Review: The mid-90s were a time of immense change for the death metal scene, strongly linked to the endless progression of the genre's most vital pioneers Death, who in retrospect, appeared to be reshaping, retooling and expanding the genre for their current and future peers in real time. Having already switched out the lyrical gore obsessions of their early material for the socio-political ponderings of 1990's Spiritual Healing, before turning to more opaque, introspective ruminations on their superbly technical, progressive death metal opus Human in 1991, a two-year gap would occur (a lengthy creative respite in terms of their prolificacy) before the arrival of 1993's Individual Thought Patterns. During this time, metal drumming legend Gene Hoglan (Testament, Fear Factory) would enter the mix along with King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque, and this newly refurbished line up would continue to build upon the virtuosic hyper-technical prog-death blueprint of Human, but with a major increase of oppressive, metallic menace, leading many to consider the work to be Death's most mercurial balance of artistic complexity and vicious heaviness.

Review: Following on from 1988's seminal sophomore triumph Leprosy, pioneering death metal forefathers Death entered into the 90s with a work that would shift perception on, not only their own project, but the entire genre as an entity. Released in 1990, Spiritual Healing marked a notable embracing of more melodious compositions, largely due to the presence of lead guitarist James Murphy, with this LP being his only contribution to the band's discography, along with bassist Terry Butler. Coinciding with the simultaneous maximisation of technicality and melody, the album would also shift the lyrical approach of primary songwriter Chuck Schuldiner, who began moving away from gore and viscera-soaked tales and focusing more on the real-world horrors of drug addiction, poverty, serial killers, organised religion and corrupt faith healers, just like the one that adorns the iconic artwork.

Review: There are few nu-metal bands from the formative late 90s/early 00s scene who achieved the monumental crossover appeal of Linkin Park. From their turntable spinning, frenetic rap-metal beginnings on 2000's global breakout Hybrid Theory, to the refined maturation of their formula on 2003's career-height Meteora, to their Jay-Z collaborative album Collision Course to the shedding of skin and rebranding as a genre-less alternative rock entity on 2007's Minutes To Midnight; as popular and accessible as they were, the band clearly constantly strived for sonic progression. Papercuts collects the highest charting singles from the group over two decades, with the most recent contribution being the previously unreleased 'Friendly Fire' recorded during the sessions for 2017's One More Light, which ultimately serves as the final new piece of recording from the band and vocalist Chester Bennington who would tragically take his own life later that same year. Ignoring the standard sequencing of a greatest hits which often lists the tracks in chronologically released order, here the cuts are compiled to sonically complement each other and reflect the band's ethos rather than a single line commercial pattern. Here is why the anthemic double platinum 'In The End' is juxtaposed with the minimalist rap-rock of MTM banger 'Bleed It Out', or why the previously unreleased fan favourite demo 'QWERTY' lands right between the U2 indebted 'What I've Done' and the original breakout single that started it all 'One Step Closer'.

It's almost unfathomable how long Judas Priest have been making noise, with their first steps into heavy metal megastardom taken in the late-1960s, a time when the genre was really just a glint in the eye of hopeful upstarts, including this troupe. More than 50million LP unit sales later, and it's safe to say their legacy is more than written, yet the most defining aspect of their tenure - unstoppable, unflappable - is only really apparent in their continued output. Well, OK, this is the first we've heard from them since 2018's Firepower, but nevertheless, across five decades they've barely taken more than four years off before coming back with new material. In this case it's been six, but there was a 24 month pandemic in and among, meaning you can let them off. Review: British rock band Atomic Rooster - made up from members of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown aka organ player Vincent Crane and sticks man Carl Palmer - had success in the 70s and 80s. They went through some mad stylistic changes in that time but remain best known for their hit singles 'Tomorrow Night' which hit number 11 in the UK charts and number four gem 'Devil's Answer', which both came in 1971. Neither of them feature on their self-titled album and debut from 1970 which itself made the Top 50 of the UK album charts, but it still packs a real punch with a prog rock feel.

