Review: Nia Archives has burst through and made a gigantic impact that now stands her at the forefront of the latest jungle era, and pretty much has done since she first made waves in 2020. Her collagist soundscapes have brought an all new sense of energy and rejuvenation to the genre that has in turn brought in plenty of new fans. While some may label her a revivalist, she emphasises that that aspect of the genre has never really gone away. The 24-year-old's debut album has been much anticipated by fans who have fallen in love with her weightless jungle tracks and intense basslines and they aren't let down here as those sounds resonate throughout.

This one kicks off with the brutalist beats and casuistic synths of 'The Other World' before funky, acid-laced techno bouncer 'Preserve The Rave' takes you to the next level. 'The Man Of The Street' (feat Mike Tansella Jr) is then a deeper, more cosmic cut with thinking synths but still plenty of powerful rhythms and last of all are the dark jungle breaks of 'Hasta La Vista, Baby.' Review: Oh gosh! Shogun's special Shuriken vinyl series hits its sixth edition with some of the label's biggest remix bombs of yore. Calyx & Teebee's twist on Spor's game-changing 'Aztec' takes the lead and remains one of the best remixes the Ram duo have ever done. Calibre's take on Alix Perez, Spectrasoul and Peven Everett's 'Forsaken' is up there with the original in terms of its beauty and simplicity. Review: DJ Fresh is a legend at this point. Whenever he drops new heat it is worth tuning in, especially when it's a 12" picture disc like this from Breakbeat Koas. The A-side is a collab with Buunshin. 'Dancing In the Dark' is a hardcore gem with pitched-up vocals and monstrous breaks over spin backs, raw bass and thrilling synth lacerations. Then comes an AMC Remix of DJ Fresh's 'Heavyweight' that is just that. Review: A classic from the mighty Hooj Choons back catalogue, Lustral's 'Everytime' gets a much welcome reissue here, featuring all the mixes from the original version of the release back in 1997. Review: The Craft Music label is back after a one year break with some fresh new cuts by resident Marco Lazovic. It's an EP inspired by the sound of the English club scene in the nineties and noughties, labels like Good Looking Records and artists such as Mike Millrain. Opener 'Losin Control' sure is a compelling mix of electro and breaks that soars on cosmic lines with euphoric vocals in the distance. That growing hoover sound and iconic vocal stab and those mercenary breaks... Like Total Science's Q himself, this still tears up dancefloors almost 30 years later. The Dutch producer isn't making any attempt to mask the source material on his summer-scouting new release, calling on hip-hop and r&b legends for vocal samples in the midst of straight-up, feel good rollers. Review: Here comes an exemplary slice of dub/drum & bass hybridization from Congo Natty, who has been helming up slick fusions of these genres since the early 1990s. His first album in eight years, 'Ancestorz' as a title should be indicative enough. The LP explores the indigenous roots and influences of jungle music, from its historic use of African rhythms to samples of Native American flutes. Review: Seba and Paradox return to offer up twin atmospheric, deep and breaks-driven drum & bass gemstones, 'I'll Wait' and 'Hexagon'. Quietly powerful and with enough drive and soul to shatter windows like terrestrial sonar, the A-sider 'I'll Wait' is a masterfully crafted track, proving that, while many drum & bass tracks might technically fit the bill, it takes a much greater deal of extra care and attention to really perfect the style's pacing. B-sider 'Amara', meanwhile, is much looser, albeit no less trigger-happy on the vocal oneshots, and it comes with a entrancingly time-losing rhythm to boot.

Review: Wots My Code has been back on our shelves recently with some of his most seminal EPs getting reissued. His self-titled effort from 1992 came back in October, as did his All Seasons EP also on Kiteforce, both of which sounded as good as they did back when first crafted. Now his The New Dubplates EP drops on Just Another Label with 'Dubplate' kicking off as a remix by Bay B Kane that takes no prisoners. Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. The tunes have both been remastered for the job and both sound as good now as ever. A-side gem 'Darkage' (DMS remix) is awash with trippy and psychedelic melodic patterns with a pitched-up and soulful vocal that brings the standout element to really make it bang. Review: 10 years in, Spandangle continues to bring a high grade of jungle to wax for the real heads. On this twenty-second volume in the series, we're treated to a team-up from Huddersfield producer Duburban and the mysterious Galvatron, two die-hards who know how to bring the absolute ruffage to the plates. 'Cremation' is a proper sound clash destroyer with a ragga toasting sample to die for before the drop. Don't be fooled by 'Lovely', which sneaks in on some mellow intro business before collapsing into a mess of amen mashing brilliance. 'Eleusis' takes things in a more reliably mellow direction without losing that gritty sonic finish, and 'Somebody Else' goes in on the soul licks to stunning effect. A record of two halves, no doubt.

Review: A welcome and precious addition to the new 'Legends' series by V Recordings, 'Lionheart' is a tune made with friend and equal talent Berty B, that has existed since 1994 and is famous for its opening "ready? get set... music!" sample and vinyl-spinback oneshots. It's a nigh-timeless track that straddles raggatek, jump-up and jungle techno in almost a single breath. Much later came the VIP (variation in production), which added far glossier and more heavenly variations and a harder-edged sheen. Now it gets a reissue. Also here comes the brand new VIP of 'Love 4 You', which is a masterclass in airy, spacious intro-work, which segues into pure drum-driving as per the formula.

Now to mark this year's RSD, their debut album Froge.mp3 enjoys a limited vinyl outing and it sounds amazing for it. Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

Review: Since signing to Shogun Audio a couple of years ago, Monrroe (real name Elijah Symons) has delivered a handful of lauded, digital only singles. Here he finally brings his brand of simmering, soulful and emotion-rich drum & bass to vinyl for the very first time. He begins with the hugely evocative and atmospheric 'Out of Time', where Zara Hawkshaw's heart-aching vocals ride a chunky, hot-stepping rhythm, warped bass and sensitive musical flourishes, before joining forces with singer Emily Makis on the bolder and heavier but no less dreamy 'Never Too Old'. Over on side B, Alexa Harley adds some loved-up vocals to the tough-but-immersive 'You Got Me', while 'Everywhere I Go' somehow manages to sound both summery and autumnal, while also offering booming bass and punchy D&B drums.

Review: Brighton imprint Furthur Electronix continues full steam ahead with its prolific output this year, and it's a big week for them. Alongside a great EP by Aussie Lou Karsh, we have this new one by Greek producer George Kontogiannidis aka Pera Sta Ori, who has racked up some impressive releases thus far on Musar, Brokntoys and Yellow Machines. As on previous works, the Sick Apian EP further explores Kontogiannidis' love of classic UK rave sounds. For instance A side cut 'Antio Zoi (TGRCCC)' utilises pitch shifted hardcore breaks underpinned by a dystopian electro atmosphere. Over on the flip, its '95 all over again on the breakneck junglist stepper 'Xypna' followed by the complex and hypnotic riddims of 'KodS0520 Fyllorroo'.
