Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Mysticisms' Dubplate series is back once again, this time with Nick Barber aka Doof at the helm. He was a 90s trance icon who here serves up some tunes that have previously only been available digitally. They were all recorded to tape and remixed and live dubbed on the desk so have an authentic feel to the melon twisting sounds. There are plenty of psychedelic twists and turns to the wispy synth leads and snaking hits here, all with heavy and cavernous low ends and plenty of future facing ideas. Each one is sure to set the dancefloor alight when dropped at the right moment.

Review: In response to reports of 'Discogs sharks' prowling around this deep house classic from Gene Hughes, HotMix have gone ahead and reissued the eureka moment that is 'Track Show (Volume One)'. Paring things back to their barest bones, the early-nineties nuage and prolific house artist, whose other monikers included Rawthenticity and Bluejeans, first released this six-tracker under the name Bluemoon Prodiuctions in 1990 via Code Blue. The first track might be deceptive to some, as its simplistic production is arguably the least endearing of the bunch, combining only a kick drum, bassline, pluck and stream train whistle; tracks two 'O' and 'U' quickly unravel these assumptions with a beautiful dyadic take on Italo and stringy-deep house respectively. Meanwhile, on the B-sider 'S', we're met with an early example of lo-fi house, while an angsty electro mood is heard on 'E; a final coup de grace is then delivered on the crepuscular piano highlight, 'Night', which strikes the perfect thematic balance between sexiness and misery.

Review: Some 29 years after it first hit record stores, Nick Holder's sought-after Fruit Loops EP returns in remastered and reissued form. The long-serving Canadian was already four years into his career - and many 12" singles deep - when he delivered the four-tracker, which offers a funky and seductive take on deep house rich in disco and boogie samples. Check first the Chic-sampling disco house roll of 'Dance, Dance, Dance', before moving into the more complex (but not less attractive) 'Keep On Running'. 'The Message Is Love' does a brilliant job in turning choice loops and samples from MFSB's 'Love Is A Message' into heady house gold, while 'Clap Your Hands' makes merry with the stomping brilliance of Hamilton Bohannon's most famous tune ('Let's Start The Dance').

Review: A decade ago, German brothers Frank and Christian Berman created a genuinely overlooked masterpiece: an album that combined classic vocal and instrumental performances from soul, jazz and funk performers (extracted from multi-track tapes of the original recordings) with new Brazilian-flavoured backing tracks featuring some of Brazil's most famous and storied musicians. The album, credited to Studio Rio, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' that's arguably even sunnier and more positive than the great man's original soul recording. It's a genuinely brilliant version, all told, and one that sounds like a summer festival and end-of-night anthem in the making. Mr Bongo thinks so - hence this must-have 7" single that pairs the vocal version with a previously unreleased instrumental take.

He has roasted pretty exclusively here and never fails to innovate with each new drop. This one again hits the mark across seven elastic techno cuts that are underpinned by lovely dub weight and propelled by tight, pinging kicks. 'Dachtekker' is lit up with hi-tek soul synths straight from Detroit, 'Double Standard' is deliciously deep and driving with swirling pads smeared around up top and 'Small Stone S700' manages to pair soul-drenched chords full of subtle joy with kinetic drum programming that makes you want to move. Superb.

Themed after the terrifying notion of entering a black hole, and likening this to the vicarious yet no less enjoyable illusions of grandeur that might go hand in hand with attending a Millsart rave, 'The Trip' has been routinely billed as "the world's first cosmic opera" (in its performance incarnation), and attempts to sonically answer the question as to what exactly happens when we cross that fateful event horizon, in ambitious, live-jam-born-recorded form. Via eight cosmic suites of terrifying techno wizardry (we'd expect nothing less from the Belleville 'blazer), Jeff Mills brings his originally live, light-eating vision to vinyl, nailing the cosmick perceptual horror of being "sucked in" through dust-bitten repetitions, descending mind-melts and dissociative-detuned fugues - the latter is most intriguing; 'When Time Stops' is the track of choice for exploring Mills' least repetitious and most improvisatory tendencies.

