Liquid filter Eurorack synth module
Notes: Ripples delivers a classic, big-sounding analog four-pole filter in a small 8-HP package, continuing Mutable Instruments' lineage of warm and tasty filters started by the Shruthi SMR4 mkII and 4-Pole Mission.

3 filter modes are available: 2-pole band-pass, 2-pole low-pass, and 4-pole low-pass.

Self-oscillation is available for all modes and produces a clean sine-wave on the LP4 output. Unlike many classic 4-pole designs, this filter does not suffer from "loudness drop" when resonance is increased. The resonance loudness compensation circuit brings a slight tone coloration reminiscent of the Roland SH/Jupiter filters, with a very round and "liquid" resonance.

The 4-pole low-pass output is additionally sent to a VCA. This makes Ripples a good "final stage" module for an inexpensive/space-constrained subtractive synthesis synth voice.

Each ADSR provides these controls and in/outputs:

Compact voltage-controlled four-channel audio mixer - 8HP
Notes: A-135-2 is a miniature version of the A-135-1. Behind a front panel with 8 HP only four linear VCAs (voltage controlled amplifiers) and a voltage controlled mixer based on the VCAs are available.

Controls, In/Outputs and Functions of each VCA:

- Level (manual control of the VCA amplification), small rubberized knob (L1...L4)
- Control voltage input with associated attenuator (CV1...CV4), for the full VCA control range about 0...+5V control voltage are required (attenuator fully clockwise), for higher control voltages the attenuator is used, the attenuators are without knobs, just plastic shafts with white marker
- Signal Input
- Signal Output
- All inputs and outputs are DC coupled. Consequently the VCAs can be used to process both audio and control voltages (e.g. to control the level of LFOs or envelopes)
- The signal input is not equipped with an attenuator. But the VCAs can process all signals up to 15Vpp / -7.5...+7.5V without clipping. In case of higher levels an external attenuator is required (e.g. A-183-1).
- The available amplification range is 0...1, the maximal amplification is 1 (i.e. it "clips" and remains at 1 even if the control voltage goes beyond the value that corresponds to amplification 1)

Functions of the voltage controlled mixers:

- Two outputs ("Selected" and "All")
- Selected output: the ouput if a VCA is removed from this sum signal when a plug is inserted into the corresponding VCA output.
- All output: sum of all VCA outputs, regardless of inserted plugs into the VCA outputs
- The maximal amplification is about 0.6 to avoid clipping at the mixer outputs (otherwise the outputs may distort with 15Vpp signals at each signal input and full amplifications)

Special functions of the voltage controlled mixers (selectable by internal jumpers):

- Dual Stereo VCA: In this case the control unit of VCA1 (L1 + CV1) affects also VCA3 and the control unit of VCA2 (L2 + CV2) affects also VCA4, the control units of VCA2 and VCA4 are out of operation
- Quad VCA: In this case the control unit of VCA1 (L1 + CV1) affects all four VCAs. The control units of VCA2, VCA3 and VCA4 are out of operation. In this mode the module has the same function as module A-132-2. That's why module A-132-2 will be discontinued.
- Normalling of the signal inputs: by means of internal jumpers signal input 1 can be normalled to signal input 2, signal input 2 to signal input 3 and signal input 3 to signal input In 4. That way the same input signal can be distributed to four different channels by means of control voltages (e.g. quadrophonic distribution of audio signals). Suitable control voltage sources are e.g. A-144 (Morphing Controller) or A-143-9 (Quadrature LFO).

Simplistic quad LFO module with intuitive front panel - 14HP
Notes: Module A-143-3 is a low-cost four-fold modulation oscillator, often called LFO (low frequency oscillator). Like the other modules of the A-143 series (A-143-1 and A-143-2) not a very "exciting" module, just a bread-and-butter device and a simple demon for work. The module contains four simple LFOs. Each LFO is equipped with three waveform outputs: triangle, rectangle and rising sawtooth. The frequency of the sawtooth output is twice the frequency of the other outputs. A three-way switch is used to select one of three frequency ranges mid-low-high, spanning from about two cycles per minute at the lowest, to moderate audio frequency at the highest (about 5 kHz).

If other waveforms or additional LFO features are required (e.g. reset input, adjustable waveform, voltage controlled frequency) the LFO modules A-145, A-146 and A-147 are available.

