Ravana EP (red vinyl double 12")
Cat: ONEFLTD 005. Rel: 01 Apr 20
Deep Dubstep
  1. Ravana (4:00)
  2. Lifeline (4:45)
  3. Post-Mortem (3:56)
  4. Ends (feat Headland) (4:40)
Review: 1985 don Perez gets back on the 140 ruffage and once again it's carnage. Swaggering, moody and unlike anything anyone else is doing, each cut bites with grilled menace. "Ravana" is all about the slow motion chainsaw harmonics, "Lifeline" is just raw subby hench stenchism, "Post-Mortem" stings with much more of a trippier, waspy edge before "Ends" finishes the business with a series of subverted rave and techno elements with Headland. Impeccable as always.

  4. Evocazione/Contatto/Risveglio
Review: Three years ago, Giuseppe Tillieci and Filippo Scorcucchi joined forces as LF58 for a debut EP of blissful ambient epics on Auxiliary that arguably didn't get the coverage its quality deserved. We have a sneaking feeling that the pair's debut album, which lands on the fantastic Astral Industries imprint, won't go unnoticed. For starters, it's brilliant, with the four lengthy tracks seeing them drift between Global Communication/Irresistible Force style melodic positivity (the hazy effects, huggable pads and echoing melodies of "Iniziazione"), ultra-deep, psychedelic dub techno ("Rituale", where simple melodic refrains wind in and out of sparse but hypnotic beats), swelling tropical ambient warmth with added deep space effects ("Metamorfosi") and the kind of languid, slow-motion fare that sits somewhere between Pete Namlook and Spacetime Continuum (side D suite "Evocazione/Contatto/Risveglio").

  4. Rebel Nina (1:24)
Review: Here's a special club 12" for serious heads dealing in a set of mixes of "Blackbird". You have to come correct when you dare step to Nina Simone, but you know full well the cast of characters assembled on this 12" can be trusted with the high priestess of soul. Timmy Regisford is up first, bringing some intense organ lines and Lately bass into the mix with a perfect balance between jubilant expression and tension. Joe Claussell then steps up with two different edit and overdub versions, where the organs get poured on more liberally and the whole jam boils over. As a wonderful bonus element, you get a powerful acapella monologue from Nina Simone to close out the B side.

  9. Shooting Star (feat Bobby Saint) (8:24)
  10. Universal Love (feat Andre Espeut) (5:51)
Review: Given their association with the label over the last few years, it seems fitting that the first artist album on Glitterbox should come from Qwestlife, a disco, boogie and jazz-funk loving duo made up on Andy "Yam Who?" Williams and pal Tom Laroye. "Prophecy" was made with a gaggle of guest musicians and vocalists (think Andre Espeut, Jacqui George, Lady Z and Bobby Saint) and features a slick, retro-futurist blend of original tracks and covers of well-loved but largely overlooked disco classics. The result is a brilliant played and produced set that joyously flits between revivalist disco-soul, synth-heavy boogie, slick nu-disco and jazz-funk. Perhaps the most extraordinary cut is "Fever", a superb chunk of disco-rap featuring none other than Sugarhill Gang and Furious Five members Melle Mel and Scorpio.

Review: To mark their 50th release, Brooklyn scalpel fiends Razor-N-Tape has put together a triple-pack of tried-and-tested reworks from some of the scene's heaviest hitter. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

Review: The Lumbago family adds some fresh new members to the team with the latest in the Ninja Tools series. This beefy edition packs a punch across 10 new cuts from new faces TC80, Robbenspierre, Seqta, Steve Marie, FRNK and Chaou.b, while mainstays Manipulate (aka Welwert), Bejenec, HDV & Mmmh also contribute. As ever the sounds are future fusions of breaks, electro and techno with big basslines and plenty of alien imagery. Robbenspierre's "Back To The Beat" is a particular standout with its all consuming sub bass and bumping drums, and Steve Marie's "NBT" is a throwback jam that will get hands in the air.

Review: This New Year, Jeff Mills is inviting us to look inward in the form of his Every Dog Has Its Day series. The last time we had an installment came 17 years ago, just enough time for a periodical cicada to emerge from theground, finished with its former life as a nymph. The sixth edition of this series is soon to follow in spring dressed in brown, continuing to deliver a spiritual and emotional raft for you to see that Every Dog Has Its Day. Mills himself has said, "You never figure out life, you just get used to it." Reflected in this record is that sentiment, that life doesn't present to you the answers because there are none. What is right and just for you, may not be for me, so how can I share with you any secrets. Electronic music can act as a guide, a catalyst of your headspace; it is not the map.