Review: Romain Reynaud is one of the most respected names in techno for the past 15 years and over the last handful, he has also evolved to dabble in other styles as well. One of those different names he uses to create other styles is Brako and tthis is the fifth record he's made under this newer offshoot. 'Bandit' on the first side should really work well on the dancefloor regardless of their experience level in dance music. The beat is catchy and the rhythm is ideal to work in any part of an up-beat house DJ set. The underlying melodic parts sneak up on you which adds and extra treat for the depth of the production. 'Police' on the second side, has a more traditional house style to it. The magic is in the addictive simplicity of a well worked loop made perfect for the late-night. Review: First released in 1999 through the titanic Swing City Records, 'Cada Vez' was a fond and well-played cut on the label, one which showed off and continues to flaunt the pan-Latin supergroup's talents. Though they (Adres Lafone, Liliana Chacion, Davide Giovaninni) were at their zenith a four-or-five piece band, most of Negrocan's releases were primed for the club. This release via Groovin Italy hears two fresh remixes from Grant Nelson and Avant Garde, and brings contemporary weight to their original deep-south Latin house forte.

Review: Since launching in 2018, the Belpaese imprint has delivered a string of must-check EPs featuring re-edits of old Italian songs and instrumentals. It's a bit of a niche pursuit, but given the country's contribution to dance music culture over the years one that makes total sense. Volume ten in the series arrives with two sweat-soaked cut-jobs to enjoy. 'Ancora Un Baccio' is a quirky and eccentric Italo-disco number that boasts both rubbery slap-bass (including some energetic soloing) and surging electronic bass, alongside suitably camp lead vocals and heady vocalisations. 'Un Sogno Per La Testa' is a bit more Balearic minded, with the shadowy scalpel fiends making merry with what sounds like a holiday-ready 1980s pop song full of glistening guitar licks, jazz-funk bass and unfussy beats.

Review: The seventh edition of Disco Records' aptly named catalogue comes as a four-track selection of wonky edited delights. They may be of dubious origin, but such is the purpose of the disco edit form: to draw attention to the craftmanship of disco over its more surface-level aesthetic signifiers. That said, we do know of a few sources: Sabata's 'Man For My Lady' (1980) is the opening highlight, and though very subtle changes have been made - in the form of various brightenings and fattenings - this record is more than enough to keep our affective responses to this label's Discotechnical assembly line going.

Review: Steffi's Klakson label is one of the few real creams of today's electro landscape; inviting only the very best of the best artists, few of its contemporaries can really say they've managed to achieve the same feats in the same space of 20 years or so. The latest V/A EP to grace their rolling stocks, 'Weaponized Fuel On The Acid Playa', looks ostensibly like it could be homage to old-school UR or its many Dutch copycats, but in sound, it hears back completely differently, feeling like a future electro hellzone in which all manner of evil mutant experiments remain on the loose. By far the best-produced electro EP we've heard in recent months, you won't be disappointed by the likes of Shcuro's 'Feel' or Driven By Attraction's 'Weaponize'.

Here, the storied Detroiter returns to Quintessentials, an imprint he first appeared on two years ago, with another strong batch of emotive, deep and immersive club cuts. The real standout - for us, at least - is A-side 'Crush (Hitman on Set remix)', where Ron Trent style hand percussion hits, drowsy electric piano motifs, eyes-closed vocal snippets and the dreamiest of pads rise above unfussy deep house beats and a warm, evocative bassline. Elsewhere, Sololo features on sunset-ready deep house box jam 'Haibo', while 'Just Saying' is a jazzy, percussive and bass-heavy workout tailor-made for increasing energy levels out on the dancefloor.