Review: Proto-grunge/sludge metal band Melvins laid down six compelling songs on their fourth album. Lice-All was a cohesive, tightly woven trip made up of three original tunes and three fine covers. Two of them were originally written by the man, the legend, Alice Cooper, and one is by nose rock gang Flipper. The record is said to have influenced bands such as Sunn O))) and Sleep over the years because of the way it layer sup heavy, droning guitars. First release back in 1992 and something of a cult classics, this reissue comes on red wax. Back then, the album was known as a set titled LP, but also under the name Lysol.

Even as ill-health resulting from decades of living the ultimate rock 'n' roll lifestyle - alcohol, drugs, eating bats - has crept up on him. As this sentence is written, reports are hitting the entertainment press that he was spotted leaving a recording studio in Los Angeles with wife Sharon, the 73-year-old hell raiser looking frail but still clearly up to something.

Review: Fear Inoculum brought a 13-year Tool hiatus to an end in typically dramatic, knock-your-socks-off and blow wind through your hair style. A fine example of what the group have always done so well - running with wolves like Mogwai, only with far more metal sensibilities, and a damn-sight bigger helping of experimentalism, when this bad boy arrived in 2019 it shot straight to the top of the US Billboard 200, the third consecutive record from the group to do so.
Of course, those charts don't necessarily mean as much in this age as they did when the preceding Tool LP dropped, but 270,000 album-equivalent units within the first week do not lie. Review: The follow up to Newcastle metal icons' stellar debut, Welcome To Hell, is often regarded as one of the quintessential extreme metal contributions, even to this day. Venom would meticulously craft their sophomore effort, with vocalist/bassist Conrad Lent working overtime to mix the tracks, utilising his engineering experience in an attempt to keep costs low while also maintaining full creative control. The end result was Black Metal, a ferocious onslaught of unprecedented technicality, satanic imagery and malevolent atmosphere. It's no small secret that the project is all but directly linked, cited and blamed for the resulting Norwegian black metal genre that would slowly take decrepit shape in the late eighties before plaguing the nineties with as many controversial news articles as it did seminal albums. Diary of a Madman was released in 1981, just three years after the Prince of Darkness was thrown out of Black Sabbath due to the extent of his drink and drug problems. It should go without saying you have to take things pretty far to wind up an evictee from one of heavy metal's most full-throttle outfits. Nevertheless, it happened, so by the time this record arrived there was a clear desire to show people that was a temporary setback.
At the same time, there's also an element of sending himself - and that reputation - up here, preempting the comic book caricature of Evil Ozzy we would come to recognise, and love, in later years. Musically, it's as it should be - atmospheric, eerie, and packed with the classical-leaning guitar work of the late, great Randy Rhoads. 3million copies sold and counting, say no more.

Review: The long-gestating follow up to 1992's initial instalment, Black Aria II would finally arrive in 2006 after years of discussion from Misfits/Samhain horror-punk visionary Glenn Danzig, and further his exploration into the cavernous realms of modern classical dark ambience. Conceptually based around Lillith, the first wife of Adam, the material here is far more minimalist and starker than its gothic predecessor, while utilising a more varied array of instruments on top of the pre-established organ and strings, with more Eastern sonic influences to conjure a mercurial vision independent of the preceding volume. Complete with eerie chimes, chants and esoteric lamentations, the project marks one of Danzig's most intriguing works when compared to, say, his Elvis covers compilations, and offers a transportive, biblical, haunting narrative delivered almost exclusively via instrumental atmospherics and insidious gloom.

Review: Caputing the band in live action during the early 80s, Black Sabbath's Born In Hell is culled from the short tenure of former Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan as lead vocalist, after the departiure of Ozzy Osbourne's replacemennt Ronnie James Dio. Therefore, among the run through the Brum band's overwhelmingly legendary back catalogue there nestles a very Sabbath take on 'Smoke On The Water'. Of course, the biggest selling-point here is simply Sabbath doing Sabbath, very loudly, although not quite as loud as the crowd's reaction at various points of the show. Not least Tony Iommi's insane solo as 'War Pigs' refuels in preparation for its monumental climax, worth the price of admission alone.