Basic voltage-controlled oscillator for the A-100 modular system
Notes: Module A-110-2 is a low-cost voltage-controlled oscillator. It's a slightly reduced version of the standard VCO A-110-1. Compared to the A-110-1, the A-110-2 has no sine output and the (expensive) octave rotary switch is replaced by a 3-position toggle switch. In return, the A-110-2 is equipped with an additional linear FM input and a soft sync input. A jumper is used to select the range of the tune control between about 1/2 octave and about 4 octaves. The width of the module is only 8 HP compared to the 10 HP of the A-110-1.

All other features are essentially the same as for the A-110-1.

Explanation of the jumpers and trimming potentiometers:

- JP2: CV connection to A-100 bus
- JP3: range of Tune control (installed = about 4 octaves, not installed = about 1/2 octave)
- JP4: AC/DC coupling of the linear FM input (installed = DC coupling, not installed = AC coupling)
- P5: 1V/Oct scale
- P6: frequency offset
- P7: high-end trim
- P8: adjustment +1 Oct. range switch
- P9: adjustment -1 Oct. range switch
- P10: temperature VCO heater

The core of the A-110-2 is - like the A-110-1 - a sawtooth oscillator (in contrast to the A-111-1, which is based on a triangle oscillator). The other waveforms are derived from the sawtooth by waveform converters. As the sawtooth reset (i.e. the back-to-zero slope) is not infinitely fast but takes a little bit of time the triangle is not perfect! At the bottom of the waveform it has a small glitch or notch that is caused by the sawtooth reset and cannot be eliminated by the waveform converter. If a perfect triangle is required, the A-111-1 is recommended.

The sawtooth output of the A-110-21 has a falling (or negative) slope. The front panel shows erroneously a rising (or positive) slope. This has no influence on the sound but becomes important when the module is used as an LFO or is mixed with the sawtooth output of another VCO.

The control voltage applied to the socket 1V/Oct is added to the control voltage coming from the bus (interruptible by removing the jumper JP2). Connecting a cable to the socket 1V/Oct does not interrupt the bus CV connection!

Precision calibrated analogue VCA - 4HP
Notes: The Tiptop Audio VCA is a full featured, precision calibrated, analogue Voltage Controlled Amplifier. At its heart is a novel design of a control circuitry - a function that lets you sweep continuously through three different response curves: Logarithmic, Linear, Exponential - giving you all three shapes in a single module. These are the most critical conditions for a good sounding, good responding VCA and are what the Tiptop Audio design carefully addresses. 2 LED peak indicator lights on the front panel light up with incoming CV or audio signals. While a clipping indicator for audio is expected, clipping of CV is often overlooked and it's included here to visually maintain the full dynamic range of an envelope driving the VCA.

The Tiptop Audio VCA lets you concentrate on creative uses rather than figuring out the module's anomalies. The result is an excellent sounding synthesizer VCA that's a joy to use and pleasing to hear.

Pair of multicore signal connectors
Notes: A-180-9 is another simple but useful tool. It can be used to connect up to 14 signals between different cases by means of standard network cables (RJ45). These cables are available all over world smoothly in different lengths and colours. From the factory two black network cables with 0.5 m length are enclosed.

The upper network connector is wired to the eight sockets 1-8, the lower to the six sockets A-F. That way it's possible to pre-patch different cases and connect signals, that are required in all cases (e.g. clock, start/stop, master CV) by means of one or two cables only instead of 14 individual patch cables. When only eight signals are required only the upper network connector is required and the sockets 1-8 are used. When more than eight signals have to be patched both network connectors have to be used. It's also possible to wire the upper and lower network to different cases (i.e. signals 1-8 to external case #1 and signals A-F to external case#2).

The module is fully passive (no power supply required) and simply wires the 14 sockets to 14 pins of the network connectors.

The A-180-9 comes in pairs for combining two modular systems.

Notes: A-104 is a fourfold formant filter as used in the Mixtur Trautonium by Oskar Sala. It is made of four parallel resonance filters, each filter can be switched to low pass or band pass or off. Frequency, resonance and level are controlled for each filter separately (no voltage control). The frequency range for the filters is about 50Hz...5kHz. The filter audio inputs are very sensitive so that distortion may intentionally be used to create new sounds - if desired.

The A-104 is a versatile module for sound modification. In the first place it is used for reproduction of resonances (e.g. the vocal-like effects known from the Trautonium). In combination with the subharmonic generator A-113, the Trautonium Manual A-198 and some other A-100 modules, one obtains a Trautonium replica.

