Bobo's Reason (8:15)
Beggar's Run (5:10)
Bisso Love (6:55)
Review: French DJ-turned-remixer Young Pulse's popular Paris Edits series notches up seven volumes, this time via a three-tracker packed to the rafters with heavyweight disco-funk grooves. Arguably the best of a very strong bunch is 'Bobo's Reason', a reverb and delay-laden, slightly beefed-up rearrangement of an excitable, horn-heavy disco-soul tune from the Philadelphia school of orchestrated dancefloor fun. There is of course plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP though, with the spacey, synth-laden, percussion-rich disco-boogie of 'Beggar's Run' being joined on side two by the high-octane disco-funk weight of 'Bisso's Love'.

I'll Be There (5:31)
Review: It's tie to spin it back, all the way back, to 1995. That year, John Lisners aka Baraka, served up the only two EPs he era made under this alias and the both came on Boogie Beat Records. Now, Kniteforce Records is reissuing the first of the two with on this newly remastered 12". Up first is 'Nutty Bass' which has just that. It is a clatter of percussion and jostling breaks that eventual resolve into a high energy drum & bass banger with bass pinging about the mix. On the flip is the more soulful and cosmically minded 'I'll Be There' with its loon bird calls, pinball melodies and liquid rhythms. Essential.

Happy (Hammond) (bonus beats reprise) (1:43)
Review: Random Rap Records offshoot Dinked 45 has hit gold with 'Happy (Hammond)', the first single in seven years from Chris Read and keyboardist Rob Barron's occasional So Much Soul Players project. As the title suggests, it's a cheeky and cheery Hammond funk reinvention of Pharrell Williams' classic which features Barron playing the famous melody - alongside a few wild solos - atop a sweaty, bass-heavy, breakbeat-driven dancefloor groove. It's a simple idea brilliantly executed all told and a guaranteed party-starter to boot. Over on the flip you'll find a slightly tougher, shorter 'Instrimental Mix' that cuts down the use of the melody in favour of elongated Hammond chords and more prominent beats, as well as a short 'Bonus Beats' drum track for DJs who like to get busy in the mix.

Review: Lloyd Stellar was not really a man gifted an extraordinary name when he was born. Rather, it is the chosen alias for Dutch dude Erik Griffoen, but he's surely made the name his own with a rapid rise in the number of releases of his music so far this year. Now Stellar gets has mitts on 20/20 Vision alongside The Droid, aka Ben Evans. In line with the label's exploration of electro over the past few years, this is hi-tech machine funk through and through, with twitchy synth lines and brittle, crisp drum machine patterns programmed within an inch of their lives. Maintaining a steely, dystopian mood throughout, this is serious electro for the heads, executed with precision and flair.

Review: If you've stumbled upon Polo & Pan for the first time here then consider this blurb a gateway to an entire musical realm that has been getting built since the middle of last decade. Well, maybe even longer. The French electronic artists have already achieved big things in their homeland and beyond, and by that we mean certified platinum sales internationally for debut album Caravelle. This is the follow-up and it's every bit the grand voyage.

The duo's videos speak volumes about where the tunes themselves are at. Think very colourful, visually captivating cartoon worlds, editing either set to unapologetically up front beats or allowing the more laidback rhythms to unfold like narratives. It's certainly danceable, but we're talking pop odyssey not disco fodder for this one, and wouldn't want it any other way.

Si Yo Volviera A Nacer (Aires De Huelva) (3:17)
Review: NuNorthern Soul's 2021 Record Store Day offering is something of a treat. It's a fresh reissue of an impossible-to-find promo 45 first issued to promote Flamenco legend El Turronero's 1980 disco album, EL Hondo. It features two tracks that have long been regular features in the sets of many dusty-fingered Balearic selectors, especially globe-trotting cult leader DJ Harvey. On the A-side you'll find the cosmic, driving, synth-laden brilliance of 'Las Penas (La Cana) - a genuine "everything but the kitchen sink" affair topped off by El Turronero's distinctive vocals - while the more exotic 'Si Yo Volviera Al Nacer', where synths and Sitars accompany the Flamenco-disco grooves, resides on the flip.