Review: Rocksteady Disco has pressed up another tasty little hand-stamped 7" and it offers up another fine brace of Edits From Detroit on this third volume in the series. Eddie Logix is the man behind the buttons and he kicks off with 'BOSS' which has low-slung guitar sleaze and slow-motion groove rotations topped with sprinklings of percussion, angular rock riffs and guttural vocals. Flip it over and things get more smooth and seductive with 'FMPM' which has a dubbed-out disco feel, subtle cosmic chord work and bouncing bass that will keep any 'floor moving. Another great little 45.

Review: One of New York deep house's foremost day ones returns to the limelight with a fresh 12-track mini-album, showing the yutes how it's done with an onslaught of unlikely-sounding beats, cuts and breaks. All tracks on Hear are loose and lackadaisical, often forgoing the need so behooved by many house music producers to get the transient design - the snap of the hit, the length of the tail - just right; Joey's drums are wide and ungated, seeming to prove the point that minutiae don't tend to make a tune. It's instead the ineffable quality of "nailing the vibe", the nuts and bolts of which we can't claim to know, that convince us of Pal Joey's expertise. 'We Show Off' is the gem on this self-released album, with its dreamy, vocoded and slowed acapella, crude car-horn synths and glossed-out backing washes.

Review: Spanish label Mate welcomes a couple of heavyweights in Rafa Santos and Franck Roger for a new deep house EP that shows the kids how it's done. It is Santos who serves up the originals starting with 'Where Is The Clubbing?' which has depth but also drive - rich pads swirl about over the supple kicks and clipped vocals bring the soulful little hooks. French maestro Franck Roger remixes with a little more swing and a stripped-back, late-night feel that is sprinkled with cosmic dust. On the flip, 'Smooth Jazz' is just that over cuddly beats as star-gazing piano tinkles and sombre sax notes bring real class. 'Don't Fool Me' shuts down with plenty of Chez Damier-style weight in the kicks and steaminess in the female vocals.

Review: UK house mainstay Nail has some long roots that go all the way back to the Nottingham scene of the mid-cities as part of the DiY crew, while he also explored more downtempo sounds as one half of Bent. He is still very much kicking out the jams all these decades on, always with a nice sharp groove and crisp hi hats. That is the case again here with his Mercy EP on Kick-n-Dance which ones with the striped back and infectious 'Broccoli', gets more deep and vibes with 'Lettuce' and comes doused in soul in the case of the flipside opener 'Whas Happenin' which channels Marvin Gaye. 'Spring Greens' is another smart tech house closer that does everything right.

Dave subtly adds new breakdowns, live percussion and even some additional vocals to give his version extra pizzazz, whilst making the most of the insistent flowing groove that made this a sure fire floor filler. On the flip things get more more echo heavy, whilst the sharp jazzy musicianship shines through. There was never an instrumental version on the original 12". Add an acapella and bonus beats then you have an essential disco package for every Disco DJ's record box.

Review: Be Strong Be Free debuts a new series here, Mellow Magic Worldwide, which will offer up a series of DJ weapons that have been produced by "worldwide studio buds." The first one opens with some superb tackle from Gold Suite whose brilliant 'Crush' is a slow-burning 80s jam and emotive rollercoaster that has made a real impact during road testing experiments. On the flipside is the mysterious Mancunian Visions Of Eden who debuts on vinyl with a lush deep house jam 'When It Has Past that has a subtle Balearic charm. Lastly comes Murrin who heads up the Puca Sounds label and co-runs Berlin party Fandango. His 'Maybe Tonight' is a late-night cosmic delight.

Keeping the curation short and sweet, Sitting In Trees is an eight-track rendezvous to the Island; it follows, in a well-timed fashion, on the hot heels of his very own label Growing Bin, whose releasing of music in this vein knows few bounds and is by now probably more than overflowing. Sifting through the reams of dusty but still golden trance tapes, private presses, and smooth jazz obscurios to find the cuts - by Peak Of Normal, Patrick Jahn, Erobique et al. - to make up this short but sweet LP’s worth.