Reverb effects module with spring reverb tank - 8HP
Notes: Module A-199 is a spring reverb module. The reverb effect is electronically simulated by means of 3 spiral springs. Spring reverb systems have a very characteristic sound that is based on the (insufficient) mechanical properties of the springs like signal delays, audio resonances, limited frequency range, acoustic feedback behaviour, sensitivity to mechanical shocks and others.

The 3-spring system used in the A-199 ensures a "dense" reverb because of the different properties of the three springs.

The A-199 implies some special features that are not self-evident for spring reverb units:

The reverb signal can be fed back to the input using the Feedback control. Even self-oscillation of the springs similar to the self-oscillation of filters is available. The feedback loop can lead even via external modules like VCA, VCF, phaser, frequency shifter, vocoder, distortion/waveshaper, ring modulator and others. In this case the reverb output of the A-199 is connected to the input of the external module(s) and the output of the external module(s) is fed back to the Ext. Feedback In socket of the A-199. This socket contains a switch that interrupts the internal feedback loop as soon as a plug is inserted.

Another feature is the Emphasis control. This enables the adjustment of the accentuation of middle frequencies (around ~ 2kHz).

With the Mix control the relation between original and reverb signal appearing at the mix output is adjusted.

Using all these features very extreme and unusual effects can be generated with the A-199.

Notes: The A-141-2 module is an ADSR envelope generator with voltage controlled attack, decay, sustain and release parameters. Other features include LFO functionality as well as digital end-of-attack and end-of-release outputs. Besides positive and inverted outputs there is an output with voltage controlled amplitude available.

Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release parameters of the A-141-2 can be adjusted manually as well as via control voltages. The CV inputs come equipped with attenuators. In addition, a Comm-CV socket was implemented. Control voltages fed to this input influence all time parameters (A, D and R) simultaneously. Thus, it is possible to make high pitched notes shorter and more percussive. - Just like the behaviour of many acoustic instruments. The time range of the envelope goes from 50 microseconds to six seconds. Using a toggle switch, it is possible to increase these values by a factor of ten (500 us to 60 s) or a factor of hundred (5 ms to 10 min). To activate the envelope, there are gate and retrigger inputs.

The A-141-2 is equipped with a normal and an inverted output. Both connectors work with a fixed level. Furthermore, there is a third, variable output. Here, before reaching the out socket, the envelope signal is fed to a voltage controlled VCA. - Perfect for velocity CV signals. A jumper on the circuit board allows you to choose between a unipolar and a bipolar mode of operation. Other jumpers make it possible to normalize the CV inputs.

Last but not least, there are two digital outputs called EOA and EOR, which emit a gate signal after the attack respectively release phase. This is useful for delayed triggering of other envelopes. By connecting EOA or EOR output to the gate input, you can make the A-141-2 oscillate like a LFO. Adjustments to the envelope times change the frequency and waveform. If you connect the Attack CV input to the inverted output or the Decay respectively Release CV input to the normal output, you can alter the curve characteristics.

Dual quantizer for CV's, converting a continuous positive input voltage into a stepped output voltage - 8HP
Notes: Module A-156 is a Dual Control Voltage Quantizer. A quantizer converts a continuous control voltage in the range 0...+10V into a stepped output voltage in the same voltage range (i.e. only certain voltages occur). Normally 1/12 V steps are used to obtain semitone steps. Quantizer 2 of the A-156 allows has more sophisticated quantizing modes like major scale (i.e. only voltages corresponding to the major scale), minor scale, major chord, minor chord, fundamental + fifth and addition of seventh or sixth when chords are selected. Only those voltages appear at the CV output which comply with the selection rule (e.g. minor chord with seventh). The mode setting of quantizer 2 is done with 3 switches (1-0-1 type with middle position). From the factory quantizer 1 is working in the semitone mode. But there is a jumper on the pc board that can be changed so that even quantizer 1 uses the same scale as quantizer 2.

