely dreamy affair that boasts the twin attractions of raw acid style bass and ear-catching TR-808 drum machine cowbells. To finish things off, Lone serves up the EP's most blissfully loved-up moment, "Blue Moon Tree", whose bouncy pianos, fluttering vocal samples and languid chords sound like they were tailor-made for sunrise.

Now he comes to 20/20 Vision with a vivid new EP of productions that cement his place in the contemporary electro firmament. "Route 909" pivots between classic techno and emotive electro, with cinematic results. "Flyby" is a more crafty broken beat excursion with a nimble lead line that flutters over lingering piano lines. "1111" is rowdier affair that sets out a gnarly acid line front and centre, but not at the expense of Shinra's tendency for refined production. "On & On" reaffirms this point with a smart balance between growling low end and sophisticated top line melodies, rounding out a sterling EP.

Review: We are proud to welcome Fear-E for his Dark Entries debut 'Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place' out February 28th. Fear-E is the moniker of Scott McKay a Glasgow based DJ and producer. Scott has already made a name for himself as one of Glasgow's most technically-gifted and diverse selectors over the past decade. Then a slew of releases on the home-grown Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and Super Rhythm Trax introduced Fear-E, equally skilled studio operator, to the world. 'Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place' contains six club-ready tracks to "smash sound systems and illuminate sweaty warehouses." The title is a reference to a nickname that Glasgow has, coming from Cumbric, means 'green hollow' or (dear) 'green place'. Layering cut-up vocals with warm thumping beats, Scott creates a stripped-back yet deeply jackin' vibe. Call these tracks what you will, "acid attacks", "club destroyers", "pickle ticklers?!" All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. For the cover, Scott commissioned legendary Detroit illustrator Alan Oldham, who's artwork has graced established an identity for Transmat and DJAX-UP-BEATS, to create a futuristic portrait of Glasgow in black & white and with green kryptonite flourishes by Eloise Leigh.d

"Made In Detroit" presents these rare and significant recordings for the first time, offering a suite of tracks that fix UK-style bleep melodies (all the rage in late 1989/early 1990) to the kind of fizzing rhythms, warm bass and futuristic electronics then popular in the Motor City. There are two versions of house-tempo standout "Don't Do It Like That" (one with a whispered lead vocal by Ann Saunderson), while the clanking and metallic "Nexus" and more ghostly "No Statues" accurately fuse the best bits of both British and American techno at the time.

Review: 4TRK-029 sees label head DJ Hyperactive team up with Jason Patrick for the Inflexion EP. The release kicks off with, "Shadows Of The Underground" a stripped down acid techno track that builds in a mutating fashion with it's 808 cymbals, filtering shakers, and pitch bent synth stabs Mississippi Mud Hound gets underway with a growling bassline that morphs throughout alongside additional synth elements and percussion bits. On side b, "Harrier Env" provides a jacking feel that manages to also have stutter step bass groove in conjunction with 909 percussion, a spacey drone, and a mysterious melody. Closing out the release is "Bandaid On A Bullet Wound" an atmospheric stripped down track with powerful bass, sci-fi bleeps, and a lead synth riff that pushes and pulls in intensity throughout the track.