Review: On this officially licensed release, Wolf Music regular Medlar gets a chance to rework some of his favourite West End Records tracks. He's done a fine job, too, delivering reworks that suit contemporary dancefloors, while paying due reverence to the superb source material. He begins by rearranging and extending Shirley Lites' most famous moment, the boogie-era brilliance of "Heat You Up (Melt You Down)", before slicing together bits of the vocal and instrumental versions of Love Club's steamy electrofunk slammer "Hot Summer Nights". On the flip, he heads towards more traditional disco territory, first cutting up Kenix's sweet hearted "There's Never Been (No One Like You)", before reaching for the dub effects on a brilliant revision of Sweet Life's "I Get Lifted".

Review: The undisputed master of spiritual house music Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell presents Cosmicdelic Afrika: a collection of demos that the New York City based visionary is currently working on in the studio. The idea for the compilation was inspired by the concept of his event Share: the upcoming Share Afrika will see Claussell digging through his archives and bringing out compositions exploring Afrika, African Diaspora, dub and more. Beginning with the deeply magical and meditative vibe of "African Drug" (Joaquin's Drugged Out Sketch mix) by Bob Holroyd, the soulful and uplifting deepness of "Emarofo Tech" (Joaquin's Demo Sketch Mix) by Mampo or Cosmic Ritual's "Abraxas" (Joaquin demo Sketch mix) which is classic Claussell - reminiscent of work on his seminal Language album from the turn of the millennium.

Review: New York's JKRIV is shaping up to be something of a nu-disco revelation, particularly for his love for all things 'outernational'. In fact, then DJ-producer has released nothing but hip-swinging Latin funk over the last few years, and this RSD 2018 release for Brooklyn's Razor-N-Tape, Ferias 77' Reworks, is testament to that. In here, you'll find nothing but sick reinterpretations of classic Brazilian funk and disco, re-moulded to fit the modern ear and, of course, the modern sound-systems. Subtle swings of boogie-filtered disco, deep and sensual house, and a whole load of trippy-hop make this a blazing summer belter, and there's even a slow, Balearic rework of Edu Lobo's infamous "Ponteio".

Review: If you're wondering what you'll find within the grooves of this vinyl double-pack from Joaquin "Joe" Claussell's Sacred Rhythm label, a cursory glance at the title should fill you in. As it states, what's on offer here is extended versions of some of the most popular unofficial "edits and overdubs" reworks. Of particular interest is his utterly insane 10-minute rub of Czeslaw Niemen's "Zi Listu Do M", a quirky chunk of experimental jazz that Claussell has magically re-imagined as a wonky, soft touch house track. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere, too, including a Balearic disco style take on Fleetwood Mac, a thumping revision of GB Experience's "Disco Extravaganza" and a wonderfully sweaty and percussive revision of The Impossible Dreamers' exotic "Life On Earth".

Review: Berlin outlet Libertine Records welcomes the mysterious but increasingly relevant GOSUB for a fantastic double 12" that offers up the artist's most complete electro release yet. This comes just ahead of further outings on Blkmarket and after split EPs on this label in cahoots with Brighton-based Furthur Electronix. Opener "Without You" is an old school gem with deadpan vocal delivery and cold, stark chord sequences. Things get more unhinged on the freewheeling "The Key Holder" and acid laced "The Above" before an all out intergalactic assault on the kinetic drum programming of "Enter You." Cosmic influences take hold later on and mark this out as an accomplished package indeed.

Review: The At Home Sound label welcomes the mightily talented Shuya Okino back for another special 7" release after the excellent "Summer Love" release earlier this year. Okino is best known as one half of Kyoto Jazz Massive with his brother Yoshihiro, but this release focuses on his solo productions, and more specifically tasteful covers of all time classic disco and funk gems. First up is a take on Narada Michael Walden's buttery groover "Give Your Love A Chance", but our pick is the flip side version of Don Blackman's "Holding You, Loving You", which brings a tasteful modern RnB edge to the vintage 80s jam.