For each quantizer the following in/outputs are available:

- Control voltage input (CV In): The input for the continuous voltage to be quantized
- Control voltage output (CV Out): The output of the quantized voltage
- Trigger input (Trig.In): If this jack is left open the quantizer is working permanently. If a rectangle voltage is applied quantisation happens only at the rising edge of the signal (e.g. from an LFO or MIDI-to-Sync interface). Thus the quantizing can be synchronized with other events
- Trigger output (Trig.Out): Whenever a quantisation happens (i.e. a new voltage is generated at the CV Out) a positive pulse occurs at this output. It may be used to trigger an envelope generator (ADSR) or for triggering other modules (sequential switch A-151, trigger divider/sequencer A-160/161, trigger delay A-162, ...). If none of these functions are used the jack is left open

On top of that the A-156 is provided with a common transpose CV input having an additive effect on both quantizers. This input is quantized in semitone steps. A typical application is the transposition of a sequence generated by the A-155 by a second control voltage (e.g. coming from the MIDI-CV interface A-190).

Typical applications:

- Quantizing the CV sequence generated by an A-155 (semitone, only major scale, only minor scale and so on)
- Quantizing the voltage coming from the Trautonium Manual / Ribbon Controller A-198, Theremin A-178 or Light-to-CV module A-179 to get accurate semitones or major/minor scale tones
- Arpeggio-like effects with LFO, random, noise, envelope generators as CV sources (for negative or symmetrical voltages an offset must be added, e.g. with the offset/attenuator module A-129-3, to obtain positive voltages for the A-156 input)

4HP Eurorack module featuring a combination of 3 functions
Notes: Module A-184-1 is the combination of three functions:

- Ring Modulator
- Sample&Hold/Track&Hold unit
- Slew Limiter

The same functions are actually already available in other modules (e.g. A-114, A-148, A-170). But in many systems it's not necessary to have two ring modulators (A-114) or two S&H units (A-148) or two slew limiters (A-170) available. That's why we have compiled these function in one small 4 HP module.

The upper section is nothing but half of an A-114, i.e. a ring modulator with the usual X/Y inputs and the X*Y output. Inputs and outputs of this sub-unit are AC coupled, i.e. suitable only for audio signals. A detailed explanation of a ring modulator can be found on the A-114 info page.

The lower section is a Sample & Hold (S&H) / Track & Hold (T&H) unit (same as half of an A-148) followed by a slew limiter (same as the upper section the A-170). A toggle switch is used to set the mode to S&H or T&H. In S&H mode the unit picks out a sample from the voltage at the SH input at the rising edge of the trigger signal input. In T&H mode the output follows the input voltage as long as the level of the trigger signal is high. As soon as the trigger signal turns low, the last voltage is stored. The trigger input is internally normalled to high, i.e. the unit works just as a slew limiter in T&H mode when no trigger signal is applied.

Module A-110-1 is a voltage-controlled oscillator. This VCO's frequency range is about eight octaves (ca. 15Hz ... 8kHz). It can produce four waveforms simultaneously: rectangle, sawtooth, triangle, and sine wave (triangle and sine shapes are not perfect, see remark below). The output levels are typically 8Vpp for saw and rectangle, and 10Vpp for triangle and sine. The frequency or pitch of the VCO is determined by the position of the octave (Range) switch and tuning (Tune) knob, and by the voltage present at the CV inputs. Frequency modulation (FM) of the VCO is therefore a possibility. Footage (the octave of the fundamental) is set by the Range control in five steps, and Fine tuning controlled by the Tune knob by about +/-1 one semitone (can be modified for a wider range).

You can control the pulse width of the square wave either by hand, or by voltage control - Pulse Width Modulation or PWM.

For more detailed information please look at the user's manual A110_man.pdf. In addition, the A-110 service manual is available as an example for the A-100 service manual that is available at extra charges. This document describes also how to modify the sensitivity of the tune control, how to re-adjust the 1V/octave scale and the frequency offset (i.e. the absolute pitch). Such modifications should be carried out by experienced users only!

The core of the A-110-1 is a sawtooth oscillator (in contrast to the A-111-1, which is based on a triangle oscillator). The other waveforms are derived from the sawtooth by internal waveform converters. As the sawtooth reset (i.e. the back-to-zero slope) is not infinite fast but takes a little bit of time the derived waveforms triangle and sine are not perfect! At the top of the waveform they have a small glitch or notch that is caused by the sawtooth reset and cannot be eliminated by the waveform converters. The sine is derived from the triangle by a simple diode-based converter and the sine shape is not perfect (only a rounded triangle).

If a perfect triangle is required, the A-111-1 is recommended. For a perfect sine wave the quadrature LFO/VCO A-143-9 is recommended.