Review: Is there a label as iconic Nervous in all of house music? Probably not. The New York staple is responsible for shaping and reshaping the genre many times over the years and in 2021 turns an impressive 30. Of course, there are plenty of celebrations going on to mark the occasion, including a bumper multi-part compilation feature all the label's many golden grooves and classic tunes from over the years. Next to enduring label associates like David Morales and Mood II Swing, Armand Van Helden and Kim English, plenty of new school names get in on the act such as Danny Howard, Darius Syrossian and Gerd Janson. Superb.

Review: Some six years after debuting via a deliciously angular and energetic EP from Jaquarius and Mono-Enzyme 307, the Acid Avengers imprint notches up release number 20. Like most of the label's EPs, it's a multi-artist affair. Sometime Balkan Vinyl and Bass Assault artist Acidulant handles side A, bouncing between rushing, piano-sporting 1992 hardcore revivalism ('Super Rave'), sub-heavy deep electro haziness ('Save The Last Rave') and throbbing, arpeggio driven trance/breakbeat techno fusion ('Hauz Trax'). Voiron, who last graced the label back in 2016, takes over on the flip. The Paris-based producer first fuses glistening, spacey melodies, twisted acid lines, post-electro beats and dirty bass on 'Bon Kick Voiron', before opting for deep acid house on 'Digital Voiron Workstation' and atmospheric, Orbital-meets-'90s tech-house on 'Sugar Voiron'.

Review: Archeo know how to hunt down a rare jam and give it the kind of reissue it deserves, so who better to handle this job? Tonica & Dominante was a studio project conceived by Antonio Iglio and Antonio Moxedano, which yielded a couple of singles and an album at the end of the 70s. It's a warm, organic sound before Italo disco swerved hard towards synthesisers and drum machines, and you can see why anyone digging for the rarest grooves would go crazy for the two tracks on this previously rare-as-hell 7". This new Archeo version ports the original tracks onto 12" and folds in two tasteful, clubbed-up dub mixes from Leo Mas & Fabrice.

Punkin' Funkin' (4:38)
Review: It would be fair to say that Paris Holley is not one of the best-known purveyors of 1980s funk and soul, though the handful of releases he put out in the decade tend to be cherished by serious diggers and DJs. 1984 jam "I Choose You", which is here reissued for the first time since the '80s, is undoubtedly one of his standout moments. Hazy, super-sweet and laidback, the cut sees Holley adding his soulful, high octave tones to a blissful backing track rich in fluid piano lines, sun-kissed guitars and mazy synth lines. Arguably even better is synth-funk B-side "Punkin' Funkin", a fizzing workout that sounds like a more soulful, talkbox-free take on Zapp man Roger Troutman's trademark sound.

Review: Italian producer Enrico Sangiuliano may have been serving up dark and intoxicating techno twelves for the best part of a decade, but never before has he turned his hand to the full-length format. Biomorph is not just any old debut album, either, but rather a concept album described by Drumcode as "a journey of evolution". In practice, that means an album that ebbs and flows throughout, opening with a dash of spacey ambient, before charging off on a trip marked out by pulsating techno rhythms (crafted from both straight 4/4 beats and breakbeats), spiraling electronic motifs, booming, elongated basslines, experimental electronic interludes and more future big room techno anthems than the contents of Adam Beyer's USB stick. In other words, if you love Drumcode's particular brand of bombastic techno, you'll love Biomorph.

Review: Long time Balearic maestros A Man Called Adam came back strong with a new album this past summer, and now the gift keeps on giving with a second series of tasteful remixes from it. Aleksandir's mix of "Higher Powers" is a beautifully gentle and melodic deep house groover. Pads drift by like zephyrs and Sally Rogers' vocals appear like illusions on the clouds. A Man Called Adam themselves then dub out "Michael" with muted acid lines and muffled vocals. Felipe Gordon then layers up balmy pads and warming chords on his remix of "Mountains & Waterfalls" and a demo edit of "Higher Powers" from Aleksandir closes things out ion glistening, heartfelt melodic house fashion.

Review: Thatmanmonkz is Scott Moncrieff to be precise, a Sheffield based producer who been making house music since around 1997 but more recently on Kolour LTD and of course Delusions Of Grandeur: where he's recognised as a label mainstay. His new album Colombusing is a mighty 14 track effort, and there's a wide variety of moods and grooves, not to mention collaborations! Some of those very hookups are the highlights on here, we must say. There's a couple of tracks with San Francisco minimalist/human beatbox Dave Aju; "Turn It Out" is a deep and sleazy funk jam with Cameo-ish vocals, while "Boogie Down" features the sweet lungs of Erik Rico whose Curtis Mayfield impressions suit this feelgood soul jam just perfectly. "Baked" features the deep poetry of NYC's Malik Ameer on this on this dope jam full of urban flavour. There's music to dance to too, rest assured: "Take U 2 My House" featuring Khalil Anthony is surefire deep house aimed squarely at the dance floor.