'Hygge' finishes things off on a sexy house vibe. There is really something for everyone on this. Abacus stands for quality for those who know.

Review: Bs As deep brings his latest work to Onwards Recordings, through which he transcends time and space through shuffly, serene deep / Chicago house motifs. All tracks here are swanging but soft, tending synaesthetically towards the blue-purple, occupying that thin nave between melancholy and uplift. The mid-section piano layers on A2 'Blow Cafe' are a real highlight, though they're second only to the seductive, addictive hip-house narrative delivered by vocalist Maxi Iborquiza.

Review: This is the second of two releases from Emotional Rescue that looks to the music of the Eric Calvi who headed up the collective Exo Fender, a project that brought together a bunch of friends, producers, and studio amigos. This one is a live boogie jam 'Music In My Mind' with Brooklyn DJ and producer Steve D'Aquisto. He was a regal at The Loft and a friend of Arthur Russell so all that bears out in the music - a loose-limbed disco groove with languid percussion and big vocals. A Justin Van Der Volgen edit rounds out the 12".

Review: Irish producer Balmr lands on Selections after nice outings on the likes of Sofa Movement Records, Kolour Detroit and Expanded Records which have all established him as a fresh deep house artist. His love for the Motor City shines through again here with the warm, dubby drums and swirling pads of 'In Search Of' bring to mind the Midwest's best. Jon Dixon remixes with a little extra bite in the percussion and 'Forager' then layers up more dusty drums and wooden hits with diffuse synth curlicues. It's a sound that works on both head and heel and lastly, Glenn Davis remixes with a touch of jazzy cosmic class to his synth work.

Review: Smoove AKA Jonathan Scott Watson brings us Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride for the most recent Wack Records release. The producer is known for using his cut up style of east coast flavor. On the A-side, 'Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride' uses Pharcyde tracks and edits them seamlessly like a DJ would. Focusing in on the original instrumentals, he creates a jazzy sound with them. 'Summer Cyde' expands upon this theme while using the all-time classic 'Passin Me By' in the mix. This is like having a dub plate of Pharcyde cuts to your own personal bag. Sounds like these will never get old.

Review: Emotional Rescue takes another trip into the twisted world of post-punk dubs, electronics and oddities here at the hands of DJ, collector and radio host Gary The Tall. The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. It appeared on 1983's In Hollywood and was recorded at their home studio on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. Gary The Tall's remix finds him teaming up with Aaron Coyles under his new alias of Exotic Gardens and the results are loopy and dubbed out to perfection.

Review: Back in 2020, Vick Lavender unveiled his 'Time Traveller Mix' of 'Set Fire To Me', a superb cover of Willie Colon's Latin classic of the same name. It never appeared on wax at the time - it was, sadly for vinyl enthusiasts, digital-only - so this 12" is sure to be in demand. Naturally, it kicks off with that fine re-imagining - a brilliant blend of layered Latin percussion, intergalactic electronics, sunset-ready chords, jammed-out Rhodes motifs and rolling deep house grooves. This time round, he's also added a more stripped-back, drum-heavy version (the 'Beats N Life Vinyl Mix'), while the EP also boasts another previously digital-only treat: Kai Alce's deep house-meets-broken beat tweak of D Millz collaboration 'There It Is'. In a word: essential!

Review: For anyone who heard it, Rasa's gorgeous 'When Will The Day Come' was one of the standouts of Kerri Chandler's timeless and masterfully eclectic entry into the DJ kicks mix a couple of years ago. It's a warm, slow, soul gem with Balearic guitar riffs, swooning strings and an impossibly smooth vocal. It is one of those expensive and sought-after treasures but gets reissued here on 45 rpm courtesy of Backatcha. On the flip is an equally lovely and seductive soul cut for warm afternoons and loved-up dance floors. 'Questions In My Mind' has pristine vocals and happy piano chords next to plenty of sunny melodies.