Regardless of the size of your modular system, the number of modules it contains and its intended use, there is basically only one thing at stake: level adjustments. Often the full level of a signal is too high and needs to be attenuated. Also the reverse case, that it is too low, occurs more often than you think - an amplifier is needed.

Amplinuator 3 cleverly combines both functions. The LEVEL controls attenuate input signals to zero (left stop) or boost them by a factor of two (right stop). In the centre position, the levels remain unchanged. In order to ensure sensitive settings in the centre position range, we deliberately omitted the use of a potentiometer with centre detent. Instead, the knob has a dead zone. This guarantees a reliable finding of the zero position. Each of the three channels has outputs with positive and inverted polarity.

The sum section combines all signals. Amplinuator 3 also works as a 3-in-1 mixer. It likes audio signals and control voltages equally.

We Love Vactrols Too...

Shared Response:

Dynamic Impulse Filter Controls:

Two precision analogue CV processors with input selection, voltage hold and gated polariser functionalities
Notes: A 'Swiss Army knife' for your modular system, Select 2 provides two highly accurate gate-controlled voltage processors in 6 HP. These allow you to create, switch, mute, hold, invert, attenuate, offset, add/mix and subtract voltages, from slow control voltages (CV) up to audio frequencies.

Each processor features two signal inputs, with the left input used by default. A gate on the 'select' input switches to the right signal input instead. The signal inputs are normalised to the precision +5 V reference (left) and 0 V (right).

Following the input section is a hold circuit. A rising edge on the 'hold' input freezes the input voltage at that moment, until the gate input goes low again. While most sample/track-and-hold modules only manage a few seconds, Select 2’s 'low droop' design enables it to store a held voltage accurately for several minutes.

The end of the signal path consists of a gated polariser/attenuverter. Using the knob, the voltage at the output can attenuated and/or inverted: the gain is -1 (inverted) at the minimum setting, 0 at the centre and +1 (unity gain) at the maximum. The polariser can be disabled using the 'unity' gate input. This unique ability enables a variety of interesting gate-controlled signal modulations. Dual-colour LEDs show the output voltage of each processor.

Finally, if the A output socket is left unused, the signal is mixed together with the B output. This enables signal offsetting, CV mixing, pitch transposing etc.

Its small size, minimalist design, and modern production methods have allowed us to bring the world's most famous bass drum sound generator back at a very low cost. The real thing is here again.

The BD808 is the Roland TR-808's Bass Drum circuit adapted for use in Eurorack format and tuned to sound like a machine that comes fresh off the original 80's assembly line. The adaptation to modular format has allowed us to add some special features like independent Accent levels, a high-powered gain stage, dual-input pulse-shaper, and extended decay - all without compromising the signature sound of the TR-808.

A widely used technique with TR-808 machines is to run the drum sounds through outboard amplifiers to add gain and then pass the sound through just about anything to generate additional harmonics caused by clipping and distortion. In the BD808, we have already included this high-powered output gain stage capable of producing signals up to 20Vpp, extending from the original palette of sounds and allowing you to get an assorted array of harmonized bass drums ranging from sharp attacks to crushed tones using this simple yet effective technique! Notes: Introducing the SD808, part of our new series of drum modules that brings analog percussion to the modular synth world, instantly turning your system into a self-contained music machine.

The SD808 is the TR-808's analog snare drum circuit adapted for use in Eurorack modular synthesizer format and was designed to sound like a fresh-out-of-the-box, 1980s TR-808 snare. Adapting the circuit to the modular format has allowed us to add special features like independent accent levels, a high-powered gain stage, a dual-input pulse-shaper, and an adjustable noise source - all without compromising the signature sound of the TR-808 snare drum.

The SD808 sounds tight and extremely snappy because it's analog - the real thing, not samples. The sound is made with three analog sound generators mixed together: two oscillating sine waves and a noise source. The SD808's front panel controls have a lot of sweet spots with sounds that are not just limited to snare drum sounds; it can also create other electronic percussive elements.

The noise source generator in the original TR-808 machines were revised in later production batches, resulting in variations in sound across the production run. The SD808 uses this later, revised circuit to create a snare drum hit that is slightly darker, has more body, and is more realistic. Just like other drums in this series, the SD808 includes a high-powered output gain stage capable of producing signals up to 20Vpp, allowing you to get an array of harmonized snare drums sounds with even tighter attacks.