On the A-side, we delve into Haruka Nakamura's beautiful tribute to Bill Evans' timeless piece 'Soiree'. On the flip, 'Valsa de Euridice' is a rendition of Vinicius de Moraes' classic from Etepalma, the inaugural 2006 album by Nobuyuki Nakajima. Review: Brothers in sounds (and lineage) Mark and Clive Ives deal with two of the biggest issues impacting music right now on one incredible record.WOO have a reputation for taking parts of archived sounds and formulating new things from those segments, and in this case the work is born from excerpts of four-track tape recordings made in the late-1980s. They then began reflecting on the "imminent nature of humanoid robots", and starting to create Xylophonics/Robot X. From artificial intelligence to reuse and sample politics and economics, these themes seem to guide the sounds themselves, which feel strangely nostalgic and futuristic, a vision of tomorrow that is inseprtable from the humans that made it - their understanding of the unfolding machine age through weird distorted jazz tech, deconstructed dub and psychedelic electronica. So, remembering all this is a reconfigured version of stuff made almost 35 years ago is truly mind-blowing.

Review: We can only begin to image how Silverchair felt taking to the stage at Chicago's legendary Cabaret Metro. It's 1994, and the band aren't even old enough to buy a drink (members are still only 15), but their spectacular debut, Frogstomp, has already positioned them as Australia's great post-grunge hope, meaning a venue famed for seminal shows by scene deities like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins - among others - would mean the world to the young upstarts.
Live was the resulting album, initially released on promotional CD only, packing seven tracks of pure on-stage energy, cacophony, and guitar-first dirt, alongside a special bonus bit at the end. Available now for the first time ever on black plastic, with just 5000 copies pressed, it's what you might call a veritable piece of 1990s rock history.

Review: XTC's cult 1984 album 'The Big Express' was essentially just that - a 'big expression' of brash indie noise, tempered by the shadow of the industrial old Wiltshire town in which the band grew up, Swindon. In true post-punk fashion, the band combined the electronic Linndrum with guitar, bass and vocals. But the 'Express', in their words, wasn't just self-expression; electronic rock, to XTC, also reflected the quite literal concept of the 'railway express', reflecting Swindon's reputation as one of the core towns behind the UK's railway system. A remarkable album, and a slice of history at that.

The artist himself is obsessed with freedom and his sound sits somewhere in a nether region between house, jazz, hip-hop and minimal. Carefully layered and precisely structured as it takes listens on a colourful and kalaedescopic journey through different moods and grooves with plenty of worldly influences, it's the sort of deftly designed album that works both at home and in the club and packs in plenty of profound moments of emotion.

Review: It seems like we write about a great new compilation from French powerhouses Wagram every week. This is the latest and it takes aim at trip hop which is the niche sub-genre to emerge from the shadows of hip-hop, firstly in Bristol. This is an unashamed collection of what the label thinks are the biggest tunes and most classic joints from across the years all on one triple vinyl set. Some unpredictable inclusions are the likes of Radiohead's otherworldly hymn 'Everything In Its Right Place' amongst standouts like Snooze's 'The Chase' (Revisited By Fila Brazilia).

Review: Morphology makes a move to join the Kontakt label family with his Lakeland Dubs EP, which is sure to win plenty of fans right off the bat. Once again he goes on a deep dive into dubbed-out electro across a trio of immersive and atmospheric sounds. 'Needleleaf' starts with underwater vibes, spangled leads and mysterious chords backing a prickly beat and 'Understory' slows it down to all-out dub territory with watery effects and droplets, ripples and waves all filling the arrangement. 'Lakeland' is a punchier and more kinetic drum machine workout with silky synth wisps and irresistible rhythms.

Review: John Cale's Word For The Dying album was first released in 1989 on the Opel label. It was produced by Brian Eno and is Cale's "heartfelt response to the Anglo-Argentinian War." It takes the form of Cale's favourite Dylan Thomas' poetry set to music and the lyricism and melodic phrasing throughout is truly sympathetic and complementary. The compositional qualities of this album are astounding and make for a resonant listen. This reissue comes via All Saints on limited clear vinyl and a download code is included.