Review: Back in 2015 the Die Wild Jagd project debuted with "Morgenrot", a digital-only single rooted in synthwave. Four years on the track returns, only this time the Berlin-based outfit's original version is not present. Instead, Minimood has treated us to a triple-pack containing no less than ten different versions. The first plate begins with a spaced-out, semi-acoustic take from Fangschuss, before in turn touching on pulsing early morning ambient (the Vactrol Park mix), dense post-punk heaviness (the Ancient Methods remix) and moody new wave (the KVBremix). The more club-focused techno revisions can be found on the second 12" - Roman Flugel and Steve Bug's pitched-down revisions being our picks - while the final slab of wax boasts two lengthy dub techno and abstract ambient interpretations by Detroiters CV313 and Variant.

Review: Neil Landstrumm began his solo production in 1993, influenced by the Sheffield school of bleep as well as electro and Miami bass. His unique sound soon caught the ears of a wide variety of the world's finest electronic labels - going on to record for Tresor and Planet Mu among others and he remains one of the scene's innovators. Featured here are timeless classics such as "Takks" or "Sniff & Destroy" which nailed that similar kind of minimal funk that label mate Daniel Bell was creating at the time, through to the bang and clatter of frantic jams like "Swing/Jerk" and "Blam The Target" (Inhabit The Machines) which are still a true zeitgeist of early '90s UK techno.

Review: Having made his name during the late '90s and early 2000s as a maker of particularly forthright techno, Oliver Ho has broadened his horizons in recent years. Nowhere is that more obvious on his Broken English Club project, which debuted last year with a pair of industrial and EBM minded releases for Jealous God and Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. Here he returns to the latter, laying down more fuzzy, straight-to-tape journeys into analogue, mid '80s dancefloor experimentalism. There's naturally much to enjoy, from the peak Cabaret Voltaire grittiness of "Drycutting", and the bleak EBM throb of "Ritual Killing", to the ghostly synthesizers, Jaydee bass and droning textures of "Channel 83".

Review: Second time around for Icelandic neo-classical composer Olafur Arnalds' 2018 album "Re:Member". This version, pressed for Record Store Day 2019, boasts a fine bonus 7" containing strings-only re-recordings of three original album tracks ("Saman", "Momentary" and "Nyepi"). These are superb and genuinely compliment the original 12-track set, which was produced using specially created software capable of triggering new musical sequences on "two pianos chained to his primary instrument". This cutting-edge approach, combined with live percussion and the multi-instrumentalist's own considered electronics, resulted in an album that remains thoughtful, mesmerizing and entertaining in equal measure.

Funk
  1. Ain't It Funky Now (4:32)
  2. Greasy Spoon (4:10)
Review: Late, great Japanese funk don Takehiro Honda's vaults get the treatment from HMV as two of his many famously fizzy jams enjoy a new lease of life. 1971's "Ain't It Funky Now" should be familiar by all as it subverts the good work of the greatest band leader of all time with mild jazz and funk fusion. "Greasy Spoon" on the B can be found a few years deeper into Takehiro's discography as part of his 1973 album "What's Going On". Another supreme, lucid fusion cut; not only does it still kick up a fuss on the dancefloor, it also salutes the best cooked breakfasts on the planet. Not to be slept on.

Review: After a 2018 dalliance with ESP Institute, Andrea Mancini AKA Cleveland returns to John Talabot's Hivern Discs imprint with his most expansive and ambitious release to date. Stretched across two discs, the tracks that make up "nDSi" are notably more starry and spaced-out in approach than some of the Brussels-based producer's previous releases. There's much to admire from start to finish, from the sci-fi electro shuffle of "Polar" and deep space techno bliss of "Noord", to the sparse analogue notes and off-kilter IDM rhythms of "6IX". Other highlights include the breezy, Space Dimension Controller style ambient techno of "Govlin" and the broken computer vibes of bleeping closing cut "NDSi".

Review: Labels Hot Mule and Secousse have teamed up to deliver something special: a killer EP of "lost gems from the golden era of Zouk and Gwo-Ka" in Guadeloupe (that's 1985 to '92, fact fans). The four tracks showcased here were performed and produced by an artist whose fame in Guadeloupe sadly never spread any further, Max Rambhojan. The A-side boasts two versions of the rather brilliant and suitably cheery "Tou't Jou Pa Min'm": the jaunty, sun-kissed, whistle-sporting 1986 original mix, and Rambhojan's heavily electronic, synthesizer-heavy, calypso-tinged 1992 re-make of his biggest local hit. Over on side B you'll find the bubby dub bass, sparse synths and flute solos of the decidedly tropical "Cecilia" and a suitably breezy, sunset-ready gem entitled "On Jou Matin".