Review: Welsh hard rock band Budgie never quite reached the highs of some of their peers by still did plenty for the evolution of their own particular musical niche. The were often said to be a blend of Rush's progressive styles and the more direct and dark heaviness of Black Sabbath. At the heart of the band was Burke Shelley's vocals - famous for their high-pitched banshee style - and despite being commercially unheralded, they have been mentioned as an influence by the likes of Iron Maiden, Van Halen and Queens of the Stone Age. Review: The eight full-length from Motorhead is often regarded as one of their most underappreciated works. Originally released in 1982, 'Iron Fist' would be the final album from the classic Three Amigos era line up of Lemmy, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor. Citing the pressures of following up their, 'No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith' live album that debuted at no. 1 on the UK album charts, as well as the internally controversial decision to allow guitarist Eddie Clarke to produce, the end result would be a project respected and adored by most, with the exception of the men behind the craft. With Clarke's departure not long into the promotional tour, and the underwhelming regard Lemmy held the work in, it's times like this that we can thank the fans for championing the record and its praise for years to come. This 40th anniversary edition is mere proof that even sometimes the artist themselves doesn't get the last say on the staying power of their art.

Review: The 1993 debut full-length from "Satanic industrial metal" envelope pushers, The Electric Hellfire Club, was a perfect storm of sex, drugs, and serial killer infatuation dressed up in gothic, metallic, near techno mayhem. Following mastermind Thomas Thorn's departure from My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, 'Burn, Baby, Burn!', would serve as the birth of edgy ideals, delivered with sonic abandon and tongue located firmly in cheek, while samples of low budget horror movies as well as invoking Satanic church founder Anton LaVey, served as the hysteric cherry on top of the dodgy sundae, designed to provoke and bemuse in equal measure. LaVey would later go on to ordain Thorn as a priest of the Satanic church, but that's a story for another time.

Review: The third full-length from one of the UK's "big four" thrash metal acts, Xentrix, was quite the controversial project upon its initial release in 1992. Leaning into a more progressive metal influence saw the band abandon some of their metallic potency in search of more texture and artistry. They've since gone on to refer to the work as the biggest mistake of their career, while it also led to the departure of vocalist/guitarist, Chris Astley, until his 2006 return after the band reformed. Like most albums steeped in artistic self-deprecation and early fan backlash, 'Kin', has gone on to find its audience, with expectation and anticipation now removed from the conversation, the group's attempt to strive for material beyond their integral make up is as refreshing as it is forward thinking for an early nineties thrash record.

Review: Giving some idea as to how much times have changed since Judas Priest played this monumental concert, the footage was originally released with the simple title Judas Priest Live, and was only available on laserdisc to begin with. A VHS arrived later, before the whole lot was redone as Live Vengeance 1982 on DVD and UMD, landing in 2006. Recorded on the first leg of a massive tour, in December 1982, it's been said before that this represents the heavy metal icons a their absolute peak, storming into the venue - and subsequent dates - off the back of Screaming For Vengeance, one of the group's landmark albums which arrived the same year. If you've even listened to one track from the group it should be pretty clear what that means: huge atmosphere, high energy, backs-to-the-wall stuff.

Review: "A record that sounds like dystopia", painting "a bleak portrait of an America that is on the brink of implosion" wrote one critic after first hearing AmeriKKKant, the 14th studio album by the mighty Ministry. If this is your first encounter with the record, it should take exactly two tracks to understand what said scribe - penning prose for The Spill Magazine - was getting at. There's anger, trouble, rage, frustration, disillusionment and a rallying war cry to stand up and stop the decline of Western civilisation at the hands of populists and fundamentalists running through every bar of every track. More so, this is also about standing tall and representing what constitutes an LP. Far more than a vessel for singles, AmeriKKKant is long form expression in the truest sense. Not necessarily a journey into industrial metal and sample-oriented experimental rock, but a manifesto for what they can represent.