Five albums deep in 1986, they also released the astounding Rewind EP, which now gets faithfully reissued by Mr Bongo for a fresh audience. Every track on here is a winner, from the epic, proggy groove of 'I Love You' to the low slung, synth-rich funky angles of 'Shaka Doo Ba'. You won't regret copping this slab of wax, trust us.

Review: In the 60s and 70s Arthur Verocai arranged for the likes of Jorge Ben, Gal Costa, Marcos Valle and other such legends of Brazilian pop music. However, it was his self-titled debut album in 1972 which now largely defines Vaerocai's reputation, although it was a resounding failure in Brazil upon its release. His sound looked to US jazz, pop and soul as much as bossa nova, and it was only in the 2000s that it started to be picked up on in the US and elsewhere. The passage of time helps place certain records, and that's especially true of this incredible curio from a bygone era, which strikes a mysterious out-of-time-and-place quality as Rodriguez's classic Cold Fact. Here's to the overlooked greats - may they all find their moment in the sun eventually.

He is part of the Ute Records label collective and often hosts raves in uninhabited Scandi forests. This gorgeous new album comes with slow-burning downtempo grooves and nostalgic chill-out sounds that sink you in deep and take you on a roller coaster of emotions from euphoric trance-states to inward reflection. The Art Of Levitation is a vivid album both in concept and execution and a healthy retro-future style and mix of nostalgia and invention. It is a perfect accompaniment to quiet listening experiences and rewards your close attention.

Review: Sometime Constant Sound regular Kepler has released some terrific music over the last few years, not least last year's debut album 'Freedom Mills' (a set named after a venue in his home city of Leeds). He continues this fine run of form on 'Sense', his first outing on Breakfree. The title track is suspenseful, forthright and pleasingly psychedelic, offering an energetic, sub-heavy take on tech-house, while 'Confusion' pairs the swing and low-end pressure of UK garage with the glassy-eyed sonics of contemporary UK tech-house. Elsewhere, 'Feeling Hazy (Chugging Mix)' cannily combines crunchy drums with bleeping electronics, dubby bass and ghostly aural textures, and closing cut 'Breathe' doffs a cap to ambient techno and hip-hop influenced mid-90s IDM.

For a time only a select few DJs had this in their record bags, but these much anticipated bangers are now getting a full vinyl release. On the first side is a rip roaring edit of one of the greatest hits by the Queen Of Pop that's optimised for modern dancefloors. Over on the flip, things move into the after hours in minimal/tech house fashion with 'You Don't Dub Me' which samples a certain funky house anthem from the turn of the millennium.

Review: The sixth album from JK Flesh, Sewer Bait is a slo-mo, lo-fi, noise-inflected journey through the dirtier, grittier side of techno. The opening track, 'Soaked to the Skin' is a corroded, corrupted chugger - pulsing demonically, brushing against increasingly rougher textures, this is a track where everything is obscured yet each component comes together to create a groove that is intensely hypnotic. The titular track 'Sewerbait' feels more closely aligned to the industrial techno tradition - slamming drums meet searing synths to create a track that is powerfully alluring. The final track, 'Washed Up', is driven by a relentless, propulsive core - like an engine revving up, this track feels ready to take off. JK Flesh has a masterful skill for making the rough shine and highlighting the delicate amongst the rubble.

Review: Erland Cooper has always been concerned with the world around him, the Guardian dubbing him "nature's songwriter" as a result of his focus on trying to interpret Mother Earth through sound. Of course, she's not in the best shape right now, and even stopping to appreciate the smallest details of her mastery can often make us fill with dread and regret.
The fact that it's still not too late to change the future we've been ruining for ourselves over the past 200 or so years is also important to note. And it's this juxtaposition, between hope and hopelessness, dystopia and utopia, that seem to define this incredible collaboration between Cooper and the Scottish Ensemble - a live recording from a concert that really shows off the emotional power of classical strings in their most contemporary form.

Review: Simultaneously reaching back into the roots of Samba whilst reconfiguring the sound for a new context, Dominco Lancelloti's Sramba is an ingenious contribution to the world of Brazilian jazz. Recorded over two months in Lancelloti's home studio in Lisbon, and inspired by a couple of Russian-designed synths that came into the artist's possession, this is a project that was born out of experimentation. The opening track, 'Ere', features hypnotic guitar riffs and skittering drum sequences that gradually build into an infectious groove over the course of the track. On the B-side, 'Nada Sera De Outra Maneira' takes a softer turn with glittering hints of piano and a central narrative driven by velvety vocals. This is an exciting new take on Samba that opens up a new world of creative possibilities.

Review: California's Joe Babylon has been steering his own Roundabout Sounds through some lovely deep house waters over the last few years. Now the producer makes a big statement with his own debut album. He is something of a veteran having co-founded Plug Research back in 1994 and hosted underground events in Los Angeles during the mid '90s. Following on from outings alongside the likes of Rick Wilhite and Rondenion he now brings his own dusty, carefully disheveled house sounds to the fore. They have been crafted using an MPC which gives them their rough-edged appeal and they go from heads down back room joints to dubbed-out minimalism via dream late-night reveries. It makes for a fresh take on a tried and tested house template.

The honour of being the name on the wax this time round is given to Translate and Pulse who pair up for four funky and stylish techno tracks. The first 'Ocular Optics' is full of bounce and modulated synth ripples while 'Global Agreement' cuts loose on more manic melodic patterns that call to mind early Jeff Mills. The lashing synths and cantering drums of 'Nodes 2926' make for a fine peak time ride and then 'Backup Quest' layers eerie and haunting organ chords with edgy melodies and thumping kicks.

Finally unveiling her skills in the studio, Marginal Returns are the lucky hosts of her debut release. On the A-side, 'Rhythm Delay' unfolds as a heady, downtempo, dub-shrouded track. For the A2, 'Foundation' picks up the pace with delicate, glass-resonatory highs and a pumping bassline. On the flip side, 'Control Change' twists and turns through wonky beats and a blissful melodic background. While the closing track, 'Attention Movement' takes a darker direction, with melancholic synths joining abstract electric guitar samples. Another amazing release to add to Marginal Returns' already stunning catalogue.

Review: Spanish label Involve hits release number 40 and continues to grow old disgracefully with some face-melting techno from a fine crew of miscreants. Regal's 'Undisputed' is a pilled up old school techno banger with flashy synth work, while DJ Emerson's 'Xtc' is just as intense but this time from the synth patterns, acid and banging drums which all coalesce into a thrilling ride. Tensal's 'Metaverse' is edgy and unsettling with its nerve stabs, fractured vocals and unrelenting kick drum power then Asstnt's 'La Linea' closes out with 90s white knuckle techno and filthy guitar riffs in amongst the action.

This is another intriguing album on The Trilogy Tapes that pairs suspenseful emptiness with fresh instrumental interjections, creepy spoken words with atmospheric found sounds to make for an album that is part sound collage, part experimental rhythms and part ambient storytelling. We'll have to wait and see what they have - if anything - in store in way of celebration, but first Mooy has decided to offer up this collaborative EP from Dynamic Reflection regulars Viels and Pyramidal Decode. It is a concept record based around "a commentary on environmental disaster and the rapid evolution of technology" which honestly seems not so much a concept as just a statement of our current reality. The artist displays plenty of rage both lyrically and in terms of delivery here, with industrial hip-hop and rap, nu-metal and trap all distilled into something confrontational yet triumphant.

Although they would happily fit in alongside the latest Kyle Hall or Theo Parrish, thanks to some sexily syncopated work in the rhythmic department, there's a markedly different vibe to the likes of overtly disco-slanted rug cutter 'Gonna Make U Dance' and the prominently reggae flavoured overtones of 'Wat A Bam' and 'Mistic Flow', that means it'll stand out while knowing exactly how to keep the faithful on their feet. Irresistible.

For the A2, growling electric guitar melodies meet darkened synthlines and bludgeoning kicks to produce a powerful dancefloor-ready track. On the B-side, we have Ultra Bass on remix duties, offering a bass-stroke-acid-stroke-garage take on Matthais' signature sound - this is undoubtedly a peak time track for those out-of-control moments. Closing things up, 'Wires Around My Neck' slows to a patient pace - a duet of circling synth melodies and chugging drums give this track a delectably wonky, spaced-out vibe. A wonderfully varied release that is surely set to be a favourite for this year's circuit of festivals.
